In William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 98, he wrote that April, when dressed in all its form, puts “a spirit of youth in everything.” That rings true, doesn’t it? Once the last winter snap has passed and afternoon temperatures are comfortably and consistently in the 70s, we feel alive and ambitious. We tackle projects in the yard and make summer plans, and suddenly, with little effort, the months ahead feel full of possibility. It was fitting, then, to feature Dave and Katie Crawford of Rapid Expeditions in our April issue. This adventurous couple built a business taking groups whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River, hosting cycling events, and running a kayak school year-round. If you’ve never enjoyed the thrill of whitewater rafting, or if you’re in need of kayak instruction, then now’s the time. Pat Guilliams was a legendary figure in Women’s golf. When a young person tells his parents that, when he grows up, he wants to ski in the winter and kayak in the summer, it’s customary for the parents to wonder how that translates to responsible adulthood. Fortunately for Dave Crawford’s parents, they wouldn’t have to wonder for long. With a degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Tennessee and a calling to build a life around outdoor recreation, Dave jumped at an opportunity to buy an abandoned rafting company that was up for sale in 2007. “I’d never been in a raft, so I didn’t know anything about it. But, I put in a proposal and they said sure,” he says. “It was a huge undertaking, buying school buses and rafts and making it work. It used to be Big Pigeon Expeditions, but I didn’t want it to be a name based on location. I thought Rapid Expeditions could go somewhere else. I created a kayaking school too, so I was thinking that in the off-season we could go somewhere else.” Seven years later, a woman named Katie from Tampa, Florida, was visiting her parents in Sevierville. Her father had planned a two-week kayak trip in the Everglades, so to help him prepare, Katie found a free Wednesday night roll clinic nearby. She put in a call to inquire about it. “This guy answers the phone, and he was kind of a jerk. He saw I had a Florida phone number and I’d said I didn’t have much whitewater experience, so he was trying to talk me out of coming,” she recalls. “We still went and the gentleman on the phone is now my husband.” They laugh at this story because little did they know at the time that a prickly first conversation would morph into a marriage, parenthood, and a growing outdoor recreation business that brings a lot of joy to adventure seekers each year. Katie is a board-certified nurse practitioner and on faculty at the University of Tennessee’s School of Nursing. She’s also the “behind-the-scenes” person and keen cyclist at Rapid Expeditions, giving rapid a whole other definition. “Our main business is offering whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River. It’s a dam-release river, so we have a contract with the power company from CONTINUED >

May to Labor Day weekend,” says Katie. “We do year-round kayak instruction and offer two main biking events each year.” Top (and budding) cyclists enjoy the annual Waucheesi Bike race, a spring event in Tellico Plains that boasts a 45-, 63- or 88-mile option with incredible terrain and spectacular views. The HARDford 50 (and HARDERford 75) runs in August. Proceeds benefit Grassy Fork Rural Medical Services Club and the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club. For water-bound adventure seekers, whitewater rafting is the best option. It’s family-friendly and catered to the youngest participant’s abilities. Whether on vacation from out of town or an outdoor

activity for locals, Rapid Expeditions can host up to four trips per day. The route is fewer than five miles, which translates to about two hours time on the water. “We have a commercial permit to be on the Pigeon River. There are Class III and IV rapids, but the lower Pigeon is very calm,” says Katie. “You have to be eight or older for an upper session and three or older on the lower.” For what it’s worth, Dave and Katie’s four-year-old son Bear has his own kayak, which he takes on the lower portion of the Pigeon River. “We’ve always tried to keep it simple,” says Dave. “We have a perfect score on our

reviews. Simple and fun. We show people a good time.” In keeping with what Dave told his parents, he is indeed kayaking in the summer and skiing in the winter. “We have kayaking classes year round, and I work on the ski patrol at Ober Gatlinburg. I’ve done that for 20 years,” says Dave, who’s also an ACA Certified Kayak Instructor. “Since I’ve made it work, my parents don’t mind so much.” “This is a labor of love,” Katie adds. “It’s the same with our guides. City Fire Department at 100 In 1985, a University of Tennessee marching band paraded south along Henley Street with Church Street Methodist in the background. The event marked the centennial of the City Fire Department’s incorporation as a professional entity. Of course, the city had been battling fires since Knoxville was founded in 1791, but before 1885, firefighting was managed on a largely volunteer basis. Shared by Knoxville Fire Department.

