Home & Design Issue

Home. Just four letters, yet it holds so much meaning. It’s our sanctuary, our foundation, and the place where life unfolds. Home is where we begin and end each day, where our lives take shape, and where our hearts find rest. While the specifics of what “home” looks like vary for each of us, its significance is universal.

Author Wendy Wunder captured it perfectly: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” With that in mind, this month’s issue focuses on what makes home special—from the warmth of shared meals and thoughtfully designed spaces to the people who bring it all to life.

This month, we had the privilege of connecting with local businesses and individuals who shape this community. Their stories highlight the creativity, resilience, and heart that make this area feel like home. We hope that as you turn these pages, you’ll be inspired to strengthen your connections—whether within your neighborhood, your city, or your own walls.

Many of our readers tell us they hold onto this magazine long after the month on its cover, treasuring it as a piece of home—whether as coffee table art or a source of inspiration. That’s a tradition we’re proud to uphold, and we remain committed to delivering the value you expect each month.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Here’s to making this March a celebration of the spaces and people that matter most.

Happy March!

RYLEIGH HALL,

CLASS OF 2027 FORT WORTH COUNTRY DAY

RECENT SPORTS OR ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS?

I have played volleyball, basketball and softball throughout my time at FWCD. This year, in volleyball season, I was awarded team captain, earned All-Conference honors, and named Most Valuable Player. So far this basketball season, I have reached 1,000 career points and 200 career blocks, and recorded a triple-double (32 points, 27 rebounds, and 10 blocks against St. Andrew’s Episcopal School). I have also been named to two All-Tournament Teams. Right now, I am averaging 22.6 points, 14.9 rebounds and 5.6 blocks. Although volleyball and basketball hold special spots in my heart, softball is my passion.

PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS?

Sports are my passion, so my personal highlights are centered on my athletic pursuits. Hitting 1,000 career points is pretty cool. It hasn’t been done in girls basketball since 2020. Math and science are my favorite subjects in school, but I also love art and creating unique things.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND SPORTS?

Although it has been difficult to maintain rigorous academic and athletic schedules, I have balanced them with my academics by using my time wisely and working when I have free time between activities. My mantra is, ‘There is no better time than the present to get work done.’ While it has been an extremely challenging journey, it is very satisfying to see my hard work pay off in all of my sports and in the classroom.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

I have verbally committed to play softball at Stephen F. Austin State University. My sister, Reagan, who graduated from FWCD in 2024, also plays softball for the Jacks.

Timeless Elegance With Natural Stone

Integrity stone - Curating and customizing high-quality natural stone that complements and fits seamlessly into everyday life.

For Bobby and Karen Crow, natural stone is more than just a building material; it is art forged by nature. What began over 40 years ago with careers in the natural stone industry, their shared passion for service and craftsmanship blossomed into Integrity Stone of Fort Worth in 2018, as a family-run pillar of the Fort Worth community. Today, alongside their daughter McKenzie McClure, the Crows offer a Concierge Stone Experience, a deeply personal journey that treats every client like family and every slab like a masterpiece.

From curating to fabrication, maintenance to restoration, Integrity Stone is a full-service company. As stone curators, the team locates the best quality stone for clients. They also specialize in artisan fabrication of the stone, whether that is a straight, detailed, or uniquely crafted design. Because an important aspect of having natural stone elements is ensuring that the stone is appropriately sealed and maintained, the team also provides education on best practices for stone care as well as maintenance and restoration services.

The versatility of natural stone means it can be used both on the interior and exterior of a home or office for countertops, tabletops, fireplace hearths, bathrooms, as a decorative addition to desks and cabinets, and more. When selecting the best stone for a project, it is important to understand how the surface will be used as well as expectations for upkeep. With that in mind, Integrity Stone offers a Concierge Stone Experience, walking clients through each step of the process.

"We do a deep dive and ask specific questions in order to get a clear vision for the projects.  Selecting stone for a forever home or project can be an emotional experience. We encourage clients to approach the process as if they were choosing a piece of fine art because no two pieces are alike," shares Karen. "We want people to truly love what they choose and understand the functionality of the stone for the area in which it will be utilized. One of the sweetest parts of our job is when the client sees "the one" they want and they know it because they feel something.”

This personal connection is at the heart of their work, whether they are helping a family choose a durable granite or quartzite that can withstand a lifetime of crafts, parties, and holiday traditions or a dream bathroom with the most elegant marble. For many rooms, natural stone becomes the focal point and star of the show, guiding the overall color palette and design, which is why they encourage working with the builder, designer, and/or architect from the beginning stages of the project.

