FEBRUARY—IT’S THE SHORTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR, BUT THERE’S DEFINITELY NO SHORTAGE OF EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING HERE IN WESTPORT. When thinking of ideas for our Arts + Makers issue, we were inspired by the talented local creatives who beautify our community with their work. Whether it’s local theater performances, the Westport arts scene or handmade goods from local artisans, we were inspired by the creative culture our town is bursting with. Some of our favorite arts-related things to experience include the Westport Country Playhouse, the Arts Center and the wonderful family-owned shops around town. If you’re on the hunt for a locally made Valentine’s Day gift, we recommend checking out Le Rouge – Handmade Chocolates by Aarti for some unique sweets your Valentine will always remember. With our own bustling creative scene—from jewelry makers and painters to musicians and actors—we hope you find inspiration in these pages and come to appreciate our unique perspective here in Westport. Consider this issue your guide to all things creative. See you around!

SUSIE’S PAINTING WESTPORT PINK ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG PHOTOGRAPHY MINDY BRIAR AND PROVIDED
TO CALL SUSIE BLUMENFELD, FOUNDER AND OWNER OF PINK HOUSE PRODUCTIONS, A PARTY PLANNER IS LIKE REQUESTING A FABERGE EGG SUNNY-SIDE UP: A BIT OF ENLIGHTENMENT IS REQUIRED. A PHP production goes way beyond “party,” practically coruscating in over-the-top everything, from enormous flower balls to piles of candy to crystal-encrusted sneakers. A quick perusal of her office, brimming with colorful faux leather samples for yarmulkes, hundreds of personalized water bottles, and jars of giant pixie sticks, belies the organization and attention to detail which she lavishes upon each of her—I’ll write it again but the word isn’t big enough—parties. Susie and her husband raised their three daughters in Westport and lived here for 26 years before moving to Fairfield. She “fell into” event planning 11 years ago, when her girls were at CMS and Staples. Pretty soon she was producing her signature blow-outs—and still is—almost every weekend, from Long Island to Boston. Each event (still not an adequate word) begins with a pink folder containing a timeline, a “Complete Event Planning Services Client Checklist,” Susie’s Word of Wisdom and a list of “To-Go” treat ideas. “We do everything,” she says. Her checklist attests to this: it begins with Venue Selection and ends with Miscellaneous: Bags for hotel guests. It may seem a daunting list, but she affirmed: “We make it [party planning] fun. My husband says, ‘Everyone wants to be in our family when the parties are over.’” The parties—weddings, birthdays, bar and bat mitzvahs—begin with a kick-off meeting, to bestow the pink folder and discuss ideas. Susie showed me a drawing a young girl had made of a rainbow, her aesthetic vision for her bat mitzvah. This rainbow served as the basis for the party design, eventually becoming an ombre logo and working its way into everything that could be rainbow-ed, including the lighting. The sides of the acrylic tables were rainbow, and rainbow-colored balloons festooned one of the walls. The party favors were gray sweatpants with the rainbow logo. “Now I’m obsessed with rainbows!” Susie grins. With infectious enthusiasm, she pulled out fabric samples and calligraphed wedding invitations with coordinating stamps. Then she plunked a large box of napkins from past parties on her desk. “There are millions in here,” she says, excitedly pulling out bright napkins with whimsical lettering. CONTINUED >

Printed on each was a logo or tagline or both. Taglines ran the gamut: “Barnes & Noah” for a young man who loved to read, “Best BASSmitzvah Ever!” for the Bass family. Once PHP created a party for a vegan girl who loved cows. Susie recalled thinking, “Cows? I’m into pretty.” And guess what? “I made them pretty!” She showed me a napkin with the girl’s name in metallic block lettering, a cow profile at the end. A charming logo any girl would love, cow lover or not. But the best part is “To-Go,” the end-of-the-event grab-whatyou-want no-portion-control extravagance of everything your mom begs you not to eat. Whether they create beach shacks filled with candy or a concession stand stuffed with baseballs and Big League chew, all is free for the taking. It’s the party guest’s equivalent of a Free Jewelry sign in the window of Tiffany’s. “I just know what people want. I don’t know how to explain it,” she shrugs. Then, assessing the controlled and colorful chaos of her office, she sits back. “I have to have a TV show. I could be funny on TV. My husband won’t be in it, but my kids would love it.” 18

