The Westport Fire Department volunteers their off-time for the beloved Santa Truck, delivering gifts to kids all over Westport and donating the proceeds to town-wide initiatives. Do you know someone in need? Please nominate them for the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign. Westport families have received funds in the past from this campaign - it really works and we hope you’ll learn more about it. Of course, the parties! WEST has some wonderful clothing ideas for festive occasions. Perhaps one of these occasions is the Staples Candlelight Concert - admission is always free and it showcases the entire music department. We did a deep dive into the Orphenians this year, the elite a cappella group that sings in the concert - and around the globe - each year. We can’t skirt the season without a gift guide! SCHOKE JFS’S MOBILE FOOD PANTRY MEETS CLIENTS WHERE THEY ARE

We learned of Schoke Jewish Family Services (Schoke JFS) from Westport resident Jillian Klaff. An advocate, volunteer, and board member, Jillian told us about all of the amazing services they provide, such as home companions, counseling services, kosher food pantry, and education programs. “These services aren’t just for Jewish people,” explains Jillian. “They are for anyone who is down on their luck, who are going through bad times, which could happen to anyone.” They realized not everyone who needs help can come to their offices in Stamford. So they decided to go to them. According to Chief Program Officer Leah Schechter, “Maybe they can’t get out of the house, or they have no money for a bus. Now we can meet a client where they’re at.” They began researching trucks from charities across the country in 2021. Last November, their

bespoke pantry-on-wheels struck out on its “native voyage.” The pantry includes ample space, two industrial freezers, two industrial refrigerators, and potential-pandemic-friendly shelf space accessible from the outside, like “an outdoor market.” Only hitch - would people feel comfortable receiving charity in a public space? Thankfully, our current consumption culture has paved the way to altruism al fresco. “We have festivals of trucks that serve food. The idea that someone comes to our truck for food is no longer shameful,” explains Leah. “A piece of stigma is removed.” Schoke JFS envisioned serving 50-100 families on their first outing. They were wrong; it served 400 families. Fun fact: their food pantries began 20 years ago, when a bar mitzvah student approached CEO Matt Greenberg about creating one. CEO Matt Greenberg wondered - who needs that? Still, Matt agreed to the mitzvah project, and Schoke JFS allocated the boy a cabinet in a closet for shelf-stable items. Then they added fresh produce once a month for roughly 30 families. “It was a farmer’s market in our conference room,” smiles Leah. Now they have a separate building, the truck, and are serving folks throughout all of Fairfield County. “We could open the pantry six to seven days a week and have the truck in a different location every day and it still wouldn’t be enough,” says Leah. But getting food to households isn’t all the truck has accomplished. Volunteers are seeing clients in their worlds, and the conversations

are lighter and easier than within the Schoke JFS center walls. “We’re here to take care of the whole person,” Leah states. And to the clients, who volunteers meet where they are, “it feels more dignified.” Which, happily, includes providing for the holidays, for which they’ve been preparing since September. Despite their year-round focus on nutrient-dense foods, at holiday time they offer clients “food items that feel like home and are culturally significant” which, hopefully, brings a bit of joy to food-insecure residents. They begin collecting special items 90 days in advance of the feasts. So at their monthly grocery pick-up in December, clients find festive items alongside the basics: cans of pie filling, oil and potatoes for latkes, eggs, cheeses, flour, butter, salt and pepper; ingredients we take for granted but many don’t have in their homes. Every home deserves a celebration.

Many are elderly, in a single or two-member household, and are on disability. Some are homeless. Fighting Fires, Spreading Cheer Westport Firefighters Annual Santa Truck ARTICLE BY CAROLINE C. BARNEY I've recently stumbled across vital information that everyone in town should know: Years ago, Santa went through his naughty-and-nice list and cross-referenced it with firefighters (for all of you doubters out there, the North Pole database is very sophisticated because Santa's nothing if not up with the times). This data search yielded some awe-inspiring results. Turns out, every member of the Westport Fire Department was on the nice list. So, with the signature twinkle in his eye, he called the reindeer and took a clandestine trip to Westport to get some one-on-one time with Assistant Chief of Training Brett Kirby, and others.

