July 2025 PUBLISHER

Hunter Martinez | hunter.martinez@citylifestyle.com

There’s something special about setting out on a new adventure—even if it’s just across town. Here in Fort Worth, there’s no shortage of places to explore. From the winding paths of the Trinity Trails to the roar of lions at the Fort Worth Zoo… from dusty boot shops in the Stockyards to hands-on fun at the Science Museum—every outing holds the promise of something new. And just beyond our city limits? Even more wide-open spaces, roadside diners, and small-town charm waiting to be discovered. But here’s what I’ve come to realize: it’s not really about where you go—it’s about who you go with. Whether you’re piling into the car for a trip or spending an afternoon at your favorite neighborhood park, the laughter, conversations, and memories made with the people you love are what truly make the experience rich. A walk becomes an adventure. A simple meal turns into a moment. A quiet drive transforms into time well spent. So this season, let’s chase sunsets, find hidden gems, and rediscover the places right under our nose. But most of all, let’s do it together. Because the best part of the journey is who you share it with.

SPEAKEASYS ABOUND IN COWTOWN; HERE’S WHERE TO FIND THEM.

ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN

Passwords, secret doors, low lights, music, the hum of conversation— all part of the allure of a Prohibition Era-inspired speakeasy. What was once hidden in plain sight is now a nightlife trend that has made its way back into the limelight. Fort Worth is rich in history and culture, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s also home to several speakeasys. For those looking to be transported to a time when liquor wasn’t legal, but still flowed freely, these under-the-radar spots are the perfect escape. While some embrace the nostalgic vibe of the ‘20s and the Prohibition era, others sport a modern vibe that’s just as fun. One thing that remains consistent at each of these spots is that they promise incredible cocktails, great service, and an unforgettable experience. From a historic building in Hell’s Half-Acre to a laid-back spot in the cultural district, here’s where to enter a place that, from the outside, isn’t quite what it seems. CONTINUED >

This four-story cocktail lounge, cigar bar, and speakeasy is in the historic Vybek building in Hell’s Half Acre, an infamous neighborhood in downtown Fort Worth. Enter the street-level “bookstore” bar and enter the speakeasy via a hidden door and password, of course. In the basement, you’ll find a space steeped in history and an ambiance that’s both mysterious and inviting. It’s the perfect spot to grab a drink after dinner or before a performance at Bass Hall. thompsons-bookstore.com

THE AMBER ROOM

Tucked away in Wishbone & Flynt, gain access to The Amber Room through a mysterious gold door with over 20 knobs near the bar or the unmarked wooden door outside. Inspired by Old English and Moroccan interiors, the exposed brick walls, rich fabrics, vintage couches, and carefully curated decor will transport you to the Prohibition era. Known for their upscale whiskey-based craft drinks like Aztec Old Fashioned and the Scarlett Letter, The Amber Room is an inviting place to enjoy drinks and small plates without the bustle of a larger restaurant scene. wishboneandflynt.com/the-amber-room

BROKEN BOW HAS A MOUNTAIN VIBE WITHOUT THE DRIVE It’s a year-round playground close to home.

R OA D T R IP | TRAVEL

Southeast Oklahoma is three hours away from DFW, yet it feels like an entirely different world. The piney forests are at the foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains and the Ouachita National Forest, and for those who love the great outdoors, it’s the ultimate playground. Broken Bow, OK, has long been a destination for North Texans; you can get away from the daily grind without the hassle of a long drive or flight. The popular vacation destination that includes Broken Bow, Hochatown, Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow Lake, and Mountain Fork River has been calling to families and outdoor enthusiasts for decades, and there’s no sign of slowing down. We spoke with a longtime visitor and homeowner whose love for the area led her to build a cabin in 2022, both as a retreat for her family and a welcoming haven for guests. Tucked away in a beautiful hilltop landscape, “Mi Vida Loca” is located in a small waterfront resort community filled with numerous resort amenities. This modern-style luxury cabin is filled with vibrant color inspired by Mexican culture and art, CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/WE STF O RT WO RT H

