Summer at Last!

July 2022 PUBLISHER

It’s finally summer, when Westport and Weston truly shine. Considering an outdoor picnic? Make it a fabulous party picnic with Posh Picnics: three local moms who elevate the sit-on-a-blanket-don’t-getsand-in-your-sandwich experience. Heading to the beach? Compo has long been a beloved part of Westport, as has its one remaining century-old store, Old Mill Grocer. Which you may know better as Elvira’s or Elvira Mae’s. We almost lost it this spring, but a group of residents (heroes) and donors saved it and plan to make it even better than before. So you can get your lunch before heading to the beach. While at the beach, consider listening to a local podcast. We’ve highlighted a few of them in this issue and you can find them wherever you like to get podcasts. In fact, they may inspire you to do your own podcast. You can easily do so at Verso Studio - Westport Library’s exciting and impressive top-of-the-line recording studio. Read our article then sign up yourself, your parents, or even your kids for instruction from a team of professionals (all free, of course). For those of you who insist on sunscreen when on the beach, you may want a spray tan from Simoni of Pearl Tan Co., possibly the best spray tan artist in Fairfield County (this is only the opinion of thousands of her customers.) We wrote about a tanning experience with her. And for those who travel, read about Rene Prasad, founder of Grand Explorations. She’s a travel expert who plans sensational vacations to farflung places so you don’t have to spend hours researching without really knowing what you’re doing. Lastly, check out our buy guide for whimsical and unique summer items, like a gigantic Connect-4 game, pink flamingo salt and pepper shakers, and a Kissing Hedgehogs lined picnic blanket. Happy Summer to everyone!

Old Mill Grocer, 100 Years Later HISTORY, COMMUNITY, AND FOND MEMORIES OF ILLICIT CANDY PURCHASES

Historically, the building’s not remarkable. George Washington never slumbered beneath its beams. No famous film used it as a set. Unassuming architecture by today’s standards. Lousy parking. But ask almost any Westport resident - they’ll insist it’s one of the most important places in town. Which is a heady remark about a store that sells toilet paper and turkey sandwiches. This past March, Elvira Mae’s was days away from the proverbial wrecking ball. As most of you know, Elvira Mae’s was the deli and coffee shop in the Compo neighborhood, near Old Mill Beach, housed in the aforementioned building that saw thousands of Westporters and their offspring drag sand onto its floor in pursuit of ice cream cones and burgers.

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

WLM learned of its potential demise from über resident Dan Woog’s blog (06880.org). We also learned about the folks who challenged themselves to save the modest store, keeping it alive for future generations of wayward kids trying to buy candy bars without their parents’ permission. First, a quick history as best as I can cobble it together: Old Mill Grocer (OMG) opened in the 1920’s as a local grocery, then was quickly renamed Old Mill Grocery & Deli (OMGD). This is waaayy back when coastal property wasn’t prized as it is today (one homeowner decried his beachfront real estate as “too moist.”) OMGD then sold the grocery to Kenny around 1931. Kenny’s became the store where teens and adults alike scored their Fanta and cigarettes. Kenny was infamous for his lack of hygiene. Says Jim Hood, “One guy who knew him said, ‘Did you know Kenny kept his lawn mower in his bathtub? Because he never used his lawn mower and he never took a bath.’” What no one knew then is Kenny was saving his soap money for loftier endeavors. Dan writes “When he died, he left hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Westport YMCA.” When Kenny passed around 1983, three realtors purchased his estate - two homes and the store. After, let’s hope, decontaminating it, they leased the store to Peter’s Market, then to Stacey and Nick Yiozanakos who transformed it into the much-adored Elvira’s. Named after the matriarch’s sister who died at age 38, it became the go-to place for passersby and, according to Dan, “residents who rely {sic} on it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, conversation, gossip.” Thousands of kids - many now adults grew up going to the market throughout its numerous permutations. Ian Warburg reminisces “…this little joint has been an epicenter of sorts for me for my entire life. [I] Loved sneaking in there with my pals to get forbidden treats when we were kids, with the spare change we were able to scrounge up from around our houses and parent’s cars.” Jim, a 30-year resident of Westport, stopped by with his big,

