Legal Tip of the Month from Bacon Wilson Small businesses owners are willing to do whatever it takes for their companies to succeed, and many choose to operate as sole proprietors or partnerships. Unfortunately, setting up shop this way can sometimes create more risk than reward. If a sole proprietor or partnership is sued, nonbusiness assets – including homes, cars, and personal bank accounts – can be in jeopardy. To protect assets, business owners can consider forming a “limited liability” entity. Once formed, the business has a separate legal existence, and business assets are safely separated from personal assets. 99 Springfield Road, Westfield \ 413.562.6611 WESTFIELD SPRINGFIELD AMHERST HADLEY NORTHAMPTON BACONWILSON.COM

LIFESTYLE LETTER
EXPLORE Westfield & Southwick I love the April Issue every year. Not only is April 22nd Earth Day, but National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April. We are approaching this month a little differently where we will not only celebrate the environment and the beauty of our great region, but we will explore it, too! Have you heard of the Greening the Gateway Program? Governor Baker joined us this past fall for the 30,000th tree planting as part of the Massachusetts program. Visit our feature article, and see if your neighborhood is within the planting zone! If you're feeling like getting out in nature, perhaps you will hike the same trails as photographer Gary Tracy. Check out his amazing shots of our beautiful wildlife! And, if running is more your speed, Dr. Dan Griffin gives actionable tips on getting out there and getting started! Did you know that pollinators depend on our lawns to thrive? Give your yard a break, and allow our eco-system's most important members to do their job. And while you're taking a respite from mowing, perhaps this is your year to start a garden or add chickens to your brood. Read more on how Westfield Feed and Supplies can support these new endeavors. If you're out and about in Southwick, be sure to follow in Editor Madeline LeBlanc's footsteps and visit the "hidden gems" of Southwick. It promises to be a fun-filled day! And, if you're looking for a beautiful evening of music, the Westfield Athenaeum is hosting the second of three concert chamber music series with Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra on April 14th. There is so much to do here, and we're so thankful we can experience a robust offering of resources and entertainment. We are thrilled to see more and more of our residents and businesses shouting us out on social media, too! Remember to tag us in your local posts @westfield_city_lifestyle, or scan the below QR code, and you could find yourself in our next issue of Westfield City Lifestyle!

LOVE YOUR LAZY LAWN An easy way to help the ecosystem ARTICLE BY ANDREA BUGBEE
Give some thought to this. Almost all US fruit and grain crops depend on pollination, yet our insect population has declined by 75% in the last 25 years - and most pollinators are insects. Fortunately, keeping pollinators (and our local farms) alive couldn’t be easier. Just get lazy about your lawn! Lawns mowed every two weeks offer more food for pollinators than lawns mowed weekly. So, while you’re lounging on the couch every other Saturday, your longer grass will be supporting American food systems. As a bonus, longer lawns also need less water, so being lazy saves you money, too. Perfect lawns are literally the empty calories of the ecosystem. By letting go of that green-carpet ideal, you’ll add color to your landscape by allowing dandelions, violets, and white clover to decorate your grass. More important, these “weeds” feed pollinators which, in turn, feed us. Here’s one more way being lazy can save the world: skip the pesticides. Pesticides kill pollinators, and they’re hardly health food for humans, birds, and pets, either. In fact, research shows that when bees visit plants treated with neonicotinoids (a chemical in most pesticides), even small amounts can build up over time and kill the hive. Neonicotinoids disorient bees and disrupt their fertility. Worse, they can linger in plants and pollen for 2-4 years. So be a hero. Stay in bed this weekend and stop fussing over your lawn. NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARY TRACY
There is something to be said about all the beauty that surrounds us here in the Westfield and Southwick region. As a lifelong resident, it is a true joy for me to share what I see through the pictures that I take, as I step out my front door. I am often asked where I travel for photos. In Westfield, I hike the trails that run along Little River behind Stanley Park and the fields near Shaker Farms Country Club. I’ve also traversed Route 20 and enjoyed the sights on the Westfield River. When it comes to Southwick, I can’t help but love the rolling farmlands and country settings that support a vast amount of wildlife. A great way to see it is on the bike trail that connects the two towns. Visit me at the Artworks of Westfield vendor events, and check out “Photography by Gary Allen” on FB. You can also find me on IG @Patsfan.104.

