LIFESTYLE LETTER
Wishing You the Happiest of Holidays We’re carrying over our gratitude from November and taking a moment to be thankful for another successful year for West Knoxville Lifestyle. We’ve interviewed dozens of incredible community members, partnered with dozens more, and shared important stories with our readers. The feedback we’ve received encourages us to continue finding new stories to tell and new relationships to build. Your support and your readership are the greatest gifts you could give us. This month, we talked to Jessica King and Aaron Thompson, the “divide and conquer” couple who owns Osteria Stella and Brother Wolf in Knoxville’s Old City. Prior to creating an authentic Italian restaurant and aperitivo bar, they made their marks at Sapphire and The Peter Kern Library. If you’re looking to try a new place this holiday season, then make a reservation to carve out a few hours to enjoy and linger, just as if you were in Rome. We also reached out to a handful of inspiring business leaders and talked to them about the importance of giving. Each of these folks – Melissa Ballard, Robin Easter, Jim Caughorn, and Tim Willis – prioritize others in the community, always looking for ways to help or give of their time and resources. We hope you’ll be inspired by them. Since we’re in gift-giving season, we’ve pulled together a collection of locally made and locally sold items if you’re needing some fresh ideas. Chelsea Bauer of Union Ave Books has some recommendations for your favorite bookworm. As always, we’re grateful for our regular contributions from PYA Waltman and TriAmicus, along with the Knoxville History Project. If you’re already planning to enjoy the holiday lights downtown, then you’ll have to swing by the four statues KHP spotlights this month. We have some outstanding interviews planned for 2023, so keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime, we wish you all a warm and cozy holiday season. Please be in touch if you have a story idea or would like to partner with us in a future issue. M A R C & A M Y, P U B L I S H E R S @WESTKNOX VILLELIFEST YLE

Local, Family-Owned Salons for Over 40 years
This is NOT an ad – I know I’m supposed to write a compelling ad about what makes Ross The Boss so awesome, but something happened the other day, and I thought you would be better served (and much prefer) to hear about that. So, the other day, I had this really great server, but she forgot to refill my coffee. (If you know me, then refilling my creamer would be more accurate). Anyway, as we were leaving, she came over and realized she forgot, and started to intensely trash-talk herself. “I suck. I’m such a loser. You don’t even have to tip me!” Her reaction shook me, as I immediately sensed that these were not really “her” words, but words that had been spoken to her by others. I imagined that this was the result of years of negativity from someone close to her, and when I saw her believing them (and agreeing that she “sucked” because she forgot to refill someone’s coffee) it broke me. I wanted to grab her by the shoulders, look her in the eyes and tell her that what she had been told was LIES! I own a company and I forget little stuff more than I care to admit. My wife has been the number one agent at Coldwell Banker Wallace for the last few years and is a “systems girl” and she forgets stuff (which normally results in me having to fill in some gaps), and although it frustrates me- I would never think she was a loser!
“So, I share that story to say this: I love responsible people and I like flawless execution, but if you don’t hit 100%, it doesn’t mean you suck.
This poor server is believing lies that, in all likelihood, were told to her by someone who has also been fed lies, and it occurred to me that she’s not the only one in this tragic cycle.
“We aren’t perfect – but we are trying to achieve our purpose.”
Our purpose at Ross The Boss is to create an environment where people can experience professional excellence and genuine love.” We don’t always achieve that. I can still name the three clients that I messed up years ago, and that still bothers me. So, I just wanted to write this to let you know that none of us are perfect, and some of you need to give yourself a break. (This was not written for the people who always give themselves a break-different altogether).
If you can closely relate to the above story then 1) cut yourself a break, and 2) get away from your naysayers…and when you need some support, then come get your hair done. We will do our best to wash away those lies with some truth and some great shampoo! As for my server, she will be getting a hand delivered copy of this “ad” the next time I’m in along with some truthful encouragement! So, be nice to your servers (and hairdresser) and go encourage somebody today!
Thanks! - Ross the Boss

