EVERY YEAR WHEN MAY MAKES ITS WELCOMED RETURN TO OUR CALENDARS, WE CAN’T HELP BUT WANT TO RUN OUTSIDE AND SOAK UP THE SUNSHINE, LISTEN TO THE BIRDS SINGING, SMELL THE CUT GRASS AND WATCH THOSE BEES BUZZING AROUND. This month brings with it an abundance of joy—bright blue skies, a rainbow of flowers and, of course, the celebration of Mother’s Day on May 12. In this issue, we have a celebration of some of the wonderful women in our community. The following pages are filled with stories to inspire us all to appreciate the women in our lives and to strengthen the connection we have with our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. The Women’s Issue serves to recognize the powerful role women have in our community

Faux tree branches are used to hang IV bags rather than the metal towers used in hospitals.

Ketamine infusions are given intravenously over an extended period, anywhere from 40 minutes to four hours, depending on the condition and severity. Unlike an IV push of the anesthetic that is given in a hospital setting, the slow infusion reduces unwanted side effects of ketamine while still allowing clients to feel relaxed during their treatment.
2
Jennifer says ketamine causes a psychological disconnection during infusion, which allows the subconscious to surface. Jeff says this process “breaks down barriers” for clients to process trauma and emotional triggers. Counseling services are offered before, after and even during infusion treatments.

A full series of ketamine treatment consists of five to 10 sessions over the course of five to 14 days, and fully half of the patients never have to return for a booster infusion. Ketamine providers report 70 to 80 percent effectiveness nationally, but Jennifer says Revitalist’s rate is more like 85 percent effective thanks to their comprehensive discharge protocols and holistic approach to healing.

Go-Getters and
FOUR LOCAL WOMEN YOU SHOULD KNOW PHOTOGRAPHY ELENA GANUSOVA
Kate Ziegler OCCUPATION: Business owner and motivational speaker THREE THINGS I DON'T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT: Bible, journal, a phone to talk to my family because they don't live here FAVORITE FILM: The Prestige BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED: Control the controllables. It’s so easy to waste time and energy worrying about things that are out of our control, like things of our past or the future or what other people will think or do. In doing so, we frequently give up power and miss out on an opportunity. WHAT I ENJOY MOST ABOUT MY JOB: It may sound cliché, but I love helping people. I feel so fortunate to join people on their journey to self-discovery and achieving their best. I light up sharing in breakthrough moments with clients or audience members—an athlete who has a best time after years of no improvement and doubt or a businessman who realizes that his title simply distinguishes but does not define him. It’s amazing to see people connect their head and heart for greater wholeness, success and joy. THE HOBBY I MAKE TIME FOR (OR WISH I HAD MORE TIME FOR): I really enjoy running even though I’m terrible at it. Take me out of the water, and I am a complete klutz! Nevertheless, I love it because, when I run, my mind is clear, my thoughts connect, and I feel at ease being in nature. I also feel this way when I draw, which I wish I had more time to do. IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME, I'D TELL MY COLLEGE-AGE SELF: So many things! A big one is you are valued and worthy just as you are. It’s easy to compare yourself to others and try to live up to other’s expectations, but the only person you should compare yourself to is the woman you were yesterday. Each day is an opportunity to learn, grow and be your best. Focus on that, and you will be more successful and satisfied, and you’ll save yourself a lot of worry and frustration. MY FAVORITE PLACE TO GO FOR A QUICK DAY-TRIP: Max Patch is about 1 1/2 hours away and, on a clear day, has great views. It’s perfect for hiking or just a relaxing picnic. 18
West Knoxville Lifestyle | May 2019
Drocella Mugorewera OCCUPATION: Executive Director of Bridge Refugee Services, the only refugee resettlement agency in East Tennessee THREE THINGS I DON'T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT: Eucharist, house and friends FAVORITE FILM: Black Panther FAVORITE BOOK: Who Moved My Cheese? BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED: From my mother: “Be kind and you will meet kindness ahead.” Quote from Jim Rhon: “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” If you want to win, plan, pursue and persevere. Winners never quit, and quitters never win. WHAT I ENJOY MOST ABOUT MY WORK: Advocate for our clients’ needs, seeing our clients succeeding, integrating and be self-sufficient and contributing members in their new country, as well as enormous support and partnerships with welcoming communities. A GOAL I'M CURRENTLY REACHING FOR: Bridge Refugee Services became a vibrant organization in East Tennessee, refugee voices are heard, many people educated about the refugee program, more private funds mobilized and partnerships developed. When I was interviewed for the current position, I promised to search for nontraditional partners and build strong relationships. We made it, and we will keep growing. IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME, I'D TELL MY COLLEGEAGE SELF: Expand your horizons of learning by reading extra books, and do not only focus on those recommended by professors. Your brain is sharp. Double-major if you can, and get involved in the community, and volunteer as much as you can. Take your time when you date someone you plan to live with forever.

