Women are strong. THIS PAST YEAR HAS TAUGHT ME THAT WOMEN ARE CAPABLE OF HANDLING ANYTHING! While I’ve personally had some tough moments throughout my life, nothing could have prepared me for the challenges of 2020-2021. Balancing motherhood/family life, fear for my family’s health, fear for the future of my business, the disruption of normalcy; the pandemic has been one of the scariest roller coasters I’ve ever been

The amazing women in this issue are all on different paths with varied experiences. But one common thread is evident in all. They all have passion. But with fewer sales and the additional costs of PPE, cleaning supplies, and air filters, options are limited. Everyone was hit hard, but businesses selling services - massages, facials, dry-cleaning - were especially slapped down during quarantine. From these businesses, people purchase “time.” If no one buys the hour, then the hour is gone forever and it’s impossible to recoup the cost. Gift certificates bring in money and may help bridge a deficit, but at some point the business must pay staff to deliver the service when no additional revenue is forthcoming. Obviously, it’s a polarizing initiative. None of us are anxious to donate our money to, say… well, I won’t name anything specific but you get the idea. For many us, charity means something larger than keeping a boutique gym afloat. However, it’s not meant to replace philanthropic initiatives. It’s meant to offer aid to businesses you love, that may otherwise be unable to survive. Her idea sprang from an unexpected visit from an attorney last May. “He handed me a check for $5,000 and told me his clients were giving money to their favorite local businesses. It was wonderful!” The DMA liked the message and is partnering with her in the initiative. Businesses can log onto SaveLocalWestport. com to sign up. For a small fee, they’ll be included in the signage and marketing and be granted a part of “Save Local” donations. “If you love a local business,” Lori explains, ”help save it!” It’s a challenging ask but these are challenging times. As Lori concedes, “It was hard for me to open up and say this, to ask for money, but if you can’t ask your community that relies on your business services, who can you ask?”

AMAZING WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY

SEPTEMBER SIRICO OWNER AND FOUNDER, BLOW DRY SOUTHPORT + WESTPORT “I’m the first in my family to go to college. My dad didn’t finish high school but he’s talented, a hard worker, and has a beautiful mindset. His first job was sweeping hair at a salon so he could learn from the hairdressers. He worked for free, showed up early, stayed late, did whatever he had to do to learn. In 1977 he opened Greg & Tony in the location where it still is today.” “I wasn’t allowed to work at Greg & Tony growing up; my parents wanted me to get experience outside the family business. I worked for Westport Pizzeria, Joey’s by the Shore, and Mitchells in customer service. I love working for family businesses and having the owners work side by side with you.” “I still have all my best friends from Staples - we refer to ourselves as Wreckers quite often. As an athlete, I never saw the Wreckers as a gender, it just made me feel strong.” “A blow-dry bar is an old idea. Back in the 1950’s women never washed their hair on their own. They came into the salon weekly for a blow dry and set.” “We didn’t expect blow dry to be so busy from the start; we were caught off guard.” “We talk about health, fitness, and nutrition just as much as cut, style, and color. I thought ‘If i’m going to talk about this all day I should have some accreditation.’ So I became a certified nutrition coach.” “Our comeback from Covid has been slow but steady thanks to our loyal clients. Our team stuck together and put in the work. We just want to know we’re doing everything we can do. “ https://www.blowdrysouthport.com

GILLIAN ISAACS FOUNDER OF SHERATON CAREGIVERS: SENIOR AND IN-HOME CARE “In 1997 I became a caregiver for a rabbi’s wife who had Alzheimer’s. We didn’t really understand the disease at the time.” “She couldn’t articulate anything but she always knew how to say ‘thank you.’ I put her to bed like a baby, I made sure she looked good and smelled good, I’d wake her up with a song; she loved the music.” “On weekends I met families who had loved ones like the rabbi’s wife. They asked how I knew what she wanted, I said, ‘It’s the unspoken word,’ the touch I shared with her, the smile on my face.“ “She was a schoolteacher and loved educating children. He couldn’t understand why his celebrated wife of so many years couldn’t have a conversation with him.” “Why can’t she understand me? ‘Rabbi,’ I said, ‘she does by your expressions.’” “I wanted to go into finance. This changed all of that.” “Sheraton [in Westport] is the fourth senior caregiving agency I’ve opened in Fairfield County.” “[In art therapy] we had a simple project of tracing the hand. Our client, a father, was to do this with his wife and his daughter. He was reluctant and his daughter talked him into doing it, so he finally agreed. A week later the dad passed. The picture is framed in his wife’s home. It’s a happy memory and the last thing they did together.” “Everybody is somebody, we shouldn’t forget who they were.” https://www.sheraton.care

