SUMMERTIME IS A MAGICAL SEASON. The kids are out of school, the sunshine seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood: sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming for as long as humanly possible. We also celebrate July 4th, host backyard parties for our friends and family and, if we’re lucky, take a scenic trip! In this issue of Westport Lifestyle, we want to remind you why summer is the season of opportunity. Maybe it’s time to take up a new summer hobby! If you’re interested in exploring a new passion in our beach town, check out the sailing feature on page 28. Looking for an adventure without a boat rental fee attached? Well, when’s the last time you played tourist in your hometown? We invite you to use pages 24-26 as your guide to some quirky sites you may have not known about right here in Westport.

HOT SPOT

Hello, Patio! FABULOUS OUTDOOR DINING SPOTS

ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG ONE OF THE GREAT JOYS OF SUMMER IS EATING OUTSIDE. Food tastes better, drinks appear larger, and children’s whines dissipate though the filter of a vast environment. On June 14, 2010, Amendment #610 allowed Westport restauranteurs to scatter tables on their sidewalks and await throngs of outdoor diners. The most intriguing outdoor dining space was courtesy of nowclosed Acqua Ristorante. They eagerly roped off a few parking spots in Parker Harding, threw out a clutch of four-tops, and invited patrons to dine in a cloud of exhaust fumes. People came and ate and pretended they couldn’t extend their arm and touch the tailpipe of an idling SUV. Such was the appetite for dining al fresco. Nine years later, outdoor dining is a far more sophisticated enterprise, allowing us to experience our seaside enclave when it’s at its peak. Also, a few more cars are able to enjoy prime spaces in Parker Harding. Here are a few of our favorites:

Bar Taco patio.

BAR TACO WHERE: 20 Wilton Road, Westport Hey, guys - Bar Taco! Ever heard of it? I know, you’re rolling your eyes and thinking, “Uh, yeah. Everyone knows Bar Taco.” But we’re still including it because, well, it rocks. It’s beachy in a glamorous vacation way, not the sand-in-the-sunscreen/ where-are-my-kids kind of way. WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW: They have games like “Corn in the Hole” and “Smash Your Glass on a River Duck.” Oh, wait. The latter’s no longer a game. Glasses aren’t allowed on the railing for that reason. Also, they’ve teamed up with PureBarre and will be hosting a few weekend classes that will take place on the patio this summer. I have no idea what that will look like. But I imagine many will enjoy the view. WHAT YOU SHOULD ORDER: Guacamole with chips, Tuna Poke, Tacos with baja spicy tempurabattered cod or glazed pork belly with spicy arbol chili sauce, Charred Corn. WHAT YOU SHOULD DRINK: Fresh lime margarita or a fresh lime margarita. Or a fresh lime… you get the point. CONTINUED >

HOT SPOT

(CON TI N U ED)

RIVE BISTRO WHERE: 299 Riverside Avenue, Westport Smack-dab on Saugatuck River, Rive’s gracious atmosphere and menu is reminiscent of a Parisian bistro with plenty of windows for admiring the view. Rive has two outdoor spaces: a patio with clear plastic roll-downs for when the weather misbehaves and Adirondack chairs near the boardwalk for lingering with cocktails on warm evenings. WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW: Avoid the patio’s sunny spots mid-day unless you want to drown in a puddle of your own sweat. WHAT MAKES THIS PATIO UNIQUE: Excellent view of water-loving folk on boats, sculling or fishing off the boardwalk. Plus, you can pretend you’re on a narrow and unpopulated stretch of the Seine. OVERHEARD: Young son to his mother as he jumps from his chair, “Mom, take your time eating. I’m gonna go swim.” WHAT YOU SHOULD ORDER: Salmon Rillettes, Chopped Kale And Farro Salad, Moules Frites.

Rive Bistro deck and patio. (Photo: John Videler)

WHAT YOU SHOULD DRINK: White wine or champagne - the real stuff from Champagne, France.

Kawa Ni rooftop.

KAWA NI WHERE: 19A Bridge Square, Westport Many know about this tiny, hip Japanese gastropub with unpronounceable ingredients that are delicious. Few know about the patio upstairs, though. With communal tables and cardboard boxes, you’ll feel like you’re having a posh and exotic picnic on a private roof deck on the Upper West Side. WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW: Want hot sake? You’re out of luck. They only serve it cold because that’s how it’s served in Japan: heat changes the taste of this fermented rice drink. But it’s summer so you don’t want it hot anyway. OVERHEARD: “This is like an Asian lobster shack. On a roof. That doesn’t serve lobster.” WHAT YOU SHOULD ORDER: You shouldn’t. Ask the server to bring you whatever they want to and stop him/her when everyone is sated. WHAT YOU SHOULD DRINK: Cold sake, Sapporo lager, Yuzu bomb (Yuzu, sake, beer). Or the Big Fat Old Fashioned (smoked bone marrow fat washed bourbon, Curacoa, sugar, bitters) because it’s a great conversation starter. 20

FORGET THE MINUTE MAN. Actually, don’t. The Minute Man is an important Westport landmark. But if friends and family come calling this summer and want to learn something while on vacation (!), we’ve found some historical sites that are educational and entertaining.

