The Season of Giving
December arrives with cozy traditions, glowing lights, and that unmistakable holiday magic. Around Windsor and beyond, our local businesses and nonprofits are celebrating this season with heart and flair. As you explore this issue, you’ll discover Carrie’s Cause, brightening lives with poinsettias delivered to assisted living communities—bringing warmth to those who often feel overlooked. OnGrade Plumbing & Excavating is con tributing in their own way, proving generosity doesn’t always need a stage to make an impact. Health4Heroes continues to champion our veterans with a mission close to many hearts. They’re raising support for a van to help more heroes access care, resources, and community programs—because some gifts don’t fit in a box. If a little adventure is calling your name, Melissa with Dream Vacations shares festive destinations and helpful travel insights. And of course, seasonal style brings its own kind of joy. Dressing for holiday gatherings can lift spirits just as brightly as the décor around us. Soft lights, thoughtful gestures, and moments shared with those we love create memories that stay long after the season fades. Whether through service, celebration, or simply being present, let’s embrace every bit of this month. Because when community, kindness, and a touch of sparkle come together, the magic is felt in every smile, every glimmer, and every story we share.
Here’s to warmth, generosity, and festive flair this December!

WRAPPED IN KINDNESS
Norfolk Iron & Metal Shows How Teamwork and Generosity Can Make a Lasting Difference Year-Round
Each December, the halls of Norfolk Iron & Metal fill with the sounds of laughter, wrapping paper, and the unmistakable spirit of giving. What began as a simple desire to give back has become a cherished company tradition—one that brings their entire team together to make the holidays brighter for local families in need.
Partnering with Alpine Staffing, Norfolk Iron & Metal helps identify families who could use a little extra joy during the season. From there, the team goes to work—collecting wish lists, organizing donations, and transforming their workspace into a cheerful hub of generosity. Employees pitch in with everything from shopping for gifts to wrapping

presents and delivering them to Alpine Staffing, where the families are invited to pick up their gifts.
On that day, the Norfolk team gets to meet the families face-to-face—a moment that brings the entire effort full circle.
“It’s deeply fulfilling for everyone involved,” shares Diane Hutchison, HR Manager at Norfolk
Iron & Metal. “Our employees are motivated by the joy that comes from making a difference. Seeing the gratitude and happiness of the families we adopt reminds us why this tradition matters so much.”
For the Norfolk team, this effort goes beyond charity—it’s about connection. Many employees say their favorite moments come when they have
the chance to meet the families in person. There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s eyes light up with joy or hearing a parent’s heartfelt thank-you. Those glimpses of gratitude stay with the team long after the holidays have passed, serving as a reminder of the difference kindness can make.
The company’s partnership with Alpine Staffing has also strengthened its ties to the community. Together, they combine resources and relationships to create a more organized, impactful outreach program—one that reflects the values both organizations share.
But Norfolk’s commitment to giving doesn’t end when the decorations come down. The team continues to support local causes yearround, sponsoring community events and contributing to organizations like the Greeley Stampede, Weld Food Bank, and Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity.
For Norfolk Iron & Metal, generosity isn’t just a holiday tradition—it’s a reflection of who they are every day of the year: a company powered by people, compassion, and the belief that even small acts of kindness can spark lasting change.

ARTICLE BY SAM WEBB
Sometimes you read a book and just think this one is going to be loved for years to come. It’s that way with The Old Sleigh by Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey. This wonderful picture book beautifully evokes the joy of family, community, and cozy winters — perfect for curling up on the couch with the little ones for warm, cozy family time. The old sleigh delivers wood to all the houses in town, and this humble business supports a loving family. But as the town grows and the sleigh grows older, it breaks, causing problems for everyone! The loving restoration by the father, and how the new wood on the sleigh is shown in the drawings, is simply wonderful. But also, the son’s urge to help his family by taking the old pieces and building a little sleigh so he can also do deliveries is truly heartwarming. Of course, in the end, all works out - and that new little sleigh is wonderful for more than just delivering wood!
Words of Windsor is ready to help serve your Christmas and holiday needs with beautiful books and cozy gifts. Their holiday hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sundays, 12 p.m.–4 p.m.
A heartwarming story of tradition and family, The Old Sleigh deserves a spot on your holiday bookshelf.

