Celebrating 25Years Susan Worthington and her mother, Frances Sexton, founded The Southern Market more than two decades ago with the vision of creating an upscale interiors market that showcased local vendors featuring strictly stylish merchandise. With more than 200 current vendors, Worthington added that The Southern Market offers a variety of products that range from home decor, gifts, boutique fashions, and art. We are always looking to enhance our market with exceptional new merchants and artists. “We pioneered a new breed of marketplace in an era of antique and craft only malls” said Worthington. “Neither Knoxville - nor any Southern city we visited for that matter - had anything like us at the time.” We traveled more than 20,000 miles throughout the Southeast hand selecting our first merchants over several years. We built our building entirely for this concept as well. Having built this Knoxville staple and entrepreneurial legacy literally from the ground up and on the pages of Veranda magazine before they ever opened, these ladies were destined for success. Decades later, The Southern Market, located at 5400 Homberg Drive, is still going strong winning Best Gift Shop and Best Interior Design by Knoxvillians year after year, and will be celebrating its 25th year in business this November, an event that will coincide with its annual Holiday Open House, Nov. 4-7, 2021. Worthington says the market’s lengthy success is a result of its focus on recruiting quality, small businesses from the local community, servicing those businesses’ needs, and garnering mutually successfully relationships that last for many years. We aim to minimize turnover and maximize our merchants’ successes. “Southern Market has been promoting ‘shop local’ for 25 years,” she said. “Shop Local is not new to us. We have loved and embraced shopping local and small businesses since 1996. We are small business. We are shopping. We are local. Come shop local at Southern Market.”

Southern Market before, now is the time. Tucked away in the heart of Bearden, their 8500-square-foot building is home to dozens (upon dozens) of merchants selling housewares, home decor, jewelry, clothing, and more. One of the things that stood out to us in her interview was when Susan said, “Customers vote with their dollars,” which speaks not only to the longevity of love West Knoxville has for Southern Market but also to the quality of items merchants have to offer. If you’re getting in the holiday shopping spirit, then add Southern Market Shops to your list of places to peruse. If you’re in the market to buy or sell a luxury home in the area, then look no further than the Threlkelds for your real estate team. This month we talked to Robert about what it takes to buy and sell luxury homes in Knoxville, as well as what sets them apart from the rest. They never stop working for their clients, which is why their Keller Williams Signature team is currently ranked No. 1 in the luxury market.

a q&a with john coykendall CELEBRATING THE CUSHAW AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SEED-SAVING
JOHN COYKENDALL IS A TENNESSEE TREASURE. A native of Knoxville, John is an artist, seed saver, and farmer. For more than four decades, John has discovered, cultivated, and preserved varieties of heirloom seed and is passionate about saving seeds and stories. In his book, Preserving Our Roots: My Journey to Save Seeds and Stories, co-written with Christian Melton, John highlights staple crops, agricultural practices, and favorite recipes from the families and friends who have hosted him. Accompanied by a rich selection of drawings, journal pages, and photographs―along with more than forty recipes―Preserving Our Roots chronicles Coykendall’s passion for recording foods and narratives that capture the rhythms of daily life on farms, in kitchens, and across generations. JOHN, WHY DO YOU SAVE HEIRLOOM SEED? Well, it’s so important. We went through a long period of time where we forgot about the old seeds and the old varieties. Modern agriculture came in, and your small farms began to disappear. People were leaving the farms, moving to cities, so a lot of those things fell by the wayside. When the old ones started to die out, there wasn’t anyone left to carry that on. Luckily, however, there was a number that did, especially in your Appalachian region. The Appalachian region is more diverse as far as seed saving, seeds available than anywhere in the country, by far. So old varieties have been preserved and handed down to us.

AME CHURCH COOK BOOK This circa 1919 Cook Book by the Sewing Circle of the African-American Logan Temple AME Zion Church offers a rare taste of Knoxville cuisine from a century ago. Logan Temple was then downtown on Commerce Street, almost adjacent to the Central Street “Bowery.” The Gleaner Printing Co., which published it, was a Black-owned business just around the corner on Vine Street. The Logan Temple congregation still thrives on Selma Avenue in East Knoxville. Early Knoxville-based cookbooks are rare finds, but part of our cultural history. (Shared by Sherry Wallace Barry)
NATIONAL CONSERVATION EXPOSITION This photograph offers a rare vantage, through the pines, of the old main exhibition hall at Chilhowee Park, a centerpiece at three national expositions, notably the National Conservation Exposition (“N.C.E.”) of 1913, when it welcomed visitors like William Jennings Bryan, Helen Keller, and Booker T. Washington. Later it was central to the first Tennessee Valley Fairs, and by the 1930s, it was notable for major jazz concerts. The building burned down in a spectacular fire in 1938 and replaced by the current Jacob Building. (Shared by Carol Mayo Jenkins)

that her daughter Callie, now 23, was sitting in her leopard stroller being entertained by customers while Susan pulled products from the shelf. It’s just one of the many reasons why Susan is sentimental about Southern Market Shops. You can’t create a business with your parents, raise your children in the building, watch dozens of people succeed, and not get sentimental. “We didn’t just take something and renovate it. We were all-in from the get-go,” says Susan. “It’s been fun to watch the community develop around us. It’s always been an art community district with a small entrepreneurial vision.” Though there aren’t plans to expand the building, Susan says work is underway expanding their online presence to a full, multi-merchant marketplace. She and her team are passionate about the collective success of their merchants, so expanding online services is the best next step. “A rising tide floats all boats, so people work together here. Everyone wants everyone to do well,” says Susan. “That’s our ultimate goal.”

KNOW LUXURY ENJOY SUCCESS WITH KELLER WILLIAMS SIGNATURE REAL ESTATE CHOOSING TO BUILD A LIFE IN KNOXVILLE WASN’T A HARD DECISION FOR ROBERT AND HAILEY THRELKELD, AS THEIR EAST TENNESSEE FAMILY ROOTS RUN THREE GENERATIONS DEEP. Going into real estate was also an easy call because when you love where you live, you want others to love it too. For the past decade, the Threlkelds have helped Knoxvillians buy and sell many homes, and for the last four years in particular, they’ve made a name for themselves as West Knoxville experts who understand the luxury market. “Luxury sales require a different skill set to be able to deliver the results necessary to achieve our clients’ goals,” says Robert. “The network we have established with our buyers and sellers, in addition to the relationships with other agents who have clients in the luxury space, helps to get homes sold.” The luxury home market is tight on supply, but their Keller Williams Signature firm, currently ranked as No. 1 in the market for Luxury Volume, is primed and ready to do the work buyers and sellers deserve. From Robert, here are a few ways the Threlkelds and their team stand out among the rest.

“We offer additional marketing avenues to create maximum exposure for our listings, things like a Matterport 3D tour, which allows a prospective buyer to virtually walk through the home. This helps to save our sellers time to make sure the showings are qualified and educates the buyer on the floor plan and what to expect when viewing the home. Plus, through our affiliation with Keller Williams Luxury platform, we can offer additional exposure through our national network and access to publications like the Wall Street Journal, Fortune and Forbes magazine.”

service, expertise on the market and negotiations, and access to off-market offerings. Often there are homes that aren’t publicly listed but the homeowners would be willing to sell. We love to connect our buyers with these sellers. We keep our clients’ goals at the forefront of everything that we do.” For more information on buying or selling in the Knoxville Luxury market, or to learn more about the Threlkelds, visit ThrelkeldHomes.com or call (865) 235-8992.
