Strong Women
I
was a single mom for 13 years and with that came a lot of do-it-myself projects. Over the years, I have told y’all about my lack of skill when it comes to plants but what I haven’t shared is that I am AWESOME at reading directions. When IKEA came to Texas my sister and I made the trek to Frisco to check it out. I purchased a myriad of items including a TV stand, that I still have today. I was unfamiliar in the ways of IKEA back then and that may very well be why that was my one and only trip. I digress, now back to my AWESOME direction reading skills. When I got home and laid out the 1 million pieces that belonged to this 4 ft. by 3 ft. TV stand, I knew I had gotten myself into a hot mess (this is when I learned what an Allen wrench is). I started on a Saturday afternoon and finished Sunday night with little to no parts left over. The feeling of self-satisfaction I get every time I look at this 18-year-old, out dated piece of furniture is unmeasurable. This month’s issue is a true testament to the power of social media. I found each one of these ladies, with the exception of the new West Side Commander, on some form of social media. The Cowtown Couture ladies keep a lot of my friends accessorized and style forward. Kari Shuler had me mesmerized with her artistic approach to beauty and makeup. I love to see all people, female or male, doing well and following their dreams. As always I hope to see you around town!

In 2009, Medi Weightloss of South Fort Worth opened its doors, and I became patient number one. There really was something different about this program, and it worked. I was able to lose almost 30 pounds, three shy of my goal weight. For me, weight loss has been a lifelong struggle. After almost reaching my goal, I allowed myself to slip into my habits. And I gained it all back. Along the way, the staff of Medi never gave up on me. Between 2010 and 2016, I restarted a couple of times. Then one day, it clicked. I was 51, 30+ pounds overweight, and borderline diabetic. I wanted to live to meet my grandchildren. I was ready to do this. On September 19, 2016, patient #1 walked back in the doors of Medi. On January 2, 2017, I reached my goal weight of 125. Every weight loss program promises to be the one. But Medi Weightloss is the one that works. What have I learned on my journey to health? You have the power to do and be everything you dream of, especially when you have the tools and support of people like the ones I found at Medi. Call Today 817-737-2700 or 817-263-8800.

Department’s visibility in the community exemplifies this trust, and breaks down the barriers that can
exist in other cities between police and citizens. An example of this stance, the Neighborhood Patrol Officer program, places officer liaisons into area neighborhoods. These specially
-designated officers help answer questions, provide assistance, and put a familiar, friendly face on FWPD. With the recent, further addition of division commanders, Fort Worth Police Department takes the next step forward into fine-tuned police work and neighborhood service. The addition of division commanders creates another layer of accountability for focused regions of the city. The latest West Division commander, Lieutenant Cynthia O’Neil, brings a wealth of experience into her new position. “I’ve been in the department for 22 years,” says Lt. O’Neil. “I’ve worked all over in different capacities. In 2002, I became a detective for the western division. After my promotion to sergeant, I was later sent back to western as a patrol unit.”

I
t all began one day in the summer of 2016. What started as a casual lunch conversation between two friends quickly evolved
into a business idea. The end of lunch saw the securement of a tax ID, and Cowtown Couture was officially born. The brainchild of two stay-at-home moms, Angela Williams and Amanda Wear, Cowtown Couture began as a Facebook group to swap clothes among friends and acquaintances in Ridglea Hills. Today, just around a year since its foundation, Cowtown Couture has grown to become one of the hottest boutiques in Fort Worth. Still firmly rooted in an online-only presence, the original Facebook group now counts over 6,000 members. We caught up with Amanda and Angela to ask a few questions about the boutique everyone’s talking about.
What inspired the creation of Cowtown Couture? AMANDA: Honestly, it was a very spur of the moment idea. We
have kids who are similar in age. We were at lunch one day after a camp pick-up last summer, and started talking about how it would be fun to have a boutique. We thought it would be neat to keep it all online and do it through social media. We applied for a business license that very day. Originally it was just meant to be small, for our friends to pick up clothes from our porches. We’re both very fortunate it has grown beyond that.
How has it grown and evolved since the beginning? ANGELA: All the growing of our business came through customer
service, customer loyalty, all those things built upon the two of us and the work we’ve invested. We do live videos, so people recognize and know us. We have expanded beyond our guest room, and now sublease a space that has really allowed us to have storage and organize pop-ups when we want to. We also continually learn about the website as we go along as well. It helps us organize the extra merchandise we need to allow people to shop.
How does it differ from other area boutiques? AMANDA: First of all, we have low overhead and pass that savings
onto our customer. Some of our items you can find in a brick and mortar,

