Our November issue carries through it the theme of gratitude. The holidays are upon us and what better way to thank our hosts than with a fallthemed gift or a bottle of wine to enjoy at the table? Hannah Welker, manager of Gift-ology, located at 99 Springfield Road in Westfield, provides some suggestions for beautiful items that any host will appreciate. Hannah says that Milkhouse candles are a customer favorite and come in a variety of inviting scents, including Brown Butter Pumpkin and Limoncello, and sizes ($9–$30). For the Thanksgiving table, Hannah suggests the stemless wine glasses painted with fall leaves ($22 each), a pumpkin-themed mixing bowl ($44), a pumpkin platter ($22), and a serving tray with a multi-colored pumpkin design ($30). For the home, consider beautiful, decorative wooden pumpkins ($30) or the truly luxurious Barefoot Dreams throw blanket ($168). With appetizers, the dry, not-sweet white wine Chateau Bianca 2019 Dry Reisling ($19) is a smooth choice. For the main course, Carlo offers a few suggestions: the Oregon-grown Elouan 2019 Pinot Noir ($16) is “great with your turkey dinner and all the fixings,” as well as the Contour 2020 California Pinot Noir ($17), which Carlo describes as “fresh, silky, and phenomenal.” For those who prefer a wine “full of taut red fruits,” Carlo recommends the Terzetto 2020 Nebbiolo D’Alba ($15). When the meal wraps up and everyone is ready for dessert, Carlo suggests the VonSchleinitz 2020 Riesling’s ($17) “slightly sweet, spicy” flavor that pairs well with dessert. Wreaths With a Reason has autumn wreaths perfect for your home or gifting
Mary Ann Dietschler hardly could have imagined that a visit to a bookstore would lead her on a life-changing journey. More than ten years ago, the Agawam resident was poking around a used bookshop when she found a book on the Underground Railroad. The book sparked Mary Ann’s interest in saving people from oppression and got her thinking about what her role might have been at that time. These thoughts and ideas persisted, and Mary Ann decided to take action. Mary Ann originally supported the sex-trafficking organization Operation Underground Railroad, but their work is largely overseas, and she wanted to have a more local impact. She eventually connected with The Underground New England, which helps free hundreds of children and adults from trafficking. “I know we won’t eradicate trafficking,” says Mary Ann, “But knowing that we’ve helped a few victims begin the journey toward a life of freedom is extremely gratifying.” According to UGNE CEO and founder Annmarie Boulay, sex trafficking occurs in all communities.
The group’s mission spoke to Mary Ann. She began supporting them by sending regular donations, but realized that she could have a much greater impact. When a friend suggested that she could sell her home-crafted wreaths for profit, the pieces fell into place. Since its inception in 2014, Wreaths with a Reason has donated more than $100,000—money generated through creation and sale of decorative wreaths. “Mary Ann is a generous partner,” says Annmarie. “Every dollar that she gets, she sends off to the antitrafficking movement. Her generosity is remarkable, and her work is beautiful.” Annmarie notes that although the antitrafficking work is hard, within it there are beautiful things. “Mary Ann's work blesses us,” she says. In the years since Wreaths With a Reason was established, the group has grown to include five additional volunteers who have made and sold more than 2,100 wreaths. However, the true heart of the business is the tremendous respect and care that district manager Kristina Smith and her husband and service manager Josh Smith show for their customers and employees. The husband and wife team run the decades-old business as if it were their own. Kristina worked her way up from office manager to general manager to district manager, and is firmly invested in the wellbeing of her staff and customers. “I am the lady who wants to be able to help everyone to the best of my ability,” says Kristina. The company’s maintenance plans are just one example of how much customers mean to the business. “The maintenance plans we offer have not increased in price since 2013,” says Kristina. “While other companies have added fuel surcharges and temporary inflation surcharges, I have not—because I am a consumer myself and own a home. And I have parents and family that all live locally, and I would not want someone to charge them that.” Another part of Berkshire Heating & Air Conditioning’s customer service allows homeowners to sign up for a membership agreement, which provides yearly maintenance as

well as a guarantee that the company will come out within 24 hours if something goes wrong. It also means that members don’t pay overtime charges on holidays or weekends. Berkshire Heating & Air Conditioning also welcomes the calls of those who haven’t worked with them in the past, and Kristina is dedicated to helping in a timely manner. “What I express to people calling, especially during the busy times, is that our dispatch board is a puzzle and has moving pieces all day long,” says Kristina. “I try to fit everyone in in a timely fashion.” Increased safety measures and equipment shortages during the height of the COVID pandemic posed challenges to how Berkshire Heating & Air Conditioning did business. “We had to mix it up a bit and buy from different vendors and brands to get products to our customers,” says Kristina. Despite the challenges faced over the last couple years, the business has continued to grow and Kristina has built a team that she is grateful for. “My main goal is to create a fantastic customer experience and a positive work culture for my employees,” she says. “I want to be that company that is one step above all the others.” Berkshire Heating & Air Conditioning is located at 8 Capital Avenue in West Springfield. Farm stands are a hot spot for local produce and flowering plants as soon as they open in the spring in New England, but stands that stay open year-round also feature bounty to enjoy through the fall and winter months. Granny’s Place Farm at 844 Main Street, Agawam, is a longstanding area favorite, offering a plentitude of foods, produce, decorations, gifts, and flowers to be enjoyed at the Thanksgiving table and throughout the winter. Granny’s Place even sells Christmas trees delivered right to your door. Granny’s Place Farm is a year-round stand and store founded in 2009 by the Seldomridge family on farmland handed down from Jody Seldomridge’s grandmother, Doris, and operated by Jody’s husband Rick—both locals with deep roots in the community. Their son, Gavin, and daughter, Kyley, also work at the family business. Granny’s Place is a Local Hero farm member of Western Massachusetts’ Community Involved in Supporting Agriculture (CISA), grows its own vegetables, herbs, and fruit, and offers farm shares that give customers fresh produce for 17 weeks in June through September, as well as eggs from their hens year round. As a CISA farm, Granny’s Place accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payment and participates in the Healthy Incentives Program, making good nutrition widely available. The farm stand also accepts cash and credit cards, and offers gift cards. As we head into the holidays, Granny’s Place is a go-to spot for Thanksgiving fare with a wide selection
of pies, cider, jams, apple butter and applesauce from their apples, peanut butter, ice cream, and honey from their bees, which pollinate their crops. Granny’s makes their own ice cream and offers cones, dishes, shakes, sundaes, pints, and quarts. “For Thanksgiving, we have fresh cranberries, so a lot of people buy them to make their specialties,” Jody notes. “With many different people coming in to the stand, they share lots of ideas for recipes and about how they prepare their Thanksgiving meals.” Preordering pies from Granny’s Place for the holidays is very popular. Jody says, “We have pumpkin, apple, blueberry, chocolate crème, banana cream, pecan, very berry, coconut custard, and peach.” For November decorating, Granny’s Place features pumpkins, fresh flowers, mums, cornstalks, Indian corn, gourds, straw bales, and centerpieces for the Thanksgiving table. Jody also notes that, “November is the month of great respect for our veterans, and for Veterans Day we offer flowers, flags, and cemetery logs for remembrance.” Customers can purchase Christmas trees, including the popular new flocked varieties, starting Thanksgiving week. Cemetery logs, wreaths, kissing balls, and evergreen swags and roping round out Granny’s customers’ favorites for the fall and winter. • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
