Explore and Refresh
We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.
But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.
We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.
In the last few months I've really been analyzing my relationships, what I enjoy, how our family operates and what we love spending our time doing. The way I made this more clear, was to first focus on the things that I don't love spending energy on like way too many chores and not enough time! For you, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun dessert place we've never been to before in a different part of town.
Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a long, leisurely trail or in a crisp new book-ahh- flipping through pages, what a "novel" idea! Or you can settle on that trip you’ve been thinking about in a land far, far away or indulge your curiosity with that hidden getaway gem right next door. Maybe you will venture out in service in your community or abroad to focus on the needs of others, which is always a balm to the heart. Whatever you do, make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. It's time to Explore and Refresh!

SETON HALL PREP-SERVING
THE COMMUNITY LOCALLY AND ABROAD
Seton Hall Prep, or more simply, “The Prep”, is more than just a place of learning -- it is a place of service and they exemplify this through their generosity to their community and the world outside of it.
The passion for giving back runs deep at SHP, and starts in the classroom. Students are required to take theology classes alongside their academic requirements, where they learn a more practical approach to faith.
When speaking to the Director of Campus Ministry, Sharon Rondinella, she described the school’s approach as having three prongs. The first is liturgy, or what you would think of as traditionally Catholic things, such as masses, prayers, or the receiving of sacraments.
The second, community service, has shown itself in every facet of the school’s involvement with their local organizations. Just in the past month, SHP has hosted various meet-ups with the West Orange chapter of We’ve Got Friends, an organization that aims to provide kids, teens, and young adults with developmental disabilities a space to socialize and have fun. They would host soccer games, or invite members to watch the dress rehearsal of their school musical.
SHP’s students also serve their school community. In a recent collaborative effort with West Orange High School, they successfully completed a park cleanup for Earth Day. Administration in Campus Ministry hope to expand this effort and clean up various sites around West Orange and other surrounding towns.
The school has also partnered with Catholic Charities. Students bring in food and donations to school, where they are brought to people in need, such as the local St. Mary’s.
Most notably, Seton Hall Prep demonstrates ministry through the third pillar: their retreats. Since 2015, they have been offering trips to Guatemala for where they can put what they have learned into action. They also offer a sponsorship program for students who need it, as they aim to make this trip accessible for as many students as possible. Having partnered with Hope of Life, participants stay on a compound for the duration of the week-long trip.
One of their earlier trips was to Zacapa, where over the course of four years, they were able to build both a soccer field and a house. In 2017, they arrived in Santa Rosalia on the heels of a new water installation. There, they remodeled a school, helping to paint and to build a computer room. This year they want to build a safe/reliably structured home for a grandma who is caring for her grandson.
“Just the bus ride [to the compound] is an eye-opening experience,” says the director. “The students see poverty they’ve never seen before.”
This kind of culture shock is jarring, but it prepares them for the reality of mission work. They are not there for pleasure or to explore on their own -- the purpose of this trip is to give to others rather than yourself. Once students land and begin the ride to the compound, there is an “almost immediate” realization about the trip, and that it is not just a time to travel.
When asked about the effects of the mission trip on students, we were pleased to hear that they have been myriad. The director describes the transformation that occurred with one of their sponsored students. Communicating with faculty through text, his responses went from short and succinct to a long message about how the trip had affected him, in which he showed a real passion for service.
“[People] come to support the teams, but when it comes to just being a loving…faithful person, [students] need an outlet for that,” said the director of the mission trip. “I think Guatemala… opens their heart up to realize there are a lot more people [they] could be serving. Their world breaks open.”
Through this trip, she says that students learn about the differences between having, needing, and wanting something. She compares this to having multiple pairs of shoes: “When they… see they have five pairs of sneakers, they know they don't need all five.” They have them, but they don’t need them, and they can use the privilege they have to help better the world around them. Seeing the reality of the world they live in allows them to better appreciate what they have and how they can give to others.
Not only does this have an impact on their experience as a student, but it prepares them for life outside of education. The school’s multi-pronged approach to service helps students to grow into strong adults grounded by faith.
“You can see the compassion in these kid’s hearts that will grow throughout their life,” the director says. We can see it, too.
“I THINK GUATEMALA… OPENS THEIR HEART UP. THEIR WORLD BREAKS OPEN.”
FARMER’S
TRIP Market
A FRESH TAKE ON CLASSIC TRADITIONS
ARTICLE BY ANGELINA SILVESTER
Walking into the marketplace, I was greeted with the sounds of bright, booming pop music and the smells of fresh baked goods. At one tent, people lined up to buy homemade bread; at another, they stopped to peruse baskets of apples, or to quite literally smell the flowers. Local vendors made friendly conversation, and the entire space had an atmosphere of peace.
This was my experience at the farmer’s market in Montclair, an event held every Saturday at the Walnut Train Station. One of the first towns to host a marketplace, they started sharing local produce back in 1993, and it has grown into the town staple we can see today.
Farmer’s markets have been around for hundreds of years. Some of the first marketplaces were started in Egypt, and became popular in the United States in the 1600s. As of late, they have seen a boom in popularity and expanded beyond the sale of fruits and vegetables, with people coming to seek other locally made products.
While West Orange does not have its own farmers market there is one place in town where you can have a delightful experience. Grace Garden, a market created and run by West Orange high school student Justin Brister, started as a small backyard plot and has grown into a full-size vegetable garden. In season you can find squash, tomatoes, melons, and more. Not only does he sell what he has grown, but he also offers tours of the garden and shows people how to grow their own vegetables.
“If you are looking for a way to give back to your community...”
As well as Grace Garden, there are other markets scattered around New Jersey, including Millburn and South Orange, making this an easy way to spend a day! If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, there is no better place to go than to a farmer’s market. Purchases directly benefit the seller and help to grow small businesses in the area.

