Lifestyle Letter
Welcome 2017
I
have mixed emotions about 2016. I witnessed some absolutely terrible things happen to family, friends and the world in general, but I also witnessed some amazing blessings as well. I look at the new year as a chance for a fresh start in the aspects of my life that I feel are lacking. If I feel less connected spiritually, I start a new bible plan. If I see the scale number inching ever so much higher, I attempt a healthier version of Twinkies. Beginnings are usually scary but I feel exhilarated by them.
January’s issue is all about new beginnings and how and where to start. James Conley, trainer to the stars, and by stars I mean the motivated westsiders that know that he is the real deal. Vanessa Morales has a wonderful story on how she started a new lifestyle. Dr. Nikki Green, DDS offers up her expertise in dental health.

“Many parents with first-time kindergarten students don’t realize how early the application process starts for private schools. When you’ve only just started to accept that your child is headed to kindergarten in August, it can feel really stressful to find out that applications are due in January or February,” says Burgess. “It’s so important for parents to visit all the schools they are considering,” says Burgess. “Attend an admission event, spend time observing classes, talk with faculty members. The Trainer Who Understands PERSONAL TRAINER JAMES CONLEY BUILDS EVERY PROGRAM FROM SCRATCH TO MEET THE NEEDS OF CLIENTS. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY RICHARD DALTON
Tell me about yourself and how you got into the fitness business. Conley: I was the typical athlete, I guess. I’ve been in the business for 20 years or so, and went to Tarleton State, where I played football and ran track. I worked at a fitness center in Fort Worth, a couple of gyms, and decided to open my own place. As I got older, I decided to place more of an emphasis on helping people get fit. I was diagnosed with hypertension at an early age, and this has forced me to watch my diet and stay physically fit. The love of this has gotten me to where I am today.
I
f one-on-one work aligns best with your personality and fitness goals, then James Conley is your ideal partner. James — whose studio is located at 4826 Camp Bowie Boulevard — gives clients the benefits of extensive experience, along with an inspirational approach that can help anyone stay on track through the New Year. For James, fitness is not about looks or a single-minded focus. It’s a holistic practice that emphasizes the body’s particular needs. To learn more about fitness and the benefits of a personal trainer, this month will mark the beginning of a series of interviews with Mr. Conley.
14
West FW Lifestyle | January 2017
What sets your fitness program apart from those of other personal trainers? What kind of atmosphere do you promote in your gym? Conley: We only do one-on-one, personal training. It’s a small environment, so people get a lot of attention. I also dedicate a lot of my time to research, which I apply to my clients. I try to get people to focus on their longterm health. Everything depends on the age of the person. With older people, we tend to direct their attention to health issues and long-term goals. Basically, why should a person work out? It’s all about quality of life and being able to function in society. We’re all athletes, though we all don’t play sports. Life, for the most part, is built around functionality. You want to be as strong as you possibly can and have cardiovascular conditioning, because the heart is the most important muscle. You want to be able to hike, to walk, and to function in life; it’s not always about high level activities.
For a new client, how would you go about designing a program? Conley: When they first come in, I do an evaluation and put them through a series of tests. I help them determine their current fitness level and look at what they’re eating. As part of the evaluation, I ask them questions, and perform a series of simple tests to give me a pretty good idea of a person’s current fitness level. All workouts are based on the individual. If a person is sports-specific, we’ll have different workouts. Some people come in and need to lose weight, so I’ll steer them towards cardiovascular. Some people come in and are not very strong, so I’ll go more for strength training. If people come in and are in good shape and pretty strong, we’ll do something that covers it all, a maintenance program. I start almost everyone at ground zero, then advance based on how their body responds. What sorts of workout errors or bad practices do you see people engaging in? Conley: First and foremost, doing too much too soon. Just remember that it’s not a destination, it’s a journey. Lots of people get overexcited and overzealous initially. Another big one is only working out the vanity muscles, which creates imbalance that is detrimental to the joints. Every muscle has an opposite and equal group.
For people who only want to work certain muscles, like pecs or biceps for guys, or women who only want to do legs, it creates a muscle imbalance that jeopardizes the body. On the other side of the spectrum, some people simply don’t do enough. What type of fitness goals do you feel particularly suited to encouraging? Conley: Fitness is a lifestyle. It’s a journey, not a destination. My goal for each one of my clients is to just be in better shape than they were yesterday. There’s no comparison between clients, and we just try to get each individual person to be the best that they can be. Truly, what you do to your body from the age of 30 will either help or haunt you for the rest of your life.