fluffy dog, Koda, “every day that I wasn’t traveling.” Ask almost anyone who loves the area and they’ll have a favorite memory. Now, in the years that this market was busy being a market, the neighborhood around it became residential. The building stands on old soil that’s grandfathered into a clause permitting the site to be commercial. However, should one develop the property for a homeowner, the site can no longer sell so much as a dill pickle again. But the seller would make a boatload of money. So the owners of the dirt beneath Elvira’s decided to go full-on house build. Then “neighbors got very rowdy” about losing their store. So with the help and understanding of their neighbors, Stacey and Nick purchased the site. In 2008, Elvira’s was “struggling to keep the lights on.” The neighbors rallied, pre-funding accounts to help them keep it open, lest they lose their beloved grocery and deli to a resident hopeful. In 2018 Nick was ready to retire and put it up for sale. The ‘hood twitched. Fortunately, new residents Hal and Betsy Kravitz swooped in and purchased it when the price leveled out. Why? “Because we’re crazy,” laughs Hal. Plus they loved its charm and history. They appended Betsy’s middle name, Mae, to the sign: Elvira Mae’s, creating an unintended Mistress of Macabre-meets-Mary Ann homage to the past owners and the new. After a year in business they partnered with Joey Romano, changing the name to Joey’s by the Shore - Featuring Elvira Mae’s Coffee Bar. Catchy! But the neighbors loved Joey’s and Elvira Mae’s had great coffee, so… But in December 2021, Ian, Jim, and Chris noticed a “For Sale” sign on JBTSFEMCB. The Kravitzes were moving and, despite months of searching, couldn’t find a buyer. So the trio, with Tommy Febbraio and Emily Zobl, floated to Betsy and Hal the idea of a possible community purchase of JBTSFEMCB. “I thought it was a fantastic idea,” remarks Hal. But realistic? Hmm… Lacking concrete alternatives, the couple reluctantly began talks with residential developers. Not so fast, developers. Around January 2022 the quintet girded their coins, resolving to purchase the antique store, the outward appearance of which hasn’t changed in 100 years. To do so, they had to raise $1.3 million by a deadline of April 1. They quickly readied their team, including Sophie Pollman and Scott Kobak, and began the race to rescue OMG.

30

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

While busily raising funds, they also researched local delis and grocers. One of them being The Porch at Christie’s, also in a historic building (1926), which the Pecoriellos successfully revitalized last year. They noted Porch’s prized Sweet P Bakery in which they train and employ developmentally and intellectually disabled adults. This was their A-ha! moment: the new iteration of OMG would employ this same population and they’d apply for nonprofit status. They reached out to Margie Jacobson and Marina Derman, mothers of challenged adult children. Margie’s response: “When I heard you were saving the market, I wanted to be involved. When I heard you were hiring people with disabilities, I had to be involved.” Writes Marina, the mother of two autistic adult sons, “My son, who has autism, is one of the lucky ones who does have a job.* His job is the centerpiece of his weekly schedule. He’s so proud to work there, and is a faster and more productive worker than many of his peers.” Meanwhile, donations rolled in from all over town. But on March 26, while the deadline sharpened its fangs in preparation for the kill, the OMG team was short $325,000. They bought donuts and coffee, installed themselves in the empty Elvira Mae’s, and invited the public to an old-fashioned chat’n’chew’n’chip-in. A strategy as timeless as the structure itself. By March 31 they raised the last few thousand bucks. Over 500 individuals from all over Westport and beyond gave money to save the grocery. Of these, 100 people donated a million. 400 people gave the rest, with amounts as little as $10. That night I like to imagine that the now-septet cried, laughed, held hands and tried to sing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Few were as happy as the Kravitzes, “Fantastic! Oh, we were so relieved! It’s unbelievable what they did.” Then Hal happily concedes, “It’s going to be way better than what it was, certainly better than what we’d be doing.” The new name is Old Mill Grocery & Deli (get it?). There’s a long way to go - more funds, infrastructure, logistics - but they’ve cleared a big hurdle thanks to Westport strong. It would be wonderful to go back to the 1920’s and tell the OMG owners how important their store will be to hundreds of thousands of Westporters. 100 years from now, it would be wonderful if they knew the lengths people went to save it. *He works at Garden Catering, New Haven