Promenade In the 1950s, the City’s new Promenade project was a bold attempt to modernize—and to some extent suburbanize—downtown shopping. The innovation promised to make shopping at places like Kimball’s, Woodruff’s, Fowler’s, and J.C. Penney as easy as it would be in any suburban strip mall. Rear access to the Gay Street stores from the parking lot behind is still there, of course, but now a multi-story garage. State Street is on the right. All the buildings on its east side are gone. Gay Street In the 1950s, the city also attempted to create a better experience for shoppers by adding a long, covered awning above storefronts along Gay Street. This photograph, presenting what looks to be an early morning view looking north from the 400 block toward the Sterchi Building in the distance, was taken by the City Fire Department as it battled a fire at the Terminal Building in 1974. The awnings, erected on both sides of the street, creating a tunnel-like effect, affording shoppers some protection from the elements every day, as well as at special events like the annual Christmas parades. Terminal Building Fire The Union Terminal, a stylish marble-front building at Gay and Wall, was a multi-line bus station combined with a shopping arcade, stretching back to State Street. A Manley and Young design, it was one of downtown’s busiest places until the 1950s, when the major bus lines abandoned it to build elsewhere. It was underused before it burned in 1974. back, I had a meeting on March 5, 2015, with a long-term client who passed along a question from their son-inlaw: “Ask Eric what he knows about Bitcoin.” This was the second time in the span of a month that I had been asked that question. I’d heard the word before, but that was about it. Looking back through my Amazon purchase history, I can see that I ordered a book on April 8, 2015, called the “Bitcoin Big Bang”. That’s where a chapter of my financial exploration began. Here is an attempt to explain Bitcoin in 100 words: First, the internet created a world where you could buy things from people you don’t know or meet. That lack of transactional trust can cause problems. Traditional money can be spent twice with some creativity, which can hurt one party in the transaction. Bitcoin, being decentralized, prevents one party from unilaterally canceling a transaction. Second, there is a limited supply of Bitcoin available. Only 21 million can ever exist. Dollars on the other hand can be mass produced (see the last 14 years) at the will of government officials (89 words!) How can anything have value that doesn’t exist? Are addresses on the internet real and tangible? Can they be valuable? The internet removed history’s past requirement of tangibility as a necessity to value. By the way, carinsurance.com sold for $49.7 million back in 2010. I cannot see the future well enough to know if you should buy Bitcoin. However, I do believe you should explore the idea and see if it plays a role in your broader investment and planning strategy. She suggested we head downtown, but that’s an activity we had done before. Spontaneously, I suggested we head home and drive to Chicago to see a “big city” firework show. After a quick “why not conversation,” we raced home, packed, and headed north. The following day we rolled into the Windy City and watched fireworks at the Navy Pier roughly 24 hours after our spontaneous poolside conversation. A Q&A WITH KENT DAVIS TELL US WHAT SPECIAL GROWERS IS. Special Growers is a program of Special Opps, Inc, a 501c3 Tennessee Corporation with the mission of providing job training and employment opportunities to disabled young adults in Blount County.

DESCRIBE HOW SPECIAL GROWERS GOT STARTED. A group of us parents to several recently-graduated high school special needs students initially formed Special Growers as the solution for a less than encouraging post-graduation question and observation: first, “what’s next for my child?” and second, “there really isn’t much.” Rather than allowing their disabled young adults to fall through the cracks of a work world not designed to offer a patient and understanding environment— the kind of environment that such youth of varying abilities need to develop and reach their potential— we parents decided to take action and form the missing piece to the puzzle. From the combined hopes and initiative of us parents, a realistic and operable plan was formed, and Special Growers was born.

