LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Wholehearted Approach to Wellness The new workout regime and gym membership, the strict diet and juice cleanse, the stack of self-help and leadership books, the events with which to fill your calendar… When we think of the messages of “wellness” that bombard us at the first of a New Year, we might start to feel guilty over how we think we fell short the year before. Or we may stress ourselves out obsessing about all the things we want to change about ourselves in the here and now. As we take a breath and look ahead to 2022, can we all agree that things aren’t back to “normal” yet? What if we resolve to create a new normal this year? A “whole” new normal. That’s why we decided to qualify the idea of “wellness” in this issue to include much more than the traditional workout/diet/makeover mentality. We’re looking at wellness through a lens of wholeness. Best-selling author, speaker, and researcher Dr. Brené Brown says, “Whole-hearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness, It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think- No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.” The stories, people, and places featured here are about living whole-heartedly. There’s realtor Maggie Fast who uses her career to support her passion for taking care of rescue dogs. And Amanda and Jeremy Weber, the brother and sister gym-owners and trainer team, who have created the kind of space where empowerment and encouragement abound. A thread running through this issue’s stories is how what we do for others benefits ourselves. Mayo Clinic research affirms volunteering’s contributions to holistic health, especially for older adults. It improves physical and mental health, provides a sense of purpose and teaches valuable skills, and nurtures new and existing relationships. As you read along, possibly you find yourself thinking about the ways you want to show up as a whole person this year - for yourself, your family, and your community. Whether you are working on strengthening your body, fine-tuning your career to make best use of your gifts, or volunteering your time to help others live their best whole lives, hopefully there will be a story inside to inspire you to show up as your whole self in 2022. Happy Wholehearted New Year,

BEING YOUR BEST SELF I N YO U R R E L AT I O N S H I P ARTICLE BY AARON ANDERSON

Relationships are critically important to us as human beings. Especially during the pandemic, we realized how much we need good relationships in our lives (emphasis on good). And no one is more important to us than our life partner. On the flip side of that coin, we need to be a good life partner, too (emphasis on good). It’s a two-way street. If we rely on our spouse to be good for us, but we don’t try to be good for them, it becomes a very one-sided relationship where tension and resentment can build. As a marriage counselor, I see many ways that people aren’t being their best selves in their relationships. There are two specific issues that I see most clients really struggle with: 1) being better than you were yesterday, and 2) showing up for your partner how they need it.

Being Better Than You Were Yesterday Being your best self in your relationship means you’re showing up better than you did yesterday. Not just for yourself, but also for your partner. Relationships stretch us. They give us a mirror into ourselves about not just how we see ourselves, but how others see us, too. There’s a saying in my field as a marriage counselor that goes like this: “I’m not just who I think I am, I’m also who you think I am.” Being your best self in your relationship means you’re listening for feedback from your partner and trying to integrate it into bettering yourself. So think about what feedback you’ve heard from your partner. Try to find the nugget of truth in this feedback, and go to work on self-improvement.

12

M EN TA L WE LLBE IN G | W E LLNE S S

Showing Up How Your Partner Needs Being your best self in your relationship also means showing up for your partner in the way they need it. You can’t help the way you were raised. Maybe you were raised in a loving family where affection was abundant. Or maybe you were raised in a family that avoided conflict. No matter how you were raised, it had its strengths and weaknesses. If you were raised in an affectionate family, for example, maybe you have a hard time connecting with people who are more closed-off or guarded. Or if you were raised in an avoidant family, maybe you have a hard time showing affection. Regardless, being better for your relationship isn’t about how you were raised, but how your partner was raised – and trying to show up for them in the way they need it. It's always a good time to take a deep dive into yourself and see how you can bring your best self into your relationship. When you think of your of New Year resolutions, maybe what you want to work on isn't only about what would be good for you, but also about what would be good for your partner and your relationship. Aaron Anderson is an LMFT and has an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy. He and his wife Becky Anderson own The Marriage and Family Clinic in Westminster.

Relationships stretch us. They give us a mirror into ourselves about not just how we see ourselves, but how others see us, too.

