FOURTH ANNUAL WESTPORT DOG FESTIVAL The fourth annual Westport Dog Festival will once again feature a three-ring circus of activities including an obstacle course, goofy competitions, police K9 presentations and multiple demonstrations. All surrounded by more than 60 dog-related vendors, sponsors and food trucks. Expected attendance is more than 3,000 humans and 1,000 dogs for a great day in the park. MURALS OF SHIPS WENT TO DIE. It was no solace knowing the decor did to one’s eyes what the toothscraper would soon do to one’s mouth. But, readers, the past is simply that. You may know Drs. Masha Kogan and Virginia Romano of the Dental Center of Westport from their witty, hip and unapologetically feminine advertisements. Photographed around town in braw tulle skirts and flossy kicks, the two are overcoming the roughhewn reputations of their predecessors and modernizing our perception of dentistry. Full disclosure: My kids and I have been going to them for 13-plus years. I first chose them for their proximity to downtown shopping. I stayed with them because my children didn’t scream when they saw them, which is their goal: to make us love our trip to the dentist. The doctors in their waiting room 16

“We know no one wants to be here, so we want it to be like they’re walking into their living room,” Dr. Kogan says. Inviting and colorful, the waiting room is adorned with paintings by a local artist and a stack of fashion books sits on the coffee table. A menu of available drinks (tea, coffee, water) is near the door and are happily served by the front office staff. of their classes at NYU dental school and attend the top continuing education programs in the country, regardless of cost. They often exceed the Connecticut requirement of 25 hours of CE each year and focus primarily on cosmetic dentistry, full-mouth rehabilitation, implants and Invisalign. This enthusiasm extends to every member of their team. “We all sit around at lunch discussing periodontal disease. We’re nerds about dentistry,” Dr. Kogan says. During examinations, they consider the whole body, not just the mouth and all of its saliva-covered inhabitants. “What we oftentimes see inside the mouth gives us an indication of what else is happening with the body, such as evidence of acid reflux, B12 deficiency… and more,” Dr. Kogan says. These indications often lead to nutritional recommendations or referrals to other physicians. On the other side of the fun train is fighting with insurance companies. Drs. Kogan and Romano will shed blood for their patients’ insurance coverage. “We know what the patient requires,” Dr. Kogan says. If insurance won’t cover it, the patient still needs it. Proper treatment is sacred; they’ll go to extraordinary lengths to ensure their patients receive the correct care. Despite the expert care and sunny surroundings, fear and anxiety still haunt some patients. To be fair, jitters of this ilk are hardly unusual to the medical community. What is unusual is that these women offer their cellphone numbers, so patients can call them if they’re anxious, in pain or wake up at 3 a.m. and feel like chatting. Listen, no one can make a drill sound any sweeter than the shrill wail of Satan’s baby. But they can give you a toothbrush, a warm lemon-scented towel and a smile. And you’ll leave feeling happier, knowing you love your dentists and they love you right back.

The Champions Behind the 'Day of Champions' Putting the 'Fun' in Fundraiser

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SHOT HOOPS IN A TUTU, RAN THROUGH TIRES AND DUG YOUR HEELS IN FOR AN EPIC FOUR-WAY TUG-OF-WAR, ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE? Enter the Day of Champions. Scheduled for Sunday, May 19, this atypical fundraiser is a family field day created last year by a group of women who wanted to support a nonprofit called Experience Camps. Westport-based Experience Camps provides a week of free summer camp to children and teens around the country who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling. The camp was founded in 2009 with 27 campers in Maine. This summer, Experience Camps will provide life-changing summer programs to more than 750

Many campers go back every summer and say it’s the best week of the year. Chief Experience Officer Sara Deren hadn’t previously held a fundraiser in Westport, her hometown. But her friend Gery Grove, a nurse and a life-long sleep-away camper and counselor who lost her father at age 18, wanted to get involved.

As another life-long camper and professional camp consultant, Melissa was thrilled. “Camp was the most defining thing in my life, and I always wanted to do something with that passion,” Melissa says. They were lucky to find the perfect location, Camp Mahackeno, the day camp on the grounds of the Westport Weston YMCA. Then the pair of power moms reached out to women from different realms of their lives to form a committee.

