LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrating The Women In Our Lives! Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made in my life, family, and our community. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own lives can come naturally to do. Still, the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our lives and the greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, heard, and understood. When we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down, and warmth follows. Appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life; our Wives, Partners, Mothers, Grandmothers, Great-Grandmothers, and Single Parents. Thank them for their impact. You won’t regret it! In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of seven extraordinary women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community which has left us inspired. We also have stories on a local female-owned bakery, unique spas you must try, and have some pup pictures from Windermere’s Pet Fest. We also hear from Dr. Wendi Wardlaw, one of our newest Contributing Writers and local Dentist, on the importance of Sleep. We also want to send some love to our Advertising Partners. We support Buying Local! Every one of the businesses and organizations you see advertising in our magazine has been vetted by us and has the same involvement and dedication to our community as we do. Also, Don’t forget to follow and like us on Facebook and Instagram at @WinterGardenCityLifestyle. Thank you for inviting us into your home and sharing your lives with us. Here’s to you and your family; live boldly, enjoy our community, be involved, and truly Live Your Best Life!

SHARE YOUR BACKGROUND: “I was born and raised as a fifth-generation Floridian. I moved here from Fort Pierce in 1970 to take advantage of more career and lifestyle opportunities. I worked my way up from a receptionist position at several title insurance companies. I was always working for an underwriter to professionally help people close on sold homes. After successfully working for other title insurance companies that were sold or closed, I eventually opened Treasure Title in 2001 as a full-service title insurance agency that goes beyond traditional real estate to commercial and church closings. I have a great staff! After 20 years, I am honored to have helped three generations of families with real estate transactions here in West Orange County. I am proud and thankful to have received the Danniel J. Petro Award, as ‘The Bright Future of West Orange’ from the West Orange Chamber of Commerce in ‘Recognition of my steadfast determination that facilitates opportunities through lifelong relationships and investments in our community. I have always loved helping the West Orange Chamber of Commerce.” WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU TELL YOUNGER WOMEN? “Remember to explore the very best options and opportunities that you can with the information you have at the time you need to make any decision!” SHARE YOUR SECRET INGREDIENT TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS? “Always have a positive attitude that will support the clients and your entire team! Always show up dressed for success! Be ready to show and demonstrate to everyone that you are in business to be in business every day.” DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUOTE? “Always do what’s right … for the right reason!”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LOVE FOR CHARITABLE WORK: “I stay in front of my customers by staying involved. I am proud to be able to work with quite a few charities, including the Florida Sheriff’s Ranch, Compassion International, Camp Boggy Creek, Shepard’s Hope, House of Hope, Insight for Living, West Orange Habitat, Central Florida Women’s League, West Orange Chamber Foundation, Horizon West Rotary, Jimmy Crabtree Cancer Fund and my favorite – Special Hearts Farm. They all deserve help and assistance from our community. I also do a lot of church closings to help other parishioners. I am a better person for giving my help and support to them and our community!” WHAT IS YOUR BEST-KEPT SECRET? “My retired husband, Joe, is my personal clothing shopper!”

DESCRIBE YOUR BACKGROUND: “I married my high school sweetheart Ryan, and I am a Mom to my beautiful 3-year-old little girl. I have lived in Central Florida since 2007, and we moved to Winter Garden in 2016. We fell in love with the sense of community this city offers. I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Marketing. I worked 12 years for Disney in Entertainment. After Disney, I stepped into a new role with DreamUp Sports Management as their Marketing and Events Manager. We have made many special memories here in Winter Garden.”
DESCRIBE YOUR PAGEANT PURPOSE: ”I am proud to be the first to hold the Mrs. title for Winter Garden in the Mrs. Florida America Pageant. I am using my platform to raise awareness of healthy living while partnering with the Shepherd’s Hope Organization to provide care to uninsured and underinsured patients. In addition, I am an ambassador for their new HEAL program, healthy eating active lifestyles. I will be representing Winter Garden when competing for the title of Mrs. Florida America on May 21st. Mrs. America has been the most prestigious pageant program for married women since 1977. It is the preliminary pageant to Mrs. America, featuring America’s most accomplished married women.”
SHARE YOUR COMMUNITY PASSIONS: “I am proud to be working with Shepherd’s Hope Organization. I have connected with several communities, including elementary and high school students and senior citizens. An important part of Healthy living is mental health. I am raising awareness for Victoria’s Voice Foundation. Victoria’s Voice started after Victoria Siegel passed away from a drug overdose at the age of 18. We are experiencing the worst overdose rates we have ever seen in the USA. I am working to raise awareness about substance abuse and support youth and families in overcoming addiction. My live Wellness Wednesday’s Segments have become a way to get people motivated and empowered to take action on their health journey.”