HEALTH4HEROES BRINGS HEALING, PURPOSE, AND OPPORTUNITY TO THOSE CARRYING HIDDEN BURDENS
ARTICLE BY DANA OLSON
U.S Army Combat Veteran, Nicholas Dunagan knows firsthand the pain of invisible scars. He carried the burden of trauma and faced the hopelessness of ever moving beyond it….until he found a community that understood and supported him. He knows through lived experience that the greatest relief comes not from silence, but from shared healing. Nick was able to turn his pain into purpose and built Health4Heroes to help others do the same.
The path to restoration for veterans, first responders, and their families often begins with prescription medications meant to ease the weight of the pain they carry. Nick had seen how that route could dull the pain without truly healing it, and he wanted something different for himself. Like many, he tried to manage in ways that offered temporary escape but no real relief. Though he didn’t come from a health and wellness background - as is true for many of his comrades - he was open to learning new ways to heal. Through a veteran organization, he discovered a rock climbing gym where fellow heroes met weekly. Surrounded by people who understood his struggles because they’d lived them too, healing felt possible for the first time. That moment sparked a new direction that led Nick to study health promotion at CSU, where he gained the tools to bring the kind of positive results he experienced to others. It became the foundation for the community he would later buildone grounded in health, movement, and shared strength - a community that continues to change lives every day.
Health4Heroes members, families, and supporters ran a 5K with American flags—building community, fitness, and motivation to push their limits.
Health4Heroes, Windsor Chapter members conquering a summit & celebrating their journey. H4H empowers members to take on challenges & achieve personal growth.
One of the many lives changed through Health4Heroes is that of Aaron Ellingson, a Navy veteran whose story reflects the heart of the organization’s mission. Aaron first connected with Health4Heroes in 2023, initially as a member searching for support and understanding. What started as curiosity soon became something more - a sense of belonging he hadn’t realized he was missing. He began volunteering, showing up not just for himself but for others walking similar paths. Before long, he stepped into leadership as operations lead and now serves as programs manager. Like Nick, Aaron brings his own experience to every conversation and every event. He speaks from understanding, from doing the hard work of his own healing. His story is a testament to how personal recovery can lead to purpose and open the door to restoration for others.
promises real change in return. A doctor-facilitated lab panel and body scan mark the starting line. Participants work with personal trainers, receive nutrition coaching, and take part in health and wellness education that helps them rebuild strength and balance from the inside out. It’s not easy, and it’s not instant, but it works. By the end, participants find themselves sleeping better, making healthy eating choices, improving stress management, and experiencing the pride that comes with taking command of their own health.
“Empowering veterans and first responders to take command of their health.”
What began as Nick’s personal pursuit of healing has grown into a mission shared by others who’ve walked similar paths. The Health4Heroes team, made up of veterans, first responders, and family members, knows that true recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. Together, they’ve built a network of community partners that make health and wellness more accessible: gyms, yoga studios, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and other providers who open their doors to heroes ready to take that first step. Each connection made is another way Health4Heroes turns understanding into action.
At the core of Health4Heroes’ mission is Take Command! , a 90-day lifestyle transformation program that asks heroes to put in the work and
The impact of programs like Take Command! shows up in countless ways, but it’s through personal stories that Health4Heroes’ purpose truly comes to life. Aaron met a fellow veteran struggling with vertigo - something he understands firsthand through his own battle with Meniere’s disease. He shared what had helped him manage his symptoms and connected her with resources through Health4Heroes. That moment reminded him why this work matters: healing often begins with one person reaching out to another who understands. While Health4Heroes continues to change lives across Northern Colorado, one of its biggest challenges remains reaching the veterans, first responders, and family members who haven’t yet heard about the organization. For every hero who’s found connection and healing through this community, there are many more still carrying their pain alone. Health4Heroes is determined to reach them to show that hope and help are closer than they think.
To help facilitate this expanded reach, Health4Heroes is raising funds for a mobile unit that will bring their programs and events directly to veterans, first responders, and families across the region. Going mobile means meeting people who might never walk through a gym door, creating visibility, and expanding partnerships with other community organizations. It will also lower overhead costs so more resources can go toward programs, events, and activities. Every donation moves them closer to rolling out this next chaptera visible symbol of connection and care, traveling wherever hope is needed most.