Lila Honaker OCCUPATION: Development Director at the Tennessee Theatre THREE THINGS I DON'T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT: My bed, my dog and music FAVORITE FILM: The Wizard of Oz. FAVORITE BAND: This is a very tough question. I’m not sure I have an all-time favorite, so I’ll go with my current favorite, which is Rainbow Kitten Surprise. I’ve been listening to them on heavy rotation for several months now. FAVORITE BOOK: Another very hard one. Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. A modern favorite. BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED: Surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you to grow, who aren’t always like you, and who bring out your best. WHAT I ENJOY MOST ABOUT MY WORK: I most enjoy knowing my work brings joy and enrichment to others, be it the experience of attending an event at the Theatre, discovering a passion through a workshop or class in the arts, or helping to keep this historical treasure and work of art preserved and thriving. A GOAL I'M CURRENTLY REACHING FOR: In my job, I hope to enhance the arts education initiatives we have at the Theatre. Knowing how important, impactful and fun arts education is for children and the fact that arts curriculum in schools is diminishing, I think we have a real opportunity to provide unique, engaging programs that bridge classroom and real-world learning. Personally, I aim to send more handwritten notes to friends and loved ones this year. In a world of digital communication, a handwritten note received in the mail is a treasure. IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME, I'D TELL MY COLLEGEAGE SELF: Always trust yourself. Even if you make a mistake or have regret later, know that it was a learning experience, one you needed in order to move forward and grow.

WHAT I ENJOY MOST ABOUT MY WORK: Learning with and from those I encounter along the way, from the youngest child to the most mature adult. A GOAL I'M CURRENTLY REACHING FOR: Completing my doctorate A HOBBY I MAKE TIME FOR (OR WHICH I HAD TIME FOR): cross-stitch and needlepoint IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME, I'D TELL MY COLLEGEAGE SELF: Live each day with profound intentionality! MUST-SEE PLACES/EXPERIENCES IN KNOXVILLE: Farmers' Market, a walk at Ijams, a festival—there are so many—at World’s Fair Park, dinner at Che Guevara, time in the sanctuary at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

ARTICLE JENNIE TREADWAY-MILLER
IN 2011, WHEN MAYOR MADELINE ROGERO TOOK OFFICE, SHE SOON HEARD FROM LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS ABOUT HOW HARD IT WAS TO KNOW WHO TO CONTACT WITH QUESTIONS, CONCERNS AND PROBLEMS. Thus were the origins of City of Knoxville’s Business Liaison position, and Patricia Robledo landed the spot. “This is a one-stop shop for businesses,” she says. “It’s just me, myself and I, but I’m lucky to call everybody my working group because I work with every department. When someone comes in and has trouble with zoning or permits, I can reach out to different people in the city and ask them to help me help them. I’m the conduit, the bridge.” It’s a role Patricia is familiar with—connecting people, that is. Prior to her position as business liaison, she started her own language translation company, Robledo Translations LLC, which afforded her the opportunity to work with local major employers who needed help bridging the language barrier. “It was primarily translating materials for human resources, policy and procedure manuals in hospitality and restaurant businesses, construction companies and some in the public sector,” Patricia says. “It was interesting when Mayor Rogero reached out to me with this position. I told her I wasn’t necessarily knowledgeable about zoning or construction, but her answer was that we had experts for

