Let the Adventure Begin! It´s an honor and pleasure for my husband and I to introduce ourselves to the entire Winter Garden City Lifestyle community as the new owners and publishers of this wonderful magazine. We are grateful to Anthony Adams and his family, who gave us this undertaking with his heart in his hand and we are wishing him and his family lots of health, prosperity, and love in his new journey. As we write these letters, I stop to look out my window and remember how grateful I am to God and the universe for all the opportunities we've had so far. I am grateful for my home, for my three beautiful children, for my family, and for this new city that welcomes us as we undertake this new endeavor. Living a life that now has the purpose to serve others by helping Winter Garden feel like a close community and welcoming home fills us with life and desire! We want this magazine to be about spreading good news, good vibes, finding and communicating unique and inspirational stories within our community. Our goal is to help empower local entrepreneurs and business owners by bringing them more exposure, credibility and awareness within our community. I believe that nothing in life happens simply because you say "yes". And after the last few weeks, it is now clear to me that nothing and nobody appears in your life by chance. Springtime is the last opportunity for us Floridians to get out and explore this beautiful state before the 90° weather sets in for the foreseeable future. Hiking, biking, kayaking, end-of-theyear field trips with your kids, or day excursions to the beach are all amazing ways to spend time outdoors and away from the mundane. However, mid-day energy crashes can put a damper on your adventure. While packaged cookies, crackers, and granola bars can certainly curb hunger pains, they only delay dragging feet, and their ingredients often miss the mark on “healthy.” But have no fear, Girl in the Green Apron has the perfect 5-ingredient snack to keep you alert and energized on your next adventure!
COCONUT CASHEW ENERGY BITES INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup salted Cashews • 1/3 cup unsweetened Shredded Coconut • 2 large Medjool Dates, pitted • ¼ tsp Cinnamon • ¼ tsp Pure Vanilla Extract • ¼ tsp Pure Almond Extract • 1 tbs Water
METHOD: 1. In a food processor, add coconut, cashews, and dates and blend on high for 30 seconds, or until everything is evenly chopped and combined. 2. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until a sticky mixture comes together into a ball. 3. Roll mixture into 1 TBS sized balls and coat with more shredded coconut (or cocoa powder for any chocolate lovers out there!)

The First Academy (TFA) is not your typical school. They pride themselves on exceptional education that directly meets Christianity. The campus grounds are filled with amazing Christian music between buildings for each grade, a state-of-the-art basketball arena, a courtyard for lunch, playgrounds, and even an “aquaponic” greenhouse. TFA is a place for students to have experiences that they can't find anywhere else and go on adventures they will remember forever! “In each stage at TFA, students have really exciting benchmarks they get to look forward to!” Megan Fleming, Creative Marketing and Alumni manager said. Fleming, who attended TFA for 13 years, graduated from the University of Florida studying Education and decided she loved her time at TFA so much she wanted to go back. “The people and the hearts at TFA are what make us different. Everyone has meaningful and spiritual connections here. And all these relationships carry on with you after graduation.” TFA offers so much more than an education. They are centered on Jesus Christ and God and sharing his love with their students, but also have rigorous academics with teachers who are there to support the students and prepare them for college.

From elementary to high school, students get to experience so many adventures. Whether it’s school picnics, dances, educational or mission trips, every student gets to experience a new adventure. “Senior year is the pinnacle for it all!” Seniors get to kick off their year with a twoday senior retreat where they head to a Young Life camp. There, they have speakers, worship music, fellowship, and small groups. “This is a great time for students to get to bond before

the year kicks off and be filled with the word of God.” The senior trip is also located on a huge lake, where they get to paddleboard, kayak, go down the water slide, and play beach volleyball! The last adventure all our seniors go on is the ski trip to Breckenridge, Colorado during spring break. “The memories and the friends that you make here are really important and you never know how something is going to impact you years down the road,” Fleming said. Senior Student, Sarah Jackson has been at TFA since kindergarten. “I have loved my time at TFA! Getting to know all my classmates since we were little and grow up together. It’s been special to have such close relationships and so many connections.” Sarah is a member of the cross country, track, and soccer teams, as well as being senior class president and valedictorian. “I also am a part of putting together our Dance Marathon which is our fundraising for Children's Miracle Networks Hospitals.” It’s clear Sarah has been an excellent student during her time at TFA but the school has made an impact on her as well. “TFA has taught me the importance of connections and relationships. Really taking the time to get to know your teacher, professor,

