Exploring What is in Your Own Backyard For the last several months I have had the privilege of exploring a town that as a little girl, I knew quite well. Windsor has grown so much, and I have really enjoyed getting reacquainted with the wonderful people and businesses in this community. From enjoying food at the many amazing local restaurants to the beverages at the coffee houses, to the shopping scene gathering flowers, plants, and clothes, to the salons and so much more. Windsor really has everything you need, but what makes this community so wonderful is you, the people. Many owners and their employees now know me personally, and it thrills me to no end to be greeted with "How are you today, Misty?" So, I want to personally say Thank You for the wonderful hospitality and for welcoming me back to this community! As we enter the month of April, we approach warmer weather, springtime, the budding of flowers, and a time to bloom. New life begins to awaken, and the winter hibernation sparks a desire to explore our world and enjoy our time outdoors. The real story is you don't have to go far to explore exactly what is in your backyard. I encourage you to check out what Windsor has to offer before heading out of town. There is a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a restaurant with a great patio, a walk around the Windsor Lake, the Poudre Trail to take in the surrounding scenery on bike or foot, or get in a round of golf at the local courses—there really is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore the great things that our town and Colorado have to offer. We encourage you to get outside, enjoy the spring air, get involved in community events, volunteer, and explore! Here is to a happy spring full of adventure and new becoming's.

Adding Depth
SpellBinders THE LOST ART OF STORY TELLING ARTICLE BY DESIREE GUSTAFSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIANDRA BROOKS
Storytelling is a tradition, one that is usually passed down through the generations from elder to youth. The art of this tradition has helped children develop listening skills, improve their reading comprehension, and encourage them to engage their imagination to visualize the story in their heads. It creates a connection, stimulates community, and fosters awareness of values and virtues. It is not only a beneficial exercise for our youth; it also creates a bridge for strong and caring relationships between older adults and younger generations. Spellbinders, a volunteer non-profit organization is aimed at keeping the art of storytelling and that connection alive. Engaging the youth and creating lasting effects that ripple through the lives of the storytellers and the children alike. There is something almost magical about watching the eyes of a child light up in enthusiasm while their imagination paints a picture for them. It is equally as rewarding for the storytellers themselves, offering connection, improving memory, and honoring them as guardians of wisdom and keepers of the story. Spellbinder Barb Wintermute recalls that connection and community offering her peace and light in a dark time. “It shines such a bright light into the lives of everyone involved, and the kids don’t know it impacts us just as much.”

Imagination Brought to Life
“It shines such a bright light into the lives of everyone involved, and the kids don’t know it impacts us just as much.”
Storytelling Creating Connections
Witnessing the spellbinders in action is truly inspiring. As reading to our youth has gone by the wayside, in favor of shows and touchscreens; the storytellers offer a gift that encourages active investment into the art of listening. In a world of instant gratification, they are given an opportunity to delay that and let the story unfold. To be stimulated in a different way, to lengthen their attention span over the course of the year and help them learn that good things take time. The average attention span of a 2nd grader used to be 18-20 min, it is now down to just 80 seconds, storytelling aims to help bridge that gap. Skyview teachers view the storytellers as key in helping students see the benefits of imagining a story in your mind and realizing your imagination has a huge impact on your life and your views. They even view it as restful for some kids that may struggle to read, bringing them a chance to sit back and imagine the story instead of focusing on the words individually! The teachers have become advocates in bringing the storytellers into the classroom and they have witnessed firsthand how large the ripple goes. CONTINUED >

For the Storytellers themselves, it is something they look forward to every month. “I have been in spellbinders for 10 years. I used to be a teacher. And I get to walk into their classrooms with a story that I got to pick, one that teaches a lesson and encourages thought. We go generally every month and at the end of the year, I always ask “what stories do you think I can tell next year, and they always remember every story. The kids remember the stories. They didn’t look at a written word, they heard it once, and still, it’s in their heads.” Says storyteller Diane Campbell. To reach another through the art of storytelling provides a meaningful connection built on respect and admiration. The lasting impressions create a ripple of impact that goes beyond the classroom. The Spellbinders are always welcoming new volunteers to become involved with the program and help them build a community that brings joy and light when it is needed most! If you feel the call, you can become involved at Spellbinders.org!