“Each season has unique features, and even in July when the temperatures are the hottest, that’s when you get on the lake and in the river. I just feel like it is an all-season venue, and there are just so many special, unique themes that are attached to whatever the season is.” and includes thoughtful details that families will appreciate. The owner is a psychotherapist and counselor, and after 40 years in the business, she can see how busy lifestyles affect relationships for couples and children. “I poured everything I could into this cabin to create a space where our family and other families could go and reconnect with each other and nature. So there are a lot of little special touches and features that I have added to help with family connections,” she says. Mi Vida Loca was designed with an open floor plan. Guests can prep a meal in the kitchen while others play a game in the dining room, while the kids enjoy the loft area, and it’ll feel like everyone is still together. CONTINUED >

The cabin is filled with playful things like conversation cards, a hidden library filled with books, games, and bean bags for kids, a third floor crow’s nest lookout, a laser night sky show in the kids’ room, a deck with an outdoor fireplace, a hot tub, TV, shuffleboard, outdoor swings, corkscrew slide, and Tee Pees, all of which make it the perfect place to hang out after a day hiking, kayaking, playing on the lake or enjoying any of the other activities Broken Bow has to offer. Just a short walk from the cabin, the neighborhood clubhouse has a resort swimming pool, kiddie pool, hot tub, stocked fishing ponds with waterfalls, walking trails, snack bar, and even a kitchen—yet another aspect that’ll appeal to guests wanting a long weekend or week away to reconnect.

36

R OA D T R IP | TRAVEL

Deciding how to spend your time in Broken Bow is no easy feat. There are so many things to do, everything from a drive-through safari, petting zoo, and mining for gems to zip lining, water sports, hiking, Tiki boat tours, and several engaging museums, like the Forest Heritage Center, for guests of all ages. The owners of Mi Vida Loca love and appreciate the area and provide an extensive directory on their website with the area’s activities and restaurants so you can decide what to do on your getaway. If you aren’t in the mood to cook at home, there are plenty of restaurants to try. Pressa Italia serves up classic pasta dishes with gluten-free options, as well as pizzas. La Cocina De Maria has the best street tacos in the area, and Brick and Bread offers made-from-scratch soups, salads, and sandwiches. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, stop by Loblolly Chocolates for fudge, truffles, cookies, and more. When’s the best time to visit Broken Bow? According to the owner of Mi Vida Loca, anytime is a good time. “Honestly, I love every season. This part of Oklahoma has four seasons, so going hiking in the fall is incredible with all the leaves changing, but it’s beautiful in the spring because you have the dogwood trees. Each season has unique features, and even in July when the temperatures are the hottest, that’s when you get on the lake and in the river. I just feel like it is an all-season venue, and there are just so many special, unique themes that are attached to whatever the season is,” she says. ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MACKA PHOTOGRAPHY

“Look for someone who asks questions, listens, takes notes, and provides a plan.”

40

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | P ROF E SSION AL SE RVICE S

For t Wor th P hotographer Believe s in t he Power of a S t or y Brooke Macko believes everyone’s story matters.

Brooke Macko of Macka Photography is known for two distinct styles: fresh, true-to-color images and moody photography with layers of shadow and light. As a frequent contributor to West Fort Worth Lifestyle magazine and working with families and businesses, her specialization in portraits, artist profiles, and branding visuals is a familiar sight. We had a chance to sit down with Brooke and learn about her passion for the craft, why taking the photo is so important, and get a few helpful tips for hiring a photographer.

1. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR HIRING A PHOTOGRAPHER?

I recommend seeking out a prepared, organized photographer who has a caring attitude. Look for someone who asks questions, listens, takes notes, and provides a plan. I like to call this “being seen and heard.” The Macka Photography process has a plan for each client: sometimes, after a short phone call, a two-sentence plan for a 15-minute headshot session and photography tips is all that is needed. Other times, it’s a multi-page photography shoot guide based on several conversations. Either way, a clear plan with straightforward cost

and deliverables is filled with evidence that a client has been seen and heard. Hiring a photographer with these traits will set you on the right path to achieve the desired results and experience.

2. WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

Pay attention to details. Everything from clean shoes to eliminating wrinkles, possibly professional makeup and hair. Don’t be afraid to talk to your photographer about what you don’t like before your session. This narrows down the focus of the shoot and directs time to images the client desires. Hire a photographer you trust. When mutual trust is shared, the results are always elevated because both parties are open to advice and ideas.

3. I CAN SEE THE PASSION FOR CREATIVES AND BUSINESSES IN YOUR WORK. FROM WHERE DID IT ORIGINATE?

Growing up, I was that kid who woke up super early on Saturday morning to watch documentaries and kept a notebook of interesting words I came across while reading.

