Those of us with furry family members aim to provide them optimal care. However, it can be a challenge with our packed daily schedules. Fortunately, two innovative women have established businesses that bring premium customer service right to their clients’ doorsteps—Paws Calls and Diamonds in the Scruff. These options provide a less stressful way to tend to your pets’ veterinary and grooming needs and get individual attention for both pets and their owners. Dr. Kara Ryczek, owner and operator of Paws Calls, completed an externship at a small animal hospital during her senior year at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and then was welcomed on as an employee during her final spring semester. During this time while she was gaining hands-on experience, Kara decided that becoming a vet would be a good fit for her. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tufts University in 2001. Just prior to the global pandemic, Kara fortuitously opened her own mobile vet business.

The decision to start a portable practice was based on a community need for high-quality, convenient pet care for clients. It also allows for flexibility for Kara, a mother of two children with many school and extra-curricular activities. Paws Calls provides an alternative that is less hectic and stressful for everyone. Kara shares, “I was excited to start my own practice and manage both the business and medical side on my own.” She says that being a vet is a career that demands “compassion, intelligence, and the ability to multitask, as well as working with people and animals every day.” Kara offers many services for pets, including annual physical exams, vaccinations, diagnostic testing, emergency visits, minor surgical procedures, and at-home euthanasia. She is hopeful that she will soon be able to add dental procedures to this extensive list. Kara is licensed in both Massachusetts and Connecticut. In addition to medical care, pet owners also need to attend to their animals’ grooming requirements. MaryAnn Moskey, owner of Diamonds in the Scruff, will bring her state-of-the-art mobile grooming van directly to your home or office. After working in the corporate world for many years, MaryAnn decided to follow her passion and opened a brick-and-mortar pet salon in 1998. Seventeen years later, she started a mobile grooming business. She describes it as a “self-contained salon on wheels.” MaryAnn’s mobile unit is climate-controlled with fresh, heated water for bathing and its own power supply. The vehicle is thoroughly vacuumed and sanitized after each appointment. This clean and convenient option allows for undivided attention and provides a calm, quiet setting for cats and dogs. Although she loves all of her clients, MaryAnn holds a particular appreciation for the service dogs that are in her care, such as police K-9s and dogs that assist their hearing-impaired owners. She shares, “Working with special dogs like that makes my heart happy that I can give back.” MaryAnn gives back in a multitude of ways. In addition to her busy work schedule, she utilizes her knowledge and years of experience to train new groomers and volunteers at a cat rescue. MaryAnn is also certified in pet CPR and first aid and offers classes in these areas to both pet owners and fellow pet care professionals. MassConn Training Center (MC Training Center) is a sports player's dream come true. The multi-sport facility, located at 153 Springfield Street in Agawam and close to the West Springfield line, prides itself on being an affordable sports training facility with topof-the-line equipment and trainers for all age levels. Owner Shad Hanrahan says he opened MC Training Center in 2018 because he saw "the opportunity to provide Western Massachusetts with quality, affordable youth sports training." Sometimes, the worst situations direct us to the best outcomes. For Todd Bajor, a death in the family led to a career that has brought him tremendous satisfaction. Todd’s grandmother passed away nine years ago, and without funds on hand to pay for a burial, her remains were returned to the family in an envelope. “I felt that if I could help somebody out with that in the future, I would do it. Fast forward: here I am,” says Todd, who has been an agent with New York Life since last year. Todd’s role as a dedicated husband and father is a driving force behind what he does. As he and his wife raise their family in West Springfield, he believes that planning for his family’s future is critical, and he finds that his work is a way to support families and protect people in difficult times. New York Life is currently promoting a theme of “protecting your love.” For Todd, that concept translates to caretaking of family. “It’s not about me — when I die, I’m gone. It’s about what happens after I’m gone and making sure that my family is taken care of properly. It’s about having that discussion of planning for the future and making sure that there is a plan.” The sooner, the better when it comes to exploring your insurance plan. Approximately half of the population doesn’t have life insurance, and another percentage doesn’t have the right amount of coverage. The disconnect occurs when people plan for the

costs of burial but don’t think about replacing their income. “Most families are two-income families, a lot of times what happens is that the surviving spouse has to sell the house and move into another community. That adds a lot of financial stress — on top of losing your spouse.” Todd points out that the current housing market makes the prospect of moving even more stressful — adding further aggravation to an already painful scenario. Many individuals don’t think about insurance needs while they’re young and healthy. However, says Todd, that’s exactly the right time to plan. “Once I started working in the field, I realized that NOW is the time,” he says, noting that unhealthy or older clients getting declined for coverage was a wakeup call. In addition, it’s important to review and update your coverage as your situation in life changes. Todd takes a holistic approach to insurance planning. “I essentially look at the big picture — what people have for protection versus what they need; also how they’re saving for the future. In addition, I make sure that in the end, their money outlives them and that they don’t outlive their money.” Todd has lived in West Springfield for more than ten years. Purchasing animals from stores and breeders isn’t the only way to become a pet owner. Rescuing animals is one of the best ways for pet lovers to make a difference in the lives of animals—and themselves. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 6.3 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year. Not included in that statistic are birds, hamsters,

lizards, rabbits, and other pets that are surrendered to shelters by owners who often purchased them from pet stores. These millions upon millions of animals need pet lovers to open their hearts and give them the homes they deserve. Payton Smith, a West Springfield native, is a prime example of someone who dedicates her life to helping animals as much as she can. Payton is currently a student at Holyoke Community College where she studies veterinary and animal science with the goal of becoming a veterinary technician. She is employed at Smithland Pet Center in Agawam, first beginning her tenure at that location in November 2020 when it was Dave’s Soda and Pet City. Payton’s love of animals has encouraged her to care for as many as she can over the years. Her family has owned dogs, cats, and hamsters, but she purchased her own bearded dragon, Dexter, in July 2018. “I began doing research on exotic pets when I became old enough to take care of something on my own, and it’s what I’ve wanted to do ever since,” says Payton. She has dedicated much time, effort, and love into giving Dexter a happy, healthy life. When Payton began working at Dave’s Soda and Pet City, she was given a lot of opportunities to adopt pets that were surrendered. Over the last two years, she has rescued a hamster, three guinea pigs, and a snake. Payton’s female corn snake, dubbed Medusa, was surrendered to a local vet to be euthanized after being bred for years, but Payton knew that Medusa deserved a happy life, and she couldn’t resist adopting the snake. Payton is determined to continue her lifelong passion to advocate for animals by working to help support both pets and their owners. Her mission has allowed her to influence the lives of many animals already, and the reach she has will only continue to grow as she begins her professional career in veterinary care. As Payton notes, “Rescuing is important because it gives the animal a second chance, gives the family a great pet, and provides the ability for the two of them to create an unconditional bond regardless of the pet’s age.”
