There is a wholesome feeling to this time of year. I have always been inspired by the idea of harvest. A farmer in the field yielding his crops paints a beautiful picture of gratitude for all God has done. November is a time of giving thanks. It is the season to take a deep breath and reflect. There is power in gratitude. Gratitude pushes us to joy. Gratitude gives us eyes to see and recognize life's blessings. Gratitude drives away discontentment and helps us to appreciate the little things. As we pause and practice gratitude, only now, as the year's dusk is dawning, can we begin to see a bit of budding fruit from the harvest we didn't know we were planting. This Thanksgiving, while I squish my family around my tiny newlywed kitchen table and burn my nana's cornbread recipe for the 100th time, I hope to cherish the moment. I hope you also cherish the moment, gather around the table, share the ups and downs, pass the pecan pie and count your blessings young and old. My hope is that every hand that holds and every eye that beholds this magazine is blessed this season. XO,

It is our mantra, our shoreline and the lighthouse that brings us home when times of trouble and conf lict arise in our countr y. Our Veterans raised their right hands and took the noble oath to ser ve as so many have before them. To defend our countr y and our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. In all instances, a Veteran sacrif iced portions of their own freedoms and rights to ensure the sur vival of ours. We thank and honor all Cherokee Veterans, past and present.

CARRIE ROEGER In 2015, Semper Fi Bar and Grille opened. It quickly became a local Veteran spot filled with priceless historical military memorabilia and a "rally point" for Veteran's causes. Semper Fi Bar and Grille sponsors charity events and hosts Veteran vendor events on-site. It's hard not to know about Semper Fi in the Veteran community with Carrie and Ralph "Top" Roeger serving in the USMC. Whether it's supporting Veterans or the massive truck that leads the 4th of July Parade every year, this dynamic duo has made a difference and impacted Cherokee County Veteran relations. Mrs. Carrie Roeger served in the USMC from 1988 to 1993. She achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and, with her high ASVAB test scores, secured her spot as a Russian linguist. After serving in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, San Antonio, Texas and Norway, the SSgt decided to up the stakes and attend Ft. Moore, Georgia (Formerly Ft. Benning). She became part of the history on those walls at Semper Fi Bar and Grille, becoming the first woman in the USMC to receive jump wings. This trailblazer's future plans involve franchising their business for Veterans in other areas. These plans will include a “pathway to ownership” for Veterans to receive financing, training and personal growth. KURT LEE WHEELER So many of us in Cherokee County know or have heard the name Kurt Wheeler. A talented singer, songwriter and performer here in Cherokee County. Even the Cherokee County song was written by Mr. Wheeler. At Over 130 plus shows solo and with the Lathemtown Poets Society, Mr. Wheeler pours his heart and soul into performing and serving the community through song. This includes multiple charity events supporting Veteran related causes. If you have ever heard him perform or tell stories as part of his show, you already know Cherokee is blessed to have Kurt as one of its sons. Mr. Wheeler is also a 6th-grade teacher at Creekland Middle School in Macedonia, Georgia. A "Singing Teacher" with multiple degrees, including a bachelor's degree in middle education, a bachelor's degree in professional aeronautics from Embry-Riddle and a doctorate of education from Nova University. Married to Janet Wheeler, a teacher and watercolor artist, and father to Maddie Wheeler Benton, a teacher and head cheer coach at Cherokee High School. Also, Mr. Wheeler has a son, Elias Wheeler, a multi-instrumentalist songwriter currently in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Wheeler's roots may be here, continuing his service to the Cherokee community, but he had a higher calling early in life. This led him to serve in the USAF from 1984 to 89. Trained as an Avionics Senior Systems Specialist, he served with distinction. He was honored with Airman of the Quarter at both Seymour Johnson Air Base and again during his time at Osan Air Base, Korea. Kurt Lee Wheeler

