“I moved to the area and wanted to continue flying so I looked up Fly Lugu and was totally floored. Their staff is very warm and welcoming and you can feel that everyone there has a passion for teaching the next generation of pilots how to fly safely. I definitely recommend this school to anyone looking to advance their aviation career.” —DAVID BERETTA

Jennifer Giffune LOCAL NUTRITIONIST CHANGING LIVES
1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS: I am a registered dietitian and licensed nutritionist in private practice with over 35 years of experience. I provide one-on-one counseling for anyone 18-yearsold and older. I offer nutrition counseling about disease prevention as well as guidance in treating chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, weight management issues, etc. I believe food is part of any treatment plan, on par with medication and exercise. My philosophy is to work with a client to set in place the building blocks for a lifetime of healthy eating. There are no gimmicks, quick fixes, or miracle pills provided. A key to this journey is to give information about nutrition that is plain and simple, ready to use. I am also there when you need support and are struggling. I can always work with you to find a new approach, take smaller steps toward change, and hold your hand when things get tough. I see each client as a unique individual, needing a tailored, comprehensive plan created for you. So, we spend time together. I get to know you. It is important for me to understand your eating style and how it is influenced by outside forces- family, friends, work,

COME UP WITH YOUR HAIR COLOR PLAN.
Whether you want to stay natural or go lighter or
darker, now is the time to start planning. Make sure
you book your first service at least 6 months in advance. Also, you'll want to get your hair touched up anywhere from 7 to 10 days before the big day!
HAIR EXTENSIONS. If your hair needs a little pick me up, or you don’t have the length you desire, extensions may be the answer. I recommend planning your hair extension needs as far as a year in advance, to even the day of your consultation. KERATIN TREATMENTS. Frizz and breakage is one of the worst reasons hair

styles don’t look as polished as they could. I recommend a keratin treatment to help. Try this service at least 6-9 months in advance to see if you will need it before your wedding date.
THE HAIR STYLE. Now you know what you need to do to prepare your hair for the big day, think about the look. The most popular trends this year are going back to Hollywood Glamour and hair accessories. If you have an open back dress, you may want to consider a down style, while an up do or soft low bun will work with a high collar dress. I recommend your bridal hair style trial be held at least 6-12 months in advance. CONTINUED >

outdoor setting can make a huge difference in your makeup look. Even if you prefer to have a natural look, take into consideration your surroundings and bring it up a notch. MAKEUP.
Start looking at photos of you with makeup on in different styles. Collect inspirational photos of makeup you
like, as well. Start working on your eyebrows, in case you
need to grow them out or shape them into a proper arch. SKINCARE.
With your skin, consider a good moisturizer and
schedule a facial. Talk to an aesthetician to see what
your skin care needs are. This can be done as soon as 6 to 8 months prior to your wedding day. LASHES.
Consider false strip lashes or eyelash extensions.
Please go to a certified and licensed lash tech only. I would get these done well in advance to see how
your eyes react, and to see if it is the look you want to achieve. I would also recommend a new set or maintenance fill the week of your wedding.

Fly Lugu LOOK UP, GO UP!
FLY LUGU OWNER FREDRIKA BALLARD WAS ABLE TO FLY AN AIRPLANE UNASSISTED BEFORE SHE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO DRIVE A CAR. “I grew up flying. It was just something we did as a family, and I loved it,” this second-generation pilot said, recalling long-ago daytrips to destinations such as Martha’s Vinyard with her father, Richard Hamann, at the controls. “Just being up in the sky clears my head and resets me after a bad day,” Ballard said. “I love the freedom. For me, there’s nothing that’s more thrilling than taking off and leaving the earth.” Despite her passion for the sky, Ballard took a 25-year break from flying to focus on college, kids, and a demanding career as a surgical center administrator. In 2016, “I paid my son’s last tuition bill and I came to Barnes the next day,” she said, calling Westfield’s unsung airport “a gem.” With a yen for flight still strong in her soul, Ballard updated her credentials, earned her instructor’s license, and left the tarmac behind. “I didn’t start out thinking I would have a big flight school,” said Ballard, who founded Fly Lugu in November Owner of FlyLugu, Fredrika Ballard
of 2019. But quickly, she said, “I had so many students I was flying from sunrise to sunset. It became clear there was a big need.”