L
ife insurance is a valuable asset, but over time you may find that your life insurance no longer fits your situation. You might be surprised to learn that in addition to your home, stocks, bonds and antiques, your life insurance is another asset you can sell. Life insurance policies can be converted to immediate cash through a life settlement, but as many as 85 percent of seniors don’t realize this option is available, according to a survey conducted by Coventry Direct. A life settlement is a financial transaction in which a policyowner sells an unneeded life insurance policy for more than they would have received from the insurance company if they were to lapse or surrender the policy. Most life insurance policy types qualify, including universal life, whole life, variable life, survivorship and even term life policies. Among the reasons you might consider a life settlement: • Your life insurance policy is too expensive to maintain. If your premium payments have continued to increase, your policy may no longer be affordable. However, simply allowing the policy to lapse results in a total loss of the premiums you have paid. • You have more life insurance than you currently need. As your circumstances and need for financial protection change, you may want to reduce the overall insurance you own. For example, if your policy was intended to pay off your mortgage in the event of your death, but you’ve since sold the home or paid off your mortgage, you may not need the same amount of coverage. • You need help with increasing medical or long-term care expenses. Selling your policy can help cover your immediate needs for health care or other unforeseen medical expenses. • Increasing your retirement funds will increase your peace of mind. The proceeds from the sale of your policy can help boost your savings and supplement your retirement income. • Your debt load exceeds your comfort level. Whether a single emergency incident or a combination of variables compounded your debt, working your way out can be emotionally and mentally draining, but applying untapped assets to reduce the burden may help. For example, one policyowner no longer had a need for several life insurance policies totaling $500,000. The life insurance company would only pay him the cash surrender value of $28,500. Instead, he contacted Coventry Direct and was able to sell the policies for $110,000, which he used to supplement his retirement and plan a family vacation.

TRI FORT WORTH -- THE CITY'S FIRST TRIATHLON EVENT -- TAKES PLACE MAY 21ST.
ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS
T
he triathlon: no sporting event inspires quite the same mixture of curiosity, intimidation, and awe. Like modern day gladiators, triathlon runners measure themselves against the dual challenges of road and water, armed only with their natural strength and a bicycle. If you've ever wanted to test yourself to discover the limits of your fitness, a triathlon surely ranks alongside the full marathon as a premier challenge. Unfortunately, those in North Texas were presented with practically zero options among triathlon competition. This is all about to change, as Tri Fort Worth is coming to the city on May 21st. If you have only a vague understanding of the triathlon, you likely don’t appreciate the event’s logistical complexity. A multi-stage competition, the triathlon involves the completion of three sequential and continuous events. The three challenges, cycling, swimming, and running, utilize different muscle groups, and thus necessitate a comprehensive level of peak fitness. Triathletes compete against one another to attain the fastest overall completion of all three events. Athletes must learn how to quickly transition between events, manage their equipment, and cope with the mental and physical strain of the lengthy competition. For the opportunity to compete in this event, triathletes in Fort Worth can thank Tim Tarpley. As a triathlete 18

himself, Tim understands the demand for a homegrown competition. “I’ve been a triathlete for 18 years,” says Tim. “We started putting on events back in 2003 and 2004, and have always wanted to make this race happen. It was tricky to find a good area to do it that included a body of water. Everything fell into place with the improvements to Marine Creek. The Convention and Visitors Bureau also wanted to be a part of something, so it just started to grow.” Generally speaking, area triathletes had to travel, sometimes long distances, in order to find events. As one would imagine, Tim and his team have received a substantial amount of enthusiasm and interest for Tri Fort Worth. “We’ve gotten responses from all over the world,” says Tim. “This is really the only chance people in this area have to roll out of bed and do a race. This is our first year, and we’ve seen a lot of overall excitement.” Though registration for the event continues right until May 21st, Tim recommends that participants make the decision early. Unlike a 5k or fun-run, Tri Fort Worth necessitates months
of careful training in order to compete safely. As Saturday before the event in downtown a general rule of thumb, triathletes should have Fort Worth. THE TRAILHEAD HAS BECOME A ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR ALL ASPECTS OF A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS 22