or boss can help you in the classroom or at work. I will always remember to find a connection first. Not only so you can learn from them, but also there is more to life than just success, which is having meaningful relationships with people.” Her next big adventure is college, but she’s not sure where yet! She is between Baylor, Auburn, and UF. She plans on studying communications sciences and disorders so she can be an audiologist working with children who have hearing disabilities, and hopefully, focus on those children in third-world countries who wouldn’t typically have access. Sarah has battled with hearing issues and having surgeries throughout her childhood which is what has fostered her desire to help others.

Jeff Alexander, who is a board member of TFA, Chairman of the Board for Mission Emanuel, and parent of TFA students, describes TFA as a transformational school where your children get to grow up in a loving and caring environment. “There are a lot of places your kids can get an education, but not one like this where they have all that but most importantly, they start with God” Alexander stated. His passion is in mission work and transforming children's lives through it. Mission Emanuel is an organization that promotes discipleship through short-term mission trips to the Dominican Republic that are focused on the transformation of the participants as well as the community. Alexander has personally seen the change in his kids when they went on their first mission trip all together through TFA. “My kids were able to see the joy in people who live completely different lives than us, which was life-changing for them,” Alexander stated. The trips are filled with hard work, but it’s also a time to connect and pray with the local community, and at the end of each day, they have devotionals. “It’s easy to miss the ‘God moments’ in our normal routine. But when you go on these trips and are outside of your normal life, you can see God so much easier.” CONTINUED >

If you would like to be a part of a Mission Emanuel trip or would like to donate, please check out their website for more information: missionemanuel.org Steve Kavanagh, who is has been a TFA Christian studies teacher for over 25 years, is also very involved in organizing mission trips and senior events. “The mission trips are an opportunity for them to connect with their peers, talk about the word of God, worship together, and make changes in their lives,” Kavanagh said. “Being a teacher at TFA is a new adventure each year.” He loves the one-onone and counseling he gets to do through small groups and even in the classroom. With a master's degree in psychology and counseling, he gets to be a spiritual leader in his students' lives and really make an impact. “At TFA, we do the Christian, the spiritual, and the academic all in a good balance.” This summer TFA is taking a few high school students on a first-time mission trip to Israel with an organization called Passages. This will be a historical and educational trip as well as a spiritual trip for the students. Whether you are a student, parent, or faculty, your time at The First Academy will be filled with adventure! From elementary school to high school, their time is filled with extraordinary experiences that are meant

Jesse Johnson was born and raised here in Orlando, Florida where he attended Foundation Academy and graduated in 2012. After high school, Johnson joined the Air Force. “I joined the military because it felt like it was something I needed to do. To give back to this country and follow in many of my family members' footsteps.” During his 8 years of service, he was stationed in North Dakota where he worked on the weapons systems of B-52 aircrafts then was stationed in South Korea for a year where he worked on the weapons systems of F-16 aircrafts. After separating in October 2020, Johnson came home and began working for Amazon. He was enjoying time with his wife of five years, Alexa, and their four-year-old son, Brooks, who also attends Foundation Academy. “Shortly after I got back and I was working for Amazon, I knew I could do more with my life. I wanted to be my own boss.” Johnson began looking into something he could buy into and expand in the Orlando area. That’s when he and his wife came across Doody Calls.
They decided to take on the adventure of a lifetime and become the Owner and operator of Doody Calls in the Orlando area. Doody Calls is a pet waste management company, that offers dog poop removal, yard deodorizing, and pet waste installation and management. “We want kids and families to spend more time outside and enjoy their backyard. Our job is to create clean and safe environments for the people of this community to enjoy being outdoors” Johnson stated. “We feel it's our job to encourage the community to get outside more!” I know we all love our dogs, but nobody wants to clean up after them, and frankly, who has the time? That’s why Doody Calls is the person to call. They offer cleanup for residents, commercial properties, and communities. “We are currently trying to expand into more commercial properties, where they have pet waste stations. Many times, those get neglected, so we want to help residents and communities by taking care of those for them.” Life is all about adventure and Johnson sure has had an adventurous life. From joining the Air Force right out of high school, working on some of the most powerful air crafts in the world, to starting a family, and now being a business owner, he knows better than most how to make the most of life. “Joining the military at 19 is probably my life's biggest adventure. Leaving everything you have ever known to go into the unknown is scary.” Johnson stated. “But starting this business and chasing my dreams of being a business owner is also an incredible journey.” Johnson with Doody Calls is doing more than cleaning up our community. Being a Veteran owned and operated business, they want to hire other veterans who may need a job. Many times