Timothy Young

TIMOTHY YOUNG People often describe those who are generous and giving to others as someone who would "Give you the shirt off their back," for those who know Tim Young, that fits him perfectly. CPL Tim Young served in the USMC from 1994-1999 as an Avionics Technician on CH-46 Helicopter. After his military service, he entered the Cyber Security Field and works as a pre-sales engineer. His true passion and calling are his 7-year-old daughter, Eliana Young and his selfless desire to help his fellow Veterans. Mr. Young is the Senior Co-Founder of the MilVet Community. A 501C nonprofit that works as a beacon of hope and opportunity for Veteran community cohesion. MilVet hosts a meetup on the first Monday of every month at Reformation Brewery for Veterans. MilVet has worked with the Cherokee Crisis Hotline and works with Veterans on several related issues, including mental health and suicide prevention. MilVet sponsors charity concerts, road marches, community bbq, chili cookoffs and children's school supply drives. All to strengthen the community for Veterans and promote volunteerism. MilVet works closely with Veteran groups like Shepherds Men, Honor & Remember and Project Hero. The long-term mission of the MilVet Community is to replicate in other counties then in other states, to allow local Veterans to help other local Veterans through various issues. Glenn “Flash” Wells

GLENN “FLASH” WELLS Glenn Wells completed his USMC boot camp in 1995, where he then reported to 1st Battalion 6th Marines at Camp Lejeune. Later, he joined the Marines Elite Force Recon (FORECON) as a Scout Recon Sniper. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan during his 21 years of service. Mr. Wells was wounded multiple times but continued serving till his retirement in 2016. His service to the community and Veteran causes had just begun as he transitioned to civilian life. Using the benefits from service and overcoming the challenges of a traumatic brain injury, Glenn received 4 degrees between 2013-2020. One was a law degree, first serving the people of Cherokee County as the Assistant

District Attorney and then serving in the Cherokee County Veterans Treatment Court (CCVTC). He felt the call to fight for his Veteran counterparts directly by becoming an Attorney-Advisor to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Today, Glenn works at Morton & Morton performing Veterans Benefit Appeals, ensuring Veterans get all the resources and benefits they earned from their service. He is fighting for Veterans and advocating for groups such as the Shepherds Men, Honor & Remember and MilVet Community in his spare time. Glenn resides in Woodstock with his wife, Amy Wells and they have two daughters, Mairin and Allyson.

Hosting Tips Our Hospitality Guide To Prepare Your Home For The Holidays Sarah Heffernan and Ellie Compton, from the Merchandising team at Southern Sky Home, share advice on how to prepare your home for the holidays for you and your guests to enjoy-without all the stress! Plan ahead. Planning ahead and making to-do lists will help set you up for success. Start by organizing a list of all tasks to be completed around the house, such as cleaning and decorating. Then, conceptualize your party theme and food & drink menu. Consider the approximate head count and always prepare for more guests than expected. Prepare your living space for lounging. Create a warm, inviting environment for you and your guests to enjoy. Prepare

your space for your upcoming gathering by providing ample seating for lounging and socializing. We suggest displaying your sofas and chairs in a way that invites conversation and maximizes seating so all guests have a comfortable place to sit. Bring in accent furniture such as accent tables, C-tables and martini tables, which are great for guests to put their appetizer plate or beverage. Maximize dining seating Consider your dining table and chair requirements to accommodate your guests comfortably. If you have a group of 8 people, we recommend having a dining table that's 72-84 inches in length or a 60-inch round table. If your guest count exceeds that amount, we suggest having a 96-108 inch rectangular table

that seats up to 10 people. Lastly, if you are hosting a more extensive gathering of 10-12 guests, a 120-inch-long table will best accommodate a group that size. Personalize your decor. Incorporate holiday-inspired decor, such as seasonal greenery or accessories, into your home that reflects your unique style. Decorate with accents such as statement pillows, tabletop decor and candles to create a festive, welcoming ambiance. A few key places in your home to create holiday vignettes are your entryway console, mantle and dining table.