Integrity Stone projects include new builds, remodels, restoration and remodeling of older and historic homes, and outdoor living areas as well as commercial projects. Some of the Crow's favorite projects involve unique, personal touches. "One of our very first jobs was for a family remodeling their home," shares Karen. "The wife wanted to surprise her husband, who attended the Naval Academy, with a hand-carved goat (the Naval Academy mascot) in the center of his office fireplace hearth. To see his face when he realized his wife had thought to ask us to do that was incredible."

Larger projects that incorporate multiple stone slabs, like a conference table Integrity Stone did for Bank 0ZK, present special challenges but also bring big rewards. "The board room conference

table required five slabs," Bobby explains. "The way the veining had to line up required some technical mastery and was very important in the installation, so we had to procure enough slabs to work in consecutive order, ensuring a seamless flow from one end of the table to the other." The finished product is a stunning and unique table.

Integrating lighting and technology into projects adds an elegant touch to using natural stone. "We did a kitchen with a back-lit onyx island,' says Bobby. "Onyx is unique in that, unlike most stones, it's translucent. The perimeter of the kitchen was done in onyx and it wasn't backlit, but they wanted the island to stand out. So, we put a deep mitered edge all around the perimeter of the island and did the backlighting. It's beautiful when the lights are off, but when they are entertaining, they can turn those lights on and it really makes the island pop."

In addition to guiding private homeowners and individual clients, Integrity Stone works with professionals in the design and construction industries, lending their expertise to the process. "We consistently receive comments from designers, builders, and contractors that by us being present during slab selection, we alleviate stress points and potential project delays," shares Karen. "Early collaboration helps streamline the process, ensuring projects run smoothly. We provide immediate insights into the integrity, color, veining, and finish of the slabs, reducing stress and minimizing costly errors. This collaboration enhances customer satisfaction through a high-quality, budget-conscious approach, making the stone fabrication one less worry for contractors while delivering impressive results on time."

While the heart of the business is family, the foundation is rigorous professional excellence. Integrity Stone operates with a commitment to exceed industry standards, drawing from the Natural Stone Institute's (NSI) Dimension Stone Design Manual, the global single-source reference for technical data and installation. Their expertise ensures that technical details like the ASTM test methods for stone durability, or specific measurement tolerances, are handled with precision. For the Crows, the job doesn't end when the stone is set. Following NSI best practices, they provide vital education on

stone care and maintenance. They teach clients why certain stones, like marble, require specific sealers to protect against staining from kitchen staples.

Integrity Stone has several exciting projects underway including working on the amenity areas and luxury residences for Bluejack Ranch, the highly anticipated Tiger Woods-designed golf community southwest of Fort Worth, helping a family restore a home to its original 1800s design, and continuing to work with local nonprofit organizations to provide stone and installation for Homes for Heroes and Opening Doors for Women in Need.

For the Integrity Stone team, the most meaningful part of every day is building relationships with their clients. Having clients return for future projects and refer others to the company is a vital part of the company's growth. "We really appreciate the relationships we have with our clients," says Bobby. "It is very gratifying and we are so blessed when we know we've done a good job because they are referring us to their friends and family."

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.

Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.

“Tackling each space and room as its own story and concept is how to make a new space feel personal,” Manz explains. “But bringing it all together cohesively is always the challenge.”

Her solution? Warmth, intention, and a strong belief in the power of people. In new builds it can take years for a home to shed its newness. For this project, the goal was to fast-track that sense of belonging by layering in pieces with history and heart. Vintage market finds, local artists, and meaningful objects play a starring role throughout the home.

“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”

That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

In large rooms, architectural details like niches, built-ins, or material changes can create visual rhythm while giving meaningful objects a true home.

THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED

The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.

“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”

A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.

Santa and Cole Tekió Light, Vintage Rainer Draumiller Chairs, American Leather custom couch in Bison Butterscotch, Flos Bellhop lamp, BZippy Vase, Plush Moroccan rug

LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings.

Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.

MATERIALS:

Virginia Sin pendant light, In Common With sconce, Arté Oblong wall covering in Ochre, Particular Tile in Vapor, Custom sage velvet sofa, Plush Vintage Moroccan rug

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

When a room serves many purposes, let texture and tone create cohesion. A restrained palette with varied finishes keeps the space flexible and serene.

ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.

Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.