FOUR PROFESSIONALS WHO PRIORITIZE OTHERS

On the Importance of Giving
Tim Willis, General Manager of Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux
To spotlight this season of giving, we talked to local community leaders about their priorities when it comes to philanthropy. We hope you’ll be inspired by their stories.
WAS PHILANTHROPY MODELED FOR YOU WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? Tim: When I was younger, my grandmother lived and worked in a home that housed mentally disabled adults and cared for them day and night, even on holidays. When we wanted to see her,

we had to do so at the group home. This showed me from a young age that if you were healthy and able, you should share that blessing helping others who are not as fortunate.
WAS THERE SOMETHING (AN EVENT OR EXPERIENCE) THAT MARKED A SHIFT IN YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON GIVING?
Robin Easter Reeves, Principal and Creative Director at Robin Easter Design
Robin: For years I put in lots of hours and worked really hard in my graphic design business. I was living on a pretty tight budget, but I was determined to make it. I had the opportunity to do some work for a few nonprofits that were doing great things to benefit our community. I didn’t have a lot of money to donate, but I could donate time and design work, and I noticed the difference strong branding and graphic design could make in helping them raise awareness and money to further a good cause. I also noticed that as I gave to others my business began to thrive. Melissa: When I was a teenager, I saved money from part-time jobs for a trip to Israel with a friend’s church. Following the September 11th attacks, I felt moved to give the money I’d saved to charity to help support the families of those who had perished in the attacks. While not a large sum of money in perspective, it was my first sacrificial gift. It was then that I learned the joy felt in giving cannot be replicated and is worth much more than the value of the dollars themselves. Tim: As I became older, I noticed no matter how good things were going for myself I still did not feel truly happy. It was when I started to help others, life started to have more meaning and true happiness. CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2

WHAT LIFE LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED THROUGH YOUR EXPERIENCES SERVING ON BOARDS, DONATING MONEY OR RESOURCES, BEING A PART OF A NONPROFIT, ETC.? Robin: I’ve learned that you “reap what you sow.” I noticed that as I donated time and resources my business became more successful. You don’t have to donate a lot of money to make a difference. Serving on boards and committees, I’ve learned so much and I’ve met people that I wouldn’t have otherwise … The more I give of my time and resources, the more I enjoy my experience of being involved and the more impact I am able to have on things I care about. Melissa: Both volunteering for and serving on the board of Knoxville’s Harmony Family Center have taught me the great impact that even a small amount of time or financial resources can have on a local organization. While large, national nonprofits are certainly still deserving of our support, there are so many local charities for whom even a few hours or dollars a month can move the needle in a large way. Pouring into the nonprofits in our local community can have an exponentially larger impact than a gift of similar size to a large organization. Jim: I’ve served on the Boys and Girls Club board for ten years. Walk into a Boys and Girls Club after school and see the commitment, passion, and education that people are providing to kids in our community… Sometimes this is the only hot meal they get. You can walk through and see people helping kids with homework, teaching them to be better stewards of their time.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF GENEROSITY IN A WAY THAT INSPIRED YOU? Melissa: It took my husband and I many years to start our family. It was an emotionally and financially draining season of our lives. One physician walked through each year of the difficulty with us. In one particularly painful year, I received a call from his office with the message that he’d said ‘enough’ to their billing department. He ‘zeroed out’ our balance owed and did not charge us for the remainder of the year’s care he provided. I will never forget the feeling that gave me. It brings tears to my eyes to this day. It wasn’t just about the money to me and my husband. It was about our physician’s kindness. When he said ‘enough,’ he was not just acknowledging the financial weight we were bearing, but the emotional weight as well. What a gift to have a quantifiable reminder that we were not on the journey alone. I’ll be forever grateful for his generosity and kindness. Generosity moves people.

