It's a time to be Thankful! November brings notions of harvest blessings which herald the holidays, thankfulness, and generosity. The last of an autumn breeze and fall leaves ablaze with incandescent colors; a family or friends table filled with good tidings and food; community compassing to change the climate of a city's future. But where do we find Westfield in this image of ideals? Maybe it’s in the way Western Mass has hills in which to hide from the wearying work and everyday stress. Although the start to November means the end to leaf peeping, you can find the last fiery hues amongst the mountains while slowing down to reflect on life. Perhaps it’s cracking open a bottle of coquito with your corillo on a cold night, or calling up a local take-out spot for turkey and some sides. In the cooler months, Westfield finds its camaraderie in a community that works hard throughout the winter. On our off-time (if you could call it that), we congregate in churches, bars, breweries, salons, stores, classrooms, kitchens, offices — yes, those kitchen-offices count, too — and we trade deals, ideas, passions, discomforts, and delights in the safety of these spaces. Happiness is homemade, and it is frequently at meals pouring over paired wine and the minds of loved ones where we cultivate a renewed gratitude for the years so quickly passing. This month, as the season settles into itself, we ask each other: “Is the year already over? Are the holidays here again?” But there are 60 days left in 2022! This closing catalyst is a prompt for ourselves instead: “How can I make my best contribution to the mission right in front of me?” and "How can I love others more?" After all, it’s not the model car or size of house that counts, but how many people you've warmly hosted and entertained.

The coaches really care about safety and form and the owners are so kind and responsive and really care about you as a person! I had been an enthusiast of working out at home, with the full set-up of weights and cardio equipment, but since starting earlier this year, I haven't even touched them because I'd rather go to class! I've made friends, which can be difficult after a move.

I'm so happy I took that initial leap!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, not just because I am a foodie, but because it brings people together. Often, I am asked “Where can I find the best turkey dinner?” and my answer is always Delaney’s Market. They offer multiple portion sizes: single person, two person, or four person. Shown to the left is a four-person turkey dinner. The meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and cranberries on top. You can purchase additional sides, cranberry sauce, gravy, and desserts. Each meal comes either frozen or ready to heat & serve. For this dinner you have the option to microwave it or bake it in the oven.

I recommend this meal for a Thanksgiving dinner if you don’t feel like cooking, or even if you want to share with family on a cold autumn night! Nickolas and Sue Linna started the business five years ago when they moved the practice from a small office downtown to its current location at 509 Southwick Rd. The renovation was extensive, he noted, but he said it was an investment in their patients for the support they’ve shown. “Our patients deserve the best all-around experience and this is our way of delivering that.”

Nick adds, “I am most proud of the fact that we are offering a unique experience to the Westfield area as an Independent Eyewear provider. This means with all of the decisions we make, whether it be eye care or eyewear, only the patient’s best interests are in mind.” Nick compared the experience of choosing new eyewear to a mini fashion show, explaining that the process between staff and patients is very interactive. “It’s the best part of what we do,” he said, explaining that fashion is more about confidence than trends. “ When you look great, you feel great and that’s our goal everyday.” There are over 1,500 pieces of eyewear on display at Vision Associates on any given day, so having an experienced staff to fit patients with the perfect pair is important. Jamie, a licensed optician, and Nick work together to see fashion and function come together. Sue and I have traveled extensively throughout Europe giving us the opportunity to see what’s up and coming in fashion. Eyewear is a big fashion statement in many countries and we believe it should be here as well. Vision Associates carries eyewear by Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Burberry, Dolce and Gabbana, Prada, Furla, Carolina Herrera, Etnia Barcelona, Oakley, Ray-Ban, Nike and Calvin Klein, among others. Westfield, Southwick, Granville, and Northampton residents recently learned new ways to save money, live sustainably, and plan for a hotter future - all thanks to their local libraries. Saturday, Sept. 24 through Friday, September 30, the Pioneer Valley Library Collaborative (PVLC) presented Climate Preparedness Week, a national event spearheaded by the Bostonbased nonprofit, Communities Responding to Extreme Weather.