“In the beginning, we just wanted to get people out to this great location fronting the river. We thought we could give people an access point to park and access the trail. We then saw that people wanted to congregate and check their bikes, and we saw a need for a community hangout.”

t’s no secret that Fort Worth loves the outdoors. From the Botanical Garden to the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, Sundance Square to the Trinity Trails, the city’s esteem for its outdoor spaces showcases a love for nature and healthful living. New Year’s resolutions for fitness often involve taking advantage of this bounty which surrounds us — after all, there’s no better way to overcome lethargy than to treat yourself to an afternoon outdoors. A workout routine and active habits form only a part of the puzzle, however, for those who want to revolutionize their lifestyles. Healthy food becomes an indispensable component of daily life, as do personal connections and a sense of community. Those who want to find all of these things in one convenient location need look no
further than The Trailhead at Clearfork. Originally opened as an access point to Trinity Trail and the river, The Trailhead has since become a one-stop experiential center for healthful and mindful living. Created in the fall of 2013 through the efforts of Cassco Development, The Trailhead at Clearfork has become a runaway success. An emphasis on health, fitness, and wellness informs the guiding ethos of The Trailhead, which combines a beautiful outdoor space with free fitness classes, delicious food, an unparalleled farmer’s market, and first rate retail. Angelica Cofoid, marketing and events director for Cassco, describes the project’s genesis: “In the beginning, we just wanted to get people out to this great location fronting the river. We thought we could give people an access point to park and access the trails, with restrooms and a water station. . We then saw that people wanted to congregate and check their bikes, and we saw a need for a gathering location.” The desire to acclimate people to this area grew out of Cassco’s expansive plans CONTINUED >

YOUR ACCESS POINT TO HEALTH (CON TI N U ED)
“ We w or k e d f or t w o y e ar s t o br ing F or t Wor t h a f ar mer s mar k e t in an ou t door, gr e en s e t t ing ,” s ay s A ngelic a. “ We launche d t his p as t A pr il, and no w have o ver 2 5 ar t is an, r ancher, and f ar mer vendor s .” for the Clearfork development. This mixed-used, master-planned development will provide the citizens of Fort Worth with miles of new riverfront access, along with 270 acres of living, retail entertainment, dining, office, and outdoor space. Planned to eventually encompass over 3 million square feet of office and retail space, along with 2,500 multi-family units, Clearfork has already made its mark through its events venue, Heart of the Ranch, and it’s multi-family project, The Kelton. The Trailhead, initially intended as a amenity to the area, has quickly become a central focus. “The fitness classes garnered an incredible following,” says Angelica. “Along with the farmer’s market, Press Cafe, and Mellow Johnny’s, it’s taken off, and we’ve been excited to see the city embrace the Trailhead. It’s exposed new people to our project and its different pieces, and become a one-stop hangout on Saturdays.” In a city as rich in history as Fort Worth, no new development comes without an investment in the past. In this sense, The Trailhead stands as one of the newest initiatives of the Edwards family, whose Edwards Ranch was founded in 1848. Originally 7,000 acres, the former ranch land once extended to the Fort Worth Zoo, Forest Park, and numerous other local touchstones. The family formed Cassco in the 1950s to oversee its various development projects. Large scale projects such as Clearfork got placed on hold in the 1980s due to the proposed construction of a tollway. Always patient and methodical with their stewardship, the Edwards family waited. With the 2014 completion of Chisholm Trail Parkway, the doorway finally opened for Clearfork — and we’re all the luckier as a result. For many people, the main appeal of The Trailhead remains its fitness classes. Every Saturday, The Trailhead provides free outdoor fitness classes to all and sundry. Inclusivity provides the watchword for these classes, as offerings exist for any age or exercise preference. Participants congregate on the sunny lawn of the Trailhead, and against a backdrop of the Trinity River and the vibrant sounds of the farmer’s market, connect