CONTINUED >

MATERIALS:

Luca split stone pavers, Vintage Turkish rug, Plants, Virginia Sin Wall hook

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

An entryway doesn’t need to be loud to be memorable. Combine tactile materials with one or two meaningful elements to create an instant emotional connection.

POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT

If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

MATERIALS:

Particular Tile in Satin Terracotta and Vanilla Bean, Arté Wallcovering Shards in Brick Red, Red travertine sink, Rachel Donath chunky mirror, Playful art work by Olivia Fields

DESIGN TAKEAWAY:

Small spaces are ideal for experimentation. Mix patterns, finishes, and textures within a tight color family to create depth without overwhelm.

PRIMARY BATH PERSPECTIVE:

Restraint is key. A simple, elevated foundation allows for flexibility—style can evolve through art, accessories, and soft textures.

At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.

A Weekend Trip Worth Making

The moment you walk into the Live! Casino & Hotel in Bossier City, LA, along the banks of the Red River, whether you hear the siren song of the casino floor or not, you’ll be taken in by the vibe. With 549 luxurious rooms that range from two queens to a 3,000 square-foot penthouse, four full-service restaurants, a PBR nightclub, live music everywhere you look, a venue that seats up to 1,000 people, and an outdoor space that beckons during the warm Louisiana summer, it’s a chance to get away from it all. “It’s a place for you to come and unwind and get away from all the pressures of the world. As soon as you walk through the door, everything else kind of turns off,” says hotel manager Josh Robinson.

The property opened a year ago, and since then, it’s been a hot spot, entertaining guests from nearly every U.S. state and 12 countries. Groups of all types, including bachelorette and bachelor parties, family reunions, and couples on a weekend getaway, have enjoyed the resort's amenities, incredible food, and amazing entertainment.

You’ll find live music in the PBR Cowboy Bar every weekend, and karaoke on Thursdays. You might hear an acoustic band in The Prime Rib, the resort’s premier steakhouse. You might find a DJ in the R Bar, and there’s a stage at Sports & Social that often plays host to bands. The real experience?

Seeing a live act at Live! Event Center. It’s part of the property, so guests can go directly from dinner to a show to see performers like Trace Adkins, the Eli Young Band, comedian Morgan Jay, and more. “It's an intimate entertainment experience, versus some of the larger venues or arenas, where you really get kind of a personal feel. It's a really great space for a show,” says Robinson.

If you’re a foodie, you know the cuisine in Louisiana just hits different, and the full-service restaurants at Live! lives up to that hype. If you

prefer fine dining, The Prime Rib offers, of course, prime rib, but also steak and seafood. It’s one of Robinson’s favorite spots, and he says if you ask the chef to prepare your prime rib “seasoned and seared,” it takes the meal to a different level.

Then there’s Sports & Social, where you’ll find massive LED TVs showcasing sports games of all types, along with the type of pub food that makes you want to dig in: nachos, quesadillas, a to-diefor smashburger, and, because this is Louisiana, a killer red beans and rice dish, and fried catfish.

If you’re craving an Asian-inspired meal, Luk Fu is where you’ll find pho that’s out of this world, as well as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese menu options. Ridotto Grand Cafe is where you should go for the ultimate carb-loading experience. Dine on pasta, chicken parmesan, and pizza that Robinson raves about. “I've worked here since we opened, and I still think about it when I go home every day. The things that our pizza chef can do with that oven are pretty remarkable,” he says.

There’s also the R Bar at Ridotto, located just off the main restaurant, that offers small bites throughout the week, but really serves up an incredible ambiance. It has a library with a fireplace that invites guests to lounge with a book and truly relax.

If you’re visiting Live! Casino & Hotel between Memorial Day through Labor Day, it’ll be hard to drag yourself from the outdoor pool area. There’s oftentimes a DJ playing, plus plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas so you can spend a day in the sun. And if you want to explore beyond the hotel, there are a ton of things to do in both the Shreveport and the Northeast Louisiana area.

Live! Casino & Hotel is near the Shreveport Aquarium and the Sci-Port Discovery Center, plus the Brookshire Grocery Arena that hosts other live

entertainment, as well as The Strand Theater, which is a must if you love musicals. If you want a bar scene, the Red River District in downtown Shreveport is a short ride-share away. There are festivals for every interest, and Robinson says the Red River Revel, one of the largest regional arts festivals in the country, is not to be missed.