WHAT IMPACT HAVE YOU SEEN ON THE COMMUNITY, EITHER FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES WITH GIVING OR FROM A COLLECTIVE EFFORT? Jim: When you’re a company like ours, one of our big pushes is to buy local, buy from small businesses. It takes the community you’re in to make that come true. When I look at that, the community is giving to us. It allows me to provide 29 jobs. The give-back for me is simple. It’s an obligation. The company supports me and my family, and my employees, and the community grows. Youth is our future, so we have to invest in them. Robin: I’ve seen a very tangible impact on the Old City, where my office has been located for 33 years. For a while it was like a forgotten ghost town, but with branding and promotion, a collective voice and the creation of events and activities, it is vibrant and growing. We have such a great community of residents and businesses. The work I put in, along with many others who volunteer on our board and committees,
have created events like the Old City Market and Dolly Fest which has helped the small businesses thrive … I’m now very focused on The University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design. I think it is important to give back to the University that helped me achieve a career that I have loved so much.
WHY IS GIVING BACK IMPORTANT TO YOU? Jim: I think the most important thing is that when you’re giving, if you’re giving because you believe in what you’re doing and not because you’re looking for a pat on the back or being recognized, the gift will come back tenfold. What you do today, you may not reap the benefits for five to ten years. You don’t need to know. Your heart is in the right place and trust the rest of it. Tim: I have noticed that giving and volunteering, whether it is time or resources, is the true backbone of any great community. Knoxville is a great example of this, so I just want to do my part to be a true member of this great community. D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2

a look at knoxville’s downtown statues DOWNTOWN STATUES PART I This month we look at some of Knoxville’s remarkable statues, many of which can be seen on a stroll around downtown. The city’s first statues first appeared not on street corners or in public parks, but in cemeteries. During the Victorian era of the late 1800s, most statues in graveyards depicted women, often angels, to memorialize women and girls who had died young. Later, an 1893 memorial statue in Bethel Cemetery memorialized the graves, mostly unmarked, of Confederate soldiers. The Union monument in National Cemetery rose in 1906, replacing an earlier bronze statue destroyed by lightning. The first downtown statue (covered in an earlier issue of West Knoxville Lifestyle), the firefighters memorial, was erected on the lawn of the Knox County Courthouse in 1905 and now stands in front of the downtown fire station on Summit Hill Drive. Learn more about other local statues, buildings, cemeteries, neighborhoods, and parks in Historic Knoxville: The Curious Visitor’s Guide, a 200-page full color guide to the city’s historical places, available in local bookshops and gift stores and online at KnoxvilleHistoryProject.org

The first-ever commission by Oklahoma artist David Phelps, the “The Rowboat Man” startled pedestrians when it was installed on the northwest corner of Gay Street and Church Avenue in 1988. Although Phelps didn’t name the sculpture at the time of its installation, he casually suggested to a reporter that it could be called “Hope in Adversity,” but he now lists it as “The Oarsman.” The subject of the sculpture is unknown, but many have suggested he might be Cormac McCarthy’s antihero, Suttree, in the author’s 1979 offbeat novel of the same name, who spent a lot of time in a rowboat on the Tennessee River. Beloved Woman of Justice BELOVED WOMAN OF JUSTICE “Beloved Woman of Justice” by Audrey Flack (b. 1931) can be found in the courtyard at the Howard Baker Jr Federal Courthouse (the former Whittle Communications’ building) between Main Avenue and Cumberland Avenue. The arresting bust actually reflects a Cherokee tradition where an honored woman is entrusted with special judicial powers. Both the artist and Senator Baker attended the statue’s unveiling in 2000.
VIETNAM MEMORIAL An unusual statue puzzles passersby on the front lawn at the City County Building on Main Street. This semi-abstract Vietnam War memorial, made with three interlocking slabs of marble, is a remarkable tribute created in 1973 by Knoxville architect and artisan Arnold Schwarzbart (19422015). It was one of a very few Vietnam monuments installed in America while the war was still on and is therefore one of the nation’s oldest. The design depicts an eagle with a broken wing and originally stood at the old City Hall on Summit Hill Drive, now the campus of LMU’s Duncan School of Law. In his later years Schwarzbart designed several local structures, notably the Knoxville Zoo’s main building.
Rachmaninoff SERGEI RACHMANINOFF Downtown’s most surprising statue may be that of famous Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (18731943). The 12-foot-high creation by Russian sculptor Viktor Bokarev was bronzed locally and installed here in 2003 in the southwest corner of World’s Fair Park. The statue commemorates the composer’s performance at UT’s Alumni Memorial Auditorium in February 1943. Rachmaninoff died just several weeks after his Knoxville stay, the final performance of his career.

