As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our family and community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are helping with finding the right tutor and teaching your kids about finance. Mike introduces us to Fresh Kitchen, and Madison delivers another recipe sure to cool your days off. We also meet Chris and Paris Lui at MÖGE TEE, and Dr. Wendi shares the pitfalls of "The Pacifier." We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with your fur-kids as well! Enjoy the last few days of summer break, and as it comes to a close, we hope you can take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love – two and four-legged! The West Orange Dog Park is a local favorite. The park has “big dog” and “small dog” areas, plenty of shade, and a large extra tall fence around the park border to keep your pooch safe and cool during the summer months. In addition, the dog park is a great place to socialize and get some energy out.

Crooked Can Brewing Company in Downtown Winter Garden boasts a great patio and green area to relax with a pint and your pup. In addition, they carry dog merchandise, including dog collars, leashes, and a toy bone adorned with the Crooked Can logo. They even host a 2nd Sunday’s event in collaboration with Our Cause 4 Paws Rescue with live music, adoptable pups, and family fun.

WINTER GARDEN FARMER’S MARKET The Winter Garden Farmer’s Market is a great weekend outdoor activity to bring your favorite furry friend along. In addition to the various vendors for humans, you’ll likely find vendors with pet supplies and freshly made treats.

Whether you’re soaking up the last few days of Summer break or want to give your little ones a healthy treat after school or sports practice, these creamy fruit popsicles will do the trick. For kids all around Central Florida, Summer vacation is winding to an end, as the first day of school is just around the corner. While beach trips may become less frequent, and school supply runs may be at the top of your to-do list, there are still fun activities you and your little ones can enjoy at home to keep their spirits high. Just grab your favorite frozen fruit, a jug of milk, and some honey, and you can turn a regular day into a special summer memory with your kids. Plus, you’ll feel good about giving them a healthy treat to beat the heat! So give these three-ingredient fruit popsicles a try! Not only are they great for the kids, but pour any leftover mix into an ice cube tray to make a low-cal dessert for mom and dad)!

INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups frozen fruit (I used 1 cup blueberries and 1 cup mango for two different flavors) • ½ - 1 cup whole milk (you can substitute with soy, almond, or coconut milk) • ¼-1/2 cup honey or your favorite sweetener • ½ Cup reserved whole pieces of frozen fruit for decoration Supplies: • Silicone Popsicle Molds Method: Place the frozen fruit and honey in a blender or food processor and add a little bit of milk at a time, blending in intervals until the mixture is thick, blended, and creamy. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking. With your popsicle mold, gently slide in the whole reserved pieces of frozen fruit either on the side or push to the bottom for a pretty design. Spoon in the blended fruit mixture into each mold, pushing down to ensure there are no air pockets. Put the top on the molds, insert the popsicle sticks, and place on a level surface in the freezer for 2-3 hours until set.

BONUS RECIPE: PUP POPS We can’t forget about our furry friends! They feel these 90-degree plus temperatures just like we do. After long walks in the Florida heat with my pup, sometimes water just doesn’t cut it. So I like to keep these healthy frozen treats in my freezer all summer long to help her cool down after our outdoor excursions. Three simple ingredients will have your pup wagging their tail with excitement! Ingredients: • 1 Cup No Sugar Added Peanut Butter • 1 Banana • ¼-1/2 Cup of Milk or Water • Optional: Add beef or chicken liver if you want to make them even more craveable for your pup! Supplies: • Paw-Shaped Silicone Molds Method: Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor, pour into the paw molds, and freeze 2-3 hours. AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . tasting food around. One of the most interesting things that I learned was they use pure olive oil to cook everything instead of using the typical canola oil or a lesser quality oil. This makes such a meaningful difference in taste and I implore everyone to pick up on this when you visit. From sweet potato noodles to coconut ginger rice and everything in between, you can build your bowl with a variety of options to choose from. Even the proteins you can pick from like the grilled citrus chicken or the herb grilled steak will tease your tastebuds and make them want more. My recommendation for the roasted veggies would be to pick the maple golden spice chickpeas and the sesame green beans. At Fresh Kitchen, they want to make sure you leave fully satisfied and completely nourished because they are always keeping your health in mind and that includes making sure your body is getting only the best. They originated out of Tampa with the goal to bring not only high-quality food to people but to also help positively impact those communities too. This year many families are faced with unprecedented financial challenges. Our early experiences with money set the tone for how we approach career, spending, debt, and ideas about wealth. We’ve taught them how to ride a bike, how to read, but have we taught them how to manage money? Without the proper education in dealing with money, children are at risk of becoming financially irresponsible in life. By engaging your child about how money works, you can save them and yourself some heartache by teaching them the basics of smart money management. Have The Conversation – The best time to start teaching your kids about money is the age they begin to count. Start by identifying, sorting, and counting coins. Play games like “Store,” where kids exchange money for items, introducing them to the basics of shopping.