CHRISTY CHARISE FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL, STRATEGIC ADVISOR “I grew up in upstate New York. My dad’s a master mechanic and my mom was a surgical nurse. As the first to go to college in my family, I only applied to Cornell. I didn’t realize how competitive it was or that I probably should have also applied somewhere else.” “In 2021 inclusivity and diversity are increasingly spotlighted in the workplace: LBGTQ, race, women. Professionally, I’m cognizant of the balance between being a leader who sets the tone and being a supportive ally that allows each community to drive its own discussion and experience.” “My mom’s an incredible role model. I want my kids to see the value of hard work and the fulfillment that comes from achievement and also from service to others.” “At 16 I wanted to be a motivational speaker. Do you know Dr. Rick Rigsby? He has an incredible laugh! As a high school student, I heard him speak about a gas station cashier who gave him too much change. Though the line was long, he waited to give her the extra change back. She started crying as she told him the money would have been taken out of her paycheck. This story changed how I thought about my own ethical litmus test.” “You write your own moral code. In a lot of your decisions in life, no one else is looking.” strategicadvisor.co

DR. JESSICA MELMAN BESPOKE VETERINARY SERVICES “I moved to Weston because I wanted to have a farm. I’d love to have an animal sanctuary.” “Four cavaliers, a Bernese Mountain dog, a rabbit, two geckos, three cats, a fish, and two rescue pigs. The chicken count is hard because I’m constantly taking in chickens. 17? One is a rooster. Eight ducks, three goats, and three sheep who are huge troublemakers. They break into the barn office and everyone follows.” “When you have a farm you find so many people who want to help with animals. A young boy with special needs comes once a week to feed and interact with the animals.” “Major silver lining in the pandemic - a lot of people got dogs; the shelters are empty. I’ve had people cry, telling me it’s the best thing they ever did.” “One of my biggest fears? I’m afraid a lot of these puppies won’t be socialized and won’t know how to live on their own when their owners go back to work. Their owners may not be able to manage them and their jobs.” “My sheep are sheared twice a year. I bought the clippers because it looked so easy but it’s so hard to flip the sheep. It didn’t happen. Then I found a nice young girl an hour away to shear them. I learned if you grab them in the area behind their teeth you can flip them pretty easily.” “Uh oh. The goats just broke into the barn.” bespokevetservice.com