SERVING SMILES AND HOPE A PORTRAIT OF VOLUNTEERING AT DENVER RESCUE MISSION

14

G IV IN G BAC K | LOCAL SERVI CE S

Riding through the city of Denver on his bike, Ray Lubinski hears his name from a distance. He turns his head to see the smiling guest that regularly goes to Denver Rescue Mission’s Lawrence Street Community Center (LSCC) waving at him. Ray hasn’t been in Denver that long, but here he is getting recognized and running into familiar faces as he rides down the city streets. The interaction has left his morning even brighter and a cheesy grin spreads across Ray’s face as he steps on the pedal and bikes to his next volunteer shift at the Mission.

R AY LUBINSKI

Once Ray arrives at the Mission’s volunteer room, he is greeted by the warmth and comfort of what he considers to be his second home. He begins putting on his volunteer “uniform”— or as the Mission volunteer team likes to call it an apron, gloves and a hairnet. He is suited up and ready to change lives. His shift includes everything from cutting fruits and veggies, separating plates and cups to serving the guests meals directly. All of which seem like simple and everyday tasks, but to the Mission’s guests are extraordinary acts of kindness. Once a truck driver traveling around the greater United States, Ray is now a man with a great passion to serve those in his local community and has been doing so for just over a year at the Mission. “Especially during the pandemic, our guests needed us more,” Ray said. “Our guests are why we are here.” When speaking about the people Ray serves and volunteers with, you would think he has spent his whole life with them; he has so much to share about the people he spends so many of his days with. “They're not just people, they become friends, family. We share funerals, weddings, cheers, smiles, grandchildren’s pictures, anything going on that you would do as a friend,” he explains. One of the guests who feels the sense of community that Ray so perfectly articulates is Patricia, who has been utilizing the Mission’s services since March 2021. Her face lights up as she shares more about the staff and volunteers who greet her as she walks through the doors each day and refer to her as “The Queen”. Patricia has been able to get hot meals from volunteers, like Ray, during her stay. “The more I am here the more love I feel from people,” Patricia said. Patricia isn’t unique in her situation of feeling loved and cared for through the Mission’s volunteers. In fact, the Mission was able to serve more than 815,500 meals last year with the help of volunteers like Ray. It doesn’t come as a surprise with hearts like Ray’s that the Mission’s mottos is “hope starts with a meal.”

Ray’s experience at the Mission has been nothing short of positive and has allowed him to find meaningful work during his retirement, develop lasting relationships in a new city and serve a kind population that is in great need. “[Denver Rescue Mission serves the community] 7 days a week. 18 hours a day, 365 or 366 days a year on leap year. There isn't a day or a meal that we're not serving somebody,” Ray said. There are so many different volunteer opportunities that range from serving meals to tutoring kids in our youth program, from long-term to short-term, it’s all about what works for you and your schedule. To learn more about all the Mission’s volunteer opportunities head to DenverRescueMission. org/Volunteer.

HOW A LOCAL REALTOR SHOWS UP FOR OUR FURRY FRIENDS

ARTICLE BY CATHI COOPER-FEEHAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOB MARTINEZ

Fresh out of high school with her own place to live and an insatiable affection for corgis, Maggie Fast showed up at the shelter to adopt her first dog. She meant to go and simply select her corgi, but the way she tells the story is that something strange happened next. She uncontrollably blurted out to the shelter volunteer, “If you had to pick one dog that’s the least likely to be adopted, which one would it be?” That was Kodee. A golden retriever/husky mix, Kodee had been returned to the shelter 9 times for behavioral issues. “I didn’t know what I was thinking,” says Maggie, “I was just a kid. But I did it. I had committed to helping that dog have a good life.” Ever since adopting Kodee, Maggie has been on a path to helping dogs have good lives. A realtor with West + Main Homes, her motto is “Sell Homes, Save Dogs.” Maggie has always been the go-to dog-person among her friends and colleagues. Everybody knows that if you have a question about dogs - adopting them, training them, rescuing them, or caring for them she’s your person. After college in 2008, Maggie started working at PetSmart. Originally, she really just wanted the dog food discount, but her passion for dogs led her to work up to dog trainer. From there, she started volunteering for rescues. As a trainer, Maggie found it frustrating to watch good dogs get rehomed for generally solvable behavioral issues. These frustrating training experiences added to her desire to save dogs, to help them find the good homes where they could thrive. “I’ve always been obsessed with dogs,” says Maggie, “and when I became a realtor, I knew that I wanted to give back, and I knew I could use my business as a vehicle to help rescues. I also knew that having a career in real estate would allow me the flexibility to do that.” Maggie CONTINUED >