very year, men, women, and children seek out Fort Worth’s The Women’s Center to receive hope, crises resolution, job services, or emotional healing. As a community, The Women’s Center acts to treat the
most pernicious problems within a community: unemployment, rape and child abuse, low wages, depression, and the desperate situations created through an intersection of crisis, violence, and poverty. This indispensable place exists to service and care for the most vulnerable members of our community. Today, you can step forward to serve and support The Women Center’s noble mission. As a living resource for our community, the Women’s Center needs active support to survive. At the bare minimum, we can each at least spread the word of this resource’s availability, and thus expand the scope of its reach. As a community resource, the Women’s Center serves several functions simply not available elsewhere. “We have the mission to inspire, teach, and empower women and families to overcome violence, crisis, and

A CENTER FOR ALL OF US (CON TI N U ED)
Words like these spurred on the organization of the early The Women’s Center, and led to programs that continue to provide women with the opportunity to earn enough income to sustain their families. The need for rape crisis services became readily apparent, and in 1980, the Women’s Center added a rape rise program to support victims of sexual assault and abuse. Over the years, additional programs have become added, as the scope and caring of this organization has broadened. “Other programs have been added over the years, including our general counseling program, but the core services provided by The Women’s Center have consistently served women, men, and children of Tarrant County for over 30 years. From a small staff of volunteers, we can now count over 70 employees across offices in Fort Worth and Arlington,” says Francine McQueen. As for the program that serves the largest amounts of clients, look no further than the Rape Crisis and Victim Services Program. Across local hospital rape exams, to therapy, legal assistance, and accompaniment through the criminal justice system, this admirable program has defended the defenseless in Tarrant County. Additionally, clients at The Women’s Center rarely know about the broad selection of other programs currently available. “Many people are surprised to learn about our newest program for elderly adults, which is provided through the General Counseling Program. Our PEARLS program provides in-home counseling for individuals aged 65 or older who suffer from depression or social isolation.” The Women’s Center also serves men, women, and children across all of its programs. A major misconception occurs when individuals fail to perceive this rich resource center as a watch guard for their lives. Financial support provides the richest way in which people can support the laudable missions of this organization. “The only way that we are able to provide quality services to women, men, and children is through the financial support of our community,” 20

The Monster Mash gala is one of two annual fundraisers for The Women’s Center, and has raised over three-quarters of a million dollars for it in the past 5 years. “This party is such a fun way to ensure the sustainability of programs and services that change people’s lives,” says President and CEO Laura Hilgart.” The Monster Mash Storybook Bash will take place on Friday, October 13th at 7:30 p.m. This year’s Storybook theme will invite enchanted characters from near and far to descend upon the Omni Fort Worth Hotel. A night of frights and delights gets hosted by event authors, co-chairs Tasa Anderson, Ashley Baker, Angela Wonderly, and Anne Weiskittel, and the party promises to be a fun night of celebration filled with food, dancing, and just a dash of seasonal mayhem. As co-chair Anne Weiskittel says, “I am thrilled to be a part of this magical evening, supporting a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I have witnessed the hope and peace that the Women’s Center can bring to families in crisis, and it is truly a blessing to have this amazing organization in our community. Thanks to a dedicated and passionate staff, a hard working committee, and a room full of generous people who know how to have a great time, this year’s Monster Mash promises to uphold the tradition of being Fort Worth’s party of the year!”