A PRICELESS GIFT IDEA FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | LOCAL S E RVI CE S
As a kid, we all remember staying up late, waking up early, or not sleeping at all in anticipation of running downstairs to open presents on Christmas morning. My parents had a rule growing up that we couldn’t wake them up until 7:00 AM on Christmas morning. While the intent of this rule was for us to get some sleep, it actually caused my brothers and I to “camp out” in one of our bedrooms in anticipation of waking our parents up. The annual “camp out” tradition started with all three of us congregating in my bedroom thirty minutes before 7:00 AM. The following year we were all together an hour before we could wake our parents up. Before you know it, we all three were sleeping in the same bed for the whole night. The memories that I have with my brothers laying in bed late on Christmas Eve hypothesizing what we would get the next day or reading books on the floor at 4:00 AM to kill time are priceless to me. As a child, I spent all night every Christmas Eve wondering what I would get the next day. The funny thing is, I could probably only name one or two gifts I received from my parents all those years.
Instead, what I can remember is almost every single second I spent with my brothers in anticipation of that morning. Looking back, it is easy to see that the gift wasn’t what was coming the next morning, it was the time I got to spend with my brothers the night before. We are so quick to latch onto phrases during this time of year like “it is better to give than to receive” that we lose sight of the fact that the holiday season isn’t even about giving. It is about shared time together! Every single memory that I have from the holiday season as a child centers around traditions and time together, not gifts that I received. Time is the most finite resource we have on this earth, which is often why it is the last thing that we think to give to others. In reality, it is the most precious gift you can give someone. We are all guilty of getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of this season, but this year be intentional about sharing your time. Start a new holiday tradition as a family. Give your spouse a weekend away instead of new clothes. Bake together as a family. Give your kids a family trip instead of a new PlayStation. Drive around as a family and look at Christmas lights. The beautiful thing is, it doesn’t matter what you decide to do, who it is with, or how much money you spend on it - what matters is that it is with the people you love. Once you realize that experiences and memories last exponentially longer in your heart than a physical gift, there is no turning back, I promise. WHEN IN ROME VISIT ITALY FOR A NIGHT AT OSTERIA STELLA + BROTHER WOLF
ARTICLE BY JENNIE TREADWAY-MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN POYNTER

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE
In 2015, Jessica King spent two weeks in Rome on her own with one primary goal: to play the role of a regular. “I wanted to immerse myself in one location and get to know what it felt like to exist in that space. I was not thinking it was because I was going to open an Italian bar. I just really wanted to understand the culture, and I was able to do that in a little subsect of Rome on a hill that overlooks the city,” she says. She’d sit night after night at the same cafe, which opened at 6:30 in the morning for juice and espresso, and then transitioned to lunch with sandwiches, and then dinner, and then the late-night menu would start. It was a near-24-hour business that served the whole community. “I watched young people show up on their scooters and in small cars and fully embrace each other with hugs and kisses. They’d drink cocktails slowly and no one had cell phones out, and they enjoyed each other’s company,” says Jessica. “At some point, they’d all get up and hug and kiss each other and head home. They weren’t slobbering drunk. It was the genuine interest of wanting to be together.” Jessica pauses, then says, “I think we are so missing out on this experience.” The desire to cultivate an enjoyable hospitality experience is not new for Jessica. The Knoxville native, whose family has called 4th and Gill home for more than a century, graduated high school and went to work as a cocktail waitress at the now-shuttered Blue Cats club downtown. The excitement of her new job waned as some patrons pushed boundaries. It wasn’t long before she knew her best role was going to be from behind the bar, and soon, another door opened that would be a game changer. “I loved having that physical barrier between me and the dudes trying to grab me. That was it for me. I
worked at various bars from that point on, from jazz bars and the original Nama to catering and everything,” she says. “Then, in 2009, the owners of the Oliver Hotel were looking for someone to put a speakeasy in the hotel. They got a reference for me and reached out.” The Peter Kern Library was a smashing success, with its literary-inspired menu tucked inside old encyclopedias amid a cozy academic setting and a drink menu Jessica designed herself. “It did exceptionally well. That bar made more money than the hotel,” she says. “I used to have teachers come in around 5 p.m. and take up a booth and drink martinis or a bottle of wine and grade papers. Then later on, our rule was the later it gets, the darker it gets, the louder the music gets, and the more people we cram in. There was electric energy.” While Jessica was building her career in hospitality, so was her future partner, Aaron Thompson. Sapphire opened on Gay Street in 2005, and Aaron was one of the first bartenders on staff. Whatever job existed at Sapphire, Aaron did it. By 2008, the owner wanted to sell the bar and Aaron, who’d moved up as general manager, wanted to buy it. He and Jessica were in a new relationship at the time, and now they had to negotiate how to function as romantic partners in the workplace. For a while they kept the two worlds separate, but by 2013, Jessica and Aaron realized they were a creative duo with big ideas, a true “divide and conquer” couple. After traveling to Italy together in 2018, an idea for something started to stir. “I’d asked Jessica to marry me on the first day of our trip in Ireland,” says Aaron. “We went on to go to Paris, London, Rome … that’s where the idea was hatched. We went again in 2019, to Venice and Florence. Italy has our heart. The way they live, the culture. It feels like home.”