Santa got straight to the point: he needed to get the spirit meter higher. Westport had been showing some dips, and he wanted to address the problem straight on. Within no time, a plan was hatched. Sleighs were exchanged for fire engines. Elves were swapped out for professional firefighters. And because Santa can’t make it to Westport in December (no shame there - it's a busy prep time on the toy manufacturing floor), he sent a representative to stand in his place. The Westport Santa Run was a GO and has been a holiday favorite for nine years! For six nights in December, firefighter elves volunteer to accompany Santa’s firefighter stand-in CONTINUED >

throughout town, delivering gifts to families. Families and neighbors sign up for a visit and make a $35 donation per child (or more if they're feeling merry). Parents leave small gifts outside for the firefighter elves to grab on the way to the front door to deliver to the children. “The memories for our family are priceless, and we love knowing we are supporting the amazing work of the fire department,” says Westport resident and mom Lindsay Groher. The donations support the Westport Uniformed Firefighters Charitable Foundation (WUFCF). "We are firefighters trying to give back to the community in the best way that we can,” says the foundation's President, Rob Lenois. “Everything we do is done on volunteer time, and all of the money we collect goes right back to the community. This is all a labor of love.” Over the years, the foundation has given to many different organizations and initiatives, from The Hole in the Wall Gang to the CT Children's Hospital for children with cancer. Currently, they have two key charitable goals: 1. provide bed shaker smoke alarms to everyone in town with a hearing impairment, and 2. get every firefighter in Westport a cancer screening - vitally important, as cancer is considered an occupational hazard and early detection is everything. “I'm extremely proud of the members of the Westport Fire Department. Firefighters have a certain sense of altruism; they embody a giving spirit. This initiative reflects that spirit,” shares Deputy Fire Chief Nick Marsan.

The magic of the Santa Run is in the little noses pressed against windows, waiting earnestly. The look of wonder as tiny humans watch firefighters visit their neighborhoods. Most importantly, it inspires us as a community to care for each other and give back whenever possible. “[These nights] single-handedly [bring] the magic of a small-town feel literally inside your home,” says Westport mom Angela Puccetti. “We look forward to the generous hearts of the Westport Fire Department each year and have created small family traditions around this night since our move to Westport. We are so lucky and grateful to have this type of community engagement.” As if it couldn’t get any better, the firefighter team also partners with Westport’s Human Services to provide a central location for families that could benefit from an evening filled with the holiday spirit who might not otherwise have a chance to participate. A generous local firm donates gifts, pizzas and snacks, a decorated Christmas tree. And the Santa team is the main attraction - a joyous and festive evening. Needless to say, Santa is pleased with the results. He'll still be doing his yearly run on December 24th, but he knows in the interim, we’re in no better hands than the Westport Fire Department! School’s out. It’s 2:50 p.m. but what I’m witnessing is a tame version of the lunchroom scene in Fame. Andrew Maskoff sits at the piano, fingers flying across the keys, tapping out song snippets from various genres. Scores of students walk in, or hop in, or however one describes the gait of teenage girls and boys. They grab their black choral books. Some sit, others buzz about chatting or singing a few notes or a lyric. I’m watching them from my folding chair, trying to keep my laptop on my lap. The Orphenians, a prestigious audition-only group of a cappella singers, were founded in 1960 by then-choral director, the beloved George Weigle (1928-2018). The name is derived from Orpheus, the Greek god of music. The singers tackle challenging pieces like "Dominus Vobiscum" composed by Sydney Guillaume and John Corigliano's "L'Invitation au Voyage." Around 2:55, their accompanist, the accomplished Dr. Robert Kwan, walks in amidst their cheers and calls. At 3:00 most are seated when choral director Lauren Pines steps to the center and calls out, "Hello, Orphenians!" "Hello!!" they call back. And rehearsal begins. After a few warm-up exercises, Lauren turns to me and whispers, "It might be good that you're here; they're exceptionally well-behaved." George began his choral career at Bedford Junior High in 1954. "No one told me the kids had driven three choral teachers away the previous year, so I took the job," he once reminisced.