POSH PICNICS MAKES OUTDOOR EATING OVER-THE-TOP FABULOUS

Last summer Gloria Garvey, Gina Merolla, and Kris Greer planned a birthday party for Kris’s daughter. They had seen a few beautiful picnic setups on Instagram and thought “we can do that!” And they were right. Not only did they do that but they were really good at it. With just one picnic under their belt, Posh Picnics CT was born. After the design mavens created their signature Boho themed setup, which boasts rich jewel tones and a very cool teepee, they wanted to bring in another color combination, prompting their Coastal theme with light and airy blue, white, and soft accents.

Posh Picnics Coastal Chic Theme

Coastal Chic

The picnics proved so popular they added kids’ parties: Posh Petites. Like Posh Picnics, Posh Petites offers themes, like Dino Rawr, Magical (think mermaids & unicorns), Frozen, and more, but if you’re looking for a specific theme the ladies will customize one for you. They’ve done picnics for date night, girls night, happy hours, wedding showers, rehearsal dinners, backyard soirees, beach sunsets, kids birthdays, living room setups, and beyond. The favorite, so far, may be the one in a castle for a proposal. Kris recalls, “We set up a picnic inside a limestone castle where a couple was to get engaged. We had hundreds of candles; it was beautiful.” From June to December of 2021 these ladies created 33 events and plan to be even busier this year. All you have to do is show up and enjoy. The posh picnickers set-up, run, and take down the props, plates,

and tables like a well-oiled machine. Gloria’s basement is their design headquarters, where they dream up the design scheme, set-up, and take-down. “Everyone has their job,” explains Gloria. “Gina handles the pillows which get sorted by color, Kris and I attack the table. Kris takes the garbage and I take the linens. We unload everything at my house afterwards. Now we’ve gotten clean-up down to 20 minutes.” Imagine showing up at the beach, with a bottle of wine and some snacks (the Posh Picnic team doesn’t supply food or beverage, but if you’d like your event catered, they can recommend a myriad of great vendors) and one of these picturesque setups is waiting for you with absolutely zero schlepping! Heaven! If you’re like me and cannot wait to get on their schedule you can find more on PoshPicnicsCT.com or @PoshPicnicsCT

Rene Prasad (Photo: Cara Gilbride of Calla Lily Studios)

When Rene Prasad worked for a tech firm, the Chicago-based businesswoman spent a lot of time traveling for work. In Europe? To the Far East? Try nondescript convention centers in tired downtowns up and down the Eastern seaboard. “I spent a lot of downtime in hotel rooms and not in the greatest spots,” says Rene, who has called Westport home for the last four years. While scrolling around for ways to pass the time on the hotel TV or her laptop, she stumbled across online programs that would help a creative, adventurous sort like herself become a travel expert. “You can become a specialist in Italy or Mexico or anywhere else. It sounded like fun,” she says. “And I was in a place in my life where I could do something like that.” So she started surfing the web and training herself in the fine art of well-planned, savvy travel. Pair her newfound expertise with a lifelong love of new experiences and both a passion and a profession were born. Rene is now the founder and driving force behind Grand Explorations Travel, a boutique agency designing luxury and personalized travel for those who want to build one-of-a-kind journeys of their own. “What do I love about it?” Rene says, a wide smile blossoming across her face. “I love how new experiences open people’s eyes. Seeing a new perspective, traditions, cultures – it changes you as a person.” And if the daunting task of planning a trip is not your idea of an excellent adventure, Rene may become your best friend. In addition to having researched everything from some of the most picturesque locales in popular Italy to the dos and don’ts of Dubai, she specializes in tailoring trips to her clients. She has plenty of advice for those hoping to dip a toe in the post-COVID travel pool.

