I grew up with basset hounds, Pete and Rose. Occasionally, they’d take us for a walk. They’d fumble along, enjoying the sights. Pete was a big baby. Down one street, there was a dog who fiercely protected his yard. Pete would freeze. No amount of pulling or coaxing would convince him to move. The only way to successfully take a walk was to avoid that street. This is a picture of our brains. The limbic brain, the “fight or flight” portion, is Pete. The prefrontal cortex, the rational, analytical part, was me pulling in vain. Some psychologists explain this as “the rider” and “the elephant.” The rider’s intelligence is superior to the elephant’s. Conversely, the elephant’s strength is superior to the rider’s. Though the rider may tug and pull, if the elephant wants to go in the opposite direction (or sit still, like Pete), game over. If you want to make progress (lose the weight, save for the thing), it’s not enough to reason with yourself. If it was that easy, we’d all have six packs and padded bank accounts. You’ve got to motivate the elephant.

Beyond that, you must clear the path. It was easy to convince Pete to go outside, but remember that dreaded road? The only way to be successful was to choose a path free of obstacles. Progress can be made if we do three things: speak to the rider, motivate the elephant, and clear the path. Here’s an example: My 10th wedding anniversary is approaching. We’d love to take a trip. My “rider” can do the math and determine how much to save, but setting money aside monthly means doing less now. My elephant isn’t convinced it’s worth it. Motivating the elephant requires an emotional connection. “Trip” isn’t super motivating. My elephant is interested, but bored. But if we dream of a specific resort, a photo of which I save as my phone’s home screen, my elephant is intrigued. When I look at that picture, I visualize myself there. Is it worth it to skip takeout today, to sit on THAT beach next year? Yep. We’ve motivated the elephant. But I’ve still got an obstacle. Without clearing the path, my rider is left to transfer money into savings every month. Odds are, I’ll forget or the elephant will win the instant gratification battle along the way. However, if I strike while the iron’s hot (right when the elephant is motivated and the rider has calculated the monthly savings) and set up an automatic monthly transfer to a designated “vacation savings” account, I’ve hit the trifecta. The path is clear and the savings will happen automatically. We’re set up for success. We could run this example with so many things. Remove the junk food from the cabinet. Lay out the morning’s workout clothes the night before. Clearing the path supports positive change. When combined with motivating the elephant and directing the rider, the sky’s the limit. Tokyo native Kumi Alderman was 22 years old when she opted out of her initial plan to become a teacher and instead took a job as a tour guide. She’d grown up not far from Hiroshima and knew next to nothing about the world beyond her home in the Japanese countryside. However, her worldview quickly expanded as she traveled across Europe, North and South America, and Asia. “When I was growing up, we went to the Hiroshima museum every year. Our teachers would tell us not to hate people. Hate the war, but not the people. Being friends was the key to peace, so be friends with everyone. My teacher’s words stuck with me,” she recalls. “After that job [as a tour guide], my eyes, ears, and nose opened – and wow, this is the world!” Eventually, Kumi got married and moved to the United States to raise a family. The Aldermans came to Knoxville in 2013, after which Kumi experienced two major car accidents that left her unable to bounce back to work. It was a tough time, and her usual cheerful disposition started to sour. “When you’re busy working and raising kids, you don’t always think about what you want to do, but I had to sit and wait to heal. I started thinking that if I’d died, no one would’ve remembered me!” she says, laughing. “My family and friends, yes, but I hadn’t given back to the world yet. I wanted to share more of our culture so people could learn about us and we could be friends.” Kumi started brainstorming ways to turn her passion into something tangible, and soon her memories of being a tour guide – particularly visiting so many festivals in other countries – sparked an idea. “At all those festivals, everyone’s guard is down and they’re having a good time, so I thought maybe a festival would connect more people in East Tennessee,” she says. “And maybe we can bring not only Japan, but also China, Taiwan… everyone! I was so depressed from the car accidents and didn’t have positive thinking for so long. It was such a bad time, but once we started talking about doing the festival, that changed. I thought maybe a festival would bring us together.” By we, she means her husband, Dave, Christeen Silavong, and their friend Leroy Kautz, owner of Wah Lum Kung Fu of Knoxville. Leroy grew up a student of Chinese Kung Fu and studied under martial arts pioneer Pui Chan, who was instrumental in bringing the Wah Lum style from China to the United States in the late-1960s. Leroy eventually became an instructor alongside his master in Orlando, Florida. By 1994, he and his family settled in Knoxville and immediately started teaching Kung Fu at the YMCA. Within the year, Leroy opened his own school on Carr Street in Bearden. “When you look at contemporary martial arts, it’s more about competition and for show. It doesn’t go into philosophy and history, because Chinese martial arts is really about health and peace, moral character, and bettering the self,” says Leroy. “The word Kung Fu means hard working man, skills acquired through hard work and patience.”