If you love to be on the water, there are marinas with water rentals along the Red River, the closest of which is around two minutes from the hotel. There’s also an incredible lake system, including Cross Lake, Caddo Lake, and Cypress Bayou, all about 15 minutes away from Live!, and according to Robinson, this is where the real water action happens.

Live! Casino & Hotel Louisiana is just over three hours away from Fort Worth, making it the perfect weekend getaway destination. Whether you love the thrill of cards or slots, or just want to enjoy your loved ones while enjoying world-class dining and entertainment, this spot should be on your road trip bucket list.

Building grand homes inspired by European palaces, they created one of the world’s most famous resort towns. Commissioned to design over 2,000 projects during his sixty years of practice, John Volk’s legacy as one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach, can now be seen on almost every street.

THE RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE OF D. STANLEY DIXON

Atlanta-based architect Stan Dixon has received tremendous media attention since the founding of his firm D. Stanley Dixon Architect, Inc. in 2006. His highly-anticipated debut book showcases thirteen projects from across the country. From a relaxed Jupiter Island coastal retreat to an elegant English-manor-inspired South Carolina home, each project varies geographically and stylistically, highlighting a variety of different aesthetic components.

Our Way Home:

REIMAGINING AN AMERICAN FARMHOUSE

The defined style of cozy and simple living has led to a rise in American farmhouse design in recent years. Interior designer Heide Hendricks and architect-builder Rafe Churchill show how they have brought twenty-first-century living to their late nineteenth-century New England farmhouse. This husband-and-wife team combined their talents to create a historic home that is both a personal retreat designed for everyday life and a constant source of inspiration for their other projects.

Cooking With Fresh Herbs

BY JANIE JONES

Garlic Herb Butter

This butter is versatile and goes with just about anything. You can use this on top of bread, popcorn, veggies, as a sandwich spread and more.

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

• 4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

• 1 tablespoon herb of your choice (dill, basil or oregano are my go-to herbs.)

• 1 clove garlic, chopped

• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• cracked pepper to taste

Process

Add all ingredients in a food processor (or mix by hand in a bowl). Transfer butter mixture on parchment paper or plastic wrap. Cover butter tightly and roll into a log. Place in refrigerator until firm. Enjoy!

Add a little kick to your traditional popcorn by incorporating herbs in with the butter. You won’t be disappointed with this buttery and savory combination.

Ingredients

• 13 tablespoons coconut oil (or olive oil if you prefer)

• 3/4 cup popcorn kernels

• 5 tablespoons butter, melted

• 2 teaspoons garlic salt

• 2 teaspoons parsley (dried)

• 1 teaspoon thyme

Process

Add oil to the bottom of a pot and melt over medium heat. Add popcorn kernels and place lid on top of the pot and heat over medium heat until kernels are popped, shaking pan occasionally. Melt butter in a separate dish and add seasonings. Pour on top, and enjoy!

Herbed Popcorn

Herb Salt

Herb salts are becoming so popular and can add flavor to a variety of dishes. There are endless flavor combinations, and these salts are so handy to have as a staple in the kitchen. Plus, these make great gifts for family and friends. All you need is a blender or food processor and minimal ingredients.

• 1 tablespoon lemon zest

• 1 garlic clove minced

• Optional: Any additional herbs you prefer

Process

Add fresh parsley, garlic, lemon zest and a little bit of salt to the blender or food processor. Mix for 10 seconds. Add additional ingredients and blend again. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and pour salt mixture on sheet and evening spread. Set in a cool oven overnight to dry. Pour salt into a container of choice and enjoy!

VANILLA CHIFFON SPONGE

All ingredients should be at room temperature before proceeding.

• 85g egg yolks

• 34g sugar (1)

• 34g neutral oil

• 45g milk

• 1 tsp elderflower cordial/syrup

• 86g all-purpose flour

• 1g salt

• 138g egg whites

• 60g sugar (2)

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and prepare 2 5 or 6-inch round cake pans by lining the bottom with parchment paper. Note: Do NOT spray the sides of the cake pan.

2. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar (1), oil, milk, and elderflower cordial until smooth and pale.

3. Sift in the flour and fold until just combined.

4. In another bowl, you are going to make a meringue. Whip the egg whites to soft peaks, gradually adding sugar (2) until medium peaks form.

5. Fold the meringue into the yolk mixture in three additions, being careful not to deflate the batter.

6. Pour the batter evenly between the 2 pans and tap lightly to release any large air bubbles.

7. Bake for about 30 minutes, until golden and springy to the touch. Immediately invert on a wire rack to cool completely.