• Read the small print. The good news is the world is opening up with each passing month, but make sure you know just what you’re getting into. Keep tabs on oft-changing restrictions and precautions for your transport, accommodations, and itinerary. Better yet, let a trusted advisor keep tabs for you. • Consider incorporating your hobbies into your trip. When she meets with clients, Rene asks a slew of questions. Recently she found out a couple enjoyed motorcycling and found a way for them to rev up their Hawaiian adventure with some exhilarating sightseeing rides • Considering a cruise, but don’t want to spend a week listing to starboard? Try

a gentler, more intimate journey down a river. While the port of call for a huge, ocean-going ship can be a half-hour or more from your destination, smaller river boats often drop anchor near the bustling center of town. • Where is everybody? Want to be where the action is in August? Snag a beach house – a summertime respite before the school year begins anew. January blues? You’re likely to find post-holiday “wave season” deals on cruises for people who want to get away from the winter blahs. • Join the big leagues. The Ladies’ Travel League, that is. As we move past the pandemic, Rene is hoping to reinvigorate her idea for a women’s group travel option to

places like Morocco, where local guides help bring the culture alive. Travel mates don’t have to be the spouse and kids. While travel always has a few unexpected surprises up its sleeve, Rene said she adores her career and the fact that she will have visited six of the seven continents after an upcoming trip to Antarctica. She’s hoping to plan a jaunt to Australia to finish the list soon. What makes it all so memorable? “The people,” she says without hesitation. “Most of my clients have been really lovely people.”

WHERE ART AND TECHNOLOGY CONVERGE

If you’re spending time at the beach, it is time to get your skin checked for abnormal moles, skin cancer, and sun-related pre-cancerous spots. Any persistent bump, rough patch, or sore can be a sign of skin cancer. Our knowledgeable and professional doctors, Dr. Tanya Futoryan and Dr. Lauren Levy, will be glad to check you over. Please call or text to book your skin check appointment.

“Dr. Futoryan and her professional staff are everything you could hope for and rarely find in a health care provider. On my first visit, for an unrelated matter, Dr. Futoryan spotted a basal cell carcinoma on my face, although the dermatologist who I had been regularly seeing, completely missed it. After having her visual diagnosis confirmed by a biopsy, she then arranged for me to see the best Mohs specialist in the state. Her concern and attentiveness before and after the surgery were extraordinary. More recently, during a routine body skin check, she correctly identified (and subsequently removed) a melanoma, that to anyone else would have looked like a small freckle. Her medical skills are amazing, and she is supported by staff, all of whom are competent, professional and caring. In addition to purely medical procedures, Dr. Futoryan is excellent when it comes to cosmetic/elective procedures. She is both detail orientated and reassuring, carefully explaining before, during and after the procedure, exactly what the patient should expect. Dr. Futoryan treats each of her patients with extraordinary skill and sensitivity. She’s the best.” - Ellen

“Dr. Futoryan was recommended to me by my regular dermatologist who I highly trust. He said that Dr. Futoryan is the master at eye area Botox. He was right. My results are amazing. Beautiful and natural. I wouldn’t go to anyone else.” - Christine

“I first went to Westport Dermatology for routine skin checks and the doctors are thorough, knowledgeable, and most importantly, make me feel comfortable that I am on top of any potential issues. After a year or so, I decided to try cosmetic treatments including lasers, Scupltra (a complete game changer) and some Botox. Dr Futoryan is an expert and approaches the face from a holistic view – results are so natural. Highly recommend!” - K. Cam