A few years later, he moved to Staples and set to work, starting his Orphenians, as well as bolstering the choral program established by his predecessor, John Ohanian. Success followed. By 1966, the "Orphs" were good enough to perform in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. As the years passed, they performed at festivals in Italy, France, Austria, Poland, Romania, and more. Just this summer, they traveled to Hawaii for the International Luau of Song Choral Festival. Numerous times throughout the years, the Orphs have traveled to San Francisco as one of ten high school choirs selected to participate in the prestigious Chanticleer National Youth Choral Festival, a four-day program in which they receive instruction from internationally respected performers and choral instructors. Ten years ago, they rocked the Staples Field House with the iconic '80s band Foreigner, singing with them the band's biggest hit, "I Want to Know What Love Is." But their largest audience was in 2015, at Yankee Stadium. In front of thousands of baseball fans, the Orphs sang a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, receiving extended applause. Staples then-principal John Dodig wrote, "I couldn't help myself. When I heard a family sitting in front of us saying that the Anthem never sounded so good, I had to say: 'They're mine'… Even in the horrible heat and humidity in the stadium, I had goosebumps all over my body." As a bonus, they met game-goers Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels. But despite their global acclaim, back in Westport they're best known, for now, for the Candlelight Concert. John Ohanian began the Candlelight Concert in 1940 (then the Christmas Candlelight Concert); a respite for war-weary residents. The concert showcased every facet of the music program - bands, orchestras, choruses. In 1960, George added the Orphs.

Orphs sang their signature challenging material for these concerts, such as Mendelssohn's "Weihnachten" and bespoke material. They continue to do so 63 years later. This year, they're premiering "I Found the Light," a new work by former Orphenian and lauded composer Jake Landau. Jake says it's "a secular piece designed for performance around the winter holidays, about 7 minutes long, following the journey of one walking home through winter snow."

As much as the students love singing in the concerts, some admit they prefer the downtown caroling. Zoë Schwartz, section leader of the sopranos, says, "I love caroling in downtown Westport; it's so cool to see everyone." Rohan Wadhwani agrees, "We don't really do pops in Orphenians, so caroling is fun. We once went to a country club, and there were a bunch of little kids who were enjoying it." It won't surprise anyone to learn that the teens in this exclusive ensemble are accomplished in myriad ways.

Alyssa Lee is the president of Staples Players and co-runs the Asian Students Association. Deneil Betfarhad is also in the jazz band, pit orchestra for Staples Players, symphonic band, played trumpet in western regionals and allstate band, and was an alternate in nationals, and is captain of the water polo team. He and Zoë co-founded an a cappella chorus with Lauren Pine's choral direction. Wunderkind Ethan Walmark is in the jazz band and Choralaires and wants "to go to college and be a famous musician singer/songwriter." (I spoke with these Orphs during a snack break. Robert brought doughnuts, so trying to land interviews was like chatting up locusts during the apocalypse. I hope I have all of my information straight, and sincere apologies for any errors.) These young adults enjoy the challenge and appreciate the beauty of their music. Perhaps now, perhaps later, they'll realize the other critical role the Orphenians play in their life. "Singing and playing with other people is so important," George explained. "You don't always realize when you're in high school how meaningful it is. Sometimes it takes decades to sink in. In 1979, a group of volunteers set up a trailer at the back of Stamford Hospital – an unlikely, but welcome refuge for victims of abuse who might find themselves in the emergency room wondering where to turn. The former Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education provided them with counseling, advocacy, and an understanding shelter in a storm to start them on the path to recovery. Forty-five years later, what is now called The Rowan Center is still taking its inspiration and conviction from that image of rescue and resilience.

