Hello Westminster Friends, This past year, we have heard a lot about how men have caused impact on their families, communities, and countries. In some circles, you have heard stories about heroes. In other stories, painful details have come from people's lives about abuse. Concepts like toxic masculinity enter our awareness and lexicon. And on late evenings in corners of our community that we may not see, some men meet regularly to explore what it means to improve themselves with a therapist; some strategize with their faith community how to serve with compassion. Others practice flash cards with their fourth grader. And somewhere, a man is listening supportively while his partner shares about having a hard day. In this issue of Westminster City Lifestyle, we hope to lift you up by sharing stories of men in the community who are serving in their own unique and gifted ways. Through their examples, I hope to convey how we men can grow through our failings and weaknesses, excel in our strengths, and perhaps - through the stories we leave in the present and as our legacy - be and become men to look up to. We Review Six Amazing Flavors From Three Local Brewers Beer lovers can be thankful for two things: that it’s 2022, and that we live in Colorado. The past couple of decades, the corresponding explosion of microbreweries and community brew houses has been wonderful for those of us who enjoy unique beer flavors and experiences. Beer masters have invested in creating fun and welcoming gathering spaces for us to enjoy connecting with friends and loved ones. And, of course, savoring the flavorful talents and gifts they pour out glass by glass every day. In Westminster and the surrounding northwest Denver suburbs, there is no shortage of breweries for you to enjoy. Here, we share with you six wonderful featured brews by three area breweries.

Exploring One Of Westminster’s Favorite Places To Unwind

When the urge strikes to put the work day in a box and walk away from it, and then pull together a group of your favorite coworkers for a few drinks after work, what do you prioritize? Finding a place close to the office - or, close to home? TVs to watch the game of the day? Happy hour? Great food? So many things to consider! When we asked a few Westy guys for some suggestions, one strong recommendation came forward. Ryan Nyberg, general manager of RoofTec Precision Exteriors, stepped up and offered to show us all there is to enjoy about one of his favorite places to unwind with coworkers and friends. So, we stopped in recently over lunch. Ryan takes over the story here: 30/70 Sports Bar is a great spot to hang out after work or on the weekends. They have a lot of different games you can play, from the typical pool and darts, to a full-on golf simulator! With a kitchen that is open all night, it makes for a very fun time. On those sunny days, the rooftop patio is a great spot to hang out to enjoy a drink or get some food. My favorites for food are the smoking steak nachos, the Hawaiian roll sliders and the jalapeno BBQ bacon burger. Finishing the meal with some deep fried oreos

with ice cream is the icing on the cake! I have yet to have a bad meal here. When I hang out here, I usually am with co-workers or other friends. We normally reserve a golf simulator and then grab a pitcher of beer and a few appetizers. As the night goes on, whoever finishes with the worst golf score ends up buying the last round. Sometimes when it’s too busy for golf, we hang out on the rooftop patio and soak up the sun or jump on a pool table or dart board. Overall, 30/70 Sports Bar is my go to spot to hang out with the boys after work or get out of the house on a nice day. The atmosphere is great! The service is always on point and the food and drink selection is easy for everyone to get what they want. They have a ton of TVs so it is easy to catch a game. As Ryan shared, great food and drinks can be enjoyed with pals in a lot of different settings. The rooftop patio and golf simulators really set 30/70 Sports Bar apart as a place to shed the stress of the work day with coworkers, friends, or that special someone. And with its location at 120th and Tejon, your next happy hour is close to everything in Westminster.

LIVING, THROUGH GIVING HOW A WESTMINSTER DAD HONORS HIS SON’S MEMORY

April 4, 2018 was a day no parent wants to experience. On this day John Capra checked Facebook and saw a notification from his son’s college that started a feeling of concern. There had been an accident on campus. John’s son Zack, just 25 years old, was already a veteran of the U.S. Navy with two tours of the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Harry S. Truman under his belt. His Navy service had set him up to enroll at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida to earn his bachelor’s degree and a pilot’s license to fly commercial airplanes. As this day went on, John texted Zack’s phone and got no response. Later in the evening, a phone call came to John with the heartbreaking

confirmation of his worst fears - Zack’s plane had crashed. He was completing his final check ride with an FAA examiner named John Azma when one of the wings separated from the plane in midair. Both Zack and the examiner died as the plane crashed in a field across from the airport. Though John, his wife Patsy, and their 4 other adult-aged children were beginning to process the grief of losing Zack, they were also learning about the impact he left behind. “We were getting calls and texts from people nonstop for days,” Patsy describing how Zack touched people’s lives. While they were on campus after Zack’s death, they met many groups and individual students who offered support, and shared his best attributes - how his compassion, hard work ethic, and family-focus rubbed off on them. One of his fellow students named Alyssa shared that she had to take a couple semesters off from college because she couldn’t afford tuition. That conversation planted the first seed of the concept which would become Tailwinds of Hope. “We cannot let Zack’s dream die,” John shared. Out of their grief, and with an outpouring of support that came from people around the family, John and Patsy decided they would keep Zack’s life and memory alive through other students. As Tailwinds of Hope was born, the foundation would exist to help students achieve their life goals and dreams through their college education via annual scholarship awards. Its name would signify how hope carries you forward from grief. After just three years, Tailwinds of Hope has grown to being able to offer five significant scholarships every year. The largest is a $15,000 scholarship for a student enrolled at Embry Riddle. Four other $2,500 scholarships are also awarded, including one for Mountain Range High School students, aspiring tech school students, and a football scholarship to Adams State University, John’s alma mater. Tailwinds of Hope’s biggest annual fundraising event is the Captain Caps Golf Tournament. Set this year in August at the Greg Mastronia Golf Courses at Hyland Hills, John and Patsy hope to aim higher than last year’s incredible event. The 2021 Tournament had over 200 golfers participating to help raise over $32,000. This year, thanks to ongoing generous donations, the Embry Riddle scholarship will be fully endowed! Going to bed shivering with an empty stomach taught me the importance of rent and food security. Starting my own businesses and working my way up the corporate ladder across healthcare, transportation, real estate and technology, taught me the importance of financial independence and entrepreneurship. My work at City Council is aligned with my passion in life, which is to provide working families access to the tools and services they need to rebuild, be healthy, and feel safe. It can either fuel or motivate you to do something productive, or it can be self-destructive.