“Climate change is a topic that’s on a lot of people’s minds, and libraries are the purveyors of information in our communities. Climate Preparedness Week allows us to join together to offer factual information through engaging programs,” Lynn Blair, Southwick Public Library Director and PVLC’s Lead Librarian, said. “The nice thing about the PVLC is that we can find local presenters with local information that can answer local people’s questions,” Blair said. Free and open to residents of any town, Climate Preparedness Week offered a broad slate of events for patrons of all ages. Programs included a chance to practice mindfulness in beautiful Stanley Park; a kids’ cooking class at Forbes using locally grown produce, and an opportunity to engage in “Climate Change 101” with Westfield State University professor, Dr. Carsten Braun. “Climate Preparedness Week is this opportunity for us, at every age, to be able to understand our world today. We’re so disconnected from nature that we don’t really understand it - and it’s changing so quickly it’s actually hard to grasp it,” says Lise Letellier, Granville Public Library Director. Other library programs throughout the year have focused on gardening for pollinators, growing and storing food, trivia nights, forest and tree conservation, eating a plant-based diet, and even bird watching. “No matter what age we’re at, the library provides us with good information,” she said. “Climate change is happening,” LeTellier said. “Every year is so different, and we don’t know what to expect any more. Learning to be prepared for the unexpected is more important now than ever.”

Grilled Bruschetta paired with Chateâu Laborde Bordeaux Blanc Grilled bruschetta kicked off the evening. We paired that dish with Beau Co. Wine’s French 2018 Château Laborde Bordeaux Blanc. We chose this 100% Sauvignon Blanc because it is light, crispy, and well-balanced. On the palate, this dry Sauvignon Blanc tastes similar to how it smells, with flavors of lime and grapefruit, passion fruit, white peach, and bell pepper with floral notes, and a lovely long finish. It pairs nicely with bruschetta because of the acidic and flavorful taste of tomatoes, along with the added salt of cheeses (and, in this instance, capers), which is nicely balanced with the scrumptious fattiness of olive oil.

Meal: Grilled Italian bread brushed with garlic butter and topped with tomatoes, garlic, mozzarella, avocado, cilantro, basil, and capers, all tossed in olive oil & parmesan. Wine Pairing: Chateâu Laborde Bordeaux Blanc, Bordeaux, France

Chester Common Table Veggie Pasta & Glendale Ridge Vineyard Rosé The Italians famously start their meals with a pasta course. Chester Common Table created our pasta course. The summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes, onion and spinach provided a beautiful collection of color. This fresh and light combination of savory flavors paired beautifully with Glendale Ridge’s Rosé. This pale pink, still wine is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and it screams summer with watermelon and strawberry dominating the nose and palate throughout. Savor further to find notes of rose petal as it finishes with a mineral acidity. This was a great compliment to the savory flavors of the summer pasta!

The main course consisted of two pork dishes.

Emma’s Pork & Glendale Ridge Vineyard Malbec Emma’s Everyday Gourmet Chef, Kyle Cortis, created the favorite main course, skillfully combining savory flavors for this amazing meal. A dish this complex deserves a wine that matches its flavor with equal complexity and intensity. Glendale Ridge’s Malbec is a perfect choice. This 2019 Malbec is medium purple, rich with dark fruit and a little smoke. The berry flavors intermingle with cedar notes from its barrel aging. It finishes with beautiful acidity.

Meal: Coffee-encrusted pork tenderloin with a savory sausage stuffing and finished with a thick blackberry-balsamic reduction and crispy sage leaves! Wine Pairing: Glendale Ridge Vineyard Malbec

Susan’s Pork & Monchiero Barbera d’Alba The second dish, a grilled pork tenderloin, is super easy, and super good! Again, bold flavors should be met with a bold wine. We chose Beau Co. Wine’s Monchiero Barbera d’Alba. This wine is produced in the Piedmont region of Italy. The region is known for its production of Barolo and Barbera wines, but the natives will tell you they always drink the Barbera! This wine is aromatic with violet, plum and berry notes. It is a dry, full-bodied Barbera with lush plum and blackberry flavors, balanced by round tannins and bright acidity. A perfect match for the apple cinnamon grilled pork. Meal: Pork tenderloin, grilled until desired temperature, and then finished in a balsamic reduction with sauteed apples and cinnamon. Wine Pairing: Monchiero Barbera d’Alba, Piemonte, Italy

Table Blackberry Tart & Glendale Ridge Vineyard Riesling Erin Patrick, who owns Chester Common Table with husband Aaron Allen, is one of the area’s most talented bakers. Known for locally sourcing ingredients, Erin made the most wonderful French-style blackberry and almond tart, with a shortbread crust, and frangipane filling – a fantastic combination of flavor and texture. The tart was not too sweet, so we paired it with Glendale Ridge’s 2021 Mid-Dry Riesling. This classic Riesling is medium dry. It is smooth, with flavors of pear and lemon. Its minerality gives it a sense of place. This balanced nicely with the fruit and filling of the tart.

