A PERFECT NIGHT OUT WITH THE GUYS SUTTREE’S HIGH GRAVITY TAVERN AND HARROGATE’S LOUNGE

16

West Knoxville Lifestyle | June 2018

ARTICLE JENNIE TREADWAY-MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY PEDRO MENDOZA

SIX YEARS AGO, MATT PACETTI AND HIS WIFE, ANNE, SEIZED ON AN OPPORTUNITY TO OPEN A CRAFT BEER BAR NEXT DOOR TO THE LIQUOR STORE WHERE HE WORKED ON GAY STREET. Four years later, they opened an adjacent arcade and connected the two. Now, Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern and Harrogate’s Lounge make for a perfect night out, compete with food, drinks and a competitive round of Skee-Ball. “The craft beer thing was going to happen, whether we did it or not, but the arcade? What a great concept,” Matt says. “You can have a cocktail while you play Galaga. I was born in 1980 and never grew out of that age.” Enter either establishment through its front door and enjoy crossing over as the mood strikes. Another drink, another game, a second bowl of ramen. “The coolest thing is when people get excited in the arcade,” he says. “They want to play all the games, which is how I feel walking into an arcade. People get really serious about their foosball.”

HOT SPOT

Eat The menu at Suttree’s is a step above simple: a grilled cheese sandwich, elevated; smoked pork, a little fancy. It’s the ramen, though, that brings people back. The ramen dishes were a “happy accident,” according to Matt, who enjoyed the simple dish and doctored it to make it better. It caught on and took off with five different varieties of the noodle soup, from vegetarian and breakfast style to spicy and beefy. Who knew an old standby could be so good?

Drink

As all craft beer bars should, Suttree’s rotates its beer menu almost daily. When a barrel runs out, staff pop on a new one—no fuss needed. Suttree’s keeps the menu diverse in flavor and price point, so patrons won’t dare run out of new pints to try. If beer isn’t your thing, the bar is stocked with everything needed for a popular cocktail or something off the menu. The selections of bourbon, brandy, scotch and wine offer something for everyone.

RESTAURANT ROUND UP

Play From foosball and pinball machines (old and new) to pool tables and standard arcade games like Pac-Man, Harrogate’s is a playground like no other downtown. Coined the “misfit sister” of Suttree’s, Harrogate’s is home to Skee-Ball and darts, among other old-school entertainment systems. Create a tournament among your friends and see who comes out on top. If playing arcade games isn’t your thing, you can still pay homage to our local royalty and spy an original 1970s Dolly Parton pinball machine.

P e t e At h e rt o n co-founder of 100 Men Who Care Knoxville Engineer and business owner Pete Atherton started the 100 Men Who Care chapter in Southern Maine several years ago, so when he and his wife moved to Knoxville to escape New England winters, chartering 100 Men Who Care in Knoxville was the natural next step. Alongside Thomas Krajewski and Alan Moore, and a steering team with Brandon Bruce, Christopher Ayala and Mike Mangione, the organization kickstarted in February with its first meeting. More than 100 men showed up, far exceeding the group’s expectations. The group's first $10,000 donation went to The Change Center. “Being a newcomer to the city, I’m impressed with how well people are connected and well-intentioned,” Pete says. “It’s exciting to be a part of 100 Men Who Care, especially since there was already an interest. For some, $10,000 is a huge part of their budget. The more local, the better.” Pete is the president and founder of ActionsProve and author of Reversing Burnout.

co-founder of 100 Men Who Care Knoxville Knoxville native Thomas Krajewski started his career as a fly-fishing guide at Blackberry Farms, then shifted into land development and conservation. As his career flourished, Thomas looked for ways to give back and increase his impact on his community. When two circles of influence started talking about 100 Men Who Care, he saw the stars aligning. Within a year, 100 Men Who Care was official and word spread quickly. “What made it a great sell is that it’s well-positioned for 30- to 60-year-olds with families, careers and a busy life but who want to give back,” he says. “We meet once a quarter, and each give $100 to a nonprofit that we vote for. It’s a commitment of $400 per year. Knoxville is a giving town. This is a great way to plug in and get started on that process.” Thomas is a land broker for National Land Realty. He and his wife have two children.

GUYS WHO GIVE BACK (CON TI N U ED)

Alan Moore co-founder of 100 Men Who Care Knoxville Alan Moore served as the president of the Young Professionals of Knoxville, as well as part of the Young Alumni Council at the University of Tennessee, so service to others was already a priority. When the idea to start a 100 Men Who Care was presented to him, Alan struggled to find enough committed people—that is, until he talked to the right people. “I reached out to Thomas, and it took off when Pete got to town. We’ve given money to charity and to church, but it was always small amounts,” he says. “This opportunity came along to support a charity with an amount that’s meaningful.” Alan is an attorney and trust officer at First Tennessee Bank. He is married with three children.