A Remarkable
E xper ience Await s Finding Adventure with Chris Goering
ARTICLE BY DESIREE GUSTAFSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHAT COATS & CHRIS GOERING Adventure, by definition, is an unusual and exciting or daring experience or activity. Seeking adventure can broaden our horizons; and help us push past fear to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Adventure comes in all shapes and sizes and is unique to everyone. For Chris Goering, being outdoors and exploring is a passion that offers him discovery, introspection, and growth. Having hiked just over 20 of Colorado’s 14,000ft peaks (14ers), Chris knows that getting out of his comfort zone helps him learn and see things through a different lens. Born in Kansas, his parents moved here when Chris was just 3 years old. Growing up Chris had bold and adventuresome parents that imprinted that same spirit into him. His mother was an archeologist and traveled all over the world from Russia to Siberia, Japan, and New Zealand. She has been to almost 38 different countries, living in native areas with host families, and meeting people from all over the world. “My mom didn’t have as many mountain adventures, but she was embracing Russian culture and seeing so many amazing parts of the world. She instilled that sense of wonder and a quest for seeking more in me. She was always so well put together and dressed just right but you would get into her car and there were dusty boots and a hat. When you look at the value of parents, they both influenced me heavily to not

conform to anyone else’s expectation, to be adventurous, to try new things, to experiment, and you might find something that you are good at and that you love. I took a lot of cues from my parents for my entire life, just both amazing humans” he stated. Chris’ love for the outdoors started back in the 1970s with cub scouts and then grew after that, in boy scouts. He attributes this love to the active pack leaders and parents that strived to make sure every boy in the organization had a great time and learned skills that would be transferable in life. “It was so important to have really committed parents of every scout to be active in the outside adventures or the planning and organization of them. So that is what really started my love for the outdoors and adventure” shared Chris. His dad had a bigger influence on his outdoor experiences from a young age; being involved in his scouting years and encouraging him to always keep exploring and asking questions. During these years, his dad built the foundation which would carry him into his adventurous future. The 14ers really started for Chris around 2017, when he found that he really enjoyed exploring more than he did just another bike ride or organized sport. It was a shift for him that offered a sense of peace without the scheduling or flat tires and traffic. Working his job as a Medical Claims Examiner is also where

Chris met his hiking buddy. “I walked by his desk, and he has this huge map of RMNP (Rocky Mountain National Park) in his cubical and I knew then we would be great friends.” This friendship fueled Chris’ drive to hike, having someone close to his age with a similar upbringing helped ignite his motivation to do more. They communicate at work and plan things daily, from a spur-of-the-moment hike the next day to organizing as far out as August. Overnight camping has become part of their routine for longer hikes that are further away. Driving out the night before and reaching their destination makes the next day easier. Helping them be well rested, with a good feel for the mountain, and ready to begin their journey. For Chris, every mountain has a different story, vibe, and experience. He likes to take time to reflect on his adventures, processing what’s happened in the last month or the last year and take stock in what he has learned and what he wants to implement going forward. “It is always about more for me. What I gain from it emotionally is so important, that I can bring that perspective back into my regular life and approach my job or a conflict differently than maybe the last Friday when I left. It is very much like reading a good book for some people. It is an exercise in humility and deeper thinking. I think you must have such high respect for the mountain, because the

mountain is almost like a spiritual presence. Some people find it in church or with their faith or family and the mountain is almost a living entity and she will decide the outcome. I enjoy being able to climb a big mountain with respect and knowing I am worthy of the summit when I reach it” shares Chris. His favorite mountain however is Longs Peak, which he has hiked several times, including his birthday and at night on the 4th of July in the moonlight! “That mountain is right there, every day staring at us, and I can look up and say, “I have been to the top of that mountain, I’ve taken a nap on top of that mountain, I have drank a beer on top of that mountain” shares Chris. This spirit of adventure and connection is something he pushes with his daughters as well; to go outside of their comfort zone, to try new things, and live a life that is all their own. important to him, it has never been a goal to summit all of them, but what he gains from each 14er is so much more than just the hike. He is given a renewed vision of himself and perspective of life. Chris has paved his own