Meal: French-style blackberry and almond tart, with a short bread crust, and frangipane filling. Wine Pairing: Glendale Ridge Vineyard Riesling

COURSE #5: CHEESE

(FINALE)

Cheeses paired with Portuguese Fine Tawny Port by Miguels Traditionally the cheese course allows you to finish the wine that accompanies the meal. Cheeses neutralize the acids from the food and wine consumed during the previous courses. This trend has become increasingly popular North America dinner rituals. We not only finished the wine from the main course, but topped off the evening with adding a Portuguese Fine Tawny Port by Miguels. A golden-colored, sweet wine with aromas of red berry compote, it is well-balanced with wood and vanilla aromas.

Meal: Several cheese choices, including local bleu cheese, honey goat cheese, extra sharp cheddar, smoked gouda, and fresh marinated mozzarella. Wine Pairing: Portuguese Fine Tawny Port by Miguels

When We See How Older Relatives are Really Doing

I have found over my many years working in the senior living industry that holiday visits are often a wake-up call for adult children who realize their parent isn’t doing all that well living alone. Although it can be tough facing the reality that elderly relatives are more frail or forgetful than the last time you visited, it’s a great opportunity to make a change for the better. Use this checklist to determine whether your loved one could benefit from a more supportive living option. • Check the mail: The mail offers clues to how your loved one is managing money, a common warning sign of cognitive trouble. Look for unopened bills, letters from banks or creditors, or thank-you messages from charities. • Give a hug: Clues aren’t always visible from a distance. You might learn more from a hug. Look for obvious weight loss or gain, or increased frailty. • Check the medicine cabinet: Individuals over 65 take an average of 14 prescriptions a year and those over 80 more than 19. That’s a lot to manage! Medication errors are leading causes of hospitalization in older adults. Look for expired, discontinued or duplicate prescription bottles. • Inspect the kitchen: This room is especially revealing. Look for expired perishables, multiples of the same item, a freezer full of frozen dinners, broken appliances, or signs of past fire.

• Observe your parent’s social life: Social circles can shrink with age, especially due to fears around Covid19, which can have health and safety implications. Look for signs of isolation - rarely leaving the house, disinterest in activities that were once important, or lacking a group of friends. Encouraging an aging relative to move can be stressful for all concerned. Keep in mind that assisted living does not mean a loss of independence. Quite the contrary! Come holiday season, savor the flavor of the Caribbean with Coquito - a traditional drink, made by the batch, that tastes like sweet, creamy coconut, kissed by cinnamon and spices. It is similar to American-style eggnog, but varies in origin of ingredients with each family’s coquito coming out slightly different. A standard and easy start is the 1-1-1-1-1 method, using 1 can or cup of each base ingredient. Some listed items like vanilla, nutmeg and rum are strongly recommended, but optional. Fun non-traditional variations include: pistachio, oreo, chocolate, and banana.

Gather ingredients: 12oz can coconut cream; 13.5oz can coconut milk; 12oz can evaporated milk; 14oz can sweetened condensed milk; rum; cinnamon sticks; cloves, star anise, vanilla, ground nutmeg & cinnamon.

Make tea base: Boil 1 cup water with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Discard spices & let cool.

Pour milks together: In a blender or large bowl, pour together all the cans: coconut cream, coconut milk, evaporated milk, and sweet condensed. Mix thoroughly until smooth.

Combine bases: Add tea base to milk base blending until mixed. Taste test and adjust to liking. Optional: Add 1 cup rum of choice and spices. Blend, taste, and adjust if needed.

Chill: Bottle in the fridge until cold - at least one or two hours, but the colder the better.

Top with spice & enjoy! Once chilled and ready to serve, mix vigorously to reincorporate ingredients. Pour into a glass, lightly top with ground cinnamon, and enjoy!