8. Once cool, run a knife through the edge to release the cake.

GOOSEBERRY COMPOTE

Gooseberries have a high level of pectin which helps create a thick, gel-like consistency.

• 400g gooseberries (fresh or frozen)

• 100g sugar (adjust to taste, tart berries may need additional sugar)

• 30ml water or apple juice (optional - mostly needed with using fresh berries)

• 1 tsp lemon juice

• 1 tsp vanilla

1. Place gooseberries, sugar, and optional liquid, in a saucepan.

2. Cook over medium-low heat until berries release juice and start to break down.

3. Stir in lemon juice and vanilla.

4. Blend the filling for a smooth finish.

5. Transfer to a bowl and let cool to room temp.

6. Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming.

SWISS MERINGUE BUTTERCREAM

All ingredients should be at room temperature before proceeding.

• 150g egg whites

• 250g granulated sugar

• 450g unsalted butter, cut into large cubes

• 2 tsp elderflower cordial/syrup

• 1/2 tsp salt

1. Place egg whites and sugar in a heatproof bowl. Set over a saucepan (or bain-marie) of gently simmering water. Whisk constantly until the sugar is fully dissolved. I run the mixture between two fingers to test the mixture to ensure everything is dissolved--this should be smooth with no gritty texture.

2. Strain mixture through a sieve into a mixer bowl to remove any possible egg lumps.

3. Add your salt and whip on high speed until the bowl feels cool to the touch. You should have stiff, glossy peaks.

4. Reduce speed to medium and add butter a few cubes at a time. Allowing each piece to incorporate before adding the next. It may look curdled--keep mixing.

5. Once the mixture has come together, add your vanilla. Finish on low speed for 2 minutes to remove air bubbles. You can swap out the whip for a beater to remove even more air bubbles, but not necessary.

ASSEMBLE THE CAKE

Trim the top of the cake to an even height. Halve each cake horizontally to make four layers. Spread a generous layer of compote and and several dollops of buttercream between each sponge layer. Finish by spreading the buttercream over the top and sides of the cake, smoothing to finish. Best served at room temperature.

Optional: mix in a little gooseberry compote into the buttercream and use this in between the layers.

HOME IS WHERE YOU MAKE IT!

FINDING HOME IN UNFAMILIAR PLACES

For eighteen years, California was the only place I called home. But the moment I packed my purple Honda Civic with everything I owned and drove off to college, my definition of home shifted. Suddenly, home wasn’t a single address—it became something more fluid. Home started to mean wherever I was planted.

One of the biggest moves I made came when I was accepted into a graduate program at Texas Christian University. I moved my entire life from Idaho, where I had just finished my undergraduate degree, to Fort Worth, Texas. I went from being a short

drive away from family to being separated by flights and time zones. I had no friends, no family nearby, and no real sense of what Texas would hold. Once again, I packed up my car—this time with my dog—and drove more than thirty hours south. Although I had lived in multiple states by then, Texas made me feel like a fish out of water. The idea of planting roots there, even temporarily, felt daunting.

Having lived in six states over the past decade, I’ve learned that home isn’t something you stumble upon. It’s something you build, again and again.

Below are a few lessons I’ve picked up along the way—experiences that taught me

how to make any place feel like home, even when it’s only for a season.

FEELING GROUNDED EVEN WHEN IT’S TEMPORARY

In 2021, my husband and I left Fort Worth with everything we owned in a U-Haul, and moved to New York City so he could finish law school. I will never forget the moment we drove onto the George Washington Bridge and saw the city skyline. I felt excited, nervous, and everything in between. We double-parked the truck on the street and unloaded our things in a blur of chaos and adrenaline.

New York was the first place where I truly felt like I was starting from scratch.

“I WENT FROM BEING A SHORT DRIVE AWAY FROM FAMILY TO BEING SEPARATED BY FLIGHTS AND TIME ZONES. I HAD NO FRIENDS, NO FAMILY NEARBY, AND NO REAL SENSE OF WHAT TEXAS WOULD HOLD.”

I wasn’t in school anymore, so there were no built-in friendships through classes. I was working remotely due to the pandemic, which meant no coworkers to casually connect with, either. I didn’t know a single person in the city.

So I made myself a promise: I would be intentional. I would push myself beyond my comfort zone and actively work to make Manhattan feel like home, even if it was temporary.

I committed to showing up—to neighborhoods, routines, and experiences that once felt unfamiliar.