Grand entrance.

One of several living rooms.

GOLDEN SHADOWS Location: Former residence of Evelyn and Walter Langer What it commemorates: The

husband-and-wife

team

behind

White

Shoulders, America’s most popular perfume at the time, built this home in the mid-1950s while snapping up over 20 acres of adjacent land. This striking mansion combines an eclectic blend of Hollywood glamour and European sophistication… at least, that was the Langer’s goal. The result is a delightfully tacky vestige of mid-century style, a nonsensical network of rooms in Crayon colors that is part Barbie Dreamhouse, part What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. (Their other scents were Menace and Gay Diversion. Yeah. It’s a timing thing.)

WESTPORT’S OFF-BEAT MONUMENTS

(CON TI N UED)

DISBROW TAVERN MEMORIAL Location: Intersection of Myrtle and Church Lanes What it commemorates: Almost 250 years ago President Washington drank something in a tavern that used to be here. Powerful stuff, that. Legend has it Washington threw one back with his “spymasters” at Disbrow’s while en route to Boston in 1775, though some contend Disbrow Tavern never existed. If you’re thirsty for more historical evidentiary relics, the lower hall of Christ & Holy Trinity houses what is believed to be the nail upon which our first President hitched his horse while sipping ale at Disbrow’s. If, in

Disbrow Tavern Memorial

fact, he did.

MACHAMUX BOULDER Location: 250 Greens Farms Road What it commemorates: Evidently

Chickens

named

this plot “The Beautiful Land.” While deeds around that time show

“Chickens”

was

the

nickname of a business-savvy native American, we at Westport Lifestyle would like to believe it was named by a squawk of voluble and appreciative poultry. Machamux Boulder

NIKE MISSILE RADAR SITE Location: 182 Bayberry Lane What it commemorates: During the Cold War, the US Army planted Nike Missile sites throughout the country to thwart a perceived direct threat from Soviet bombers. Nike was a “major caliber anti-aircraft rocket torpedo” (WestportCT.gov) intended to destroy B-17 bombers mid-flight, thereby diminishing potential damage to land and citizens. Despite residents’ protests the army built two in Westport, which today are Bedford Middle School and the Westport-Weston Health Department and the Westport Astrological Society (WAS). The health department housed the barracks, mess hall, and recreation rooms. WAS’s Newtonian Reflector telescope is housed in the old radar antenna tower. Max Schulman wrote a satirical account of the controversy surrounding the Nike site’s construction, Rally ‘Round the Flag, Boys!. The novel was the basis of a romantic comedy in 1958, filmed in Westport and starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. During filming they fell in love with our town. And the rest is history. 26

Going out to sea. 28

Westport Lifestyle | July 2019

HAVING GROWN UP IN A COASTAL TOWN, I’VE BEEN INFLUENCED BY THE AESTHETIC OF THE SEA AND THE LONG ISLAND SOUND SINCE I WAS A CHILD. But it wasn’t until now, as an adult, I decided to solidify my coastline credibility and learn to sail. I knew the basics, which is to say the difference between port and starboard and a few useful knots. Anything beyond that took me well outside my comfort zone. My real sailing education happened at Sound Sailing Center in Norwalk when I met Martin Van Breems. A true sailor’s sailor, he has been on the water his entire life. Martin has sailed alone across the Atlantic and made countless passages to the Caribbean. He received an award from the Coast Guard for rescuing mariners stranded at sea. He even invents and manufactures his own cutting edge, widely adopted sailing hardware. Few instructors have more knowledge and experience. After over 30 hours of lessons and confident in my newfound skills I decided to test my abilities. I convinced a handful of friends with boating experience ranging from some to none to join me for a long weekend of sailing. Our plan was to leave Norwalk Harbor on Friday afternoon, cross the sound to Northport on Huntington Bay, then sail out to Port Jefferson the following day. The weather was threatening and high waves were expected but fair winds and smooth seas do not make for better sailors. While we prepped the boat the landlubbers of the crew joked good-naturedly and popped the first beers of the day. My fellow sailors and I reviewed the charts and planned our course, conscious of the ominous sky and the nearby marina flags snapping in the wind. The tide was low, increasing our chances of hitting submerged rocks. They say there are three types of sailors: Those who are going to run aground, those who have run aground, and liars. We would have to be extra careful. Our first hint of danger came in the channel. Two fishermen returning to port eyed us incredulously as we sailed by them. By the time we passed the light at Greens Ledge the boat was climbing heavy, rolling swells and rushing down the other side to meet the next wave. The bow sent sea spray into the air as it cut through the water, drenching us all. The landlubbers stopped joking, exchanging the beers for lifejackets and anything solid they could hold on to.

