LIFESTYLE LETTER
January is for Health & Wellness
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Candice Berube | candice.berube@citylifestyle.com 413-519-6752 CONTRIBUTING WRITERS
Lisa Queenin, Madeline LeBlanc, Jennifer Giffune
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term, but inspiring our readers to invest in what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to share stories of business and local entities that will inspire lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

1. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND.
I grew up in Southwick and ventured through various places during my late teens and early twenties. Life led me to discover a fitness studio that ignited my passion for fitness, and being able to bring that passion back to my hometown is one of life’s greatest gifts. Welcoming lifelong friends into my studio has been both a blessing and a lot of fun!I’ve been teaching group fitness for over 8 years now, and it has consistently been the spark that lights up my life, allowing me to focus fully on the task at hand. Over the past 8 years, I’ve dedicated myself to continuous education, completing multiple indoor cycling courses, a 200hr yoga certification, Buti Yoga certification, Baptiste level 1, NASM PT certification, and KBCU levels 1&2.
3. WHAT DOES DAILY DOSE STUDIO OFFER?
Daily Dose offers a variety of fitness classes, including hot yoga, indoor cycling, and kettlebell strength training, welcoming participants of all fitness levels. Additionally, we provide monthly workshops catering to absolute beginners seeking education before diving in and more experienced clients looking to refine their skills.
2. HOW DID DAILY DOSE STUDIO GET ITS BEGINNINGS?
During the COVID pandemic, I found myself working long hours at my full-time job, leading me to step away from teaching temporarily. Opening a studio had always been a dream, but it felt like an enormous dream. Without my teaching outlet and with the support of my partner, I decided to pursue that dream. I quit my job, formulated a plan, and with the support of friends and family, Daily Dose Studio became a reality.
4. WHAT DO YOUR MEMBERS LOVE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR STUDIO?
The studio’s overarching goal is to “empower the community through movement.” I’m proud to say that if you ask any client what

they love about Daily Dose, the resounding answer would be our community. With the combined efforts of my instructors and clients, we’ve created a supportive environment that teaches each individual how to become the best version of themselves, both in and out of the studio.
5. WHAT’S NEXT FOR DAILY DOSE?
We’re expanding! More space means more equipment for strength classes, a dedicated room for yoga with added heat and relaxing vibes, and mirrors for our cycling classes to help you perfect that choreography!
6. HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE DAILY DOSE?
To experience Daily Dose, simply sign up through our website, DailyDose-Studio.com, and come try a class! We understand that nerves can be significant when trying out a new fitness studio, but we promise you’ll feel supported as soon as you walk through our door. 610 College Hwy, Southwick | dailydose-studio.com

Enjoy your vacation SKIP THE GUILT TRIP. A new year means vacation planning time! Whether you are going to the mountains or the beach, you still have to bring your health issues with you. If you do your homework, the journey will be more relaxing and compatible with your health. Most people only focus on the time they are away, which is a mistake. Instead, do some work each step of the way. There are actions you can take well ahead of time, the day of and while you are away. To avoid the guilt trip most commonly experienced after the suitcase is back in the closet, complete step four – what to do when you get home. STEP ONE - WELL AHEAD OF TIME 1. Contact the airline/bus/train/cruise line and choose healthy meal(s). 2. Pick a place with kitchen facilities. 3. Research supermarkets near where you are staying. 4. Review restaurants in the area, so you know where you can eat healthy food. 5. Bring a belly bag for snacks. 6. Pack non-perishable healthy items you think may be difficult to find. 7. Practice portion control 8. Choose your treat days in advance; keep to 2 times/week STEP TWO - DAY OF, BUT STILL NOT ON THE WAY 1. Bring a reusable water bottle 2. Pack non-perishable healthy snacks (such as dried fruit & roasted unsalted/unsweetened nuts) 3. Pack healthy perishable items in an insulated bag (try low fat cheese stick or single serve hummus) 4. Eat healthy foods before you head out 5. Stay hydrated 6. Bring non-food activities

STEP THREE - ON THE WAY 1. Eat your healthy snacks 2. Stay hydrated, limiting caffeine & alcohol 3. Eat slowly 4. Get moving (walk the airport) 5. Choose solid food instead of drinking your calories 6. Hit the local supermarket to get healthy foods for your room 7. Plan timing of meals & snacks 8. Use portion control, sharing with another person STEP FOUR – HOME AGAIN 1. Pat yourself on the back for healthy steps you implemented 2. Remember it’s okay to enjoy the foods you ate 3. Complete this sentence, “The next healthy thing I am going to do is _________” and get going! Vacations range from downtime to massively adventurous and everything in between. Don’t let your health interfere with these special occasions. Since your health issues can’t be left at home, embrace actions you can take to make vacationing a success from beginning to end. Girls on the Run Western MA
INSPIRING GIRLS TO BE JOYFUL, HEALTHY, AND CONFIDENT ARTICLE BY LISA QUEENIN
26
K I D’S COR N E R | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND OF GIRLS ON THE RUN? WHERE DID IT GET STARTED? WHEN DID IT ARRIVE ON THE LOCAL SCENE?
Girls on the Run was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a team of 13 brave girls. The program's growth was remarkable, starting with 26 girls in the next season, then 75, and it continued to expand. In 2000, Girls on the Run International, a 501(c)(3) organization, officially came into existence. Locally, Girls on the Run Western MA, an independent council of Girls on the Run International, was established in 2015. We proudly serve over 1,800 girls annually in grades 3-8 across all four western MA counties, impacting the lives of over 9,000 girls since our inception.
WHAT IS THE MISSION BEHIND GIRLS ON THE RUN?
Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. The program fosters the development of critical life skills and behaviors such as managing emotions, resolving conflict, showing empathy, and making decisions. Additionally, it encourages an increase in physical activity. The program concludes with participants positively impacting the community through a service project and completing a celebratory 5K.
IT APPEARS THAT GIRLS ON THE RUN HAS BEEN GROWING. TELL US ABOUT THAT.
Since 2015, Girls on the Run Western MA has experienced consistent growth across all four western MA counties. In the past fall, we had 720 participants at 52 sites with 220 volunteer coaches. This spring, we anticipate more than 80 teams and 300 volunteer coaches. The end-of-season 5K event brings together participants, coaches, run buddies, and families, drawing a crowd of over 3,000 people. We remain committed to serving the whole community, providing financial aid to 65% of our participants and not turning anyone away for financial need.
HOW CAN WE GET INVOLVED IN GIRLS ON THE RUN?
We rely on the support of over 500 volunteers annually to deliver our programs. Volunteers can serve as coaches, board members, or assist during our 5K events. Financial support and in-kind donations from individuals and businesses in the communities we serve are crucial. Donations contribute to financial aid, running shoes for participants in need, coach training, curriculum materials, snacks, t-shirts, and make our 5K events possible. To learn more about participating in Girls on the Run, volunteering, or supporting the organization, visit girlsontherunwesternma.org.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GIRLS ON THE RUN?
Research indicates that the 3rd to 8th grade period is critical for girls, as self-confidence starts to decline by age 9, and 50% of girls aged 10 to 13 experience bullying. Physical activity levels also decrease significantly during this time, placing them at a higher risk for poor health outcomes. Girls on the Run addresses these challenges by empowering girls to recognize and activate their limitless potential. Trained coaches guide small teams of girls through 10 weeks of lessons that promote social-emotional learning alongside physical activity. The positive impact of the program is evident to families and schools.