As the idea for the Asian Festival started to take shape, Kumi reached out to Leroy to see how he and his students could participate. “Lion dancing is a traditional part of Kung Fu, so when Kumi found out we did that, she wanted it for a potential festival,” says Leroy. “She came over and we had tea, and my mission was both to spread martial arts and the Kung Fu tradition but also to promote peace. Her view of the Asian Festival was to be a friendly way to connect the East and West, so our purposes aligned.” Leroy and his students perform at the festival each year, showcasing various styles of Kung Fu as well as performing a traditional lion dance. With plenty of support, particularly from the international community at the University of Tennessee, the Knox Asian Festival held its first celebration in 2014 at Krutch Park with approximately 20 booths and 3,000 visitors. The following year, attendance more than doubled, so in 2016, they moved the festival to Market Square with 15,000 in attendance. In 2017, the number of festival goers doubled again, then increased to more than 40,000 in 2018. In 2019, the festival moved to World’s Fair Park, added a film festival, and celebrated with more than 60,000 people attending.

The pandemic kept the festival on hiatus for two years, but it returns this month to World’s Fair Park with 13 countries represented, 28 food vendors, a growing list of performers, and a passport program with interactive activities for kids. The Knox Asian Festival kicks off with a parade of nations at 10 a.m., starting at the park’s water fountain and leading into the amphitheater. “People come from all over the country – dancers and performers come in, and visitors have their family members come in from out of town, so it’s like a family reunion for Asian families,” says Kumi, who now serves as the executive director of the Asian Culture Center of Tennessee. “The festival helps connect people with one another, especially international UT students. It’s not just one day. After the festival, they stay connected with one another.” Kumi encourages families to enjoy all the festival has to offer, especially the food. “Young kids are excited to share their culture with friends of other nationalities. It breaks down a barrier,” she says. “I truly believe that kids will remember the food they eat at the festival. Villages & Peaks of the Lauterbrunnen Valley

Nestled in the Bernese Alps, about eight miles south of Interlaken, is a sweeping Swiss landscape with 72 waterfalls, hundreds of acres of untouched meadows, and looming rocky cliffs with tiny villages accessible on foot or by cable car. If you are looking for a postcard-perfect destination in Switzerland, look no further than the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Lauterbrunnen is a municipality that encompasses a collection of towns and hamlets, such as Gimmelwald, Mürren, Stechelberg, and Wengen, among others. The village of Lauterbrunnen, complete with its own waterfall (Staubbachfall), is where you’ll want to park and walk around a bit, unless you plan ahead and grab lodging at a local cozy hotel. Visitors can rent bikes or buy provisions for the day’s hike, as there are cafes, restaurants, shops, and a beautiful view no matter where you look.

Thrill Walk at Birg

Schilthorn

Stechelberg is particularly worth visiting as it sits at the foot of the Schilthorn peak, which, at close to 10,000 feet, boasts a sweeping panoramic view of the Bernese Alps and Mont Blanc. Catch the gondola at Stechelberg, right in front of the Mürrenbachfall, the highest waterfall in Switzerland, and enjoy all four stops not accessible by public roads – first to Gimmelwald (a farming village with plenty of footpaths), then to Mürren, next to Birg (where brave souls can attempt the Thrill Walk), and finally to Schilthorn. Fans of the James Bond movie franchise will want to visit Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant at the summit of Schilthorn, as it was a filming location for the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. In between the panoramic views along the walkways are statues and other snippets from the film, along with an exhibition with movie memorabilia on a lower level of the building. (Schilthorn.ch/en) Opposite Schilthorn, on the eastern edge of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, is Jungfraujoch, home to the Sphinx Observatory, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001. The summit sits at nearly 12,000 feet and is accessible via railway and cable cars from multiple villages in addition to Lauterbrunnen, such as Interlaken and Grindelwald, a popular tourist destination east of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Coined the “Top of Europe”, Jungfraujoch is more than a peak from which to view the longest glacier in the Alps. It’s home to an ice sculpture exhibit, a Lindt chocolate shop, and a few spots to grab a bite to eat or warm up with a cup of coffee. For the adventure seekers, the full Jungfrau region experience offers paragliding, trail running, mountain biking, and, in winter, all the skiing one could want. (Jungfrau.ch/en-gb) Planning a trip to the Swiss Alps can get complicated when trying to navigate traffic, weather, and discerning what routes require a gondola or railway, or what areas are only accessible on foot. However, if you study the map and keep the itinerary loose, there will be plenty of time to explore the beauty and diversity of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