COLOR YOUR STYLE
(CON TI N U ED)
nd they should know, having designed hundreds of homes across the United States over the last 30 years. “Different colors truly mean different things to different people. For example, gray is supposed to be a cool and relaxing color, but for some people it’s depressing,” Bone says. “It depends on the person and their background, where they came from, their experiences, what they love and want to be around.” Hancock feels the same. “Everyone that walks in our door has a different story and perspective. That’s why we start by listening; trying to get the whole picture of your lifestyle, family and needs before we talk design.” To determine what colors to use for a design project, the duo says it’s often based on whether you’re starting from a clean slate or whether you have things you need to work around. But at the heart of it, the color you choose should be something that makes you feel good. “One of my classic questions,” Bone says, “is if you could wake up to one color every morning in your room, what would that color be?” “We also look at what colors a person loves to wear because generally whatever color you feel good in, is something you’ll feel comfortable with in your home,” Hancock says. But can you have too much color? The duo says not necessarily, however, there are things you need to take into consideration.
“A lot of floor plans now are so open," Hancock says. "You have to make sure when you’re standing in one room and seeing three others that the colors flow together, so it doesn’t seem disjointed. You don’t have to stick to one color for the walls, but they all need to work together.” 24
West FW Lifestyle | September 2017
“People used to think you pick three colors and take them through the whole house—we don’t do that," Bone adds. "And you don’t have to do that, although your painter may want you to.”
When it’s all said and done, Bone and Hancock believe the most important thing is to do what you think is beautiful.
Design Tips • Pick your fabrics first and your wall color last. Wall color should come from fabrics such as your upholstery and window cover-
As to why builders often use a neutral palette throughout, “Sometimes neutral colors are chosen simply to not make a mistake in color choice. Because with these universal colors the thought is that no one will hate it,” Bone says. “But then again, that’s why most people absolutely love the model houses— they don’t take just three colors. And that’s why they’re interesting.” When it comes to trends, Baylor Bone Interiors stays on the cutting edge “Grassy greenery is the color you’ll hear about for the next 12 months; it’s a green with a yellow tinge. Gray is starting to go out, with the trend going to more of a taupe color. Also, gold is coming back, particularly for bathroom fixtures.” However, the duo says trends are not for everybody.
ings so everything pulls together more cohesively. • Ceilings are a good way to bring in a special touch by using different textures. • If you have a neutral palette but want to bring in color, you can easily incorporate it through the use of art, pillows and accents that pull the color throughout the room. • Instead of having a number of projects going, start and finish in one area. It’s less stressful and gives you more satisfaction to see a beautiful, completed space before moving to your next project.
“It’s not always easy to just pop one of these colors into your house as is,” Hancock says. When it’s all said and done, Bone and Hancock believe the most important thing is to do what you think is beautiful. “It’s not about us or the trend; it’s about making it work for you,” Hancock says. “We give advice, we’ll do as little or as much as you want, giving the biggest impact for your budget, but it’s your home, and we want you to love it,” Bone adds. And with the style and colors that best fit you and your family, love it you will. September 2017 | West FW Lifestyle

ARE MADE-UP PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST KARI ANN SHULER LIVES HER DREAM ON A DAILY BASIS
W
hen women reminisce about childhood passions, or career ideas that persisted through high school, makeup artist surely ranks
alongside veterinarian and fashion designer. A combination of artistry and mystique define the imagined life of the makeup artist, with every day an adventure and every client a fresh canvas. Kari Ann Shuler lives this dream on daily basis. Ironically, it wasn’t until already a student enrolled at TCU that she discovered her drive for makeup artistry. “It was the fall of 2006, and I attended TCU as a radio, TV, and film major,” says Kari. “I took a stage makeup class through the theater department. It wasn’t until I noticed that I had the most fun out of anyone that this was something I might pursue as a career.” In the intervening years, Kari’s career has blossomed, so that now she can call herself the premier freelance makeup artist in the Metroplex. Along the way, she has learned to love her career even more as both a professional, personal, and artistic outlet. “Every single new person that I meet is its own endeavor,” says Kari. “Everyone has different eye shapes, different skin tones. Each client is a new adventure.” 28

On a personal level, this dream job stands as its own continual source of inspiration. As every client serves as a new adventure, each also provides her own inspiration. “I like helping people feel good,” says Kari. “Seeing the look on someone’s face after a quick makeover, or on their wedding day, it’s a great feeling. I consider it a gift, to see that look in someone’s eyes when they feel good about themselves.” As most people would imagine, a large portion of the professional makeup artist’s life revolves around weddings. Nuptials hardly provide the only reason to employ Kari’s services, however. Practically any special occasion can provide a reason to call for professional help. Though

Parting Thoughts
Aunt Dru’s
Old Fashioned
Banana Bread with a Twist ARTICLE MISSY WILL
O
ne of the smells that remind me of my home is my Aunt Dru's banana
bread. I make this when I want to bring back memories of my childhood, and I am sure it will for you as well.
• 1/2 cup butter or a little more • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 3 bananas finely crushed (for a bit more moist and delicious, try 4 bananas) • 1 1⁄2 cups flour (you can use gluten-free; almond and coconut flour work well) • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt, kosher • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (I use the paste) • 2/3 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
DIRECTIONS
1. Cream together butter and sugar. 2. Add eggs and crushed bananas. 3. Combine well. 4. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla and walnuts. 5. Mix until combined. Do not overmix. 6. Pour into greased and floured loaf pan. 7. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes. 8. Keeps well refrigerated, but it will not last long.