does rescue transports, plans events, and helps with fundraising. “To top it all off,” she says, “because we’re not crazy enough, we also foster.” In total, Maggie and her husband Josh have fostered 28 dogs. Local rescue organizations that are dear to Maggie’s heart include Taysia Blue Rescue, Do Over Dogs, and Lola’s Rescue. There were some years when fostering wasn’t possible, though. Kodee, the accidental rescue, was by Maggie’s side for 13 years, living to be almost 20. During his last few years, Maggie didn’t foster for his health and safety. On October 28, 2020, Kodee passed away. After taking time to grieve the loss, in January 2021, Maggie decided it was time to start fostering again. That’s when they began working closely with Taysia Blue Rescue, a national organization for rescuing Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. That’s where she got to know Mikala Wacker, the lead for the Colorado Taysia Blue team. As soon as Maggie met Mikala, the two clicked as friends. All the beautiful huskies (and the fluffy malamute) gracing the pages of this story belong to Mikala and her husband Jeremy. Sometimes people ask Maggie, “Why huskies?” One of her favorite things about the breed is their independent spirit. She says of Kodee, “He was very much set in his ways. He reminded me of myself in a sense-don’t change for anyone, be your true self in your truest form.” Huskies are generally considered one of the more difficult breeds to train, which is another thing she has always really liked about them: the challenge! It’s impossible to miss: when you meet Maggie, you encounter her giving and caring spirit. A spirit shaped by a willingness to follow your love where it leads you. And in Maggie’s example, her love for these gentle beasts continues to be a driving force in her life, spilling over into the world around her.

EMPOWERMENT AND ENCOURAGEMENT That’s the Empire Fitness State of Mind

ARTICLE BY CATHI COOPER-FEEHAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOB MARTINEZ

Lakeisha Butler had been working out with Amanda and Jeremy Weber, sister and brother owners of Empire Fitness, for a while when one day she felt strangely sick. Heat rose up inside of her, and she felt nauseated, as if she might pass out. She soon realized it was perimenopause. With her trainers’ help, Lakeisha changed her workout, adding more and changing things up. Her hot flashes are now “just a whisper.” She feels stronger than ever, and she turns 50 later this year. This story is one of the many successes coming out of Empire Fitness since they opened their doors four years ago. They specialize in training individuals and families with a theme of empowerment and education. The Empire Fitness philosophy is about giving your body a chance to do more than you were giving it credit for. The Webers encourage their clients to expand their capabilities in the gym, so that they can expand their lives, career, relationships, mental health, and more! “Your body wants to move. Your body wants to be strong,” Amanda says. The Empire trainers insist on consistent hard work and no excuses, and in turn, they will give you all they’ve got. “It’s a team effort when you hire me and Amanda. We are invested in your results.” CONTINUED >

The Power of Showing Up by Daniel Siegel When seeking to better understand your child and learning to parent move effectively, you can’t go wrong reading anything by Daniel Siegel. Seigel and Bryson do an excellent job explaining what your children need (spoiler alert: YOU!) and how this critical work is needed to wire their brains for success. This book is a guide to doing one of the most essential things when it comes to raising well-adjusted children – being fully present for them. From providing a safe haven to helping cope with life’s hurdles, parents and caregivers can learn how to build strong bonds with their children that will encourage them to feel confident and secure as they step out into the world.

