Spring has Sprung SPRING IS HERE! It’s a time of renewal and, thankfully, warmer weather. This month’s issue is all about this much-anticipated season: spring cleaning, style ideas, a fresh new salon and, of course, gardening! If you have a lot of time to take on a new project, you could try starting a vegetable garden, a rose garden or an herb garden in your yard. If you just have one or two types of veggies you want to grow, maybe you try container gardening on your

patio or porch. It’s definitely the time to start thinking about the perennials you want to plant and if there’s any room in your yard for some new trees. Maybe you even try growing some fruit this year! And don’t forget about our bee friends who need our help to keep thriving. Consider planting some flowers that are extra helpful for our pollinators who work so hard. Another way to get into gardening is to contribute to local community gardens or donate to organizations that are planting more trees in town. Flip through this month’s issue to find even more ways you can contribute to the environment this April.

CHATTING WITH A LARGE-SCALE ART ADVISOR
ONE OF THE BEST SITES IN WESTPORT IS, WELL, WAS ON BEACHSIDE AVENUE. The Heymans installed a whimsical and wonderful Claes Oldenburg/ Coosje van Bruggen sculpture, Typewriter Eraser, Scale X, on their property, within easy eyeshot of passers-by. Seeing art, especially large art, in the elements is an unexpected treat. Over-sized sculpture is at once fun, thoughtful, and intriguing… as long as it’s not a bear carved with a chainsaw. Weston’s Cheryl Sokolow, Principal of C-Fine Art and founder of the popular UNCOMMON GROUND series in Bridgehampton, is one of the few area sculpture Art Advisors. Although she sells sculpture of all sizes, it’s her large-scale environmental works we find most intriguing. WLM: WHAT ARE PEOPLE LOOKING FOR IN OUTDOOR SCULPTURE? CHERYL SOKOLOW: People are looking for organic bronze large-scale, but the material depends on the location and their unique environment. Kevin Barrett is my most popular sculptor and quintessential in terms of what I look for in an artist. When choosing a work, consider what’s the best scale, where you want to see it in the yard, and what materials you like. WLM: HOW MUCH DOES OUTDOOR SCULPTURE COST? CS: Prices vary and are determined by size, material and complexity. WLM: I NOTICED YOU REPRESENT AN ISOBEL FOLB SOKOLOW. ANY RELATION? CS: She’s my late mother. When I was young she was more of a “traditional” mom and as we got older she took her work more seriously. She grew

personally with her work; feminism became a theme and also something she lived. She was a pioneer - few women were welding or creating large scale works at that time. WLM: INTERESTING THAT YOU HAVE A CLASSICAL BACKGROUND, YET YOUR SCULPTURES APPEAR CONTEMPORARY. CS: They are classical in that they can be appreciated by principles of form such as balance, harmony, and manipulation of material. Many of today’s artists are working more conceptually and attempt to amuse or illicit a specific narrative, while I champion the actual physicality of the work and its execution. WLM: HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH ARTISTS TO REPRESENT? CS: I work with artists who have mastered their medium. I’m also on the lookout for contemporary female sculptors, but unfortunately I don’t see many creating large scale outdoor work within this genre. Also, the artist must have work in one or more museum collections and be internationally exhibited.
Cheryl Sokolow, principal C-Fine Art. Artwork: Norman Mooney, Kevin Barrett
WLM: YOUR BIG, FABULOUS EVENT IS UNCOMMON GROUNDS. WHAT IS IT? CS: I partner with Peconic Land Trust to exhibit large scale sculpture in The Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton NY. It’s an interesting way for the community to engage with the work. The UNCOMMON GROUND Sculpture Series began in 2010 and is now part of the Hampton’s cultural programming. It takes a few days to install [in June], and this season it will be up through the year with some exciting programming such as music and guest speakers. Covid regulations permitting, we plan to have artist talks and I’ll speak as the Curator. A portion of the artwork sales is donated to PLT. WLM: HAVE YOU SEEN THE CLAES OLDENBURG STATUE OF THE TYPEWRITER ERASER? CS: No! I haven’t! Where is it? WLM: On Beachside Avenue! Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Cheryl will have to go Florida to see Typewriter Eraser, Scale X. In 2019 the Heymans sent it to a museum in West Palm Beach. A belated thank you to them for generously placing it near the road so all could enjoy! C-FineArt.com 28