A collection of handmade chocolates
Le Rouge founder and owner Aarti Khosla
/Aartisan Chocolates Aarti Khosla handed me a luminous slice of orange, perfectly dried in her shop’s kitchen, dipped in Le Rouge's dark chocolate that can only be described as insane. These weren’t for sale, though. “This has to do with me being a fanatic,” she says. Since her first batch of chocolates in October 2012, Aarti, a Weston resident born and raised in India, has been perfecting artisanal cocoa treats inspired by flavors from all over the world. From Texas (bourbon) to India (saffron pistachio), from France (orange-infused almond) to Hong Kong (Szechuan pepper, since retired). “I would put the kids to bed then go to the kitchen at 8:30 or 9:30 and work all night. Then make breakfast for them in the morning.” Every chocolate (and cake and cocoa mix) is handcrafted and sold exclusively from Le Rouge on Main Street in Westport. She never makes a batch of more than 100 chocolates and recommends they be eaten within one week. So why did a native of India become an expert in a non-Indian treat? The reason is as chimerical as the chocolates themselves. “I wanted to have my own path, not just to follow my husband. And I loved the term ‘chocolatier.’” Furthering her own journey, she only hires women. “I want women to learn, be independent and do what they want to do.”

WESTPORT’S AMAZING MAKERS

/Keeping Westport Artsy “WE MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY BY PROVIDING THEM AN ESCAPE FROM THE DRAMATIC, INTENSE AND UNRELENTING PRESSURES THEY FACE AT HOME AND AT WORK.”
A painting by HM Saffer. Currently on display at Westport River Gallery
Westport River Gallery owner Ken Warren
Ken Warren has made Westport a little more beautiful since 2004 when he first opened Westport River Gallery. As art collectors, Ken and his wife know how art can enrich the lives of those it touches. “We make people happy by providing them an escape from the dramatic, intense and unrelenting pressures they face at home and at work. The winter weather, honking and pressure to answer every text often melts away when they get home and magically enjoy the lavender of Provence, a beachside stroll, a European cafe or the regatta on the high seas. It’s not Narnia, but we enable people to remember life is not just about how much you do, and how much you make, but how much you

enjoy. And sometimes it reminds people they need to take a break, smile and relax.” Westport River Gallery reaches a wide variety of audiences: college students to celebrities; coast to coast. “One’s profession and income is no predictor of an interest in art,” Ken says. A typical day for Ken is as ever-evolving as Connecticut weather.

The path from electrical engineer to fashion designer is hardly well-tread; one rarely looks to the other for insight and guidance. Until 2006, when a Bombay-born Harvard MBA consultant/engineer living in Westport chose to ditch her corporate togs to create a line of high-end, irresistibly beautiful tunics, to become the Sulu Collection.
“Every interaction with a visitor, emailer or phone caller

Her evolving designs and color palette—corals, cobalts, navy and more—is the “Westernization of the Indian aesthetic,” as are the slimming cuts and styles, which now include dresses and jackets. Her clothes flatter a spectrum of women, including Jodie Foster, Halle Berry, Laura Bush and the writer of this article who can't seem to stop wearing hers. “I have many repeat customers because everyone tells them they look so pretty,” Sulu says. “[My designs] are tailored rather than boxy. They make women feel beautiful without trying very hard.” One woman, smitten with a too-small jacket, sprang for two then sliced up one to size up the other. (Sulu now sells sizes P- XXL). After Hurricane Florence, Sulu graciously donated 800 pieces to affected North Carolina residents through GEAR. Perhaps not the most practical item in a relief parcel but, according to a GEAR spokeswoman, one that made many women very happy.

/Making Children Smile Dr. Hannah Ahn is the best of the best when it comes to making Westport kids smile! Dr. Ahn began practicing pediatric dentistry at Westport Dental Associates six years ago. For as long as she can remember, she has had a passion for kids. “I always knew I wanted to work with children. I love how innocent and impressionable children are, and I always wanted to do something that would be a positive influence in their lives. I thought that if I could be someone who introduces the dental world to them and show them that it doesn’t have to be a scary experience or something they dread, then I will have done one small positive thing that will hopefully help them through the rest of their lives. "I also wanted parents to not dread having to take their kids to the dentist. I think dentists are often associated with negative emotions and thoughts, so my motivation stems from the hopes of creating a fun, safe and educational environment that the whole family can be excited about!” There’s no typical day in the life of a pediatric dentist. Dr. Ahn never knows when she’ll get a funny story from a 6-year-old, hear new accomplishments of a 3-year-old, or learn of new life developments from one of her teens. The best thing about her job? “Seeing my patients grow up! I have known many of my patients since they were born!”