CELEBRATING CARRIE’S CAUSE
A FAMILY KEEPS A BELOVED HOLIDAY TRADITION ALIVE
ARTICLE BY DANA OLSON
What began as an affinity for poinsettias turned into an outreach that spans multiple states and makes an immeasurable impact on the hearts of many.
(L-R) Taylor & Ashley Accardi, Todd & Lisa Maul, Brianna Brienza, Austin Maul, Alex Maul. (Todd’s grandkids) Kida Yalacki, Blaize, Ryke, Jaxsun & Lexie Maul.
Todd Maul met his second wife, Carrie, in 2006 after Thanksgiving. While waiting for her to get ready for their first date, he noticed several small plants of the same variety scattered throughout her apartment. Upon his inquiry, she informed him that they were poinsettias, and much to his surprise, they existed outside of the holiday season - at least for Carrie, they did.
After marrying in 2007, Carrie and Todd found themselves with extra time on their hands one holiday season while Todd took a year off from his career. With a heart for the elderly, Carrie located a local low-income nursing home and decided to share her passion for poinsettias with its residents, scouring numerous stores for the perfect poinsettias. Enlisting the help of Todd and his three sons, she furnished them with Santa hats and set out to deliver 80 poinsettias to the unsuspecting, soonto-be delighted residents. The boys were less than thrilled, but upon discovering that their time would count toward volunteer requirements at their school, they quickly changed their opinion, happily signing on to do the same the following year.
By the third year, Carrie had become ill with kidney cancer and was unable to fulfill her mission. Todd’s middle son, Andy, chose to continue the tradition on his own, giving it the name “Carrie’s Cause.” Sadly, Carrie lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Andy gave life to the poinsettia project by suggesting they start a charity to carry on the joy-giving tradition.
To this day, Carrie’s memory and legacy live through her namesake cause, while thousands of poinsettias are personally delivered to the residents of numerous nursing homes in several states. Through this tradition, Todd and his growing family spread abundant joy while embracing the holiday’s deeper meaning. Todd is grateful to his partners in the John Elway Dealership Group for standing beside him each year with both volunteers and financial support for Carrie’s Cause.
“The thing about this charity is it’s joy - it spreads joy.”
—TODD MAUL

Chic Holiday Moments with The Wardrobe Edit

This holiday, personal stylist, Regan Heinrichs recommends leaning into the season’s rich jewel tones with a monochromatic look that’s modern yet timeless. She models this plum satin high-neck top paired with wide-leg trousers that offer sophistication and day-tonight versatility.
Regan knows that holiday dressing is more than choosing an outfit - it’s about the little details that make a statement. Bold animal-print heels instantly add personality and edge, while polished pumps or classic styles lend sophistication. Each choice of footwear sets the tone, capturing the mood before the celebration even begins.
This flirty A-line dress is recommended by Regan for its comfortable yet chic silhouette and soft shimmer that catches the light. Modeled here by Laura Rue, the high neckline adds sophistication to the playful shape and deep maroon color. There’s even a statement bow at the back - a detail that adds charm to this effortlessly festive look. Hair: Corlea Mate; Makeup: Mariah Gallegos.

Creating Unforgettable Experiences with Loved Ones
Vacationsfranchisee.
From tech support to director and now proud owner of her own travel agency, Melissa Rarick has built a career centered on service, leadership, and adventure. Her love for travel fuels her passion for creating memorable experiences for clients. Outside of work, she enjoys family time and giving back to her community. To book travel: 970-502-1570 or mrarick@ mrarick@dreamvacations.com
Holiday travel holds a unique appeal, even when it is often busier than other times of the year. Melissa Rarick of Dream Vacations notes that more travelers are choosing to invest in experiences over things. Many of her clients find that sharing a meal or a holiday tradition in a new place creates memories that last far longer than any wrapped gift. Traveling during this season allows people to participate in customs in meaningful locations or with loved ones, reinforcing both cultural and personal bonds.
One of the greatest rewards of holiday travel, Rarick explains, is the opportunity to experience how other cultures celebrate. From bustling Christmas markets in Europe to a beachside New Year’s dinner in the tropics, these adventures create stories that families will talk about for years. Witnessing traditions different from one’s own adds layers of magic and wonder that make the season feel even more special.
Preparation is key to fully enjoying these experiences. According to Rarick, just as holiday gifts are purchased early, travelers should plan their trips well in advance. Booking flights, hotels, and special activities like sleigh rides or cooking classes ensures that once-in-a-lifetime experiences aren’t missed, as holiday bookings fill up quickly.
Holiday trips are both about exploring traditions abroad and creating new ones with loved ones. Rarick says that traveling during the holidays amplifies excitement, wonder, and festive cheer, making experiences more emotionally rewarding and memorable. For first-time international travelers, patience is essential. Crowds and delays are inevitable, but approaching them as part of the adventure allows travelers to focus on the deeper emotional significance of being together.
Beyond the destinations themselves, Rarick emphasizes that it is the shared moments with family, friends, or even strangers that turn ordinary experiences into cherished memories. Whether it is laughing over a meal, discovering new adventures, or simply being with loved ones, these are the facets of travel that create memories that last a lifetime.