great for the kids. Each room has a private balcony overlooking the gorgeous grounds, pools and lakes on the property. The kids loved getting comfy each night in provided mini bath robes and waving good night to the parks, visible from our balcony.
“Lead with Care”
Working with the expert advice and guidance of Johns Hopkins Medicine International, the “Lead with Care” initiative combines the Four Seasons’ already high level of service with enhanced procedures to protect guests and employees at all of their properties, to ensure their health and safety.
THE FUN Disney’s great, but the resort is an amazing destination on its own. There’s an “Explorer Island” with a family pool, lazy river, water slides and splash pad. The expansive family pool has an infinity edge to complement the natural beauty of the neighboring lake. It’s gradual sloping entrance enabled our four-year old, who’s not the best swimmer, to splash and play in sight of our lounge chairs like she would back home on Compo Beach. The two waterslides are waterpark-worthy, offering 242 feet of twists and turns. You can float in the lazy river and cool off under some of the waterfalls along the way. Our kids loved the splash pad and running through the timed fountains, all integrated into the overall design evoking an old ruinous mansion. For kids 4-12, a complimentary Kids For All Seasons camp offers fun activities. If your kids are a bit older or you’re waiting out some rain, The Hideout offers billiards and some of the latest video games in a supervised and sanitized setting.
Travel with Your Pod Squad
Traveling with your extended family or your quarantine crew? Here’s a crazy-luxurious option: the stunning nine-room Royal Suite. MAKING UP FOR LOST TRAVEL (CONTINUED) While the kids are busy, parents can swim in the stately “adults-only” quiet pool. SPA & FITNESS The spa offers plenty of indoor and outdoor options and a long list of services. In addition to massages and facials, The Spa offers unique treatments like the Vibrational Sound Therapy and innovative IV Vitality Drip therapies. The fitness center, like the rest of the resort, is spotless and exquisitely maintained. After another infrared temperature check, use state-of-the-art machines or log on to a Peloton to maintain your home routine. An attendant routinely sanitizes the area and equipment. GOLF AND TENNIS Designed by Tom Fazio, their 18-hole golf course was home to the 2021 LPGA Tour. The fairways and greens are also a Certified Audubon Sanctuary, home to a wide range of Florida wildlife. The course also boats a 16-acre practice facility with TrackMan video swing analysis, a putting green, and short course. If tennis is your game, there are three courts available. Take lessons from an on-site pro, join a daily clinic, or chalCharacter Breakfast with Goofy
lenge someone to a match. DINING The restaurants are, of course, exceptional. Lickety Split was our stop each morning for coffee and healthy grab-and-go options. The homemade gelato is a kid favorite. Ravello provides a full breakfast option and regional Italian cuisine in the evenings. The menu offers an adventurous take on staple dishes as well as seasonal offerings highlighting local ingredients. PB&G is poolside and offers some classics and interesting alternatives. My wife and I sampled a little of everything, but she came back to the Chirashi Bowl for the fresh, sushi-grade tuna and salmon. I was not expecting Bulgogi Naan to be a poolside option, but I’ll be dreaming about it for weeks. Plancha is the spot for a bite with fellow golfers after 9 or 18, with golf club favorites as well as Cuban fare. Finally, rooftop steakhouse Capa is one of the Best 100 Wine Restaurants in the US by Wine Enthusiast magazine. We indulged in tapas followed up with arguably the best steak I’ve ever eaten. Staying at The Four Seasons Orlando at the Walt Disney World Resort was truly a special experience and the ideal way to spend our first vacation in over a year. It was easy, fun, and way more luxurious than another week at home.

Plant the easy stuff - tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots. Plant seedlings for the tomatoes, use seeds for the cukes and carrots because they don’t enjoy being transferred. Water almost every day and pull the weeds. If you’re still into it, step 3.

STEP 3: Now it gets serious. Consider a larger plot with a professional fence that begins 2-3 beneath the ground (hungry rodents are crafty diggers) and a mesh covering to keep out birds. GEEK OUT ON GARDENING (CONTINUED)
Start with small raised beds. 54
Westport Lifestyle | April 2021
+ Buy seedlings early. If you wait until Memorial Day to shop for seedlings, it’ll be slim pickings. Buy them early May and baby them in your house. WHEN TO PLANT WHAT: + Stick pea seeds or snow peas in the soil around St. Patrick’s Day and they’ll grow early spring. + Plant seedlings between Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, after the last frost. + Harvest in July. + When your July plants are unbearable to look at, tear them out and compost. Then plant beans, green beans, radishes, root vegetables - they’ll stay good through November/December. WHERE TO PLANT WHAT: + Plant small plants vs. tallest plants based on where the sun hits the soil. + Plant carrots and radishes on the perimeter of the bed because they grow vertical and don’t require a lot of space. + In the interior, plant shishito and jalapeño peppers with lettuce in between. The hot peppers ward of lettuce-eating bugs and provides valuable shade. (Underplant any tall plants with lettuce for shade). + Kale, cabbage, and brussel sprouts are loved by every pest in the world, so mix up the plantings. SPEAKING OF PESTS: + Bugs don’t like smelly/spicy things, so mix up your peppers and herbs with your kale, tomatoes, and cabbages. + Marigolds! Bugs hate them. Plant them in between plants and around the perimeter. + I sprinkle crushed egg shells around leafy greens (lettuce, kale) because snails don’t like the sharp edges. + No chemical spraying! Use Neem Oil or a homemade brew of water, hot peppers, garlic, and dish detergent. SPECIAL WORD ON GARLIC - MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!: + Plant garlic in the fall, then don’t do anything until you harvest in mid-July.

The Skinny on Fat Reduction
Dr . R
ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG
COOLSCULPT FOR UNWANTED ADIPOSE
BODY FAT IS LIKE HAIR. We don’t mind it in the right place, but stick a bunch of it where it doesn’t belong and, well, it becomes our life mission to annihilate it. Fortunately, annihilating unwanted fat is pretty quick and easy nowadays. We can freeze it, melt it, inject it, and probably some other things. But what actually works? For example, I’m at a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat reasonably well, and my inner thighs refused to understand why this should affect them. I asked Dr. Rhonda Klein of Modern Dermatology how to get rid of the monsters. She recommended CoolSculpt. CoolSculpt minimizes fat on thighs, abdomen, flanks, chin, arms, inner and outer thighs, back, bra and banana roll. Not all at once, but you probably guessed that. Each area is treated individually and most times a series of treatments are recommended for optimal results. The best candidates are those who are at a healthy weight, eat a decent diet, and are fit but still can’t shake tenacious areas of fat. HOW DOES IT WORK? CoolSculpt
freezes

and
perma-
nently destroys them, reducing the size of whatever area is targeted. Over time your body naturally eliminates these dead fat cells. The technical term for this is “cryolipolysis” which is difficult to spell and almost impossible to say. You’ll enjoy the slimming results as long as your weight remains stable. If you gain weight, the remaining fat cells will increase in size and you’ll notice you’re bulking back up in the treated area as well as elsewhere on your body. 58

A Chemical-Free Home
DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.