DARK AND STORMY (CON TI N U ED) Our passage across the sound was

rough. The wind whipped the rain across the deck, stinging our cheeks. It was an exhilarating experience and a reminder that the few miles between Connecticut and Long Island are more than a bit of blue on the map. We felt the raw power of nature, harnessed it, tamed it and came out safely on the other side. That evening, seated together for drinks and dinner in a warm Northport tavern, we talked excitedly about our trip and relived the day’s voyage. We were euphoric in our shared experience and anxious to get back out onto the water. We stared into the maelstrom and passed through it to be rewarded with craft beer and shared apps. Everyone on board felt more confident the next day, and we spent our time talking and laughing as the miles faded away in our wake. One of Martin’s goals with Sound Sailing Center is introducing new people to the sport of sailing. Judging by the reaction of my shipmates, he’s won several new converts. While we were never more than twenty miles from home, something about being on the boat made us feel as if we’d traveled much further. Riding the wind and waves makes even a weekend trip feel like an adventure. By the way if our wives ask, it was smooth sailing the whole time. The Art and Effort of Selling a Bestseller MARKETING A BEACH READ IT’S A WELL-KNOWN FACT THAT A BESTSELLING BOOK SELLS ON ITS OWN MERIT. Also, it’s not true. Behind every bestselling book, including the two top-selling books in history, Bible (#1), Gone with the Wind (#2), is a major marketing machine.

personal contact. Further, she interviewed him for the foreword. Honestly, Mark should consider gold-plating it and wearing it as a necklace/ shield/talisman for the next year or so. Four years later, Emily published her first novel, You Knew Me When. She admits, “I was, effectively, a nobody in the literary world. I realized that I had to do something to set myself apart.” She wanted a synergetic partnership with an established company that would help propel her book onto different mediums. “I asked myself, what will my readers love?” Emily recalls, “And I came up with nail polish! [Zoya] made me 600 nail polish sets with three nail polishes each that were created and named for my characters in exchange

I knew I wa n t e d to d o some kind of l i f e st y l e / b e au t y c o l l a b o r at i o n w i t h e ac h n ov e l .”

for riding my publicity train.” With polish sets sold on Zoya’s website, giveaways at readings and included in mailings to editors, producers and bloggers, the novel partnership proved successful at promoting both book and beauty company. Refinery29.com wrote “We’ve seen celebrities, designers, and even hotels lend their names to nail polish, but until now, we’d never seen a mani inspired by a piece of literature.” “After that,” Emily states, “I knew I wanted to do some kind of lifestyle/beauty collaboration with each novel.” For Those Secrets We Keep she assembled a beach day IT Cosmetics pouch, and a Gerard Cosmetics lip gloss set for Some Women. For Pretty Revenge, Emily’s going back to nail polish. The glittery colors, like a fistful of shiny back-stabbing daggers, inspired by her female adversaries. Of interest, there are two ironies in her literary ecosystem. First, she spearheads beauty collaborations, yet she doesn’t wear make-up. She deigns to have her friend slather some on for photo-shoots but with a warning, “I want you to know I’m going to hate every minute.” Second, behind her friendly demeanor and naturally lovely facade lurks a sick criminal mind. Just kidding. She has no experiential predicate for her writing. All the themes of abandonment and vengeful decimation are born from her imagination, not her personal history. (I was kind of curious about that, so thought you’d want to know, too.) Of Emily, past-collaborator and Real Housewife Teresa Giudice sums her best, “All great things to say. She’s wonderful.” *based on a 2016 Georgetown University study 36

DERMAPLANING AT PRIMA SKINCARE 292 POST ROAD EAST “This is my favorite place for Dermaplaning around Westport. Dermaplaning is the treatment behind the super smooth skin you see on the red carpets, because the aesthetician removes dry skin and peach fuzz with a scalpel. I did it in NYC twice and it was the treatment I immediately sought once I moved to Westport. Even your makeup goes on completely differently after Dermaplaning, and with that, you won’t need much of it.” PrimaUltimateSkincare.com

It might not last as long as powder makeup, but it will make your skin glow and almost look like you woke up that way. And it’s moisturizing - this past winter here was really dry! My favorites are Supergoop Shimmershade SPF eyeshadows, RMS Lip2Cheek (love the shade Spell! Activated charcoal absorbs toxins in your body and is incredibly cleansing. It purifies skin inside out and improves digestion (hey, flatter stomach!). The Bowl is perfect as a summer breakfast before hitting the beach or an afternoon snack. Because it’s black and looks very cool, my boys always try to eat my bowl - not that they need to detox yet! (Beware though, it could detox any medication you are taking.)