when veterans come home, they aren’t able to work full-time or work a traditional job. A job with Doody Calls would allow them to work when they needed, work at their own pace, be outside getting fresh air and exercise, and they would be helping the community. Johnson said they also want to continue hiring neurodivergent people. “We want to give people who have ADHD, OCD, or disabilities opportunities.” When asked what his advice was to anyone looking for more adventure or their purpose, Johnson stated, “Don’t be afraid to take risks. The fear of failure severely limits the potential for greatness.” From serving this county to now serving his community, Jesse Johnson with Doody Calls is making a difference. I’m on a plane from Orlando to Key West and we land in another 30 minutes. But here’s what's truly remarkable... I just left the house about an hour ago! No exaggeration. This is what flying with a private charter company is all about. And after the experience we had with the Key West Executive Air Charter crew, I wouldn’t recommend flying with anyone else. Andy Yasurek and owner Joe Lamiroult have been working together since 2008. “My official title is flight coordinator/pilot but as far as the business goes, I run the day-to-day operation,” Andy explained. Joe is the chief pilot. And along with their office manager/accountant Natalia, chief pilot Greg and operations director Mack, they have up to seven pilots on the crew. The fleet consists of four Cessna 441 Conquest II turboprops and their newest toy, a Citation CJ4 Gen2 — the fastest single-pilot in production. CONTINUED >

We know them, we know their families.” “All of us have worn captain’s uniforms in the past, but none of us like it. And that’s not why people come to us. It’s because we treat everyone like family and have fun,” Andy shared. “Whatever their status in life, regardless of how much money they have, we treat everyone the same. We know them, we know their families.” He remembers one year at Augusta on Easter day. “I had nothing better to do so I ran to the store and got little baskets to put on the seats. When the kids boarded the plane, they were like ‘Look, the Easter Bunny came to the airplane last night!’” It’s moments like this that speak volumes about the company. While the idea of chartering a jet for your next vacation or business trip may seem out of reach, consider this. When we arrived at Orlando Executive Airport, we parked our cars and were boarding the aircraft a few minutes later. While waiting for one other plane to finish its takeoff, we settled into our seats. Minutes later we were in the air enjoying the stunning view. And the flight back from Key West was no different. There were no long waits anywhere, like standing in line for ticketing and TSA screening. And the entire process was seamless. Then there’s the cost. “We get a lot of small groups like bachelor parties. Let’s say you and your friends want to fly to an island in the Bahamas using a commercial airline. We’re talking between $800 and $1,200, and it’s going to take you all day to get there,” Andy estimates. “It’s actually cheaper for you to pool your money and fly with us. Plus, you don’t have to worry about missing the plane because you control the schedule. And you can bring all your stuff, like a beer cooler. We’ve had