“I’ve been a patient of Dr.Futoryan’s for many years and have never been disappointed in the care I’ve received. I’ve visited the office for medical reasons (skin checks etc) and also for cosmetic procedures. I love that my results always look natural, and that my concerns and questions are honored and answered effectively. She is the only provider who has never caused my brows to drop when Botox-ing my forehead! I will absolutely continue to visit this office, can’t recommend it highly enough!” - Anne

HOW VERSO STUDIO HELPS RE-DEFINE WESTPORT LIBRARY

R E C OR D

I walked down the hall to Verso Studio, Westport Library’s (WL) recording studio, past their Library of Things. I stopped, as always, to search for the metal detector. But once again some other lucky cardholder got to it before me. So I continued to the studio, empty-handed but hoping I’d see it on the way out so I could begin searching for free money. Then I entered the studio and, Westport, no metal detector on earth can compare to the riches within. A recording studio! I don’t mean a conference room with a tape recorder for immortalizing family anecdotes and toddler sing-a-longs. We have a “hybrid analog recording studio… designed by leading industry experts and thinkers for first-rate, distinctive, and powerful results.” Do you know what WL is doing with Verso? Everything audio. Podcasts, bands, audio books, virtual hypnosis appointments. And do you know who’s doing all of this? YOU. And experts. But, still, you. According to executive director Bill Harmer, “We want to re-brand libraries for the community. We’re about higher learning, not just a repository for books.” People learn in different ways - art, books, podcasts, music, so WL is re-defining the purpose and reach of the institution by embracing different educational mediums. And who better to create content than the residents of a town boasting some of the most creative minds in America? Heading Verso are two outstanding industry professionals, Travis Bell (Audio Studios Manager/Sound Engineer) and Brendan Toller (Marketing Manager of Verso Studios). More on them later. Okay, where to begin… While at VersoFest this spring, WL’s new three day music festival, Bill filled me in on a new endeavor. No doubt you recall, from an article in this magazine several years ago, that Bill knows a lot about music. In Trefz Forum (big space on the 2nd floor) Verso Studio recorded performances of “…original music from unsigned musicians in the community, from as many genres as possible,” says Bill. “We’ve captured some incredible moments.” Then, with all of this music, they released a debut album this May under the label “Verso Records”. I mean, have you ever heard of a library producing a record? Why not? Because they don’t. Until now. But Bill points out, “Libraries publish books. So why not make records?” Indeed. A new recording studio also helps explain our sudden preponderance of podcasts. WL first reached out to Dan Woog to record “06880: The Podcast” (see article on page 46 in this issue). Since then, numerous folks - Tom Henske, Miggs and Trace Burroughs, Scott Ruden, Berenice Angelini, and more - have learned how to record their own podcasts. Anyone with a library card, no matter the library, may have up to two hours a month to record and four hours a day in the post-production facility (editing, programming, etc. There’s a fee for commercial users but it’s less than typical recording studios). WL is also encouraging writers to create audiobooks. “Many midlevel authors can’t create audiobooks through a publisher,” Bill explains. Recording may sound daunting to the inchoate caster of pods and audio-fiers of books, but WL isn’t just a world class

recording studio, it’s a community resource. There are classes, individual instruction, and other opportunities to learn how to use the equipment and software to the best of its - and your ability. Which is great because, frankly, it looks intimidating. WL also plans to offer a core curriculum in the fall and even a certification course. Starting with hands-on instruction from the experts I mentioned earlier. Travis has mixed over 1,000 live events and over 300 records, including the hugely successful independent record “Oh My God, Charlie Darwin” by Low Anthem. Brendan, a musician and filmmaker, has seen several of his films in the festival circuit, including “Danny Says,” a chronicle of the life of The Ramones’ Danny Field, deemed by rock-doc enthusiasts as “One of the greatest releases in rock.” Community amateurs of all ages, with Brendan and Travis, ran the three full days of VersoFest this spring. “When it was all done, it seemed like they were floating above the carpet,” Bill smiles. “It was this incredible communal vibe.” “Incredible” is an apt descriptive. I left the studio and walked back down the Library of Things hall, buzzing with awe and excitement. I hardly cared about the metal detector,