The intimate booths at Osteria Stella are reserved for parties of four to six people.
“It became a no-brainer,” says Jessica. “If we could capture even a small portion of this and bring it home, we’d be doing a service to others. We knew we had to try.” They had to try something because the success they had at Sapphire had come to an end. Their lease expired, the building changed ownership, and the COVID-19 pandemic was underway. It was late-2020, and the couple was looking at a total loss of income as new parents. Their daughter, Stella, had been born that July. “We were promised that Sapphire would come back, and when it didn’t, it was like losing a loved one,” says Aaron. “We feel like that space was our legacy. Sapphire never got the credit for leading cocktail culture here.” With Sapphire gone, the push for a new concept was crucial. They had the skills and passion to open an aperitivo bar. All they needed was a space. “When we were searching for locations, we wanted to put it in Market Square, but Thomas Boyd approached us to say he was closing Rebel Kitchen and Old City Wine Bar and wanted us to visit the space. It was a high compliment. It felt like serendipity,” says Jessica. “The problem is that we wanted to do a cocktail bar, and that space was very clearly a bar and restaurant. Aaron and I weren’t restaurant people, and we didn’t pretend to be restaurant people. So, the challenge was figuring out how to make a restaurant to the level we wanted it to be. We wanted to create a dining experience that was equal to the bar experience.” The bar concept for Brother Wolf – named after Romulus and Remus, the mythical twin brothers who were raised by wolves and founded Rome – was built around the idea that patrons could come and sit down for a long while, that visiting with friends is just as important (if not more so) than the things ordered from the menu. The bar’s neighboring restaurant, Osteria Stella, was born out of the same idea. CONTINUED >

So, they pooled resources and got to work. They hired Shawn Moriarty of FleishmanHillard to create a branding strategy. They hired local artists Emily Key and Jessica Ramsey to paint custom pieces – a trio of canvases in the restaurant and a mural in the bar, respectively. They shopped at estate sales and bought artwork home from Italy to hang on the wall that separates the bar from the restaurant. To build an authentic Italian menu, they hired Amalia Brusati di Settala, who, at the time, had just moved to Knoxville from Milan and was looking for a new project. Amalia wound up being their “Italian guru.” As the concept took shape, they insisted upon incorporating a fundamental Italian custom: No doggie bags. “That’s something we agreed on right away with Amalia. We don’t do any to-go food. Italians are so proud of what they produce, and it should be eaten when it’s ready,” says Jessica. “Plus, our lasagna takes three days to make. All of our pastas and sauces are made in house. We do our own butchering and make our own sausage. It’s all time intensive. We want the food to be enjoyed the minute it comes off the grill.” The couple got it right – and quickly. Doors opened on July 1, 2021, and soon, Brother Wolf and Osteria Stella