clients bring everything from tile for replacing their bathroom floor to an actual toilet!” Sometimes things don’t pan out and trips fall through. That’s when the crew gets creative. “I had a group of people who were on their way to do a ski trip. Unfortunately, there was a bad ice storm and the slopes were closed. The whole trip went south instantly. My client, his daughter and her friends were stuck in Washington at the airport,” Andy recalls. “So, he calls me up and the next thing you know I’ve got the whole thing set up — the Atlantis Bahamas resort in Nassau. ‘Why Atlantis,’ he wanted to know. I’ll tell you why. You’ve got a group of girls who aren’t going to want anything to do with you. Atlantis has everything possible for them to do — a water park, swimming with sharks and laying by the pool for starters. They can do all this and never leave the area. Maybe you want to go to the casino,” he explained. “Better yet, you could set it up to where it’s all-inclusive, and you don’t have to keep handing them a credit card. So that’s what we did.” It’s not hard to tell that Andy and the rest of the crew love what they do. “Before your team got here, I told Natalia, ‘I can’t wait to see the expressions on their faces because here’s what’s going to happen. You guys are going to get on the plane and be like, ‘This is cool.’ But it’s not going to hit you until you’re on the ground, you smell that salt air and you’re in Key West. Then you grab a bite to eat. And when you get back you’re going to say, ‘My goodness, I just flew to Key West for lunch!’ You did something epic and you’re home in time for dinner. That is why people fly private.”

If you are reading this, you are probably a Muggle. No, I’m not writing this article from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I am, however, in a very different, but just as exciting secret society. There is a worldwide adventure game that you have unknowingly walked past thousands of times in thousands of places since the year 2000. Those who don’t know about the game are called Muggles, and those who play are called Geocachers. Do you remember how new and exciting it was to buy and use one of those dash-mounted GPS navigation devices for your car? While most of us saw those talking boxes, that left a permanent ring on the dashboards of cars, as a symbol of the crème de la crème of society to afford such a luxury; others were excited about the possibilities that came with the extremely accurate and newly public applications of GPS technology. GPS technology was changed on May 2nd, 2000, when twenty-four satellites around the globe were given the task of increasing GPS accuracy. The next day, GPS enthusiast and computer programmer, Dave Ulmer, had the idea for “The Great American GPS Stash Hunt”. Located in Beavercreek, Oregon, Mr. Ulmer was part of a popular GPS enthusiast internet group. He proposed that each member hide a container in the woods and provide only the GPS coordinates for other members to locate the container. Within three days, two users found Mr. Ulmer’s hidden container containing a slingshot, software, books, videos, money, and a can of beans and wrote about their experiences. This new game
was given life and immortalized with a plaque that sits at the original stash site. The Great American Stash Hunt was growing fast and wide. It was no longer isolated to the US and needed a new name. Matt Stum wordsmithed the term Geocaching by fusing two words. Geo signifies the game using geography all around the globe. Cache is a French term for a ‘hiding place to store items’. This name is very fitting to the game because it is a worldwide treasure hunt. It is where technology meets adventure. Geocaching has evolved from the simple internet group of GPS enthusiasts to having many websites and apps for your phone. The application my family uses is called Geocaching which is developed by Groundspeak Inc. My husband, our two boys, and I will make a day out of Geocaching. Loaded up with healthy snacks and lots of sunscreen, we open our Geocaching app, find a cache we have yet to find, and take off. When you select a cache, you follow the GPS provided on the app to lead you to the coordinates. When you get to the coordinate location, it comes down to you. There may be clues written in the cache description, and there may be clues in your surroundings, but it is up to you to find the cache. Inside the cache, you will find a log to sign and some trinkets. The tradition of “Take some stuff, leave some stuff” is still applicable today. The first cache we ever found was in our very own neighborhood. Once we pulled that giant PVC pipe out of the ground and opened it to find toys, coins, and a log to sign

The next day we walked around downtown Winter Garden finding caches hidden under bricks, light post skirts, and park benches with fake bolts (hint, hint). Geocaching has been a way to get my boys off the screens and out of the house to use their problem-solving skills while tickling their adventure bones. There are hundreds of caches around Winter Garden, Windermere, and Horizon West. That isn’t hyperbolic, there are literally hundreds of them. Thousands if you expand your search to the entire Orlando area. There are over two
million active geocaches worldwide. No matter where you go on vacation or a business trip, you can log some caches. There are caches as far as Australia, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, England, France, etc. Every corner of the globe will be littered with caches to find. So, if you are ever out in public and see a random person or family checking all the bolts in a park bench or lifting the skirt to a light post, they are fellow geocachers. Now that you know about this secret game, will you remain a Muggle or join the adventure and become a Geocacher?