A band of wise women – you might know them as The Go-Go’s – probably said it best: Vacation, all I ever wanted/Vacation, had to get away. If there was ever a time to grab your significant other and kids -- or maybe a gaggle of BFFs -- and hop in the car for a summer road trip, this is it. And we know the perfect drivable destination – where you can splash and sun the day away, challenge yourself on the links and indulge in sumptuous meals and spa treatments before heading back to the bustle we call reality. Tucked in the rolling mountains just 90 minutes away from Westport is Crystal Springs Resort, a luxury locale featuring six golf courses, two spas, a biosphere complete with waterfalls and pools and 10 dining options, including a four-star restaurant with a world-renowned wine cellar. The lush fairways and pristine greens at Crystal Springs are one of its star attractions. Designed by Robert von Hagge, Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio and Roger Rulewich and others, the six championship-caliber courses wind through the picturesque Appalachian scenery offering just the right blend of challenge and variety. The

After a long day on the links, sink into one of two award-winning spas for a tension-taming treat. Elements Spa at Minerals Hotel features a serene retreat for wellness services channeling the healing power of earth and nature. A BRIGHT SUNSHINE-Y SPRAY BUSINESS IS HOT FOR PEARL TAN

70

S KIN CA R E | BEAU TY

In high school, I tanned. I inhaled Christie Brinkley’s tanning tips, sprinkling water on my legs to intensify the sun’s coruscating toxicity. Sunscreen was for… I wasn’t sure. I only knew that the lower the number on the bottle, the better the darkening of the epidermis. My mom taught me that. Of course, I was impervious to skin cancer, as all UVA ray enthusiasts were back then. Until we weren’t. 20 years ago my mom had basal cell carcinomas carved from her nose and chest. That was my “OMF” moment.

SIMONI DE SOUZ A

Now I’m fully committed to sun hats and sunscreen. Sorry, ‘80s Christie. My skin is better for it but I missed the “healthy” no make-up look of hardcore sun exposure. Surprisingly, I never considered a spray tan until a friend raved about Pearl Tan, owned by Simoni De Souza who’s been golden-glowing women in Fairfield County for over 14 years. Ever the seeker of knowledge and self-improvement, I called her for a spray. She recommended I schedule the tan two days before an event so it would have time to mellow and look most natural. Which I did. Promptly at our scheduled time she cruised (safely) into my driveway. She opened her trunk, removed her tools of the trade, and I led her into my home. In my kitchen she popped up a threesided tent. “How dark do you want to be, one to ten, ten being the darkest?” she asked. I stammered “Five?” I stood inside the tent and applied moisturizer to my hands while she applied some to my feet to prevent them from absorbing too much solution and becoming over-saturated. Then she sprayed me (vegan, paraben free, cruelty free) and BOOM! - within 15 minutes of her arrival I had an enviable sun-kissed gleam that I haven’t seen on my body since the days I slathered up with baby oil and crawled onto my parent’s roof to tempt the cancer gods. Then my new favorite spray tan artist packed up, leaving my kitchen spotless, and put everything neatly back into her car. She had another appointment - in fact, she had appointments from 9:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. The next day I was tan. I would have worn a gauzy sundress and walked barefoot on the beach were it not 50 degrees and raining. My skin was the perfect color and looked completely natural save for the fact my nose wasn’t redder than the rest of my face and my skin didn’t break out a few days later. Oh, and I wasn’t destroying my body. Update: Simoni opened a pop-up shop at 179 Post Road West, 2nd Floor, Westport. PearlTanCo.com