IOME - Exploring Self Care Disrupting The Traditional Mental Health Scene ARTICLE BY DESIREE GUSTAFSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CANDACE LOSTROH @INTHEWILDANDWONDER
The IOME Team
22
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | ARTS + CULTURE
IOME (pronounced I-Owe-Me) began as something that founder Becky Lauridsen needed in her life at a time when she hit burnout in her career. This concept of guilt free self-care came about because of her own healing journey. She had completed her master's in 2013 and landed what she thought was her dream job working full time in a group counseling setting. Just 3 short years later she was completely burnt out; so much so that she quit her job and let her license expire with no intention of staying in the field. During this hiatus, she began focusing on her own mental health and addressing her own self-care. In her self-explorations, she began to heal both internally and externally and found this incorporated so much more than what is available to clients in traditional therapy settings. This discovery re-ignited her passion for mental health and her own healing journey prompted her to want to do things differently. As a sort of motto for IOME, they lovingly say that they are disrupting the traditional mental health scene because they feel like it’s broken. Their approach to mental health is preventative, which is pioneering a new path to offer clients an authentic approach to their mental health with accountability and a whole-body healing mindset. Since its creation about 5 years ago, Becky and the amazing IOME staff have become innovators in opening new doors based on the needs that they know are out there and that clients are searching for. One of the biggest values at the center of their establishment is authenticity. Everyone has good and bad days, and they bring a “what you see is what you get” approach to that. This encourages authenticity and gives their clients permission to be seen and to feel heard. “We want to make therapy very relatable because we don’t have everything figured out, no one does. So just giving people a space
to feel like it is okay to be seen and heard and practicing what we preach gives us a genuine space to help others” shares Becky. Their program is different because outside of the therapy, they offer a holistic approach that incorporates accountability and authenticity at its core. Becky and her staff take a lot of pride in creating a community for their clients; so that when they walk through the door, they feel welcomed and comfortable. Even the design of their space incorporates the environment they wanted to embody. Focusing on the whole body is a huge part of their practice, offering breathwork and even infrared sauna into their sessions. This allows a client to come in for a traditional talk therapy session and then sit in the sauna afterward; literally sweating out the toxins while pondering the purpose they worked on in that session. They know the physical support is just as important as the mental support because trauma is also stored in the body and needs physical release as well. They have a yoga certified therapist and in house massage; offering a way to release toxins through those modalities as well. They want to meet people where they need, offering walk and talks or hikes if a client is needing that grounding. Their approaches are individualized for each client’s needs and healing. Becky shares “We are here to help them get the most out of their sessions We want to hold them accountable to whatever it is that they need, want, or desire in order to find the best way to help them.” It is never too late to get therapy or support, and as IOME is modeled towards a preventative approach, they want to target clients that are probably doing “fine” but have maybe lost themselves a little bit and they just don’t have the zest or the enjoyment that they once had. They want to be able to support clients in a way that prevents burnout and breakdowns.
“Their approach to mental health is preventative, which is pioneering a new path to offer clients an authentic approach to their mental health with accountability and a whole-body healing mindset.”

The legacy IOME hopes to leave is twofold. They believe in growth for themselves both personally and professionally, not only to model the “practice what you preach” approach but because there are so many more people out there that need the quality mental health and mental wellness services they are providing. That’s the long-term legacy they see and of course, there is the legacy that affects them as individuals as well as their families directly. They want to set good examples for their children and spouses.
To model that authenticity and share the good and the bad. To share the journey and to let them know that things take work and bravery and to share what boundaries and a healthy balance look like. The individual must come first, and IOME offers a service unlike any other to support what their clients are needing. Everyone’s healing journey is different and IOME allows you the opportunity to create the best possible outcome for yours.
“We want to make therapy very relatable because we don’t have everything figured out, no one does. So just giving people a space to feel like it is okay to be seen and heard and practicing what we preach gives us a genuine space to help others” L E F T: O w n e r B e c k y L a u r i d s e n

