May 2022 PUBLISHER

Amanda Waterfield amanda.waterfield@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. Having confidence in oneself is a valuable characteristic, but even more important is the ability to see, appreciate, and celebrate the goodness and strength of other women. The impact of building up others is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration with those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. Without the love, support, guidance, and inspiration of my mom, Sara; my stepmom, Ruthe; my sister, Kristin; my daughter, Laura; and my rich network of friends who are like family, I would be a very different woman. I honor every one of us who has made it this far. You have my appreciation and respect.

CHEER S TO MOM!

Though many of us believe that every day should be Mother’s Day, that tradition has yet to take hold. MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH TAKES A DECIDEDLY MODERN TURN AT THE FEDERAL

For Mother’s Day 2022, the Federal will be offering Mother’s Day brunch that is certain to be a hit. Featuring custom cocktails and an elegant entree, it’s the perfect way to spend a few hours with your loved ones. While the traditional Bloody Mary and mimosa remain popular, why not savor The Lady or try Mum’s The Word? The Lady is a citrusy blend of Tito’s vodka, kiwi, mint, lemon, and fresh green pea. Mum’s The Word speaks to the floral notes of hibiscus syrup, citrus juice, and sparkling wine. The cocktails set the stage, but the true star of the meal will be Chef Anthony’s Italian Lobster Benedict. Grilled lobster tail and claw, prosciutto, roasted garlic, poached eggs, and hollandaise top a homemade focaccia bread. Brunch is not part of the Federal’s regular meal offerings, so be sure to secure your table by making a reservation early. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8. Call 413.789.1267.

R O N D A PA R I S H: BUSINESS, ESTATE, AND TAX LAW COMBINE IN A DYNAMIC SPRINGFIELD-BASED LAW PRACTICE

GUIDING CLIENTS THROUGH LIFE’S COMPLEXITIES Attorney Ronda Parish has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America for more than 30 years

ARTICLE BY AMANDA WATERFIELD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN SLACK

18

G IV IN G BAC K | FINACE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

As a business and estate attorney with a busy Springfield-based practice, Ronda Parish spends much of her time assisting clients navigating the intricacies of tax law, retirement, and estate planning. With a focus on elder law and issues, Ronda provides planning and direction for seniors, helping them preserve and manage their assets for their benefit as well as for future generations. Ronda maintains relationships with clients that last years or even generations. Oftentimes, an individual who retains Ronda’s services for one area of law will end up expanding the relationship to encompass other legal services. She didn’t start on the path of law. After graduating from Ithaca College, Ronda was hired by Mass Mutual as one of the company’s first pension consultants. She soon realized that she both wanted and needed a law degree to forge her path. While working full-time at Mass Mutual, she attended the evening law school program at Western New England University, where she focused on tax law and estate planning. She became a mother during her third year as an attorney, and the pace was intense. “Women lawyers have to be able to multitask effectively,” she says, noting that she was in the middle of negotiating a large corporate transaction in the birthing room during labor. She is now the mother of three daughters and has three grandchildren as well. Ronda’s interest in women’s issues led her to be one of the original board members of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts. “I do cohesive planning for families and their future generations,” says Ronda, noting that families are often uncomfortable or reluctant to discuss matters of money or inheritance. “Opportunities are lost by waiting until the last minute.” Outside the office, Ronda is an active horsewoman, competing in dressage events around the East Coast; you may also find her skiing in Vermont with her family. As an equestrian, she notes that those who own farms should focus on planning for estate management. “Real estate vs. business vs. retirement all funnels to the same place – ultimately, it’s planning for security and peace of mind for yourself and your future generations.” Ronda recommends working with an attorney you connect with on levels of trust, respect, and comfort. “It’s important to interview the attorney first – if you don’t click with her or him, continue your search for the right advisor and attorney, because this is really personal.”

The relationship between attorney and client can be a lengthy and multilayered partnership

Boutique MedSpa Brings Big City Expertise to Feeding Hills

Michelle Cory infuses the local beauty scene with elegance and experience ARTICLE BY JORDAN LEMARIER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN SLACK

22

B ACK STAGE | BEAU TY

Crossing the threshold of Boutique Med Spa reveals a space of quiet elegance, perfectly designed for the highly personalized services provided within. Soft carpeting, sparkling light fixtures, and beautiful floral canvases are a fitting reflection of the woman who has brought high-end skin services to Feeding Hills. Michelle Cory is the owner of Boutique Med Spa, open for just over a year now at 1325 Springfield Street in the center of Feeding Hills. Along with esthetician Erin Roch, Michelle brings to the area a range of skincare services designed to bring out the very best in their clients. In skincare, attention to detail is critical, and this attention is evident from the moment you walk through the door. Michelle is a registered nurse with 18 years of skin health experience. In the early part of her training and career, she provided advanced skin care solutions for clients in high-paced urban communities, first in California’s Silicon Valley, and more recently, in Boston. These residencies on both the East and West Coasts gave Michelle experience with leading-edge technologies and science-backed procedures. Personal attention is the hallmark of Boutique MedSpa. Whether your concerns are related to aging skin, acne, or you simply want to improve the quality of your complexion, the staff at Boutique MedSpa can make a difference. Michelle prioritizes the delivery of best care and services for each of her clients, provided in a personal, intimate manner. She designs a care plan for each client based on their individual concerns. Current services include noninvasive procedures

such as Botox, injectable fillers, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, Skinpen, IPL, Sculptra, and photofractionals. As the industry continually evolves with new technologies and treatment options, the med spa personnel are committed to adding the best to their list of services. Aesthetic offerings such as top-notch facials and peels are also a focus of the spa. Erin, a licensed esthetician, provides an array of facial services, including medical grade VI peels and micro-needling. Michelle performs all other skin services, as they require years of practice and knowledge beyond a short training or licensing. Both of these talented women take care to treat customers and their skin based on individual needs and goals. Those seeking premium skin care receive a complimentary in-depth consultation, assessing concerns to create a customized care plan. Knowing exactly what each client wants allows the Boutique MedSpa team to offer tailored treatments; sometimes what is needed is as straightforward as a facial, while other clients engage in combination therapy for synergistic results. Michelle shares, “I let the client make decisions that are most balanced for their time, their beauty dollars, and their belief system, allowing their inner beauty to shine through.” Solutions can include simplistic steps, such as a nightly cream, to laser treatments, facials, injections, or a combination of available options, as well as any needed after care for lasting results. For more information or to book an appointment, email theboutiquemedspa@gmail.com or call 413.295.8992.