“The name is taken from the Rowan tree,” said CEO Mary Forman Flynn, who joined the board of directors in 2017. “In a story about Thor, the Norse god, he fell into a raging river and was being swept away. He grabbed onto a twig of what happened to be a Rowan tree. It was small, but strong, and it saved his life. “It symbolizes strength and regrowth.” The Rowan Center knows a lot about growth. In its 45-year history the nonprofit has transformed from that trailer behind the hospital into a vital part of the nine-agency Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence. The Stamford-based

center serves communities from Greenwich to Weston, an area of about 400,000 individuals. In November, staff, volunteers, and community supporters gather for the group’s annual fundraiser, Gingerbread Houses and Cocktails for a Cause, a festive evening of fun, auctions and the genial rivalry of the gingerbread house-decorating competition. Held at the Inn at Longshore, the event generally sells out and proceeds support the Rowan Center’s many components, especially youth protection. Rooted in a three-pronged mission of counseling, advocacy, and education, The Rowan Center fielded about 1,000 calls to its crisis hotline and provided counseling and advocacy – which often involves court visits – to about 500 people last year. Rowan Center counselors offered 1,250 sessions to clients, who can avail themselves of 12 free sessions.

Mary and current board chair Sharon Walker Epps says the #MeToo movement of recent years has helped shine a needed light on the issue and made advocacy and education easier. “The #MeToo movement really helped a lot,” Mary says. “We were willing to face it, to understand it and to talk about it.” And that created a need to bolster the center’s trained personnel, making sure they were equipped to handle situations in a compassionate and professional manner, Sharon says. The center’s budget grew from about $600,000 to $1.5 million, and the staff, advisory council and board now include medical professionals, licensed certified social workers and law enforcement partners. A recent gala provided $200,000 and the annual gingerbread fundraiser adds about $150,000 now, she says.

“We more than doubled the staff,” Sharon added. “And they’re qualified, dedicated, hard-working people.” At this year’s fundraiser, The Rowan Center will present the Graber Legacy Award to a volunteer who exemplifies the dedication and compassion of former board member Pamela Graber, a 27-year Westport resident who passed away in 2022. A tireless advocate for victims and survivors, Graber helped plan the gingerbread event, took regular weekly shifts on the hotline and accompanied many victims and survivors to the hospital. A crucial piece of the puzzle is education, both for clients and for the community. The center has created robust partnerships with 36 schools, offering age-appropriate workshops and classes to about 17,000 children and teens.

The curriculum begins in the early grades, giving youngsters information about safety and personal space, Mary says. By 5th and 6th grade, educators offer tips for the digital world and later grades tackle consent and things to know before heading off to college or a career. “We call it prevention education,” Mary says. Like the tree that gave it its name, the center is still looking for helpful ways to branch out. Leaders are working toward a long-term clinic and programming for restaurant staff, people with disabilities and those in senior centers, nursing homes and assisted living. With bystander intervention awareness a hot topic, they’re considering more ways to train those who might find themselves in the position to offer aid – including educators, fraternity members and bartenders.

Working with law enforcement in local communities ensures victims receive the help they need in crisis situations. The Rowan Center works with police departments, training them to spot signs of violence. “It really takes a community to step up and make a difference,” says Sharon. While the work can be grueling, that difference is a godsend to clients like A.H: “Whenever I feel like giving up or letting it go, there is always a reassurance to push on,” she says. “I would recommend the services to anyone who is in a situation where they are needed. I have been at my lowest points…, but when I go into a session and have talks [with my counselor], my security comes back. I know they are always a phone call away!”