FLY LUGU (CONTINUED)
Today, Fly Lugu has 112 students. Thanks to Ballard as a welcoming role model, 50% of those students are female, even though women represent only 7% of pilots nationwide. Ballard’s youngest student is 12-year-old Cali Keenan, a “natural” who landed on her first lesson. Her oldest student is octogenarian Michael Silvestri, who visits Fly Lugu for his biennial flight reviews. Others include high school students, adults using the “pandemic pause” to finish training begun decades ago; even an executive/mom whose 18-month-old son became the school’s youngest passenger. Some of these fledgling flyers hope to buy or lease a plane with friends so they can wing off for hiking, skiing, or dining expeditions. “Other people are looking for a career track,” Ballard said. Serving either need, Fly Lugu offers structured courses in ground knowledge, private pilot licensure, instrument rating, and commercial rating. “It doesn’t end once you have your pilot’s license. There’s always something new to learn,” Ballard said, describing yet another aspect of flight that keeps her enthralled. New technologies, advanced techniques, clinics, videos, and continuing education through flight associations constantly inspire those with adventurous spirits and a love for learning to keep their goals high. Actually, that’s one reason the school’s name is so fitting. “L-UG-U is an acronym for Look Up, Go Up,” Ballard said. “In flying, when you pull the yoke towards you, the plane goes up, but if you’re looking down to the ground, you’re going to subconsciously push that yoke down and you’ll go down.” Ballard’s father, who had been a popular Southwick and WSU educator, used LUGU as a metaphor for life. When she faced the normal turbulence of growing up, Hamann would tell her, “Chin up. Look up. We’re not looking down.” It’s a mantra Ballard is proud to pass to her students. A Wright Flight instructor and a Westfield Technical Academy board member, Ballard uses her love of flying to show local youth that, in all aspects of life, the sky’s the limit. “The younger generation? They’re the difference makers,” she said. “If I can do my small part to help them attain their goals, that’s very rewarding for me.” 26

{I PROMISE, THEY ARE} FAUX-REAL BOUQUETS I have a secret! More than half of the flowers in my Spring tablescape are faux. Can you tell which ones are which? I’ll reveal one of them... all of my white tulips are faux! I am sure I’ve made all Florists cringe but in my humble opinion, when you mix faux flowers with real ones it really does something magical. Not only do faux look real next to real flowers but the whole bouquet lasts so much longer (I mean, half of them aren’t going to die anyway so I guess that’s pretty obvious). Mixing faux-real does a trick on the eye and I promise that you cannot tell the difference. There are, however, a lot of really bad obviously-faux flowers out there so follow these simple tips to get the best looking ones. FAUX FLOWER TIP #1: When hunting for the best faux flowers, look for the colors that you would see in nature. For example, in the natural world, flowers are often brightly colored but never, ever neon (save that for an outfit at your next 80’s party). FAUX FLOWER TIP #2: Choose faux flowers that have a natural looking shape as real flowers are rarely perfect and never identical. Stay away from faux flowers that are totally perfect. Perfect is not real life. FAUX FLOWER TIP #3: When choosing faux florals don’t forget to keep an eye on the stems and leaves. Go for a finish that is textured and never high gloss or smooth. Check out my faux floral highlight on instagram to see the difference @ silvertoothfarmhome. FAUX FLOWER TIP #4: Unlike real flowers where you can use a floral frog to secure stems into place, faux flowers work much better if you use chicken wire inside your vase. Using chicken wire lets you place flowers exactly where you want them and they stay put. FAUX FLOWER TIP #5: When arranging faux flowers (even if you aren’t mixing with real flowers), always, always add water to the vase. Seeing the water is another eye trick that will make your faux flowers look completely real.

In the long run this sabotages healthy efforts. The foods of choice are full of fat, salt, sugar, and calories. Weight goes up… you feel bad…you eat…it is a vicious cycle and needs to be broken. It takes work. Start by seeing your doctor; there may be a physical issue. Got a clean bill of health? Time to break the cycle! Stop & think: Take 15 minutes to think.
