GIRL BOSS OFFICES ANNOUNCES MAJOR RE-BRAND AND EXPANSION The company formerly known as Girl Boss Offices unveiled their rebrand on Monday, May 17 - now named Aught. Owner Erika Biddix explains: “Since opening in 2019, we’ve seen what the power of community can create, over and above our initial decision to provide co-working space. As we’ve increased our brand offerings for female entrepreneurs, we knew we needed to rename the company to encompass everything we offer, or have on the horizon, including retreats and a podcast. Websters has several definitions for the word aught. But two caught our eye. “Anything” and “At All”. As we read them, these two definitions merged and became one. We are on a mission to empower women to build anything at all. We believe women can do anything at all. We believe entrepreneurship can be for anyone at all. We believe anything at all can be accomplished through entrepreneurship." Additionally, Aught Entrepreneur Community expanded to a second location. The Langley Building (520 West Summit Hill Drive, Suite 601) will be available for up to 20 members beginning October 1, 2021. Applications for desks are currently open.

WHEN YOU GET A LOOK AT JON TERRY, YOU MIGHT PEG HIM AS A GUY WHO’S ALWAYS BEEN RUNNING AROUND IN THE WOODS - LIKE HE WAS BORN INTO A CAMPING FAMILY AND STARTED PADDLING BEFORE HE COULD READ. nected with the wilderness, specifically the water.”

RACHEL WILHELM AND KATIE LEVERENZ

It was love at first sight for him - the thrill of being fully immersed in an activity, the tactile connection, the careful, crucial balance of safety and delight. It was the sort of experience that showed him his life’s path. Jon went back to school and joined the Rec Management Department at Appalachian State. He’s been in the outdoor industry ever since.

14

West Knoxville Lifestyle | July 2021

When he and his family moved to East Tennessee nearly three years ago, he landed a job at Blackberry Farm as an outdoor guide. Soon after, he was looking for a place in town to call his own, somewhere he could build a small business rooted in outdoor adventure. “When I first moved here, I reached out to different people in town trying to find a good fit. There was a great building downtown that was underutilized, so I reached out to Billy Lush on Volunteer Landing and asked if he’d consider selling it to me. He said yes,” says Jon. “My father owned a small business, so it’s in my blood and always appealed to me. The circumstances came around and I bought it in early 2020.” Of course, the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic prompted delays, so Jon didn’t open Knoxville Adventure Collective in April 2020 as planned. Instead, he opened in mid-May and immediately set about staggering private slots for paddlers, making sure safety rules applied CONTINUED >

for both on land and in the water. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing since the slower pace of opening allowed for trouble-shooting and learning curves. With a year under his belt, Jon is ready for an influx of adventurers who want to experience the best of Knoxville’s outdoor opportunities. “We’re trying to be an advocate for all outdoor adventures and not get pigeonholed for downtown paddling,” says Jon. “I think a lot of people are craving activity and togetherness. With the impact felt by Covid and the cultural shift to explore new outlets for self-care, the outdoor scene is a huge asset to the community. Knoxville Adventure hopes to continue to promote creative ways to get people of all skill levels outside and enjoying fellowship or self-reflection.” The options are plentiful, from group paddles and bike rides to downtown river floats and Saturday morning yoga sessions. Knoxville Adventure Collective can cater to one person’s desire to paddle around on the Tennessee River to 16

the corporate group who wants a team-building bike experience on the Greenway. Patrons can schedule a sunset or full-moon paddle, a guided fishing trip, or kayak session with an instructor. When it’s all said and done, they can enjoy a pint in the bar, which boasts local craft beers. Knoxville Adventure Collective makes space for both beginners and regulars, those looking for solace as well as those looking for a good time with friends. Jon credits the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club, Legacy Parks, and other local organizations for laying the groundwork for Knoxville’s growing outdoor community. He’s happy to come alongside them and offer another space for those looking to go outside and play. Learn more at KnoxvilleAdventure.com.

The bar at Wild Laurel might be the longest bar in Blount County, with plenty of craft beer, spirits, wine, and cocktails to choose from, and the summer menu is exactly what you want it to be: burgers, fries, chicken salad and pimento cheese sandwiches. Golf or not, anyone can pop into the club for a bite, a pint, and a gorgeous view. The social membership, which is $375 per year per household, includes full access to the private swimming pool and fitness center. Since the golf course is public, the daily rate still applies to those who become members. The pool officially opened Memorial Day weekend and will remain open through Labor Day, or longer if the weather keeps. Wild Laurel is also an ideal place to hold weddings, receptions, board retreats, and other events that warrant mountain views and plenty of space. “We brought in a new vision. We named it Wild Laurel because we want to protect the environment that surrounds us,” says Beau. “Everything we’ve done is with the environment in mind - what we’ve planted, how we fertilize and water - it’s all consistent with that goal.” Learn more at WildLaurel.us

In the wake of the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb, Egyptian themes coupled with the prevailing art-deco designs were surprisingly prevalent in 1920s architecture. Although the development was a financial flop, many of the Talahi’s unique features still remain today: the Talahi Monument seen in the postcard still stands along with an obelisk with “Panther Fountain,” and a recently renovated frog pond, all clustered around the intersection of Cherokee Boulevard Park at Talahi Drive. ANDREW JOHNSON HOTEL

This postcard depicting a view overlooking the Tennessee River highlights several Knoxville icons. Completed in 1929 as the Tennessee Terrace,

and soon renamed the Andrew Johnson Hotel, the enduring Gay Street building remained East Tennessee’s tallest structure for a half a century. The hotel served as a jump-off point for visitors eager to explore the nation’s newest national park in the Smokies. The 1886 Knox County Courthouse shown here is the fourth iteration in the city’s history. The Gay Street Bridge, completed in 1897, ushered in a new era of streetcars, helping to connect new suburbs such as Island Home Park in South Knoxville. Shared by Alec Riedl.

Southern Summer Blooms TIPS FOR GROWING HEALTHY, HAPPY HYDRANGEAS

HYDRANGEAS ARE A SOUTHERN DELIGHT. Here are a few tips I have picked up through the years for growing these beautiful flowering shrubs. KNOWING OUR PLANTING ZONE One of the best starting places for successful hydrangeas is knowing our growing zone and the first and last frost dates. According to the USDA, we are in zone 7a with 213 growing days from mid-April until the first frost in late October. The best time of year for planting hydrangeas is in the spring after the last frost or in the fall before the first frost. WHERE TO PLANT? Most Hydrangeas grow best in partial sun. They like full sun in the morning and some afternoon shade to protect them from the midday sun. WHEN TO PRUNE? For pruning hydrangeas, the general rule of thumb is if it flowers before June, prune right after flowering. These flowering shrubs flower on old growth made the previous year. The time to prune flowering hydrangeas is immediately after the flowering is finished, to give the plant time to develop new growth before winter arrives.