with their bodies and share in a free fitness experience provided through community partnerships. “We went out and found who was truly promoting a vision of health and wellness, and who wanted to make Fort Worth healthy and give back to the community,” says Angelica. “Our success spurred us to recognize greater need for year-round classes, and now it’s become a Saturday staple, with around 30 people per class.” From yoga to bootcamp to kickboxing, it’s possible for anyone to take advantage of the free offerings at Trailhead. Current partners include a selection of Fort Worth’s finest fitness providers: Indigo Yoga, PT Fitness, Fit 4 Moms. 9Round Kickboxing, Smart Barre, and many more. The farmer’s market at The Trailhead has quickly established itself as the weekly go-to for the health conscious and epicurean-minded alike. The Clearfork Farmers Market enables anyone to purchase farm-fresh produce and high-quality, locally made products in a beautiful outdoor setting. “We worked for two years to bring Fort Worth a farmers market in an outdoor, green setting,” says Angelica. “We launched this past April, and now have over 25 artisan, rancher, and farmer vendors.” The appeal of the location extends to these vendors, whose wares showcase a quality you simply can’t find in the walls of a traditional supermarket. Whether it’s handmade candles, honey, or farm-fresh vegetables and meat, the Clearork Farmers Market has you covered for a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. As for the onsite businesses, visitors can support two originals in Press Cafe and Mellow Johnny’s. Press Cafe brings the talents of chef extraordinaire Felipe Armenta to The Trailhead. The casual and healthy menu provides fuel and comfort to patrons of The Trailhead, and features indoor, trailside, and rooftop seating to enjoy its delectable breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop has become a nexus for the cycling enthusiasts of the Trinity Trails. Founded in Austin, this homegrown Texas company’s Fort Worth
store has an extensive showroom of mountain, road, hybrid and children bikes, along with repair services, rentals, and accessories. Right next door, Pedal Hard Training gives you the opportunity to put your new gear to use, and offers workouts and training for triathletes and cyclists alike. Regardless of your health goals, whether you want to eat better, get more exercise, or engage with the community, The Trailhead can serve as your headquarters in the New Year. Get out and enjoy our beautiful city — The Trailhead makes it easy.

for Fort Worth DR. GREEN'S PERSONABLE APPROACH TAKES THE FEAR OUT OF DENTISTRY -- AND HER STATE-OF-THE-ART TECH KEEPS EVERYONE HEALTHIER.
ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY RICHARD DALTON
A
s a beloved dentist and owner of one of Fort Worth’s premier practices, Dr. Nikki Green has performed a kind of hat trick: she’s made dentistry a pleasure for her patients. A specialist in general, cosmetic, implant, and sedation dentistry, Dr. Green combines cutting edge technology with a personable approach that makes office visits into a practical joy. To help make more converts to the benefits of dental health, we spoke with Dr. Green about her background, practice, and recommendations for daily maintenance. Please share with our readers a little about yourself and your background. Dr. Green: I’m a dentist, wife, and mother to a 13-yearold son. My husband is also a dentist, so we talk a lot about teeth in our family. I’m 39, and started my practice nine years ago, when I bought it in-between the holidays of Christmas and New Year’s. The former owner was a third-generation dentist, so I had some big shoes to fill. My husband works with me, on average, about four days a month. He’s had his own practice in Abilene for over 25 years, and is very loyal to his strong patient base.
28
West FW Lifestyle | January 2017
What are the services you offer? Dr. Green: We are a full-service adult dental practice. Our services run the gamut from simple cleanings and fillings and hygiene care, to much more extensive stuff such as rebuilding an entire mouth. We place and restore a lot of dental implants, and we do a lot of cosmetic dentistry. Our biggest focus is probably the cosmetic dentistry, and we help lots of people who want to make changes to the appearance of their teeth. We also perform a new and advanced service called Fixed Hybrid Prosthesis. With this, someone who has hopeless teeth, none of which can be saved, can get full implants performed in a single day. Are there any new procedures/services you think people should know about? Dr. Green: We’re very involved in dental technology in our practice, and have some of the latest and greatest. For example, we have Galileo’s Cone Beam technology, which is basically a CT scan for your mouth. This has revolutionized the way we do dental implants. Before, implants were a little unpredictable, since you really didn’t know three-dimensionally where the bone was in the mouth. Because of this, a lot of dental implants would fail. With Galileo’s Cone Beam, it’s really uncommon for a dental implant to go bad. We can use it and know exactly where
an implant will go, and patients can sit in a chair and watch us virtually place the implant right into the bone. We can also tell patients with about 90% surety whether they can have a tooth on the implant that day. We also use a technology called Cerec, which allows us to make crowns in a day. In the past, you had to go in a get a tooth prepared, wear a temporary for a month, then go back in for a second appointment. With Cerec, we have a camera and image presented right there, and the patients sit and get crowns made and put in the same day. We can even take that technology further and do same-day smile makeovers. What regular dental care regimens do you recommend people do for themselves? What about periodic check-ups and cleanings? Dr. Green: We always recommend that people see their dentist every six months for routine cleanings and check-ups. You should
also, of course, brush and floss at home. We’re big advocates of power toothbrushes, and recommend Sonicare to our patients. We also recommend water-picking, and if you really want to keep your mouth, teeth, and gums healthiest, you should incorporate all these things. What are some of the most common problems you see with how people take care of their teeth? Dr. Green: Neglect is definitely the thing I see the most. People don’t even really know what’s inside their mouth. If they have an infection on their arm, they’ll do something about it. People will have broken or infected teeth and just ignore them, though it could require extensive dentistry to fix. Things that would have been a small problem become much larger through neglect. People also just don’t know how important it is to see your dentist regularly. To learn more about Dr. Green and her services, visit her online at www.ngreendental.com.