Changing Perspectives & Exploring New Fields Dr. Tiffany Wall
A Dive Into The Origins Of New Beginnings Chiropractic With Dr. Tiffany Wall ARTICLE BY DESIREE GUSTAFSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTOPHER LINDSAY PHOTOGRAPHY | @KRISTOPHER.LINDSAY.PHOTOGRAPHY
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
Focused on improving your health to reduce the risk of pain and illness before it happens. New Beginnings Chiropractic is here to help people achieve their health and wellness goals. For those in pain, chiropractic offers a natural way to not only find relief but also to correct the problem and keep it from happening again. We sat down to learn a little bit more about Dr. Tiffany Wall and New Beginnings! Whether your needs are preventative or more directly urgent, New Beginnings has the approach and means to meet you where you need it most!
WHAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR JOURNEY TO BE A CHIROPRACTOR? WAS IT SOMETHING YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO DO YOUR WHOLE LIFE OR WAS THERE AN EVENT OR EXPERIENCE THAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON THAT PATH? There were two different experiences that led me to pursue chiropractic. When I was in elementary school, I attended a health and science fair for young girls to help promote more females in those professions. I saw a chiropractor and was instantly intrigued. A few years later when I was 13 and a freshman in high school, I started struggling with low back pain while playing sports. After months of physical therapy and seeing an orthopedic specialist who suggested exploratory surgery, we had lost hope. The pain was so severe I struggled to walk the halls at school and was sure I would have to quit volleyball. My coach encouraged me to see her chiropractor several towns over because there wasn’t a chiropractor in my hometown. It was the first time I felt any relief. I felt all hope return. I had no idea what the chiropractor had done, but I knew I wanted to do that. I wanted to give others the same hope for healing that he had given to me.
WHAT ARE SOME MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC THAT YOU WISH PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD? Our job is not to fix you or take away your pain! Your body does the healing, the chiropractic adjustment improves structure, function, and your body’s nervous system communication. You're designed to be self-healing and self-regulating. If we remove interference in that process, we see amazing results!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A CHIROPRACTOR? Seeing entire families’ lives change! When an infant’s health improves, or a toddler sleeps through the night for the first time, or a dad can throw a ball with his kids again or grandparents can get down on the floor and play with their little ones; everyone benefits and it is the best feeling in the world to watch!
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR OWN PRACTICE AND HOW DID YOUR VISION FOR THAT TAKE SHAPE? I always wanted to have the flexibility to set my hours and take off when my family needed me. It was what I wanted from the start, so I minored in business during my undergrad before chiropractic school. I realized shortly after opening that working 5 days a week wasn’t how I wanted to run things and it’s a physically demanding job, so I wanted to make sure I didn’t get injured or burnt out. It keeps me mentally and physically loving my work.
HOW HAS BEING A CHIROPRACTOR IMPACTED YOUR LIFE, HEALTH, RELATIONSHIPS, OR CHANGED THINGS FOR YOU? Because of the amount of education required to become a chiropractor, continuing education, and extra courses required for specialty training, I have learned so much about health and the human body, and the impacts it has on every aspect of life. As a chiropractor, I address illness and wellness from a natural mindset and holistic approach, which is usually a little different from most mainstream approaches. This, of course, impacts my family at home. From teaching my daughters ways to support their growing bodies and choices my husband and I make for our family that will encourage overall health and longevity, the knowledge that I have gained through being a chiropractor will change the lives and health of my family for generations.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATORS, OR PEOPLE THAT INFLUENCED YOUR LIFE IN A POSITIVE WAY? I have been blessed to have so many people influence my life in great ways. I have had supportive friends and family in every stage of my journey. I can’t list them all, but I am so grateful for the people in my life over the years! I have a lot of things that keep me motivated when it comes to chiropractic. One conversation that sticks out in my mind the most is when a woman shared with me that if she would have known, decades ago, to get her colicky child checked by a pediatric chiropractor, their family dynamic would have been so different and possibly could have saved her marriage. It kills me when I hear people say that about their pregnancy, kid’s health, or any symptom they thought they just had to live with forever. That keeps me motivated to tell the next person how chiropractic can help because I want to live in a world where no one ever has to say again, “I wish I would have known.” CONTINUED >

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN GOALS AS A PRACTICE, OR CORE PRINCIPLES THAT YOU BELIEVE MAKE YOU DIFFERENT? Our main goal is to help restore hope to the patients who walk in the door. Hope for healing; that their body is capable of feeling and functioning better! Many of us view our bodies as failures or broken, but our bodies are capable of incredible things if we just get out of their way.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO ANYONE WANTING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN CHIROPRACTIC? Shadow as many offices and chiropractors as you can. You will pick up on different techniques and learn what you like or even don’t like about each place. Research schools but more importantly, find seminars and mentors outside schools to learn from! And come grab lunch with me and ask me a million questions, I know many colleagues feel the same way!
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON STRETCHES OR TECHNIQUES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO THE EVERYDAY PERSON, TO HELP KEEP THEM LIMBER OR AVOID INJURIES? We all tend to sit way too much and slouch often. Most of us could benefit from a few basic stretches. Open up hips with psoas and quad stretches. Lean through a door frame with arms on either side of it to stretch pec muscles. Relax over a foam roller on your back getting into extension in your spine. These are some easy basic movements to incorporate daily. New Beginnings Chiropractic has a YouTube channel with easy at-home stretches for different areas of your body.
HOW HAS HAVING YOUR OWN PRACTICE CHANGED YOUR VIEW ON YOUR FIELD? There are so many different techniques and specialties and types of businesses within chiropractic. I wanted New Beginnings Chiropractic to be very authentic and fun. Every chiropractic clinic is different and there is immense beauty in that. When New Beginnings isn’t a good fit for one person, the next office might be the exact style or technique they need.
WAS THERE ANY INSPIRATION BEHIND THE DESIGN OF YOUR PRACTICE AND SPACE? I wanted New Beginnings Chiropractic to be very family-friendly. We serve families with young children so having our office be safe and comfortable for kids to hang out and play while parents are getting checked or to keep them happy and occupied while the child is getting checked was very important to me. I didn’t want parents to have to find childcare or wait for the other parent to be available for them to get the care they needed! When I was building out New Beginnings Chiropractic, I got down on my knees and looked around the space from a small child’s point of view to see what they would see, how it felt, where things were inviting, etc.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED AND FROM WHOM? “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” My amazingly talented Acupuncturist, Montana Glenn Lac, DOM told me this while I was pregnant with my second baby. Growing a business and a family, I was learning to take care of myself in the process and how to not do everything myself, even if I was capable of the task.