HIDDEN GEMS AROUND T OW N MY DAY IN SOUTHWICK
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MADELINE LEBLANC
B LO S S O M I N G AC R E S ADDRESS: 249 College Hwy Southwick, MA 413-569-3663 Oftentimes we forget about our local businesses as we leave town to explore new areas. I wanted to highlight what a day looks like shopping at places in Southwick that I consider “Hidden Gems” in our community. My first stop of the day is Blossoming Acres. Here we find a charming, old-fashioned country store filled with tons of goodies such as: farm fresh produce, special bakery items, over 17 different kinds of homemade soups, as well as locally made honey, candies, lotions, soaps and much more! I left with a few pastries, some soap and an iced tea. I can’t wait to try their soup!

Next on the list is the Country Colonial Shop. I felt so embraced after reading a sign on the building saying, “Welcome to all; enter as strangers, leave as friends.” I had never been in this store before, however, after leaving I know I will find myself back there more often. This shop has it all: handbags, jewelry, wooden signs, Polish Pottery, furniture, candles, and decor. You name it, they have it. Country Colonial Shop is a perfect place to purchase gifts for friends or yourself! I loved their wreaths and bunny signs - perfect for the Easter Season!
BAR SHOPPE SOUTHWICK ADDRESS: 106 Point Grove Rd Southwick, MA 413-569-9588 Finishing off my day, I stopped in The Bar Shoppe for some cocktails and a light snack with my mother. I was in a sweet mood, so I decided on getting a S’mores Martini for myself and a Funky Monkey for my mom. We ordered a meat and cheese board and we were greeted with this beautiful platter! I loved combining the crackers with brie cheese and prosciutto. This was the perfect ending to a great day, supporting local Southwick businesses! S’mores Martini: Whipped Cream Vodka, Choc Liqueur, Cacao Liqueur, choc/graham cracker rim and torched marshmallow Funky Monkey: Vanilla Vodka, White Chocolate Godiva, Banana Liqueur and peanut butter with a brûléed banana garnish Meat & Cheese Board: Cranberry, Cheddar, Gouda, Brie, and Asiago, with Salami, Calabrese and Capocollo

GREENING THE GATEWAY CITIES An Urban Canopy Project in Westfield
There are many reasons to plant a tree in your yard. Thanks to the collaboration between the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Urban & Community Forestry Program, Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA), Department of Energy Resources (DOER), Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), cities, and nonprofits, the Greening the Gateway Cities Program (GGCP) is offering some local Westfield residents trees for free. GGCP saw the potential in Westfield as a midsize urban city with neighborhoods that had low tree canopy cover. Julie Coop, State Coordinator; Doug Hutcheson, Program Forester; Sarah Greenleaf, Urban Forester; and Bridget Matthews-Kane, Westfield’s Ward 3 Councilor, are a few of the many helping to make this program happen. In addition to reducing energy consumption, wind speeds, summer temperatures, and heat loss in winter, Julie, Sarah, and Bridget say the trees offer even more benefits. “The trees intercept stormwater runoff, prevent erosion, and increase property values,” Julie said. Sarah added, “There are people who love wildlife, and sometimes that is

a reason to get the trees. Other people want more shade. We have the great opportunity to work with property owners and residents to select the tree that’s right for them.” Bridget continued, “Studies also show that tree-lined neighborhoods have lower crime rates, lower rates of ADD and asthma in children, improved academic performance, and less noise pollution. The bonus is that they are beautiful.” Summers ago, homeowners in Worcester County noticed it felt hotter and air conditioners were running more, subsequently increasing utility bills. Officials learned this was because of the removal of 30,000 trees infested by the Asian Longhorned beetle. GGCP was inspired by the tree replanting efforts that followed. Bridget advocated for Westfield’s inclusion: “I was lucky to be a councilor so I could help set the boundaries, walk the streets to collect data, and promote a fantastic program. I grew up on Holland Avenue and I can remember the lush, beautiful canopies of trees that lined the street. It made it a magical place to be a kid. The streets in our ward lost those trees over the decades, and I want to bring them back so the next generation can experience that same magic.”