Being drawn to stories and expression has always been a part of me. When I became a professional photographer, I realized that wonder and curiosity were commonalities through all my interests. The camera became an interesting way to communicate and permission to explore—almost like receiving an airplane ticket in the morning to a new destination where I can discover details, histories, moods, people, beauty, and so on. This easily translates to working with clients, developing a passion to learn about them, their art, their business, and what is important to them. I believe that everyone’s story matters. I am so grateful to God that my career encourages questions, thinking, problem solving, technology, art, and storytelling. I get to be in the middle of that AND help others. I am also grateful for the impact that photography had on my personal life, and that emboldens me to keep pushing forward with the craft.

4. YOU WORK OFTEN WITH BUSINESSES, ARTISTS, AND FAMILIES. BUT DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL PROJECTS RIGHT NOW?

Yes, I am thrilled to have recently joined Artly International’s curated platform, committed to offering high-quality contemporary art. My fine art photography prints can be found at artlyinternational. com/collections/brooke-macko

5. TELL ME A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.

I love a good walk and lifting weights. I’m always reading or listening to books on Libby. I can’t help but be creative and analytical at the same time. Perhaps that is why I am a little bit quirky. My family is precious to me; my son and I like to listen to music together. How he came to like yacht rock is beyond me, but it’s a blast to ride in the car with him. If you ever meet my husband, ask him about the time he brought a church pew to a photography shoot at the beginning of my career. I’m so grateful for the encouragement from amazing friends and clients.

6. WHAT DOES A MACKA PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO FEEL LIKE?

Confidence from knowing you have an impactful, relevant image. A real smile from a flood of sweet memories. Hello, album cover! Inspired. Thinking, “This is my boutique! This is our fitness studio! I can’t wait to use this image. I should have done this sooner.”

7. WHY TAKE THE PHOTOGRAPH?

It’s satisfying to see a client’s smile and excitement on gallery delivery day, knowing that they pushed through all the reasons not to schedule and went for it. They work hard to fit it into their busy lives and look past any concerns about how they look. My job as a photographer is not just to provide high-quality, impactful images—it’s to be an advocate for their present and their future legacy. If my client is encouraged and inspired by the experience and photographs, then I know that I have truly delivered.

UNPLUG & HAVE FUN! ARTICLE BY PAM REID | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Summertime is the best time for kids to disconnect and enjoy being outdoors.

Long, long ago, in a time before technology, children entertained themselves and played endlessly with nothing more than ... wait for it ... their imagination. They played outdoors for hours with friends, balls, jump ropes, buckets, chalk, bicycles, you name it! The level of creativity saw no limits in the minds of these children. While some families have plans for getaway vacations, there are those planning to stay home and scrambling for things their children can do. We’d like to share some ideas that don’t include technology or cost a boat load of money for that matter. The benefits of spending time outdoors and unplugged outweigh complaints about temperature or those annoying creepy crawlers. The added bonus is that many outdoor games secretly teach life skills. Technology is used only to confirm game rules. Ready or not, it’s time to play! A day - or two or three - full of outdoor games will invoke a trip down memory lane for some adults, or a “this is great” thought for others. In either case, playing these games has tremendous benefits - young people can fully embrace human connection, get a break from the instant gratification associated with technical devices and social media, and enjoy some good wholesome, age-appropriate fun. Many adults admit they played many of their favorite childhood games well into their teen years, and still others say they relish in a good game of dodgeball or tug of war today. This list is not all-inclusive, but it certainly gets the games started!

“READY OR NOT, IT’S TIME TO PLAY!” 46

FAM ILY CA R E | ENTERTAIN ME N T

CHILDHOOD GAMES TUG OF WAR - contest between two teams at opposite ends of a rope; each team trying to drag the other across a center line.

SACK RACE - stand in your sack, hold on to the top of your sack and hop as fast as you can to the finish line!

FREEZE TAG - each player freezes when tagged and can be unfrozen only by a player who is not yet frozen. Game ends when all players are frozen.

RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT - shout “green light” and all players run towards you, shout “yellow light” and they are allowed to walk, but when “red light” is shouted, they must stop and freeze. If player moves at “red light”, they go back to start line.

MUSICAL CHAIRS - walk to music around a group of chairs containing one chair fewer than number of players, and rush to sit down when music stops. The player left standing in each round is eliminated.