Josh Smith owner of Master Dry Josh Smith didn’t grow up in church, but when he was in his 20s, he had an experience with God that changed his life. He went on a mission trip, and it left the kind of impact on him that lasts a lifetime. As he worked to build his business, Master Dry, he felt the calling to do more than provide quality service at a fair price. Josh knew he was meant to build a company with a mission to serve personally, locally, nationally and internationally. With a dream so big, it could only be accomplished through teamwork, commitment and prayer. “We have a purpose statement, which is to be a unique service company that radically serves our community: feeding the homeless, going into federal prisons to do a mock job training on how to interview, going to Panama to handout 400 soccer balls and $40,000 worth of food,” he says. “I say all the time it’s not what we do but who we are. I was shocked when I hired my first person, much less my 10th. Now I have 150 employees. I get to do more and impact more.” 22

West Knoxville Lifestyle | June 2018

Dan Thompson D.D.S. When Dr. Dan Thompson, D.D.S., had his interview for dental school where he was asked why he wanted to be a dentist, he said he wanted to work with his hands and have a respected place in the community. In addition to the decadeslong relationships he builds with patients, he enjoys seeing how simple procedures, such as teeth whitening and restoration, can change a person’s entire outlook on life. “Everything we associate with value we associate with a good smile,” he says. “People get very emotional and that makes it all worthwhile.” He and his staff work with Give Back a Smile, a program through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, which works to restore the smiles of women and men who’ve suffered dental injuries from domestic and sexual abuse.

CORE FOCUS OFTEN MEN LEAN TOWARDS HEAVY LIFTING, BUT WITHOUT CORE STRENGTH, THAT’S ASKING FOR AN INJURY. Stop trying to max out at the gym. Instead, take 30 minutes a few times a week to focus on your core. “These exercises target core stabilization and that’s often the area we neglect. They engage our kinetic chain,” says Dunstan Kendrick, owner of D-Block in Knoxville. “Everything works to stabilize and mobilize.” Dunstan is a graduate of Sequoyah High school, a four-year football letterman at Western Carolina University, and former graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Tennessee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and fitness management and runs D-Block, where he and his wife, Andrea, specialize in personal training and athletic performance.

“THE DUDE ABIDES”

FINANCIAL BUZZ

28

West Knoxville Lifestyle | June 2018

FINANCIAL ADVICE DERIVED FROM 'THE BIG LEBOWSKI' ARTICLE BILL WALTMAN, CFP, CPA

FILM BUFFS MAY RECOGNIZE THIS LINE FROM THE 1998 CULT CLASSIC "THE BIG LEWBOWSKI." In it, Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski is an unemployed slacker who loves bowling and becomes involved in a mix-up with a wealthy older man who shares his name. Played to perfection by Jeff Bridges, The Dude is plunged into a chaotic adventure after some unscrupulous types mistake him for his namesake, then take the rug in his living room and rough him up. The rest of the movie is about The Dude’s quest to get his rug back and his peace. "The Big Lebowski" is filled with memorable lines that fans of the movie love to quote. Surprisingly, some of these quotes have relevance to personal finance. “THE RUG REALLY TIED THE ROOM TOGETHER.” The Dude’s world revolved around how his rug tied his living room and world together, bringing peace and harmony. The equivalent in the financial world is a well-crafted financial plan that reflects your unique values and aspirations. This plan should be the centerpiece of your financial life, ensuring the different pieces are working together. A lot of dudes love to talk investments but don’t give much thought to a comprehensive plan of which investments are just one component. Applying the same focus to your financial plan as The Dude did in reclaiming his stolen rug will serve you very well. “JUST TAKE IT EASY, MAN.” Responsible men, unlike The Dude, often stress about providing for their families. These stressors can range from adequately funding retirement to paying for college and caring for elderly parents. The exercise of creating and implementing a values-based financial plan can greatly relieve this stress. It can answer that nagging question: Are we going to be okay? You’ll then have the confidence to say, “Take it easy, man. We’re going to be fine.” A very Dude-like statement. “THE DUDE ABIDES.” Life isn’t easy. Just when you think things are rolling along smoothly, life happens. Be it the loss of a job, unexpected medical bills or major home repairs not covered by insurance, the unexpected can introduce financial stress and uncertainty. A properly constructed financial plan should have already taken into consideration these unexpected events, not specifically by name but through the use of conservative assumptions and shock absorbers built into the plan itself. Knowing this will enable you to face the unexpected with The Dude’s Zen-like demeanor. “Whatever, man, The Dude abides.” The foundation of a well-ordered financial life is a properly constructed plan. It is the centerpiece that ties everything together. Operating without one results in needless stress and uncertainty. If you don’t have one, start building that foundation today by contacting a local certified financial planner professional who has a values-based approach to planning. The result will be peace and harmony in your financial life. A very Dude-like existence!