Planting crew in Westfield
“GGCP planted the program’s 30,000th tree on Westfield’s Common in October,” Doug stated proudly. “To date, the program has planted in 18 of the 26 designated Gateway Cities. We have nine planting crews. Our target is to increase tree canopy cover by 5%. We just began in Westfield, and it’s ripe with opportunity. Julie followed up with more program objectives: “Our goal is to plant at least 2,400 trees per city. Planting happens 20% on public land, and 80% on private property. We’re focusing on about 1,000 acres of planting in each city.” Sarah is in Westfield, actively planting trees and working with homeowners; 208 trees were planted in 2021. “The goal is to keep it diverse,” Sarah declared. “The top choices in Westfield last year were the black gum, tulip poplar, and paperbark maple trees. However, we have around 40 species from which to choose, focusing on maximizing benefits on the property.” Check the map to see if you live within the targeted downtown area: maurbancanopy.org/town/westfield. If you’re in the zone, give Sarah a call at (617) 626-1473 to schedule your tree planting. All you have to do is water!

Westfield Feed is, and has always been, a locally-owned and family-operated business. The store changed hands and locations a few times in its 100-year plus history; from Elm Street to Route 20 to Union Street, the location may have altered, but the commitment to filling customers’ needs was the priority then and still is today. Co-owner Jenn Stauffer explains: “We are a traditional New England feed store that offers feed, hay, and farm supplies, but as customers’ needs changed over time, my family’s store changed, too. These days, many of our customers come to us for pet food and wood pellet fuel. So, we evolved but stayed the same in spirit!” Westfield Feed is your one-stop shop for the best lines of dog and cat food, feed for all animals, and supplies for your lawn and garden. Co-owner Mike Sadowski told us more about the popular
brands of food that they carry. “Westfield Feed is a Blue Seal dealer; this is the main line of farm animal feed that we provide, but we also have their dog and cat food. Blue Seal’s food is milled right here in New England, bagged when we order it, and shipped fresh to the store every week. Westfield Feed has several other lines of high-quality pet foods, including Fromm, a Wisconsinbased family-owned company. A new line for us, Zignature, offers foods with novel protein sources and limited ingredient formulas; this line is great for all dogs, but especially those with allergies.” Springtime is the best time at Westfield Feed – you can find everything you need! From baby chicks to your new favorite pair of mud season boots, lawn and garden books, garden decorations, bird feeders, tools, soil, soil amendments for garden projects, and seed starting materials, Westfield Feed has your must-have spring supplies.

SPRING SEED STARTING It’s important to think about seed starting ahead of time. Jenn shared a few tips and tricks to get you started.
38
H OW TO | L IFE + CU LTU R E
SUPPLIES: seeds, seed starter pot/tray, soil, humidity dome, grow light, inside space over a heater or use of a heat mat, thermostat, sheltered area outside, planting area outside STEPS: 0 1 // Collect your supplies and choose your inside and outside areas. Choose your variety carefully. What are you going to grow? How many plants do you need? What month do you start planting? 0 2 // Seeds need warmth and light. Keep your planted seeds underneath a high-quality grow light and above a heater, or use a heat mat with a thermostat in the soil. The soil should be approximately 60°F, but some seeds prefer a temperature closer to 80°F. 0 3 // The soil should be damp when you first begin, and you will continue by misting gently. A humidity dome will ensure the soil doesn’t dry out. 0 4 // A few weeks before planting outside, take your seeds off of the heat. Consider taking your seeds outside during the day, and bringing them back in at night. About a week before transferring them outside, start keeping your seeds sheltered outside. 0 5 // Most seedlings are ready to be put in the ground by Memorial Day, but keep an eye on that New England weather! 0 6 // Make sure each plant has the appropriate amount of space outside; they’ll grow larger than you think. 0 7 // Keep your seeds well-watered. 0 8 // Enjoy your garden!
SPRING IS THE TIME FOR CHICKENS It’s time to place your chick orders!
SUPPLIES AND AREA SETUP: a safe brooding enclosure with bedding, heat lamp, food, and 3-6 feet of space per bird in a coop with a roosting bar. 0 1 // Pre-order forms are due in April. 0 2 // Collect your supplies and plan/ construct your coop, ensuring there is outdoor space safe from predators and well-insulated for the winter. 0 3 // Pick up your chicks around the second week in May. 0 4 // Keep your chicks in the brooder at 90°F-95°F, dropping the temperature 5°F/week. 0 5 // After 1-2 months indoors, when it’s warmer outside and the chicks have all their feathers, they’re ready for the coop. 0 6 // The chickens need food and water daily, and the coop cleaned weekly. 0 7 // The chickens will start laying eggs 5-6 months after you receive them.