that. We needed a liaison to go between the experts and the people.” Patricia emigrated from Colombia in 1981, a move that brought her directly from the Andes to the Smokies. She worked at the World’s Fair in 1982 and attended UTK, then left Tennessee only to return a decade later. Patricia wanted to raise her kids here, and nothing beats a long run in Knoxville. “I love being active, so I run a lot of 5Ks. I wouldn’t consider myself a runner, but I love running 5Ks—combining physical activity and discovering new things and supporting nonprofits. I feed off the energy of others, to be by myself but not alone,” she says. When Patricia isn’t serving Knoxville business or running races, she’s serving on local boards and volunteering. “I did not realize how emotional this job would be. I don’t take it lightly,” she says. “Someone comes into my office and shares with me their dreams and passions. They’re putting things on the line. It’s a family decision. It’s important that people feel I am listening and understanding. It’s a gift.”
“This is a one-stop s h o p fo r b u s i n e s s e s .”
P a t r i c i a ’s F i ve Pieces of Advice:
1.
Vo l u n t e e r ! Knoxville has a rich nonprofit community. No doubt there are organizations right here in our community that address issues you are passionate about. You can make a difference with your talents, and you may be surprised by how much networking helps connect you to unexpected opportunities.
2.
B e b r a ve ! Opportunities will present themselves that you might find intimidating, but they have come to you for a reason. Embrace them! Most everyone has experienced “impostor syndrome,” the feeling that you might not belong in your current situation, despite the hard work that has resulted in your success. Imposter syndrome is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a reflection of your personal growth as you step outside of your comfort zone.
3.
Stretch! Be OK with a little discomfort. Make an effort to attend cultural events, and meet people with whom you would not regularly interact. Knowing people of a different race, religion, socioeconomic status, physical ability or other differences not only enriches you but also makes the world a safer and better place as it breaks down fears and stereotypes.
4. 5.
Seek mentors! There will be people in your life who will see a potential in you before you see it yourself. Believe them. Allow them to mentor you.
Pay attention! Be relevant by keeping up with the pulse of the community. Be observant and informed. Pay attention to local politics because they have a real effect on our daily lives. It is more common to pay more attention to national politics; however, our local representatives shape decisions on issues that have the greatest everyday impact.

FRESH BERRIES AND CREAMY CHOCOLATE GOODNESS ON A PLATE
chocolate strawberry cream cheese pie I ABSOLUTELY LOVE FRESH STRAW-
INGREDIENTS
BERRIES WHEN THEY ARE IN SEASON AND MY FAVORITE WAY TO ENJOY THEM IS WHEN THEY ARE COVERED IN CHOCOLATE! My mom was always a great cook, as is my sister. But I never did well following recipes because I loved improvising. A few years back, I was about to make a cheesecake and some chocolate-covered strawberries for a neighborhood barbecue. True to form, I went off the grid and came up with this beautiful pie! I have entered this recipe in contests three different times and won every time. If you would like to impress your family and friends, give this a try. Beautiful, delicious and EASY, I promise!
+ 1 1/3 C crushed graham cracker crumbs (substitute Oreo crumbs, if you really like chocolate) + 3 T granulated sugar + 2/3 C melted butter + 12 oz. softened cream cheese + 1 1/4 C semisweet chocolate chips (save 1/4 C for top) + 1/4 C packed brown sugar + 1 T vanilla + 12 oz. frozen whipped topping, thawed in refrigerator (very important!) + 1/2 in. square of paraffin + 1 QT fresh strawberries, sliced lengthwise about 1/8” thick
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325 degrees CRUST Combine cookie crumbs, sugar and butter well. Spray 9” pie pan lightly with cooking spray or lightly grease. Press crumbs into bottom and up sides of pan, distributing evenly. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool. FILLING Melt one cup of chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave. Be careful the chocolate does not burn. Beat cream cheese until light and fluffy with electric mixer. Add brown sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Add cooled chocolate. Mix well. Fold in the whipped topping. Spoon the filling into the cooled crust evenly, smoothing out the top. Cover with foil and chill at least four hours. TOPPING Don’t top until just a couple hours before serving as berries can get soft. Start at the outer edge of the pie and make a row of strawberries overlapping the edge of the pie pan a bit. Continue laying out strawberries in circular, overlapping rows. Save one whole berry for the very center of the pie. Heat paraffin and remain 1/4 C chocolate (add paraffin if chocolate is too thick to drizzle). Drizzle chocolate from a small spoon over berries.

They offer more than 10 different types of facials and have the best day spa packages in West Knoxville, from a girls' day out to a couple’s retreat. 5. IV Hydration – Revitalist
I wish I would’ve had IV hydration therapy when I was pregnant with my kids. I suffer from HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarum), and this could have completely changed my health during pregnancy. Hydration Therapy restores your body with direct hydration and nutrient replenishment in ways that drinking water cannot. 34
