LIFESTYLE LETTER
NOVEMBER 2020 PUBLISHER
Candice Berube | candice.berube@lifestylepubs.com EDITORIAL COORDINATOR
Where Would We Be Without You? WOW, WESTFIELD AND SOUTHWICK. How can it be that we are already nearing the end of the year? The holidays will be here before we know it, and pretty soon we will be writing out our 2021 resolutions. Prior to the craziness of shopping and celebrating, we want to take this time to pause and reflect. This year has been a wonderful journey with all of you, and we are grateful that we get to create this magazine every month and connect with you

and your family. Thank you for sharing your stories and for reading ours. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community, as without them, this magazine wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for the community service you do and for every time you recycle something or play a small part in keeping our city clean and thriving. We are so proud of where we live, and we know it wouldn’t be the same without each and every one of you. In this issue, we offer you the opportunity to reflect with us and spend some time being grateful for the people we have around us. Sure, planning a Thanksgiving dinner and traveling to see family can be stressful, and don’t worry, we’re here to help with some of the details. But don’t forget to look at each person around your table and remember how they have made a difference in your life. We wouldn’t be here without each other.

Harissa - Tunisian hot chili pepper paste
THIS FALL FAVORITE IS INSPIRED BY A DIP THAT WAS SERVED WITH ROASTED CAULIFLOWER AT A RESTAURANT IN NASHVILLE I USED TO VISIT WHEN I TRAVELED FOR WORK. The chef never would share the recipe but did let me know that it contained harissa. After trying for years, I replicated the recipe. Harissa is a Tunisian hot chili pepper paste made with roasted red peppers, spices, herbs, garlic, and olive oil. It has a rich, warm, spicy flavor, and only a little is needed. You can find harissa in the spice or condiment section of most large grocery stores. You can substitute with sriracha sauce, which also has a spicy, peppery taste. This recipe contains nutritional yeast, a deactivated yeast that is sold in the baking section or bulk section of grocery stores and health food stores. It has a sharp, cheesy flavor like parmesan. Try it over popcorn. For a simple fall or winter meal, this cashew crema pairs great with roasted cauliflower or root veggies and a roasted chicken. To save time, reheat a sectioned rotisserie chicken in a pan with a little olive oil and a few lemon slices. You can also try this as alternative to hummus with veggie sticks or tortilla chips.
i n g re d ient s + 1.5 cup raw cashews (soaked or boiled) + 1 roasted red pepper (about ¾ cup) from a jar + 1 cup non-dairy milk (almond, cashew, soy, or other) + 2 tbsp nutritional yeast + 1 tbsp lemon juice + 1 tsp harissa sauce (use an equal part sriracha sauce if you can’t find harissa) + ½ tsp paprika + ½ tsp salt
i n st r uc t ion s 1. Soak the cashews overnight in cold water or boil them for 35 minutes. Drain. 2. Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. The texture will be like a smooth hummus or creamy peanut butter and has a pretty orangy pink color. 3. Use immediately or store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week. 4. Makes about 3 cups.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPETITION TEAM? The Competition team is an amazing group of young dancers age 5-19. We have such an incredible bond that is based on teamwork. We work very hard to ensure all of our dancers and parents see the value in team over individual accolades, and the dancers are incredibly supportive of one another. Our team dancers do not live their lives in the studio. Team dancers are not required to take all styles to be considered for a team. This allows dancers to customize their own training as they see fit with the advice of the teaching staff. This system also allows for our dancers to be involved in outside activities such as sports. We also have an elite track in our competitive program that is a little more time. The elite dancers are those that do wish to spend more time in the studio. There is not one particular award or accolade that I would say I am most proud of. I am incredibly proud of my dancers as a whole. We have done very well over the years. We have won nationals in both 2018 and 2019. We were awarded Top Studio, Top Choreography numerous times. We have been awarded Most Entertaining, as well inducted into ADCC Studio of Excellence by two different competitions. The Mill at Crane Pond 77 Mill Street, Suite 123

THE LOST ART OF T H A N K YO U NOTES ARTICLE AUBREY SEWELL
IN A DIGITAL WORLD OF EMAILS AND TEXTS, THE SIMPLISTIC, AND ONCE STANDARD “THANK YOU” CARD HAS FADED. Does that mean we are no longer appreciative and grateful for the nice gestures that are extended to us? Absolutely not! We are just caught up in those casual platforms of communication, that we don’t take the time to sit down and give the time and attention to craft our heartfelt thanks in a way that shows purposeful thought. The written word is proof on a page and this is valuable for so many reasons. Gratitude spurns happiness, but thankfulness is tricky; the only way it is known is if it is verbally acknowledged. Writing it down is evidence of that feeling. Putting words on a page is also more intentional than shooting off a text or email. Communicating your thanks in the common, oversimplified fashion isn’t necessarily bad, but setting aside time be “old-fashioned” with pen and paper, demonstrates the value you place on what has been done for you. Plus, handwriting is an extension of who you are as a person. It breathes your life onto the page. It exudes your voice, your spirit and your message in a way that is uniquely yours. With the holidays just around the corner, there is quite a fine line
HELPFUL “THANK YOU” TIPS Send a thank you within a week of receiving someone’s gesture Use “snail mail” Be specific: mention the particular item or action you are grateful for Be genuine Personalize it: colored writing utensils, hand-lettering, or cards made from family photos Think outside the box. If writing REALLY isn't your thing, send a video of you verbally thanking them.
between the gratefulness of Thanksgiving and the endless spending of money on the endless lists for Christmas for people who anxiously have the “gimmes.” It’s important to navigate those waters, to cultivate a giving spirit as well as an appreciative heart, and establish an attitude of thankfulness. Receiving such a novelty through the mail is both meaningful and memorable and sending a special gift like this is a blessing to both the recipient and the sender.