What Happened to You by Dr. Bruce Perry This book is fantastic to have as a hard copy, but consider the audio book to hear the soothing voices of Dr. Bruce Perry and the ever-so-familar voice of Oprah Winfrey. This back and forth conversation between the two share some of the most up to date understandings of trauma and how what’s happened in our lives is foundational to who we are today, and also gives us the tools we need to survive and then grow. By understanding trauma as both a brain issue and a societal issue, we can start to support trauma survivors with the tools they need to heal.

The Boy with Big, Big Feelings by Britney Winn Lee All children have big, big feelings at times. Recommended for 4-8 year olds, but we think this book is good for kids of all ages and even adults! This book does a lovely job articulating that big feelings happen for everyone and they’re okay, whether they feel good, bad or complicated; giving them voice rather than stuffing them is very important to do. Beautifully illustrated and written in rhyming verse, children and adults explore the whole spectrum of feelings and readers navigate the emotional challenges they face throughout the day.

Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn Jon Kabat-Zinn is a master, with many valuable works to explore. Wherever You Go, There You Are is one of his classics, and a great read for anyone new to mindfulness and meditation, as well as a valuable reference for those who are experienced and possibly even guiding others through a practice of their own. By providing step-by-step meditation practices, both formal and informal, that can easily be incorporated into everyday life, Kabat-Zinn steers us toward the peace and tranquility that we’re yearning for.

BOWSER, THE OFFICE MASCOT OF NOOR FAMILY DENTISTRY

Getting up to face a new day after a sleepless night can leave you feeling exhausted. You might wonder or worry whether you will have enough physical and mental energy to make it through the day. But what if those sleepless nights become more frequent? Or even, routine? Doctor Erada Noor, owner and dentist at Noor Family Dentistry, sees dental care as a focal point for your whole body’s health. Sometimes, people can easily forget how important the connection is between our teeth and our whole body. Dr. Noor sees that cause-and-effect relationship pretty directly. “A lot of times, when a patient has a lot of dental issues, they also have a lot of medical issues. They go hand in hand.” And, conversely, when a patient comes in with a clean medical history, their teeth tend to tell that story, too. Dr. Noor can help a patient identify the specific intersections of dental health and other health needs, coordinating diagnosis and care with doctors in other fields.

Sleep apnea is one disorder which can be impacted by dental health. Teeth clenching and grinding can point to poor jaw alignment, which can lead to breathing problems when you’re trying to sleep. In her care, Dr. Noor’s collaborative approach can often result in a patient landing on an effective treatment much sooner. Whether you consider a New Year’s resolution for your health or not, Dr. Noor suggests starting small with new changes and building on them over time. If you want to build a habit of brushing twice per day, start with once. Keep it consistent. Then, add another daily instance. Then, add flossing. Build good new habits incrementally. If the average person experiences four “wins” per day. Dr. Noor suggests, “start off with one little goal every day.” Give yourself one win, and build off your success. When a patient tells Dr. Noor that they feel better, that’s the most rewarding part of her work- when she can celebrate a patient’s “wins”, with them.

SPOON UP a

SMOOTHIE

Smoothie bowls are a supreme upgrade to your traditional sippable smoothie. This incarnation of smoothie is so thick you need a spoon. The key to a velvety-thick smoothie bowl is using frozen fruits and vegetables--and less liquids, just a splash of almond milk or water is all you need. You can play around with your favorite combinations of flavors based on what fruit is stocked in your freezer and which super foods you're loading up on. Frozen fruits such as mango, banana,

and berries make a good base. Throw in a handful of greens for vitamins or a spoonful of Greek yogurt or nut butter for a pop of protein. Place your ingredients in a high-power blender and blend until smooth. Transfer to a bowl and top with fresh or dried fruit, nuts, seeds, or granola for a quick and satisfying breakfast, lunch, or snack.

My five year old had her first cleaning and x-rays ever today with Dr. Lisa and Kimberly, the hygienist, and it couldn’t have gone better! My daughter was in tears with worry on the drive over, but by the end of her appointment she was raving. She even said, “Once they started talking to me I could tell I didn’t have to be worried anymore.