Laura Coar Director of Winter Garden Parks & Recreation
SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE: “I have always lived and worked here in Central Florida. I am a degreed Horticulturist. I have experience managing recreational, educational, production, and guest service programs. I have worked with Walt Disney World, Rollins College, and The City of Winter Garden. At Disney, I eventually transferred to their Horticulture Department. I appreciate the mentorships and the many opportunities; I was given to grow and develop professionally with the difference a mentor can make. In Disney’s Horticulture program, my favorite role was being a part of the development of the first Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. I loved all of my roles at Walt Disney World, yet it was time for a new adventure. I became the Director of Landscape & Grounds at Rollins College for 12 years before becoming Parks Operation Director for The City of Winter Garden. A year later, I assumed the role of Director of Parks & Recreation. We have an incredible staff that loves what they do, and I love enabling them to do it. It is important to me to enjoy a collaborative environment internally and with the community.” DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE: “I am lucky enough to be doing what I love! I enjoy change and the opportunities it brings. I would never function well in an environment
where no change occurs. I am not comfortable being comfortable. I believe in servant leadership. I love to see others succeed. It is my mission to be a good leader and to somehow have a positive impact on those I lead. It is what truly makes me happy!” WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? “We need to understand that we are all different and unique. The secret lies in finding the combinations of unique people that work well as a team. I try to make my team understand that it is ok to disagree with me, as long as you tell me. I tell them to change my mind!” BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? “Pay attention to the games people play and understand their motives. You don’t have to play, but you have to know what is going around you, or it will swallow you whole. Consider it a strategy that allows you to navigate situations and personalities and successfully move the vision forward. Do the right thing for the right reasons. Don’t be selfish!” WHAT IS YOUR BEST-KEPT SECRET? “Not really a secret, yet I love to see my team succeed as individuals and get credit for their efforts. I hate the attention on me. WORTHY CAKES
Asha Worthy-Robinson
You've probably seen "Worthy Cakes" at your local farmer's market; they are known for their "Jakes" or "Cake in Jars." However, they have a brick-and-mortar right in Winter Garden. Meet Asha Worthy-Robinson, the owner of Worthy Cakes. She has been passionate about baking sweets since she was a little girl. She was known in middle school as "the girl who brought cupcakes to class" and acquired up many friends that way. Asha was selftaught and picked up a lot from her family on baking sweets. After college, she was encouraged by her mother, Grace, to turn her passion into more than just a hobby but an actual business. Grace helped her get the business up and running and still helps her to this day as well as Asha's husband and sisters. They launched Worthy Cakes and initially were working the farmer's markets in Winter Garden on Saturdays and Downtown Orlando at Lake Eola on Sundays. Then, they expanded to open their brick and mortar at 13391 W Colonial Drive. After running
across the county to gather supplies to keep the business running, they decided to also sell baking supplies. This was a huge relief to many local bakers in the same situation. This lets Asha bake in one spot without having to spend hours driving to find supplies. She carries an impressive variety of inventory, from cookie cutters and cake drip bottles to fun sprinkles and food dyes. All of these are available for purchase at their location and their custom cakes, cake jars, and more. One of the most important things they try to achieve is making a cake that everyone can try. This is precisely why they incorporate Vegan, Keto, and Gluten-Free cakes into their product line and, all while making sure they taste just as delicious for their customers as the regular ones. They try and switch up their flavors seasonally to keep it fresh and trendy even. If they get repeated requests for a specific flavor, they will work to perfect that cake recipe. They also have a "return your jar for a discount" policy which is very CONTINUED >

popular and helps keep costs down on new supplies. Their biggest sellers are going to be their "Cake in a Jar" and their "Push up Cakes." The greatest thing about these is that it is easy to eat on the go without having to cut a piece of cake and box it up; you can just eat it straight from the jar with the spoon they provide. So next time you find yourself in Winter Garden, Winter Park, or Downtown Orlando, look for these Worthy Cakes at your local farmer's market booth. You can also visit them at 13391 W Colonial Dr, Winter Garden, FL 34787 or online at WorthyCakes.com.

Sleep Matters WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY WENDI WARDLAW
DR. WENDI WARDLAW
Do you know… …the importance of breathing through our noses and not our mouths? As the largest access point to the inside of your body, the mouth is directly connected to 80% of your immune system. It is the door to your gut. In this season, where many breathe through the mouth, it is essential to understand how crucial nasal breathing is in order to decrease the effects of disease and illness. When you breathe through your nose, it warms and lubricates the air you breathe, protecting your respiratory system. It also increases oxygen levels in your blood, a natural vasodilator decreasing your blood pressure while increasing systemic, whole-body healing. But, most importantly, it cleans the air you’re breathing by stimulating NO (Nitric Oxide) produced in the nose and sinuses. NO is a potent antimicrobial against VIRUSES, bacteria, fungi and is active in nasal breathing, unlike mouth breathing. In addition, research shows that our nose hairs protect us from up to 20 billion dust, allergens, and foreign particles daily. This information should make you consider how you are breathing. If you or those you love have chronic and persistent allergies, are you breathing through the nose or through the mouth?Understanding the necessity of nasal breathing begs the question, does it affect how we sleep? Yes, indeed it does! It turns out that nasal breathing is essential in our overall health, and not sleeping well is attributed to many

common systemic diseases. This is what the fuss is all about! Mouth breathing while sleeping puts you at greater risk of the tongue obstructing the airway, causing sleep disorders including: snoring, sleep apnea (pausing or stopping breathing), and hypopnea (shallow and not enough oxygen) when sleeping. Why is getting good sleep so overrated…or is it? REM sleep is deep sleep, restorative sleep, sleep that cleans the brain, increases its function, and repairs and builds the immune system. Most of us can sleep for hours and still wake up tired. So are we getting good sleep? This is an important question that we need to start asking. My name is Dr. Wendi Wardlaw, and I’m a Dentist. Sleep matters to me because it is the tongue that forms the roof of the mouth, which is the floor of the nose, which forms the airway. This is my area so let’s talk about getting healthy.
Humming is known to increase the body’s NO(Nitric Oxide). So if you add humming to your nasal breathing, you will trigger your parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn causes RELAXATION. NO is good for our health and wellness.