Fireworks are back for beautiful New Hope, PA this July 4th. New Hope, PA will display their fireworks for July 4th over the walkable New Hope-Lambertville Bridge. This is a toll bridge of 1055 feet in length. This is an
indelible walk that pedestrians can walk for free. Walk, talk and enjoy this magnificent view over the Delaware River. The Bridge Authorities Commission have recorded as many as 14,000 pedestrian crossings on the bridge on a single weekend day. If you are one of the lucky visitors who snag a room at the infamous Ghost Light Inn ( ghostlightinn.com) you will be in the heart of these fun and long awaited activities. Ghost Light refers to the standing lamp left burning
on the stage when not in use. This was left on to appease ghosts with light to perform onstage when the theater is dark. The theme of the ghost light runs throughout the Inn.
The amenities delight all who have a reservation at this fine boutique hotel. Riverside rooms have Juliet balconies. Canine companions are welcomed. Cushioned beds, water bowls and emergency food supply and leash are at your disposal. There are 12 rooms in the Ghost Light Inn.
The Carriage House has three rooms which are located along the Delaware River and Aquetong Falls. It’s hard to believe by looking at the Falls but the truth is they are man-made. Each room is unique with its own private walk-out balcony, cafe table and two rockers.

Slightly older family can enjoy the “Broadway” shows at the Bucks County Playhouse ( bcptheater.org) The current shows will be listed.

This is a sure fire memory collecting time that will be extensive.
Did you know that New Hope PA is home to historic and extremely important parts of the Underground Railroad that can be visited today. Imagine walking the same ground that Harriet Tubman walked on barefoot. From Bristol to Quakertown, these significant sites are everywhere. They are revered and cared for so we can see their brilliance today. These are houses and farms that kept slaves safe on their journey to freedom. Harriet Tubman’s statue is part of this 30 minute drive from beautiful New Hope to Bristol. Not only educational but incredible sites to embrace as part of the making of America on America’s Birthday.