Op.56, No. 1; Hedwige Chretien’s Wind Quintet; Darius Milhaud La Cheminée du roi René and Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite The MOSSO season at The Westfield Athenaeum opened March 10, with the Aryaloka Quartet, Violinists Mark Latham and Beth Welty, violist Noralee Walker, and cellist Sandi-Jo Malmon performing William Grant Still’s Lyric String Quartet; Charles Ives’ String Quartet #1 Op.57 “From The Salvation Army: A Revival Service”; Beethoven’s String Quartet in C major, op. 59 #3; and an additional piece to be announced at the performance. The season will conclude with a concert on May 19, with a program to be announced soon. Guy McLain, Executive Director of the Westfield Athenaeum, said “We’re thrilled to bring classical music back to downtown Westfield, and we are glad that the musicians of MOSSO have chosen to partner with us to make this kind of music programming available. Tickets for the concert, $20.00, must be purchased in advance at The Westfield Athenaeum during business hours, or online at westath.org. Audience members will be required to wear masks. MOSSO is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, which is not a subsidiary of nor affiliated with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Inc. MOSSO was organized by the musicians this year to produce and perform concerts in Greater Springfield and Western Massachusetts, and to date, they have presented their musicians in pop-up concerts throughout the area. For further information about MOSSO’s programs, visit MOSSO at SpringfieldSymphonyMusicians.com, or find MOSSO on Facebook at Facebook.com/ mossomusicians The Westfield Athenaeum, located in downtown Westfield, serves as the cultural center for the city. In addition to an active public library, providing a range of information services, the Athenaeum features an art museum with regular exhibits of regional artists, and a history museum, documenting the history of Westfield and the surrounding region from 1669 to the present day. GET TING BACK TO RU N NING Spring is finally here! The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and the last signs of winter are nearly gone. If you are considering getting back or getting into running, here are a few tips to help ease the transition, while avoiding injury, too.
CHOOSE A RUNNING PROGRAM OR START SLOWLY Don’t overdo it! Start with 5-10 minutes of jogging or light running and progress training volume (running distance, intensity and frequency) slowly as your body gets accustomed to it.
WARM UP AND COOL DOWN No skipping warm ups! Walking, light hopping in place (or jumping rope) and dynamic stretches are great ways to prepare your body for running. Static stretches and foam rolling are easy ways to cool down and crucial in regards to injury prevention and recovery.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT FOOTWEAR No 2 year old worn-out running sneakers! Proper running shoes allow you to run with better technique and reduce your risk for injury. Get fitted at your local running store or get a recommendation from a physical therapist or running coach.
Dr. Dan Griffin founded Resilience Physical Therapy and Wellness in 2019 to bring greater awareness to the many aspects of wellness and provide quality 1-on-1 physical therapy care. Dan and the Resilience team specialize in the active population and have been able to successfully diagnose and treat runners from all over Western MA.
MIX UP YOUR TRAINING Don’t forget to change up your fitness regimen! Cycling, swimming, and lifting weights are all good alternatives to running every day, and each will help increase your overall level of fitness. They’ll also build strength while giving your body a break from the high-impact workout that running provides.
Check back in June on ways to manage common running injuries! Resilience Physical Therapy and Wellness, 413-789-0752, resilienceptwellness.com. Dr Dan Griffin