Parting Thoughts
Confessions of an
ALMOST
SKINNY GIRL A
s I write this, I am eating a brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tart. What an idiot, considering it’s the month we’re all focused on health and fitness. It’s a JANUARY ritual. This is the month we all strategize. We frown at ourselves in the full-length mirror, which is really the rearview mirror of what we did in December. Now, if you were to give my silhouette an objective squint, and are not a Beverly Hills resident, you might conclude I’m on the slender side. Especially when my clothes strategically drape over my little bay window, otherwise known as (a quaint) protrusion in the tummy area. Chalk that up to middle age, a history of carrying two large babies and not having a 90210 zip code. Height and weight charts back up my claim of being vaguely, relatively, somewhat slender. Furthermore, recent cholesterol blood tests prove I neither snack on bologna-stuffed funnel cake nor guzzle half & half on a daily basis. I am okay. Yet, the Pop Tart. How do things like this happen? I have been known to roll 34

shopping carts where vegetarians and natural food snobs gather. I read labels and put tempting items back on the shelf if they seem too “chemical-y” or, as my youngest would say, have “a factory taste.” But now I am discussing the act of eating something naughty the exact month everyone has a PLAN to GET IN SHAPE. Here’s why: I believe rigidly depriving oneself, even in the clean slate promise of pure, crystalized January, will backfire. It’s the old “never say diet” philosophy. I live by it, because I know I would collapse from boredom pouring blue-tinted skim milk over Special Not OK cereal. Stomach growls and stalking celery never work for me. No reason to count calories either, because it’s fairly obvious a chain restaurant’s Decadent Whatever Mudslide dessert is worth its weight in cellulite. Anything delicious and gooey and on the back page of a menu will give you four digits. Forget the numbers. Go ahead, order it, take a few bites or three or four, then box it up for home and just pray you remembered to have sons back in the mid-’90s. That would make them teenagers now. Male teenagers–the golden family members who instinctively pounce the
square Styrofoam boxes mysteriously parked in the fridge. Everybody wins here. Sometimes, if my bay window offers too much of a view, or if I have trouble zipping up my jeans, I ever so casually put myself on a willy-nilly austerity program. A half-sandwich here, a nice apple instead of chips there. I find black coffee goes better with my outfit for a few weeks. Cream? What’s that? Garbage is always in the mix, though. No sense craving something for weeks and weeks. If it’s always allowed, it’s less vital. Trust me, that bad snack I just demolished (the one anyone squeezing a Thigh Master right now would kill for) had a slight cardboard aftertaste. For me, occasional junk food is fine, as long as I avoid the Los Angeles area and put a temporary hold on Victoria’s Secret model auditions. And speaking of secrets, here are three other things I do to maintain my almostsvelte-is-that-a-bay-window figure: 1. I sort of exercise—pathetic jogs or decent walks—with many, many bad weather sabbaticals. 2. I never drink stuff with sugar, real or fake. 3. Any time I go to the west coast, I pack Spanx.