ENA HAD a lot of pain in her knee from a torn meniscus, even after having surgery to repair it. The knee pain caused her to walk in such a way that her lower back and hip also started hurting. The mission of the Knoxville History Project (KHP) is to research, preserve, and promote the history and culture of Knoxville, Tennessee. Through research and engaging programs, KHP tells the city’s stories, focusing on those that have not been previously told, and those that connect the city to the world. KHP’s stories, programs, and publications educate and help residents and visitors understand the city’s past and its complicated but dynamic heritage, and also to inspire an appreciation for the city’s culture. Learning about a city’s history makes one more aware of its geography and its buildings, leading to a better sense of place. KHP’s downloadable driving tours of Near-West, North, East, and South Knoxville provide opportunities for residents to discover and appreciate the many historical landmarks found throughout Knoxville that can be seen easily from a vehicle or explored on foot. The 8.2-mile-long tour of East Knoxville starts at Caswell Park off Magnolia Avenue, makes a short loop around Parkridge, heads east along Magnolia towards Chilhowee Park, taking in Burlington with its unique Speedway Circle. The tour proceeds over to the Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum via MLK Jr. Avenue, and finally meanders toward downtown via Dandridge Avenue and MLK Boulevard, concluding close to where the tour began on Magnolia Avenue.

Parkridge, once part of Park City, existed as an incorporated community from 1907 to 1917. The neighborhood is known for its late Victorian architecture, especially that of George Barber, who was a partner in the original development of the neighborhood. Perhaps the best-known architect ever to live in Knoxville, Barber lived in several different places in his favorite neighborhood, but he’s most associated with the colorful house at 1635 Washington Avenue on the corner at Monroe.

Knoxville Botanical Gardens Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum’s history dates back to the 1780s when it became Revolutionary War veteran David Howell’s farm and orchard. It constituted the origins of the durable Howell Nursery, which started as a business in the 1870s and served as a prolific source of trees and ornamental plants for the region until it closed in 2002. It is now a 47-acre public garden run by the nonprofit KBGA and notable for its encyclopedic array of trees and shrubs and for some unusual original buildings, like the circular stone huts, and the “Secret Garden,” inspired by the children’s book written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Haley Heritage Square in Morningside Park, off Dandridge Avenue, is home to a large monument to Roots author Alex Haley, who spent his later years in Knoxville. When it was installed in 1998, the creation by California sculptor Tina Allen was reportedly the largest statue of an African American in the world. A rarity for most artworks, it was designed so that children can climb on it. Across the street from the statue is

the Italianate-style Mabry-Hazen House, built in 1858 and where three generations of the same family resided. Also nearby on Dandridge Avenue is the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, which has operated as an extensive library and museum for African American history and culture since 1975. It’s the final home of James and Ethel Beck, who were an inspiring couple to Knoxville’s African American community for much of the 20th century. James Beck was the state’s first black postal clerk, and was the leading founder of Knoxville’s chapter of the NAACP; Ethel, a former tennis champ, was founder of an orphanage for Black children. slb the agency NIL deals are changing the landscape of college athletics Last month you heard from Derrick Furlow Jr., Chris Lofton, and Fred White. The theme that echoed from their interview was all of the knowledge gained and new opportunities created since they were college athletes. In June 2019, a decision by the US Supreme Court forever changed the future of college athletes when it permitted them to make money from their own name, image, and likeness (NIL). Many will agree with us at the agency when we say it was about time! The NCAA controlled the money generated by college athletics for years but the Supreme Court decision was a welcome disruptor in the industry. The breakdown of this monopoly has significantly benefited the players and the athletic programs utilizing NIL deals. Fewer than 2% of NCAA Athletes go on to be professional athletes. This statistic is surprising to many people we have encountered, but it emphasizes the excitement with the increasing opportunities that are now available to the everyday athlete. I sat down with Derrick Furlow, Jr. to understand his take on the impact of NIL contracts.

MITAL: FOR THE PARENT OF A STUDENT ATHLETE, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EDUCATING THEIR CHILDREN ON THE IMPORTANCE OF NIL CONTRACTS?

Mital: DERRICK, WHAT IMPACT WILL OR HAS NIL

Derrick: This is a great time to be a business owner or professional. Marketing has changed drastically and we are surrounded by the power of influencers and social media promotions. NIL contracts allow these owners and professionals to scale their growth while promoting the growth of the student athletes in their respective communities. It also allows them to scale their growth by city, state or even nationally. This is done by selecting the right athletes whose name, image and likeness align with their mission, values or product that needs promoting.

CONTRACTS HAD ON STUDENT ATHLETES?

Derrick: This opportunity is a gamechanger. Under the right leadership student athletes can start young to get the advantage of setting up their unique brand. They can get ahead in all aspects of life and business while they focus on their passion for the sport they love. The other 98% of athletes pour their heart, soul and time into the game and this is their chance to also use the name, image and likeness they work hard to create.

Derrick: Under the right leadership, parents will have the opportunity to help utilize these NIL contracts to provide their student athletes with more independence, opportunities and long-term security than ever before. Parents have often dedicated as much time, passion and expense into supporting their student athlete over the years and this can often be taxing to continue indefinitely (especially when they are raising a number of talented children). This is unchartered territory for many parents and daunting, nonetheless, it is a critical time to stay involved in helping navigate their children to the right leadership and team to help them.