FINDING COMMUNITY AND PEOPLE IN YOUR CORNER

In a city where you’re constantly surrounded by people, it’s surprisingly easy to feel invisible. I knew that if New York was going to feel like home, I had to find my people.

I joined various workout studios, making an effort to talk to people in the class. I hung out in coffee shops, making friends

with the baristas and other people who were working remote jobs in the city. We went to theatre performances and bonded with other people about the sheer talent and delight of the entire experience.

Even though our time in New York was short, the community I found there grounded me. Those connections made the city feel like a meaningful chapter in our story—not just a stop along the way, but a place that will always belong to us.

MAKE YOUR SPACE A PLACE YOU WANT TO BE

Whether you’re snowed in, avoiding unbearable heat, or stuck inside with the flu, home should feel like a refuge. Even if it’s temporary, it should be a place you want to return to.

We had almost no furniture when we lived in New York because we knew we would be leaving after the school year was over. We bought the world’s cheapest, most uncomfortable couch, just so we could sit together and watch the TV that sat on top of its box. The space was small and imperfect, but it was ours. It was where we shared meals, laughed at movies, and reconnected at the end of long days.

We also created meaningful traditions along the way. We walked sixteen blocks to buy pumpkins to carve for Halloween. We cooked our first Thanksgiving meal together in our tiny apartment, using whatever ingredients we could find nearby. That year, we bought our first Christmas tree—barely two feet tall—and placed presents beneath its colorful lights.

Those small rituals mattered. They turned an apartment into a home.

THE MOMENTS THAT MAKE A PLACE LAST

Although New York was home for only a year, the memories we made there remain some of my favorites. It wasn’t about how long we stayed—it was about how intentionally we lived while we were there.

My husband proposed to me along the Hudson River, a place we visited often to watch the sunset. It’s a reminder that the smallest, most ordinary moments can become life’s biggest milestones.

After going from living in Manhattan, to Pocatello, to finally ending up in Dallas, I can honestly say, that each spot we’ve lived in has been home for us, and it’s because of the amount of effort we put into planting roots wherever we are.

There’s something grounding about learning the rhythm of a city—finding your regular coffee order, your favorite walking routes, the places you return to without thinking. In Dallas, those routines came naturally. Slowly, the city stopped feeling new and started feeling familiar.

We are now situated in Uptown Dallas with a proper apartment, a house filled with pictures from all of our travels, and things we’ve collected along the way. Dallas is the longest place we’ve lived since being married, and currently the place we call home. We often visit Fort Worth as it’s where our Texas story began and it will always have a special place in our hearts.

No matter what season you’re in—building a house, renting an apartment, or sharing space with roommates—there are always ways to ground yourself and make it your own. Home is made in the in-between—in borrowed spaces, short chapters, and the moments we decide to make them ours.

Date Night

AT HOME

THREE CREATIVE IDEAS TO CELEBRATE LOVE

Not every date night needs to involve reservations or an elaborate itinerary. With a little creativity, you can create magical moments right at home. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or just want to reconnect, here are three ideas for unforgettable at-home date nights.

ROMANTIC PICNIC UNDER THE STARS

Transform your backyard or balcony into a dreamy picnic spot! Spread out a cozy blanket, add a few fluffy pillows, and hang string lights or fairy lights for ambiance. A small fire pit or lanterns can also add a romantic glow.

Pack a picnic basket with finger foods and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Don’t forget a decadent dessert like chocolate-dipped strawberries. Lay back and stargaze, identifying constellations or making wishes on shooting stars. To make it extra romantic, bring a bluetooth speaker and play soft music.

BREAKFAST IN BED

Start the day with love by turning breakfast into an indulgent experience. Prepare a tray with a DIY breakfast charcuterie board. Include mini pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bacon, and pastries. Add small bowls of toppings like syrup, Nutella, or whipped cream.

Mix up mimosas or serve coffee with flavored syrups and whipped cream for a café vibe. Then, snuggle up in bed and watch a favorite movie or TV series.

PAINT AND CREATE TOGETHER

Unleash your inner artists with one of these three fun and interactive dates. Grab some inexpensive canvases, brushes, and acrylic paints from the craft store. Don’t forget aprons or old clothes to protect against spills!

• Paint each other’s portraits for a mix of laughter and creativity.

• Work on a collaborative painting - each person adds their own touch to a single canvas.

• Try a themed painting challenge, like recreating your favorite memory together.

Pair this date with a cheese platter and wine and don’t worry about being “good’ at paintingit’s all about enjoying the process together.