The Treehouse At Pine Meadows THE PERFECT LITTLE GET AWAY MINUTES AWAY FROM DOWNTOWN WOODSTOCK Our story began in the fall of 2019. It was a time when I quit my full-time job to stay home with our children, Denver and Shiloh. We started discussing our dreams and future goals for our family. My husband, David, has always had a skill for building, and I, Casey, enjoy hosting and creating an inviting environment. We wanted to use our gifts to bring joy to others but did not know where to start. After watching "Treehouse Masters" on television one day, it gave us the idea to build a treehouse in our backyard. It would be a chance to open our home and invite people worldwide to experience our little oasis. The work began in the beginning of January 2020. David spent every evening after work and weekends building this unique structure. Our children were involved and watched the whole process, which was very special for us. Our family and friends pitched in to help whenever they could. We spent much time at antique shops, hardware

stores and lumber yards. The treehouse was completed in December of 2020. We call it The Treehouse at Pine Meadows because of the enormous pine trees in our backyard. There is history within the walls. The windows are from an 1800's historic home in Savannah, Georgia. The floors came from an old cotton mill in Canton, Georgia. We found a stained glass window at a local antique shop and were told it came from a historic church in New York. We are intentional about the feel and experience for our guests. The small touches and details are important to us. We offer robes, a heated toilet seat in the outhouse, fresh flowers from our very own cut flower garden and even a "celebration package" for anniversaries or birthdays. Once guests arrive at our property, follow the outdoor string lights along the pathway and walk up the hand-crafted staircase that leads to a vintage front door. Inside, you will find a queen bed, a 100-year-old cabinet and an antique chair from an old parlor. Enjoy sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee in rocking chairs that look out into our meadow. Relax on the bed swing underneath with a gas fire pit while listening to birds chirp. Turn on the outdoor fans during the hot Georgia summer or enjoy Christmas lights inside and outside the treehouse during the holiday season. We also wanted a place where guests can be creative and make memories. We have had multiple photographers use our treehouse as a backdrop for photoshoots. My personal favorites are the weddings and vow renewals. It is a blessing and joy for our family to participate in this journey, from building the treehouse to meeting new and wonderful people. We look forward to more adventures at The Treehouse at Pine Meadows!

The practice of traditions are essential to our sense of belonging. Rituals are a way to express what is necessary to our hearts and connect us to our past and present loved ones. Holiday traditions, no matter how big or small, are like a tapestry woven together that binds us with our family history. David Westrick shares his favorite Thanksgiving traditions and the importance of togetherness. My family's most precious tradition is simply getting together. In my Mom and Dad's opinion, family meant everyone! Togetherness is a huge tradition because my immediate family lives in Georgia, and the rest of our family lives in Indiana and Kentucky. So our ritual includes traveling every other year to the other's homes. My Mom and Dad passed away eighteen years ago, and I am so proud that my sister and I have kept the tradition going. Every year, the traveling family arrives on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Once everyone has arrived, we feast on Chili (Yankee style with noodles), sandwiches and of course, it is not a Friday night dinner without the cream cheese and chipped beef ball with crackers. When everyone has finished their plates, the ladies get together and make my Granny's world-famous fruit salad. Saturday is for hanging out, cooking, eating, fellowshipping and loving on each other. Many stories are told, and we always finish with a game or two of Left, Right, Center with the whole family. I always wanted to start my own business, and with my extra downtime, while being out of work, this was the perfect time to start. Many candles you buy in-store are toxic for you and your home. I have learned a lot through the process of being a business owner! The biggest lesson I have learned is that it’s okay to fail. Failure is a good thing. Failure helped me learn what I needed to do to make my brand and candles better.

It does take a lot of work initially to find and formulate the perfect “formula” to blend the soy wax and fragrance oils. It is tedious and time-consuming, from cleaning every jar one by one, wicking jars, centering wicks and pouring wax to smoothing out the tops of the candles. There is so much love that goes behind creating these candles.

The Traditional Table Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table.

For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top of a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.