“Everyone was excited,” Gery says. “It’s a great cause and a fun way to engage your kids in doing something for other kids.” Christina Langone, who used to work in finance, is now co-chairing the event along with Gery. Sara Robbin, a law professor and legal writing coach; and Cindy Reejhsinghani, a massage therapist; are in charge of planning the activities. Sara Holland, the beloved local youth sports coach, is also pitching in. With mixed-age events like sponge relays and a family obstacle course, Sara says “it

was so rewarding to see how into it everyone got. The team spirit blew us away.” Christina, who helped plan the events with Sara and Jennifer Katzner last year, adds: “Adults rarely have opportunities to let loose athletically with their children. How often do you get in there and really do an obstacle course with your 6-year-old?” Chrissy Toeplitz manages communications with the 20 team captains and 300 participants. In true color war spirit, teams are assigned a color and awarded points based on how well they “jazz up” their outfits. Teams must raise a minimum of $1,000 each to compete, though many raised more. Michelle Yanover captained “Laurie’s Legacy” to honor her mother, who she lost to cancer when she was 7 years old. Their team raised more than $25,000. Amy Lane, a former high school English teacher, directs the team of more than 30 event volunteers. She is also too familiar with grief. “I was in my early 30s when I lost my mom, but it’s still such a profound loss, and I had the tools and support to help cope. It’s so apparent the amount of extra support a child needs,” Amy says. Julie Kaufman and Rory Murray manage operations, which includes parking, food trucks, the DJ and childcare (provided free from Bambino). Rory’s participation is especially bittersweet. Her husband perished on 9/11 when her daughter was just 5 months old. Her daughter had benefitted from a camp similar to Experience Camps, and she was looking for a way to give back. The team relies on the support of Jeff Kimball, Experience Camp’s chief possibilities officer, also from Westport. “He is a nurturing soul, almost like a mom,” Gery says. Jeff raised his kids without his wife, who passed away when they were little. Melissa is in charge of sponsorship and partners and has leveraged her connections to tap into the generosity of local businesses. The team has also garnered some larger corporate sponsors. But even with all of this support, the first event last year felt like a gamble. “We thought people wouldn’t come because we are all so busy and programmed with sports, but they took it and ran with it. I mean, we had a man in a unicorn costume!” Gery says. “It started out like a camp day, foggy with drizzle, and by the end the sun was blazing. Everyone came dressed up, and it was this beautiful rainbow of colors. For three hours, every single person got to be a camper again.” “It worked so well because of the community of women who planned and ran the event, the participants who showed up, dressed up and got messy and the people who supported camp by donating,” Sara says. “I thought we were going to raise $20,000, but we ended up raising $145,000. That actually allows us to open up a brand-new camp, which we are doing this summer in Michigan.” Most parents strive to teach kids about giving back. We also seek to be present with our own kids, and it’s a home-run when we find activities the whole family can participate in together. This group of dedicated moms dreamed up a way to do all of that in one action-packed Day of Champions. Experience Camps is hoping to double the number of children they welcome to camp. She decided to utilize her free time and volunteer to help local nonprofits raise funds and awareness. “I helped with some local charity events and started working with a friend’s athleisure company, Bandier. We hosted several events at my home raising money for many organizations: Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Whip Pediatric Cancer and the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. In 2016, my step-father was diagnosed with lung cancer, so I became involved with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute as well. I also helped create a local event for Al Diguido’s Al’s Angels called Angel-ade. That’s the challenge of writing about someone who’s already written everything you want to write about.) Happily Eva After, like most lifestyle blogs, treads a thin wire between life and reality. For instance, those effortless moments of her laughing with her kids, Marlowe and Major? Not so effortless (if you’re a parent, you understand.) “A big misconception with blogging is that photogs follow you around—they don’t! We shoot for 60 minutes once a week, but a lot of prep goes in to block shooting to cover events/pics for the whole week,” Eva says. “There is way more planning involved with blogging than people imagine.” So viewers see her modeling dresses in her bedroom or enjoying quiet time with her family. What they don’t see is that the second after the camera snaps and the scene is over, she’s frantically staging another shoot or racing to a meeting. Unfortunately, these photos incite some viewers to mom-shame. If she’s at home, why does she need a nanny? Why can’t she take care of the kids herself? “I can’t do all the things a stay-at-home mom can do,” Eva shrugs. “(I try to) not be down on myself when readers judge because they aren’t aware of my limitations.” Further fuzzing the line is the unavoidable cyclicity of her business. The good thing about the blog, Eva says, is “everything you do can be a part of your business. The bad is, literally everything is work.” When the way you live is what you do for a living, it’s tough to discern where lifestyle ends and life begins, what should be private and what can be public.