Let Them Spend It – An allowance helps teach the relationship between work and money. Age 6 or 7 is a good time to begin giving your child a small allowance and an opportunity to teach money management and good savings habits. In addition, youth checking accounts (start for children 13-years and older at most financial institutions) are practical and make sense for young people around the time they enter high school, get their driver’s license, and get a job. The Power Of Interest - Encourage Savings by matching what they put into a savings account and let them see how interest grows their money over time. You can also use savings bonds. Don’t Bail Them Out – If you loan them money, make them pay it back. Create an IOU. What they learn, and you teach them, about the cost of money could pay them back later in life – when it really matters. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

I understand this is a sticky topic, yet its importance begs for more understanding and education. Of course, I’m talking about the pacifier. You know him, Mr. Bobo, Binky, Paci, Nuknuk, yes, I’m talking about that guy. The mouth is the largest access to the inside of the body. Ninety percent of systemic disease has an oral footprint, so it communicates the health of 90% of the body. Your mouth is in the center of the action; therefore, oral problems can only travel in 2 directions: up or down, your brain or your heart. There is a systemic connection between your mouth and the rest of the body. The mouth is the first part of your digestive system, which is important when we understand that the digestive system makes up eighty percent of your immune system. Your mouth houses your teeth which allows you to masticate your food, preparing the digestive process. Your mouth provides for communication through speech. It also has the strongest muscle for its size; the strong man, the tongue, which forms the floor of the nose, the airway, and the position of teeth. As you can see, the mouth is a pretty big deal, and assuring it’s healthy and clean is just part of guaranteeing overall health through it. Let’s talk about this strong man, the tongue. Did you know that his primary residence is the roof of your mouth? It lives there because it forms the floor of the nose allowing for proper nasal breathing. You can only breathe clean air through your nose. Breathing through the mouth does not allow the nasal passages and sinuses to sterilize the air you breathe. The airway is formed when the tongue is at home in the roof of the mouth. The tongue is a very

strong muscle, and because our muscles shape our bones, it guides the teeth into proper placement and alignment. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several benefits for pacifiers in ages 6 months or less with the primary purposes of soothing, comforting the baby, and possibly assisting in decreasing SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). However, studies also show that after 6 months, usually past the threat of SIDS, pacifiers are most likely three times the cause of middle ear infections. At 6 months, we also expect to see the first baby tooth on the lower front of the mouth. What happens after 6 months? The baby is still being soothed, yet bad habits are being formed. The pacifier sits on the top of the tongue, blocking it from the roof of the mouth. The tongue on a growing baby has a big job. When it is allowed to rise to the top (roof) of the mouth, it forms the base of the nose and nasal passages and the baby’s airway. It also widens the roof to allow proper space for the baby and eventually permanent teeth to erupt. The tongue is the enforcer of this development. Usually, at around 6 months, the 1st tooth arrives, and by 2 years old, the child has twenty teeth. One of the roles of baby teeth is to be the forerunner of adult teeth. The permanent teeth follow the road map (the roots) of the baby teeth to erupt in proper alignment. By twenty teeth, the tongue should have established adequate width in the roof of the mouth. If this has not occurred, it will produce underdeveloped jaws, crowding, and misalignment of the adult teeth. Unfortunately, this is not the only outcome as the tongue also forms the floor of the nose and airway.

According to the American Dental Association, the use of a pacifier can lead to crowded or crooked teeth. Misaligned teeth contribute to chewing problems, jaw pains, headaches, migraines, and social concerns due to malocclusions or bucked teeth. Some studies say a baby is three times more likely to get ear infections if using a binky after six (6) months. Alternatives to the Binky are breastfeeding, rocking, bouncing, white noise, and teething toys. It is shown that seventy-five to eighty percent of babies in Western countries use pacifiers for: • Suck reflex; lowers Blood Pressure, heart rate, and stress levels • Soothing • Security It is thought that less than thirty percent of adults have correctly aligned teeth in Western countries. Could this misalignment have started when they were infants? A pacifier will help pop your baby’s ears during a flight as they cannot do so yet from swallowing. But after 6 months, that soothing benefit pales next to misaligned teeth, headaches, speech problems, sleep apnea, allergies, asthma, and breathing disorders. Once tooth development begins around 6 months, consider proper mouth growth and tongue placement without the barrier of the pacifier.

Tutors are an effective way to get kids back on track and keep them there. But how do you find a good and reliable tutor you can trust? What if hiring a tutor isn’t in your budget? Today, there are many options.

HOW TO FIND A TUTOR Your child’s teacher and the school administrator are an excellent place to start. They might be able to recommend a tutor in your community and online resources to help your child. Also, chances are that one of your child’s friends at school has a tutor. So, ask other parents for recommendations as well. There are also several websites for helping parents find tutors. VarsityTutors.com has a searchable database of tutors. Just enter your zip code, and the school subject, the site also shows tutors’ ratings, specialties, and fees per session. Another resource is Care.com, which connects people with various professional services, including tutors. Online tutoring is another popular choice, though, it isn’t right for every child. Experience in tutoring varies widely, so check reviews and ask for references.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TUTOR Is the tutor qualified? Your best bet is to look for someone with a teaching degree since tutoring requires skills that not everyone possesses. For younger students, if the tutor has a teaching degree, specialization in a particular subject isn't necessary. From high school and beyond, look for a tutor with expertise in the subject your child needs help with.

Does the tutor have the right personality? A tutor should be patient, empathetic, positive, passionate, creative, and fun. These characteristics help ensure your child can learn from the tutor and will walk away with self-confidence. Also, be sure the tutor's personality should connect with your child. Is the tutor flexible? Each child has their own best learning style. It might be visual, aural, physical, verbal, logical, or any combination of these. Also, some kids are solitary learners, whereas others are social learners and enjoy learning in groups. Look for a setting and tutor that fits your kid's style. Does the tutor have excellent references? Online tutoring services often have reviews from previous clients. Look for those with overall high ratings and positive comments. But beware of reviews directly on the tutoring company's website since these can often be manipulated. If you find your tutor offline or find very few reviews, ask for several references. Still, the references a tutor provides might not be an entirely accurate depiction of their character and experience either. So, use due diligence for your child's safety and to ensure your child receives quality service.