WHAT IS A MOMENT OR TWO THAT YOU KNOW SET YOU UP ON YOUR PATH IN INSURANCE AND SERVING THE CITY OF WESTMINSTER? Prior to insurance, I worked in the bar and restaurant business, which was good for making a living, but not a stable career for a husband and father of young kids at the time. As for my place on the City Council, people I trusted greatly had a great deal of confidence in me and my work in serving on other boards. The late Bob Briggs had asked me to be a part of re-forming the Westminster Chamber of Commerce. I was grateful to be there when Chamber President Juliet Abdel was hired. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? I have a passion for meeting people, and in this career path, that’s part of everything I do. A handshake, hug, pat on the back- I consider myself an extrovert. That all works really well for my work. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? A sales or marketing manager, or engagement manager. I could also see myself doing person-to-person PR work for a personality or brand, to grow their community outreach. WHAT DO YOU DO TO BALANCE YOUR LIFE? HOW DO DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM WORK? My family is my core. My grandkids are just amazing. When I’m with them, I don’t worry about anything else. Exercise and my health getting out on my bike really puts me in another place. And my faith, I have a strong faith. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU? Seeing how compassion is so impactful to others, being able to express it - it isn’t as hard as people think. A smile, a hug, a handshake - are worth all the gold. And I’m surprised, shocked really, how little of that seems to be going around right now. I want to live by my compassion and especially the little things that no one sees.

WHAT IS A MOMENT OR TWO THAT YOU KNOW SET YOU UP ON YOUR PATH AS A BUSINESS OWNER, AND SPECIFICALLY IN AUTO REPAIR? While I have always been on a path to eventually become my own business owner, I believe that my own experiences with automotive repair led me to the industry. Since I was young, I never felt welcome when getting my vehicles serviced. I want our customers to be comfortable and know that we are here to walk them through the process, educate and inform them to the best decision that fits their needs, not mine. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? My passion in life has always been the acquisition of knowledge. After college, I achieved this while working in the finance and insurance industries, learning as much as I could about my clients’ businesses. Joining the auto industry, I continue that pursuit, learning new things every day. Now that I am older, I am finding that imparting my knowledge of this industry and others has led me to a purpose I never knew I would enjoy. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I would probably go into community politics. I enjoy working directly with my community on

HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM WORK? I enjoy spending time with my family. Sunday night dinners with my sister, game nights, or simply lounging on the couch catching up with the latest Netflix craze. I enjoy reading and true crime podcasts. Unwinding with friends over a few drinks and some few rounds of darts at the local tavern. DESCRIBE AN EXPERIENCE IN YOUR LIFE THAT CHANGED YOUR VALUES. The day I went into remission from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Prior to my cancer diagnosis in my early twenties, I had a singular focus that my success was defined as how much money I could make and the things I could buy. When I was told at that point that I had cancer, it was not only an awakening for me, but a complete realization that success wasn’t dependent on material things, but the people in your life that you could share them with. After I went into remission, I have surrounded myself with family and friends to share my successes and work diligently to make their lives better, and not just my own.

WHAT IS A MOMENT OR TWO THAT YOU KNOW SET YOU UP ON YOUR PATH TO BE PART OF TATTERED COVER? In high school classes including speech and debate, I connected with people who were really amazing. That’s what Tattered Cover represents, connecting people with literature that can change their lives. Also- when the business was at insolvency, and the question was being asked - will Tattered Cover close? The opportunity to continue the book store and the tradition, that was my moment of - we’ve got to do this. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? I really want to champion businesses that are doing the right thing in the community. Local businesses are here for their community, investing in employees who invest in the local community. That’s totally aligned with what I understand and want in business. My vision for Tattered Cover, as we succeed, there’ll be a new generation of people who look at a business like ours, and go out and do that, too. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I think I’d probably try to play for the Broncos, that’d be number one! (Laughs.) It’s funny, I’ve only broken one bone in my life, it was my thumb, during a flag football game in middle school. I don’t think I’m made for football. I am an avid Denver Broncos fan. I think I might make a good offensive coordinator though- I love the strategy of sports. I’m fascinated by planning out how to win. WHAT DO YOU DO TO BALANCE YOUR LIFE? HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM WORK? Swimming. I try to swim 5 to 6 days a week for about 55 minutes. I can’t quite describe it- when you’re swimming, it’s a great time to clear your head, get endorphins. And when I swim, I try to think positively about the future. WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU RECENTLY LEARNED THAT SURPRISED YOU? I wouldn’t say it surprised me, but something that impressed upon me during the pandemic, is the importance of retail workers. Our businesses, like book stores, restaurants, etc - they helped us try to achieve some normalcy. And in the process, the folks coming in every day were risking their lives. And seeing that really really moved me- filled me with admiration for what they did. And I want to see them keep getting celebrated.
