I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.

This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment.

Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

yoga classes. The rescue shelters bring in the litters of adoptable kittens or puppies where they join us in a very special class. We raise awareness to help get the puppies and kittens adopted, and all of the proceeds raised for the class get donated to the dogs and cats in need.” YogaSix will also host private events and have done one with a girl scout group where they came in for a yoga class. “We plan on eventually offering a kid's yoga class on the regular schedule at some point. We believe the benefits of yoga for the younger generations will help shape healthier mindset, boost their self-esteem, develop strength, and teach discipline.” Pets have a magical way of connecting with children. Meet Doja and Her Dad

A Bond That Goes Beyond Words

In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, there exists a timeless bond between a man and his dog. This unique relationship goes beyond mere companionship, as it embodies loyalty, love, and unwavering support. Allow me to introduce you to Doja and her dad, Dave Schell, while I highlight the heartwarming connection they share.

Doja is a very special dog, not only to Dave but to many others. She turned one June 29th. Dave rented out her daycare facility so she could enjoy her special day with 20 of her dog friends and their parents.  Dave got Doja from Misfit Bullies last September when Doja was only 12 weeks old. “I brought her home but made sure I stopped at my parents' house first so my dad could meet her on his last few weeks of being with us.” “I’ll never forget my dad asking me," “What are you going to do with that?” With a

laugh, Dave replied, "I’ll make her feel very special and she will put a smile on strangers' faces.”  The duo love to visit local nursing homes so she can kiss all the sick patients. They also spend time with kids at a local daycare. Doja attends dog daycare at CLE Unleashed to keep her active and loveable with other dogs. “I devote a lot of time, energy, and love to her and have been very good at socializing since she was little.  We enjoy shopping together, she loves car rides, lots of walks, and her favorite toy is the loudest toy she can find at the time. She loves to be the center of attention.”  Doja also loves her monthly bath at Bubble-Nest Grooming to see her twin brother. What girl doesn't love a spa day? When it comes to choosing the right flooring for a household with kids and pets, durability and safety are key factors to consider. Kids and pets can be rough on floors, so it's important to select materials that can withstand their activities while also being easy to clean and maintain. Here are some of the best flooring choices for households with kids and pets according to Tricia Towles, owner of WestBay Floor Source in Westlake.

Laminate flooring is an excellent choice for families with kids and pets. “Laminate is great for those large pets that like to run around. The tough durable finish of a laminate prevents scratches and is durable enough to withstand kids that are rough on it as well. Most laminates have a water-resistant warranty protecting it from topical spills including dog water bowls.” Says Tricia. Laminate flooring is also available in a wide range of styles and designs, making it a versatile option for any room in your home.

Vinyl flooring is another great option for households with kids and pets. It is water-resistant, stain-resistant, and can handle heavy foot traffic. Vinyl flooring is also available in various styles, including luxury vinyl planks that mimic the look of hardwood or stone.  “Luxury vinyl plank and tile are some of our most popular products for families with pets and children because of their waterproof warranties and resistance to scratching and staining.” Tricia adds. Because of these features vinyl planks are great products for every area of your home including bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements!

If you prefer the look of hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood is a suitable choice for families with kids and pets. It is more resistant to moisture and temperature changes compared to solid hardwood, making it less prone to warping or cupping. Engineered hardwood has either an oil finish or an aluminum oxide (or the like) finish making it a practical option for households with active children and pets.

Porcelain tile is a durable and low-maintenance flooring option that is ideal for areas prone to spills and messes. It is stain-resistant, water-resistant, and can withstand heavy use. Porcelain tile is available in an assortment of colors, patterns, and textures, allowing you to create a stylish and kid-friendly space.

For areas where comfort and softness are desired, carpet can be a good choice. There is carpet geared towards pets and kids with pet warranties and built-in stain protection. These specific carpets are fade resistant and bleach resistant. Many manufacturers offer at least one line of this type of carpet now - Shaw has "Pet Perfect carpet" that offers a warranty to cover all pet stains and has lifeguard spill proof. Mohawk's "Smartstrand" carpets cover “All pets, all accidents, all the time" with an all pet protection and warranty. Phenix has a line of "Floorever Pet Plus" with Microban surface protection and enhanced pet protection.

Tricia always recommends upgrading your pad to a spillguard pad. This makes it easier to wick up spills from your carpet and prevents the spills and odors from soaking through your pad and into your subfloor.

When choosing the best flooring for kids and pets, it is important to consider factors such as durability, ease of maintenance, and safety. Each of the flooring options mentioned above offers unique benefits that can help create a comfortable and kid-friendly environment in your home.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.”

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