Exploring the Art of Holiday DesignFrom Traditional to Modern Christmas with Nero Boutique Interiors
Styled for the Season
Timeless and traditional - a table setting that invites warmth and cheer.
ARTICLE BY LEAH VUKO PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY DIANDRA
Timeless and traditional - a table setting that invites warmth and cheer.
At Nero Boutique Interiors, the team believes holiday design is as personal as the memories it celebrates. Whether drawn to the nostalgia of a traditional Christmas or the refined simplicity of a modern one, each style tells a story of warmth and joy. For this feature, the designers explored both, contrasting the charm of classic holiday decor with the elegance of a modern approach.
Traditional Christmas décor is timeless and full of heart. Pops of red and plaid set the stage, while fur, velvet, and glass accents bring depth. Nero embraces mixed metals for a collected look that feels authentic and layered. The style celebrates sentimentality with berries, reindeer, Santa, and heirloom ornaments that tell a story. To complete the setting, evergreen trees and natural accents fill the home with texture. The result is abundant, nostalgic, and joyfully full.
Modern Christmas décor takes a quieter, more restrained approach. This look favors simplicity and scale with clean lines, limited color, and layered texture. For their modern interpretation, Nero leaned into a monochromatic palette with pops of brass, allowing form and material to shine. Greenery remains central but shifts in tone: flocked greenery and birch accents soften the palette and introduce warmth while keeping cohesion. With fewer materials and a restrained palette, the design feels elegant and deeply inviting.
“Both traditional and modern Christmas decor share the same purpose, to create spaces that welcome and inspire connection.”
- Leah Vuko
Both traditional and modern Christmas decor share the same purpose, to create spaces that welcome and inspire connection. Whether one loves the richness of the classics or the serenity of modern style, the key lies in designing with intention. Ultimately, Christmas isn’t about the decorations; it’s about the people we love and the feeling of home. Decor simply becomes an expression of warmth, inviting those we hold dear a little closer.

OnGrade Plumbing & Excavating Turns Everyday Work into Extraordinary Community Impact
ARTICLE BY DANA OLSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUKE VAN WYHE | GREEN CHILI MEDIA
The team at OnGrade is grateful for the chance to give back to their community.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO HOST A GIVEAWAY LIKE THIS, AND WHY A TANKLESS WATER HEATER?
It’s our way of giving back to the community. Something we do every day - installing water heaters - could make someone’s entire year.
Randy’s and Angela’s story resonated with us; they’re veterans, and we’re moved by Angela’s strength through - and recovery from - a critical health ordeal.
The tankless water heater offers lasting performance and endless hot water, whereas a tank heater is limited in both supply and lifespan.
HOW DID IT FEEL TO SURPRISE THE WINNERS, AND WHAT DO YOU HOPE THIS GESTURE COMMUNICATES ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
As the cross on our logo communicates, this business was a gift from God; He blesses us so we can bless others. It doesn’t cost anything to do something good or help someonejust a little bit of time. We’re excited for them to be excited.
Randy and Angela Isaac were thrilled to be the recipients of the tankless water heater and are grateful for the changes this addition has brought to their home.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO ENTER ONGRADE’S GIVEAWAY, AND HOW DID YOU REACT WHEN YOU FOUND OUT YOU’D WON?
We entered because our water heater is failing and provides a limited supply of hot water. In the 10 years of owning our home, we’ve never had it serviced, nor can we find anyone to service it. We felt beyond blessed to have won the tankless water heater.
WHAT’S BEEN THE BEST PART OF HAVING YOUR NEW TANKLESS WATER HEATER INSTALLED?
We can finally take back-to-back showers without running out of hot water! And because the tankless water heater was installed in the crawlspace, the old water heater closet can now be converted to a storage space.