DESCRIBE THE OVERALL MODEL FOR HOW THIS WORKS. In short, we grow and sell culinary herbs and cut flowers, and through that process, we provide year-round job training and employment. Today, Special Growers employs a dedicated staff of 14 disabled young adults, under the guidance of a Garden Manager and ten adult volunteers, with 80% of our staff being disabled. Special Growers works closely with four local area high schools: Alcoa, Heritage, Maryville, and William Blount, to provide a School Work-Study Program for special education students during the school year. The School Work-Study Program provides opportunities to learn job skills and gain experience of how to work in the gardens. During the summer months of June and July, Special Growers provides summer jobs to any disabled young

adult in the area. This summer, 30 staff members were hired for summer employment.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PRODUCTS SPECIAL GROWERS PRODUCES? We provide about ten culinary herbs typically found in a restaurant environment, and our parsley is very popular. We also grow flowers for fresh flower bouquets such as zinnias, sunflowers, snapdragons, celosia, and much more.

HOW ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SOLD? We work with several local chefs in Maryville and Knoxville who buy our products for their restaurants. We offer the highest quality herbs produced, gathered, and tended with care by our staff. Special Growers meet chef requests for same-day delivery within 2 hours of harvest, ensuring the freshest herbs for their kitchens.

CAN SPECIAL GROWERS BE FOUND AT UPCOMING EVENTS? Yes, we participate in several annual events. For example, this month, we will be set up at the East Tennessee Maker’s Market with herb plants, Mother’s Day herb pots, and cut-flower bouquets. This market takes place April 30th on the campus of Maryville College at the McArthur Pavilion. In addition, Zackary McMurray, a Special Grower employee, will have his own booth offering his birdhouses and bird feeders that have been hand-painted by 16 local artists. From Pro Se Litigant to Paralegal An Interview with Paralegal Sherri Miljenovic ARTICLE BY MITAL D. PATEL

After reviewing Sherri’s resume, we were impressed, and the interview just reinforced that feeling. Client relations are a core value for our firm. We wanted highly-motivated and passionate individuals that truly wanted to help the clients we served. Oftentimes, this means mitigating the emotions and stress many of our clients experience. Sherri had been a stay-at-home mom who homeschooled her six children. Time management, patience, and organization could immediately be checked off the list of what we were looking for. However, Sherri’s experience as a Pro Se litigant was what sealed the deal. Hear what Sherri shared with me:

TELL US WHY YOU CHOSE TO BECOME A PARALEGAL? I never dreamed that I would enter the legal field as a paralegal. However, due to some of the most unfortunate circumstances in my life, I found myself desperately attempting to navigate the legal system as a Pro Se litigant. For various reasons, I was unable to retain an attorney when the high conflict post-divorce matters dragged me back into the courtroom. Thus, it was just “me, God, and Google” against seasoned attorneys who seemed to know every angle of the legal system. After winning my Rule 10 Extraordinary Appeal in the Court of Appeals, successfully representing myself in a post-divorce trial in NJ, and completing my 23-year “career” as a homeschooling mother, I began to consider the next chapter of my life. Although I considered becoming a paralegal at that point, I shunned the idea at first. I was not interested in assisting any attorney, especially after what I had experienced. However, I knew if I could assist the right

attorney, I could help others. When a golden opportunity opened for me to attend the Paralegal Program at Pellissippi Community College, I took a leap of faith and jumped in. After graduating, I sought an attorney who was as passionate about helping others as I was. When I interviewed with Mital and Julie, I sensed their passion for helping others, and I was determined to help them as much as I could.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL OTHERS WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT REPRESENTING THEMSELVES IN COURT? Please, don’t do it!