Cream the butter, sugar, and aquafaba together using a fork in a large mixing bowl, or stand mixer. 3. Whisk together baking powder, baking soda, and flour in a separate large mixing bowl. 4. Alternate between adding flour mix and orange juice to the creamed butter and sugar, using a rubber spatula to combine. If using a stand mixer, mix on low speed the entire time with the dough mix attachment. 5. Slowly add in the oil until well combined. The dough should be a cohesive ball and slightly wet to the touch. 6. Using a small ice cream scoop, drop cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet, leaving 1 inch of space between each.

Pumpkin Sage Cream Pasta Yield: 4-6 servings

1 lb linguine or your favorite pasta shape ½ stick vegan or dairy butter 5 cloves of garlic, minced 1 shallot, minced 1 teaspoon oregano ¼ teaspoon nutmeg A dash of cinnamon 1 teaspoon chili flakes, plus more for garnish 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped, + ¼ cup whole sage leaves, for frying 1 cup of organic pumpkin purée 2 tbsp red wine or apple cider vinegar 1.5 cups vegan or dairy heavy cream, or unsweetened coconut milk 1 cup vegan or dairy grated parmesan, plus more for garnish ½ tablespoon olive oil

directions: 1. Cook your pasta according to package directions until al dente, drain, and set aside. 2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium high heat. Then, add your garlic, shallot, oregano, nutmeg, cinnamon, chili flakes and 2 tablespoons of fresh sage. 3. Reduce the heat to medium and sauté until garlic and shallots have browned, stirring occasionally, about 3-4 minutes. Then, stir in the pumpkin purée. 4. Reduce heat to medium low, and add vinegar and heavy cream, stirring quickly to combine and emulsify until creamy and thick. Add the pasta to the sauce and mix well until all pieces are well coated with sauce. Turn off the heat. 5. In a separate, small saucepan, coat the bottom of the pan with the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the remaining sage leaves in a single layer, watching them carefully as they cook. After 1 minute, flip and continue to fry them. When they’re ready, the edges will be crispy and the color will be slightly browned. 6. Serve pasta immediately. Place your favorite holiday cookie cutter on the board first. Fill the cookie cutter with mini marshmallows. Next, layer the large items first. Begin with the chocolate covered Biscotti and build around that using berries. Pile the berries high. Next add a variety of chocolate covered treats on opposite sides of each other between the mounds of berries. Be sure to add touches of berries around the edges. If space allows, place hot cocoa on board. Otherwise, set bowl full of hot cocoa mix and any additional hot cocoa fixings adjacent to the board.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. IT’S NOT REALLY ABOUT THE GIFT...

I was six years old and excited to buy my parents Christmas gifts for the first time. My mom took me, my sister, and my brother to Richmond Gordman to shop. Cash hot in my pocket, I was released into the department store, wandering independently of parental supervision because that’s what parents did back then. I must have searched the toy department three times and still couldn’t find the right gift. I drifted to the jewelry department, pressing the buttons atop a glass cabinet, watching trinkets on felted metal shelves ferris-wheel beneath the counter. Then I saw them: matching Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse bracelets. I felt the euphoria only a child can feel on the cusp of the best decision of their life. I bought the bracelets. Proud as all get-out, I carried them home: pure electricity in a paper bag. And then my dad came home. And the shock of the truth hit me: grown men don’t wear Mickey Mouse bracelets. I cried. Cried. My parents asked me what was wrong, but I was inconsolable. Finally, I could stutter: I bought Daddy a Mickey Mouse bracelet and men don’t wear Mickey Mouse bracelets. Dad looked at me and smiled, “I love Mickey Mouse bracelets!” Even then, I knew it wasn’t true - he didn’t love Mickey Mouse bracelets. Grown men typically don’t polish their look by throwing on a Disney bauble. But I was just happy to know it didn’t matter what I bought him. He loved me and appreciated whatever I did for him. I’ve carried this throughout my life: what someone does for you isn’t as important as why they’re doing it. Also, never underestimate the power of a little white lie.
