The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

Hey y’all, it’s Westly from Healthy West Orange, here to cheer you on and spread the word about local health resources and events. It’s pretty much the best job ever. I am living for this “winter” weather here in Central Florida! It makes me want to spend a ton of time outside and relaxing in nature. My favorite way to do just that is to have a picnic. So, pack your picnic basket, blanket, and snacks, because I’ve found some awesome spots in our community.
DR. PHILLIPS COMMUNITY PARK: I love to sit and relax in the shade under the many pavilions. This park is super close to local attractions, you can even see the Wheel at ICON Park! There are sidewalks throughout the park, which are perfect for a walk or bike rides. Bring those bathing suits and stay cool in the splash pad! It’s truly fun for the whole fam, because there’s a dog park too!
Healthy West Orange Arts & Heritage Center at the Town of Oakland & Oakland Nature Preserve Make a pit stop off the West Orange Trail at the Healthy West Orange Arts & Heritage Center at the Town of Oakland! There are beautiful oak trees offering shade, restrooms and water fountains, and head inside the Center for some air conditioning and amazing local art. As you continue West down the Trail, take a break at Oakland Nature Preserve! There are many trails to explore, including the handicap accessible Healthy West Orange Boardwalk. The Education Center and several pavilions throughout the Preserve are great for catching some shade.
TUCKER RANCH RECREATION AND NATURE COMPLEX IN WINTER GARDEN: The pavilions with picnic tables are a great place to get out of the sun and
enjoy snacks. The huge playground is awesome! Take a walk on the beautiful nature trails through giant oak trees to a lake. This park is pet friendly!
QUICK TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL PICNIC: • If the Florida heat creeps back in, head out in the morning or the evening when the temperature is more tolerable. How lovely does a brunch or happy hour picnic sound?! • Pack those personal fans! Having a breeze will keep your fam nice and cool. • Take steps to practice food safety! When prepping your food, don’t cross contaminate, pack a cooler or insulated bag with plenty of ice packs, and put raw meats for grilling on the bottom of the cooler. OR NA M EN Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. SA LT DOUGH R ECIPE
SUPPLIES NEEDED

Rolling Pin Cookie Cutters (optional) Plastic or Metal Straw Cookie Sheet Parchment Paper Lettered Stamps Acrylic Sealer Bakers Twine
INGR EDIENTS

1 cup All Purpose White Flour ½ cup Table Salt ½ cup Water (give or take) 4oz White Acrylic Paint
STEP-BY-STEP 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick. 3. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking. 4. Place ornaments on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake. 5. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side. 6. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. the decor There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

the snacks Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation. WHAT YOU NEED • Cheese board or serving plate • Assortment of cheeses We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Are you in need of some luck for the upcoming year? Wearing red underwear for the night may give you some. + MEXICO Be sure to have lots of grapes on hand. Demonstrated by Spaniards as well, this tradition involves eating 12 grapes with every strike of the clock, symbolizing good luck for every month of the new year. + DENMARK Destroy your frustrations and start the year fresh by smashing unwanted glassware. Danish tradition calls for smashing plates on the doors of friends and loved ones around midnight, but we think you should probably save that part for when you’re actually in Denmark. + SCOTLAND Although its singing has become pretty standard worldwide, “Auld Lang Syne” originated in Scotland in 1788 as a poem by Robert Burns. Go ahead and make a cheat sheet for all your friends—we won’t judge.