HOLIDAY SPENDING Made Smart
HOW TO MAKE “THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR” GENTLER ON YOUR WALLET
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON
The holiday season can be a fun time filled with family get-togethers, festive decorations, cookie baking and other merry moments.
It can also be a spendy time of year, especially when it comes to gift-giving.
If you are hoping to make this holiday season more budget-friendly than in years past, the following tips may help:
TIP 1:
HAVE AN HONEST TALK WITH YOUR KIDS
Your kids’ wish lists might be longer than the Declaration of Independence, but take heed. According to Whyzz, research has found that what kids really want for the holidays are enjoyable family traditions, relaxing days with people who love them, and a few gifts.
Interestingly, research also shows that kids have pretty reasonable expectations on how many gifts they will receive, as well as how much money will be spent on them.
With this in mind, before you start your holiday shopping, Whyzz advises sitting down with your kids and letting them know how much you have to spend on gifts this year. Be upfront about what they can expect, and encourage each child to suggest one larger gift or perhaps a few smaller ones that will fit into your budget.
TIP 2:
FIND CREATIVE WAYS TO TRIM THE HOLIDAY BUDGET
Buying presents for lots of friends and family members can really add up. To trim back your spending, Nerd Wallet suggests that people draw names to help lower the number of gifts you’ll purchase, and/or proposing a budget-friendly price limit for each person.
Other ways to pare back your holiday spending include asking family to come visit this season, rather than you booking costly airline trips and paying for hotels; or choosing just one seasonal play, performance, carnival or other event to attend, rather than several.
You can also challenge your kids to come up with ideas for inexpensive and fun things to do as a family. You might
find that your child’s suggestion of filling travel mugs with cocoa and heading out in the car to admire the many amazing holiday displays is a fun and memorable experience.
TIP 3:
ENCOURAGE GIFT RECIPIENTS TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY TRULY WANT OR NEED
Another way to make your holiday spending smarter than ever this year is to purchase gifts that your loved ones truly need. At times, this might involve thinking outside of the gift box a bit, and that’s okay.
Ask each person on your list for ideas, and let them know it’s okay if it’s not a “traditional” gift. For instance, maybe your aunt would love it if you paid for her Netflix subscription for a couple of months, your college-aged nephew could really use a gift card to Amazon or Target, and your grandpa would really be thrilled if you took him out to lunch once the busy holidays are over.
TIP 4:
TRY TO AVOID IMPULSE SPENDING ON “DEALS”
Yes, Black Friday typically features amazing deals on a wide selection of items. But unless you are really sure that one of your gift recipients wants that mega-marked-down item, try to resist succumbing to the temptation of these sales. Buying something just because it’s a terrific price is a sure way to bust that newly-trimmed down budget, and you might end up with gifts that were a great price, but not really useful to anyone on your list.
Here’s to a jolly holiday season filled with special moments, and smart spending!
A luscious holiday cocktail with warming spices, rich texture, and a beautiful cinnamon garnish.
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 oz dark or spiced rum
• 3/4 oz cinnamon simple syrup
• 1 oz heavy cream
• 1 whole egg
• Dash of ground nutmeg
• Dash of vanilla extract
Garnish: cinnamon stick and a light dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon
Make Cinnamon Simple Syrup:
Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, and 2 cinnamon sticks in a saucepan. Simmer for 10 mins, let cool, and strain. Store in the fridge.
Add rum, cinnamon syrup, cream, egg, vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg to a shaker. Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to emulsify the egg. Strain into a coupe or stemmed glass like the one in your photo. Top with a cinnamon stick across the rim and a dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon. Optional: Add 1/2 oz chilled espresso for a coffee kick.
FESTIVE CRANBERRY GIN FIZZ
A bright, elegant cocktail with a foamy top and a hint of holiday spirit.
INSTRUCTIONS:
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 oz gin
• 1 oz cranberry juice
• 3/4 oz lemon juice
• 1/2 oz simple syrup
• 1 egg white
Optional: splash of sparkling water or club soda
Garnish: fresh rosemary or thyme sprig
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a cocktail shaker, combine gin, cranberry juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds to create the frothy top. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass to get that smooth, foamy top. Add a small splash of sparkling water if you’d like a bit of fizz. Gently place a sprig of rosemary or thyme on top of the foam.
Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply treating yourself, these holiday drinks are guaranteed to bring a little extra cheer to your cup.