ROSEWOOD HOME & GIFTS

On Wednesday, May 4, Rosewood Home & Gifts at 34 Elm Street in Westfield is celebrating its 5th birthday! Owner Jillian Knapp is looking forward to a party from 4pm - 7pm with cake, shopping, live music from Party of Two, and customer goodie bags. She told us more about the store, her employees, and what’s next.

FIVE YEARS IN WESTFIELD

26

O UR TOWN | SHOPPIN G

TELL US ABOUT ROSEWOOD’S LAST FIVE YEARS. “We’re excited about our anniversary,” Jillian says. “It’s a big milestone. I grew up in Westfield. When I bought the store, I was 23 years old. Coming into Rosewood is what Westfield used to be like in the 60s-80s. Customers appreciate

JIllian, with her husband, David, and son, Declan

bringing life back into these old buildings. Plus, Westfield rallies around the women-owned businesses here, and that’s encouraging! Take a look at downtown Westfield now – many storefronts are women-owned.” YOU MENTIONED BEING A WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS. YOU ALSO EMPLOY ALL WOMEN. THAT’S TRULY SIGNIFICANT! “Being a woman in business is a powerful thing in our little town of Westfield! I have 16 female employees from various backgrounds – even some of my former Westfield teachers! I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them. To have 16 women employees is huge. It’s a big thing for the economy, too. For a few of the women, this job is paying their bills – I am their main income stream – and that’s meaningful to me.” WHAT KINDS OF PRODUCTS ARE AT ROSEWOOD? “From fashion and fragrance to home and nautical, we sell all kinds of products at Rosewood. There’s something for everyone here, and I believe we have a good balance. We are getting new things every week and have a fast turnover. We try not to keep reordering the same things unless it’s a staple like Miss Piggy! You’d have to see her for yourself. There’s always something new here. And the customers love the free gift wrapping!”

JILLIAN KNAPP

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR ITEMS? “Gift items for occasions or holidays are always a hit. We began selling Vera Bradley before the holidays, and people love it! Clothing always does well, especially our ponchos. Seasonal decor is also sought-after, as it’s always changing – for the holidays and the seasons. Nautical items are huge in the summer.” YOU’RE CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS IN WESTFIELD AND COMING UP ON A YEAR IN HAMPDEN. IS THERE A THIRD LOCATION IN STORE FOR ROSEWOOD? “Yes! We opened our second location on Somers Road in Hampden almost a year ago. We hope to expand to a third location soon, so stay tuned!” rosewoodwestfield@gmail.com | 413.642.5365 FaceBook.com/RosewoodWestfield

With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. A well-known favorite of the locals, Cherry Creek feels like a city within a city with its urban oasis atmosphere. Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! to check out, such as the Food & Wine and Cherry Creek Arts festivals, you can pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few. As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. Whether your palate is yearning for a farm-totable, multi-course meal by an award-winning chef, or a burger and locally brewed craft beer with a side of fries, you’ll find flavor profiles to satisfy every craving. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Try the Colorado green chile breakfast burrito with a ginger liqueur spritz in the a.m., and take your turn at the pasta bolognese and ‘Tell Me I’m Pretty’ spirited libation in the p.m.

Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Map out your foodie excursions by dabbling in an al fresco rooftop cocktail with a mountain view, decadent-filled chocolates cafe-side, and feasting on lobster rolls, tacos & tequila, crepes and so much more in this Denver district. All of it is waiting for you to create your own local foodie tour to satisfy your epicurean side. Additionally, the Cherry Creek corridor boasts dozens of refined spas, salons, art galleries and boutique hotels in addition to Halcyon, such as Hotel Clio and The Jacquard Hotel & Rooftop. This Denver neighborhood favorite offers an entirely unique experience, providing intentionally elevated and customized services and local experiences. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. This four-story exhibition encompasses more than 75 unique installations, rooms and portals from 300 creatives. It tells a tale of what happens when a Denver city bus crashes into a rift during a rare cosmic event and opens a portal to four converged alien worlds. It has become one of the most talked about and nationally publicized attractions in Denver. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked. The eight-story architectural marvel stuns with its dramatic façade, in part thanks to last year’s $175 million renovation project that expanded and reimagined the campus with new, dynamic spaces to explore. Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Freely hike and roam this geological wonder on non-event days, but don’t miss an opportunity to watch a performance under the Colorado stars and see where The Beatles played in 1964 and U2 filmed Under a Blood Red Sky in 1983, an event that boosted the venue into the global spotlight. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet—blending urban charm and

industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience. Denver’s Lower Downtown micro district, coined the Dairy Block, is a historic pocket packed with culinary concepts and unexpected craftsman curations to explore. Peruse the featured events, stay overnight, and eat, drink and be merry. Visit Denver believes that travel makes the world a smaller and more connected place. It brings people together and fosters interaction among diverse cultures. We couldn’t agree more!

Find an unbelievable urban experience in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.
