BIG EARS FESTIVAL TO RECEIVE $20,000 GRANT FROM NEA National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA's second major funding announcement for the fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $20,000 to Big Ears Festival for continued work to showcase music and art at the annual Knoxville event. After graduating from Tennessee Tech, Jeb and
Olivia Scoggins could’ve entered the workforce in a traditional way. Instead, they saw an opportunity and jumped on it. Knoxville’s first Pelican’s SnoBalls opened to the public in May 2017 and immediately enjoyed a hot, busy summer of serving more than 100 flavors of shaved ice to thirsty customers. There are the usual suspects — cherry and grape — but there are other flavors that don’t even come to mind until you read it on the menu, such as dill pickle and wedding cake. “First-timers get overwhelmed,” says Jeb, “but you can come back all summer and not repeat a flavor. We also have stuffed SnoBalls that have ice Pelican's Snoballs
cream in the middle.” There isn’t air-conditioned indoor seating at Pelican’s SnoBalls, but part of the patio is covered and provides nice shade. Pelican’s SnoBalls is a family-friendly place to cool down with a sweet treat.

Stand-up paddleboarding may not be the first thing one thinks of when it comes to cooling off in the summer, but what if you paddled at night? Whether midday or under a full moon, paddleboarding on the Tennessee River is one way to keep cool — particularly if you take a dip in water and grab a pint of craft beer afterward. “It’s easier than people think,” says Kenny Reed, who co-owns Billy Lush Boards & Brews with his wife, Angelina. “There’s a short learning curve, but we use large, stable boards. All of our equipment is down at the water, and our staff helps you on and tells you where to go. Then you have free reign.” For weary ones, Paddle Board 101 is offered every Saturday morning, and for fitness fans, SUP Yoga is offered on Sunday afternoons.

Four years ago Zack Roskop had an idea that would marry his love of Knoxville, its people and craft beer. After buying a used bus on Craig’s List and building a website, he opened Knox Brew Tours as the public’s backstage pass to local beer. “Beer is humble, but it’s not simple. We work with 12 breweries and go to four at a time. We give fully guided brewery tours where the general public isn’t allowed. We don’t drop you off and come back later,” Zack says. The tour focuses on the passion of brewing beer — what was its inspiration, what are its ingredients, what the process was from grain to glass. Zack created an experience unlike any other in Knoxville, and it’s a sure-fire way to keep cool on a hot summer night.

Before your restless young child utters the words, “I’m bored” one more time, pack a lunch, grab a towel and head to the nearest splash pad. Explore one of eight area splash pads from Powell and downtown Knoxville to Farragut and Northshore. These zero-depth fountains of fun are perfect for children of all ages and generally open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather-permitting. Sunscreen is a must since there is little shade to be found at splash pads, and occasionally you may find a birthday party or two gathering nearby. WHEN LEM OWNBY PASSED AWAY IN 1984 AT THE AGE OF 94, IT SIGNALED THE END OF AN ERA. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established in 1934, and in the process of designating land for the park, there were a handful of residents who weren’t interested in moving. Lem made a deal with the government in a lifetime lease to stay on his Elkmont property. He sold honey to keep a quiet, modest living. Even after his wife, Mimmie, passed away, Lem wasn’t interested in relocating. Fast forward to August 2010. Ownby’s great-greatnephew, Kevin Hill, opened an outfitter in Cedar Bluff and named it after the true mountaineer. Inspired by Uncle Lem’s fervor for the outdoors and focused on providing customers with exactly the gear they need, Kevin staffs the store with enthusiasts and carries the tried-and-true brands. “You can be overwhelmed with choices,” Kevin says, “but my job is to be a personal consultant. Our staff needs to reflect our customers. We have to have the knowledge and be relatable.” As a father of five under age 10, Kevin knows something about life in the wild. His past is full of whitewater rafting trips and rock climbing excursions, yet Kevin keeps to short day trips since his family is still young. THE SOUTH SIDE IS A COCKTAIL CLASSIC THAT DATES TO AT LEAST 1917 — IT'S IN THE LAST AMERICAN COCKTAIL BOOK PRINTED BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF PROHIBITION. The South Side enjoyed fame as the house cocktail at New York's famed 21 Club for years but was all but forgotten in the later 20th Century. This refreshing combination of gin, lime, mint and sugar has once again found fans since the cocktail renaissance of the early 2000s. Libacious bartender Casey Fox shares her recipe.

INGREDIENTS ++ 2 ounce Plymouth or London
Want something less potent? Pour it over ice and top it with club soda and you have a South Side Fizz, perfect for sipping on the porch on a hot July afternoon.

++ 3/4 ounce. fresh lime juice ++ 3/4 ounce simple syrup ++ 8-10 mint leaves
DIRECTIONS In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle mint and simple syrup. Add gin, lime juice and ice, and shake until chilled. Double strain into a cocktail glass. If you’re making the fizz version, double strain into a highball filled with ice, and top with 1 1/2 ounces of club soda.