I remember a show, Space Bridges, which he hosted with Phil Donohue - and now we live in the area he lived in!” “I remember Michael Bolton from Russia, I remember his different hair - who could have thought we’d be in the same town?” “It’s the immigrant mentality - you see something you like, you work hard to get it.” “I was in sales at Prada, my husband was in construction. We bought an apartment across from the Brooklyn Museum. There was an exhibition there, SENSATION. It was a scandal! The artist was Damien Hirst - before he was ‘Damien Hirst!’” “We renovated this apartment - we got it from an estate sale, it was dilapidated and we fixed it up. RIA RUEDA CHIEF CULTURE OFFICER AND INSTAGRAM BFF “I started @BuzzCT to promote small businesses - food, beverage, wellness, style, art, design, travel - things that create a ‘buzz’. If I love it, I want to share the experience with others.” “Small businesses need as much PR as possible now. If I can support them through the power of social media and word of mouth, that’s my way of giving back.” “[@BuzzCT] has gotten good reception. As for demographics, I run the gamut from 20’s to people in their 60’s. It’s a nice range that can afford some high-end things and some more budget-friendly. I try to speak in my real voice so I’m approachable; I want to be that friend that people can ask, ‘Hey what about this?’” “I don’t like to pretend that life is always rosy. I suffer from anxiety and depression, so sharing my mental struggles with others is important to me.” “I was diagnosed with fibroids and uterine cancer. I didn’t even know that existed. Cancer aside, I realized there’s so much women don’t know about women’s health and when they should go to the doctor. So I launched @KnowYourLadyParts where women can tell their stories, ask questions, and learn from experts.” “My pet peeves? RUTH MANNES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MOCA WESTPORT “I was an executive managing editor at Harper Collins… then we moved out here and I was PTA president at CMS, in Ways & Means at CES, then on the executive board at Staples and ran the Staples Players fundraising for a few years.” “I came to MoCA on February 10 and it closed midMarch. I could take a breath and learn what needed to be fixed, repaired, and strengthened. MoCA needed a good spinal cord to run well and the skeleton was really fractured.” “Appreciating and loving art has nothing to do with snobbery or existing in an Ivory tower; that’s the biggest misconception, everyone can and should participate in this endeavor.” “My husband and I started collecting in 1991. For our wedding we asked everyone to send money for a Paul Bloodgood painting.” “We lived in a 400-square foot apartment in the West Village. We’d wake up on Saturday, get a coffee, walk to Chelsea and spend the entire day walking into galleries and talking to people. It was like an intellectual endeavor: we’d research what we liked.” “We had luck in the market and developed a good eye. Christie’s and Sotheby’s started asking us to sell our work at auction.” “So this job is perfect because I have a 25-year history with the art world and I know how to curate. I know what a good show looks like and who are the important artists. I have the managerial side from all my years in publishing. I care about Westport and our community from all of my years volunteering. And I work with six amazing women.” (Photo: Kerry Long)

We looked all over for a store space then thought ‘We love Westport!’” “Our store is in Saugatuck - it’s the gateway of Westport. Our landlord’s grandfather bought the building in the 1930s.” “It was the mercantile area back in Jesup’s day. When they built the railway, Italian railroad workers were moved to Westport. Their families stayed, creating a whole immigrant community.” “We want to rebuild that Mom & Pop historic part of Westport in our small little itsy-bitsy way. We were also able to restore the Old Saugatuck Grain and Supply at 99 Franklin Street.” “We met at GFA when we were eleven. Rhonda was the new student who had moved from Austria. FROM

CALIFORNIA IN 2017, MY HUSBAND, CAMERON, AND I FULFILLED A LONGTIME DREAM OF OURS - WE BOUGHT A TRAVEL TRAILER! We’ve since taken our rig all along the east coast, from the tops of Acadia in Maine down to the Florida Keys. It’s created more room for us to enjoy the simple things like riding our bikes, sitting by campfires, and living with less. We’ve loved it -- so we decided to take a big leap: an epic three-month trip across the United States.

We packed up all the things -- work essentials, some good cookware, our best pillows, etc. -- and took off. The trip started off by heading down to Florida, where it was warm, and then west through the southern route to California. There were stops along the way, of course, including Charleston, Savannah, West Palm Beach, New Orleans, Austin, Tucson, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Zion National Park, Boulder, Santa Fe, and more. It was cool to escape the cold and a thrill to wake up to new scenery each week. The most notable challenge wasn’t finding a good wireless signal, as you might think, but finding campsites at the last minute -- it seems this kind of journey has become more popular since the pandemic. Something we’ve treasured most about this experience is arriving in California to be with our family while having everything we need right there with us, including our dogs.