gained national recognition with mentions in Esquire, La Cucina Italiana, and Town & Country. Reservations aren’t just recommended. They’re nearly essential. An evening at 108 W. Jackson Ave., if done properly, begins with an aperitivo – the before-dinner drink designed to whet your appetite – at Brother Wolf. Then, slip between the heavyweight drapes and mosey over to Osteria Stella for a multi-course dinner, complete with an antipasti and dolci. Finally, at the close of the meal, return to Brother Wolf for a digestivo, the after-dinner drink designed to settle your stomach. Beyond enjoying the food and drink, Jessica and Aaron hope their guests forget about their cell phones and lose track of time. They want you to spend the evening with your favorite people (parties between four and six get dibs on the cozy, intimate booths at Osteria Stella). Don’t watch the clock. There’s no rush. After all, that’s what you’d do when in Rome. Learn more at OsteriaStella.com Editor’s Note: Aaron and Jessica will be returning to 428 S. Gay St. in 2023 when they open Lilou, an authentic French restaurant where Sapphire used to be.

Smiles for Hope
An Interview with Dr. Smita Borole ARTICLE BY MITAL PATEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB WELTON
38
L EGA L C OM PASS | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S
“If you have the passion for the cause, then all that is left to do is to start ... Once you share your mission you will begin to form the right team, and that will in turn open the right doors to create a nonprofit that reaches and impacts the most people.”
Smiles for Hope, Inc. was created in 2017 when Dr. Borole and her team began providing free dental care to those who otherwise would not have access. What followed was the most rewarding experience: countless smiles that replaced evidence of years of trauma and pain for their patients. The gift of a smile provided these patients with a second chance at life and impacted them both personally and professionally.
MITAL: DR. BOROLE, MANY READERS KNOW YOU FROM YOUR BUSY DENTAL PRACTICE IN TURKEY CREEK. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NONPROFIT, SMILES FOR HOPE, INC. AND THE DECISION BEHIND EXTENDING YOUR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES TO OUR COMMUNITY PRO BONO? Dr. Borole: Unlike state or federal funded healthcare, dental care is not as accessible to many vulnerable members of our community. I was involved in pro bono dental services through various organizations over the years when Judge Deborah Stevens, who was serving as President of YWCA, reached out to fill a need in our community and a need within the organization she was serving. That reignited my passion to fill a need for a dedicated nonprofit aimed at providing holistic dental services for the most severe dental cases amidst the vulnerable population.
AS A PROFESSIONAL WHO IS LICENSED WITH A STATE BOARD WITH STRICT ETHICAL OBLIGATIONS TO ALL PATIENTS, WHAT WERE SOME LEGAL CHALLENGES TO CREATING A SUCCESSFUL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION? Getting the nonprofit organized with the state, preparing all the legal documents to keep it compliant and obtaining the 501(c)3 status was
imperative, but it was uncharted territory. My other legal challenge was ensuring the services provided through the nonprofit would be covered under malpractice insurance and the same protections were offered to all our volunteers. Not all nonprofits have the benefit of a law firm and a great resource for them would be UT Law’s Clinic for Nonprofits.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED OFFERING THEIR SERVICES OR SHARING THEIR KNOWLEDGE THROUGH A NONPROFIT? If you have the passion for the cause, then all that is left to do is to start. Thus, the most important advice is just starting the process as soon as possible. Once you share your mission you will begin to form the right team, and that will in turn open the right doors to create a nonprofit that reaches and impacts the most people.
WHAT CAN SOMEONE DO TO HELP FURTHER THE MISSION OF SMILES FOR HOPE, INC.? Talk to your dental providers and ask them to get involved. The more professionals volunteering their time and skills, the more people we can help. Smiles for Hope can be duplicated in other cities or states. We have already done the legal work. Let us guide others to duplicate these clinics and reach more people. Learn more at SmilesForHopeTN.com

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
