Life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths. For Traci Halky, owner of the Nothing Bundt Cakes on New Britain Avenue in West Hartford, the journey took a life-affirming turn when she decided to bring a bit of sweetness to her Connecticut community. While living in South Florida, Traci and her family discovered a special bakery they loved to visit. Nothing Bundt Cakes became their go-to place to find happiness and indulge in sweet treats. “And when COVID hit, we decided to change things up and move back to New England. I was a lawyer but when I weighed the
options to continue as a lawyer in Connecticut or do something different, I picked something different.” She became the franchise owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in West Hartford. The Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise is a community of likeminded individuals who value exceptional product quality and strong core values. For Traci, this was pivotal as she aimed to create a place where employees and customers felt comfortable and cherished.
The franchise shines a spotlight on establishing genuine connections within each community. Concentrating on events, donations, and other community-oriented activities with an emphasis on giving back struck a chord with Traci. “It was really important to me to be a giving member of West Hartford. It’s not just about making money, but about being happy while doing it. Traci and Nothing Bundt Cakes have become a symbol of community support and generosity. From sponsoring events, giving cakes to new members of the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce, donating cakes to nonprofits, and actively participating in community initiatives, her bakery has proved to be a cornerstone of kindness and outreach. “I get to deliver cakes to new members and say ‘welcome to the chamber’. And we were the New Business of the Year for 2023 so that was very exciting!” One heartwarming initiative is her partnership with Futures, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to helping people with disabilities live an inclusive life within their communities through individualized education and employment. She was the dessert sponsor for this year’s annual fundraiser and engaged the students in making the treats at the bakery, creating a meaningful experience for all involved. And the bakery’s influence doesn’t end there. Her employees, often young adults, find a nurturing and welcoming environment. The bakery offers not just a place of work but a platform for personal and professional growth, underpinned by genuine care and compassion. The bakery staff includes Sarah Smith, Traci’s cousin and manager “who is just so important to me and to the success of the bakery.” All the staff, she adds, takes immense pride in their creations and with their handcrafted decorations. Traci’s bakery offers a wide array of special-occasion cakes featuring handmade bows and personalized touches. Their tagline, “Give thanks and be sweet to each other,” reflects their core values and commitment to kindness. The business has been a transformative journey for Traci’s family as well. She actively includes her children in her business, teaching them the importance of giving back to the community and spreading joy. “My children get to experience firsthand the magic of celebrating life’s moments with others,” Traci says. Three years after launching Asana Organic Skin Care & Beauty in Glastonbury, local entrepreneurs Tida and Alex Bukowski are expanding and have opened a second location in Avon. The new spa, Tida says, will include all of the unique organic and innovative services she offers in Glastonbury, and so much more. At almost triple the size, the Avon location will allow her to offer a more immersive day spa experience and accommodate groups for spa parties, events, and more. The organic spa treatments include facials, massage, body treatments, makeup, waxing, brow shaping and henna
tinting, lash lifts and tints, LED treatments and an infrared sauna, along with numerous new holistic treatments. “It’s going to be a whole mind-body experience where you can spend an entire day enjoying our many spa treatments as well as services like infrared sauna, traditional steam sauna, Himalayan salt therapy, a cold plunge pool.” The spa will have four treatment rooms and a “relaxation area,” on top of grass turf. Each of the treatment rooms, Tida adds, are designed to look like “mini-houses, to make you feel like you’re outside in nature when you’re in the spa.

feel this new spa is a transformational place.” Tida Bukowski “The decor has so many natural elements: whitewashed wood, barn doors, various plants, flowers, and hanging horticulture so you can feel close to nature even on a cold winter day. It’s going to be everything I dreamed of for a new spa.” Tida opened her Glastonbury Asana Organic Skin Care & Beauty spa in 2020. She got the business off the ground with the help of her husband and business partner, Alex Bukowski. Other family members helped out as well. Alex’s father, Jeff Bukowski and his brother, Eric Bukowski helped to build out the interior of Asana both in Glastonbury and Avon. Her mother, Fon Camfield, assisted in designing the space. “The entire place was a family affair, it was really built with love and we designed every inch of the space.” Born in Thailand but raised mostly in Connecticut, Tida brings her strong Eastern connections to her life and her business. “I incorporate my culture into the business and every time I go back to Thailand I bring back something special for the spa,” Tida says. “A love and deep appreciation for different cultures, traditions and rituals are woven into the fabric of our offerings here at Asana. I love learning how people ‘spa’ in other parts of the world and I love sharing that with clients.” The new spa, like the one in Glastonbury, was blessed by a Buddhist Thai monk prior to opening “so it has really great energy.”

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

An easy, crowd-pleasing holiday recipe Roasted Applesauce ingredients • 10 large apples (Golden Delicious, Macoun, or Honeycrisp, for instance.) • Pinch of kosher salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar.
directions Applesauce is applesauce, right? Judy Rodgers, the Zuni Café chef known for her impeccable palate and lack of fussiness, knew better. To make her delicious roasted applesauce, peel, core, and coarsely chop about 10 large apples - you want 6 pounds (2.7kg) chopped apples. Toss with a pinch of kosher salt and the sugar sugar. Spread the apples on rimmed baking sheets and cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 375°F (190°C) until soft, 30 to 40 minutes. Uncover and raise the heat to 500°F (260°C) to brown the apples for a few minutes. Mash them with the back of a fork until you have a chunky applesauce (about 5 cups/700g). Stretch Your Fruit Use this same technique for other fruits, such as pears, peaches, or plums. Spoon it over cake or Greek yogurt, or on top of ricotta toasts.