Laura Waitz,

Chief Operating Officer WLM: HOW DID BANKWELL ACCOMMODATE YOUR DUAL ROLE AS PARENT AND EMPLOYEE? LAURA: I am the proud mom of two sons (30 & 28). As a single mom, my personal and professional experiences over the years through other challenging events (e.g. 9/11, Hurricane Sandy and the Nuclear Disaster & Tsunami in Japan) shaped how I wanted to treat our employees during the pandemic. WLM: HOW HAS BANKWELL CHANGED YOUR FOCUS OR ENGAGEMENT IN CHARITY WORK? LW: Bankwell has provided me more opportunity to become involved in local organizations. Dear to my heart is Filling in the Blanks which tackles food insecurity in children in our communities. I also serve on the Executive Committee and Board of Goodwill of Western & Northern Connecticut. Goodwill strengthens communities by helping people with disabilities and other disadvantages maximize independence through job training and other support services. WLM: WHAT TYPE OF CHARITY WORK DO YOU FIND MOST PERSONALLY FULFILLING? LW: Giving money is important, but investing time and expertise is much more valuable to these organizations and the people that they support; it truly is where one can add value and feel valued. WLM: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF VOLUNTEER/CHARITABLE WORK? LW: Building sustainable relationships and networking with people. WLM: WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART? LW: Wishing I had the ability to do more.

Shawn Gelin,

Senior Vice President, Director of Community Banking Operations WLM: HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT BANKWELL? SHAWN: I was one of the first employees hired and am so grateful to have been part of the journey that brought Bankwell where it is today. WLM: HOW DID BANKWELL ACCOMMODATE YOUR DUAL ROLE AS PARENT AND EMPLOYEE? SG: Bankwell has always been flexible and supportive of parents and families. I’ve chaperoned class trips, gone to concerts and sports events, and am fully supported in times of illness, emergency or childcare issues. WLM: HOW DOES BANKWELL SUPPORT AND MAINTAIN ITS LONG-TENURED EMPLOYEES? SG: Bankwell creates a supportive and rewarding environment. Employees are encouraged to explore opportunities across departments and to grow within the company. Almost all of the people that work for me came from other parts of the bank. I’m so proud to say that many of them have also been promoted! Prior to the pandemic, Bankwell regularly held outstanding quarterly events for the entire bank to be together, have fun and celebrate our collective success. I can’t wait for the day when we can all be together again.

Courtney Biernesser,

Senior Vice President, Director of Human Resources WLM: WHAT IS YOU FAVORITE PART OF VOLUNTEER/CHARITABLE WORK? COURTNEY: My favorite part of volunteering/charitable work is gaining new perspectives, which helps me focus on what’s truly important in life. WLM: WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART? CB: I think it’s sometimes hard on the person/people we may be trying to help or assist. We all have a sense of pride and it’s important to be mindful of that in others when volunteering. WLM: IF YOU COULD DO ANYTHING FOR ANYONE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? CB: My grandmother, Anna Gilly, is 97 years old and moved to New York City from Austria when she was in her late 20s, shortly after WWII. Given the pandemic, it’s a hard time to be at the end of one’s life. Even with the rollout of the vaccine, my grandmother has only recently been allowed in-person visits with family and they’re limited to 30 minute visits, six feet apart. She’s had no hugs or kisses or touching family members in close to a year. She feels isolated and alone. While we try to connect on Zoom calls, many failed due to technology issues. It would be so meaningful to create a program to help the elderly have a more positive experience to connect with family and friends while getting the physical care they need. 48

Christine Chivily,

Executive Vice President, Chief Risk & Credit Officer WLM: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS IN WHICH BANKWELL HELPED NAVIGATE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THROUGH THE PANDEMIC? CHRISTINE: The Bank was extremely concerned for the welfare, both physical and psychological, of its employees. A week prior to working remotely, our IT team made sure most employees were equipped with laptop computers. We had an all-employee test of our remote capabilities so when we had to go remote we knew we could function effectively. Our CEO hosted multiple all-staff calls during which he updated everyone on how we were moving forward through the pandemic and basically gave everyone a pep talk. We assisted employees with young and school-aged children by paying for childcare either in their homes or at day care centers. There were several ‘feel good’ deliveries to employees’ homes: packets of cloth masks, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, chargers and cords to ensure connectivity prior to one of the big storms, delivery of soup and cookies – just ways to let everyone know the management was thinking of them and grateful for the efforts being made to keep the business going smoothly.

Senior Vice President, Director of Treasury Management and Retail Sales Management

(Photo: Regina Madwed)

WLM: DID BANKWELL’S INVOLVEMENT IN PHILANTHROPY SWAY YOUR DECISION TO WORK THERE? TRISH: Yes, absolutely. My team and I have had countless opportunities to give our time and energy to wonderful charities and organizations that are doing tremendous work benefiting groups ranging from children in need to women in the workforce to the hungry. WLM: BEFORE YOU STARTED AT BANKWELL, HOW/WHERE DID YOU DO VOLUNTEER WORK? TF: I volunteered my time at the United Way and local food banks. One of the places most near and dear to me is our Portuguese school in Bridgeport. I love to volunteer my time ensuring that the next generation of Portuguese-American children learn the language and the history of where their families immigrated from, the traditions and the culture. WLM: HOW HAS BANKWELL CHANGED YOUR ENGAGEMENT IN CHARITY WORK? TF: Bankwell has helped me expand my opportunities to get involved in charitable work. In fact, it has helped me get my daughters involved and help them see how important it is to give back to the community and those less fortunate when necessary. Bankwell has provided a terrific mechanism for us to show the next generation how important it is to get involved and to share their time and resources. CityLifestyle.com/Westport

DR. TANYA FUTORYAN: HOW LASERS AND INJECTABLES CREATE A YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE

WLM: MANY YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE

SEINFELD’S

FAMOUS

“DR.

PIMPLE POPPER” EPISODE. WHAT DOES TODAY’S DERMATOLOGIST DO? DR. TANYA FUTORYAN: Dermatology has always been multifaceted. First, there’s the medical side of it, dealing with skin cancer detection and treatment. We also treat rashes, acne and rosacea -the adult form of acne - and we still “pop” or inject pimples with anti-inflammatory medicine to quickly shrink them. Then

there’s

LASER

dermatology.

Lasers use light to treat a specific target molecule, such as oxyhemoglobin in redness and broken capillaries, melanin in brown spots, or water in dermal collagen. Laser light will produce heat and improvement of target tissue. I believe in treating specific issues in the skin with lasers because of their specificity and precision with little to no collateral damage. In addition, there’s the aesthetic anti-aging field of dermatology which addresses

WLM: THERE ARE SPFS UP TO 100 AND MORE. WHAT’S THE MOST EFFECTIVE SPF AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD ONE APPLY IT? TF: Apply the highest SPF your skin will tolerate. I advise patients to use physical sunscreens such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide. These reflect all UV light off the surface of the skin much like a mirror does. They don’t absorb any of the light. For that reason, physical sunscreens are safer for kids and adults and provide better UV protection because they reflect/ screen out all rays. WLM: DON’T THEY MAKE YOUR FACE WHITE? TF: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are naturally chalky white and can appear white on the skin. However, sunscreen manufacturers have made the particle size smaller and therefore less noticeable on the skin. Some of the formulations also come tinted. You’ll need to try out a few sunblocks to see which one looks best and is easiest to use. WLM: HOW OFTEN DO WE APPLY THE SUNSCREEN? TF: If you’re going to work for the day, apply sunscreen in the morning. If you’re outdoors doing activities and sweating, you’ll have to reapply every 4 hours or as indicated on sunscreen packaging. The rule of thumb is, if you’re not tanning, then your sunscreen is working well. If you’re tanning or turning red, it’s not. CityLifestyle.com/Westport

There’s so much to know, in fact, many women take the course twice. One woman insisted her son and husband watch the legal presentations. Another used her newfound knowledge of finance to discover $10,000 in a pension. Most are simply grateful to learn about stuff they didn’t know, but should, in a safe, supportive environment. Finance and legal tend to be intrinsically entwined, one tipping off the point of another. While many woman may be money or law experts, their familial responsibilities tend to supersede their professional ones. “I’m amazed that women can do multimillion dollar deals for clients but put their own needs last,” says Galia. Which is where Michelle fits in. “One of the biggest questions I get is ‘How do I manage anxiety while discussing and managing finances?’” I imagine the answer could be “knock back a few margs and buy aspirational jewelry online while enjoying a roaring fire made of absconded Duraflame logs and unpaid bills.” But, heck, I haven’t taken the course yet.