KICK THE CAN - find players in their hiding spots and put them in “jail”. Once a player is “jailed” the only way to be freed is for another player to beat the “IT” person to the can and kick it.

DODGEBALL - team sport in which players on two teams try to throw balls and hit opponents, while avoid being hit themselves. Consider water balloons instead of balls on a hot day.

There are more great outdoor games. Get unplugged and get outside!

This year, Archie’s Gardenland continues celebrating 90 years of serving area gardeners who include seasoned veterans to those newly introduced to the joy of gardening and everyone in between. Randall Archie, the fourth generation of his family to operate the nursery and garden center, continues the legacy by working alongside his father and aunt while passing the tradition on to the fifth generation. “I practically grew up here running around the nursery, learning how to propagate plants and take care of all landscape materials,” says Randall. “It’s more than a job; it has kind of grown into who I am over time.” The ongoing and seasonal nature of gardening means the Archie’s Gardenland team builds relationships as they often see repeat customers. These frequent interactions, combined with the multi-generational aspect of the business, motivate Randall and his team to continue to cultivate the best experience for customers by improving efficiency and creating an enjoyable and helpful environment. “It's fun getting to help people from start to finish with a project, and then they come back later and tell you of the successes from their planting. Or they might have some struggles, and we work through things mutually to figure out what's going on,” he says. “There is a big connection to our customer base, and it's pretty fun getting to watch someone light up when they tell you about the plants that you help them select and how they're growing.” Archie’s Gardenland has eight retail greenhouses for customers to explore that offer everything from small seasonal plants to 100-gallon shade trees and everything in between. Plant

varieties range from ornamentals to edible plants such as vegetables, fruit trees, fruiting vines, and herbs. The garden center is also stocked with a full plant health selection to address the variety of struggles and stress plants face under challenging Texas weather conditions. The size of the nursery ensures that even during peak business days, customers still feel the calming and relaxing nature of exploring the property which in addition to housing thousands of plants, has a curated selection of pottery, fountains, yard art, and patio décor to browse. With so many options, the team at Archie’s is happy to guide customers as they make decisions and provide educational support through the gardening process. “It's important for us to relay that gardening is not as intimidating as it seems,” explains Randall. “Some look at gardening as an overwhelming project, but we want to help people discover that gardening can be fun because there are many ways to go about proper steps to having a successful garden and landscaping your home.” For couples, Archie’s Gardenland provides the perfect setting for a nontraditional date. In addition to hosting special events such as Music in the Garden and Greenhouse dinners, the greenhouses give off a botanical garden vibe perfect for strolling and admiring the colors and foliage of many different types of plants. Some visitors come to soak in the ambiance, but many couples also enjoy the process of choosing a houseplant together to take home and nurture. “When you are sharing that decision and taking home a plant to take care of, it's a pretty connected experience,” says Randall. “You're not just paying for dinner and then you're done. You have this plant that you get to take care of for multiple seasons and there are memories attached to it.” Couples can browse the greenhouses, then take a break and share a meal at the café while they contemplate what they would like to take home. The Gardenland Café, which is now run completely in-house, features a rotating seasonal menu with locally grown produce. Dishes are created with an emphasis on being healthy and fresh. Diners will also appreciate the vibrant atmosphere of the fully landscaped patio that sits comfortably beneath a canopy of shade trees. “My granddad was a very big home chef and he always wanted to have food here as an option,” shares Randall. “So it's pretty neat to finally get that into rotation and we're really excited to have some dishes in his name.” The nursery boasts endless photo opportunities with an array of colors and textures as backgrounds and the greenhouses provide an unexpected refuge during inclement weather. “On a normal rainy day when retail is a little bit slower, couples take advantage of it to walk through the greenhouse together. The ambience in the greenhouses on a rainy day is hard to beat,” shares Randall. “And I've seen a lot of couples taking advantage of our really cute photo options and highlighting some of our spots that look like you're lost in a garden center.” Stop by and explore Archie’s Gardenland, located at 6700 Z Boaz Place in Fort Worth. Fort Worth Public Library’s newest guide to exploring the Unexpected City

R E K

ARTICLE BY SUZIE BREWER

The Fort Worth Fun Tracker was launched to offer a year-round program to inspire, inform and entertain people of all ages. Started by the Library’s Life Long Learning Team, the goal is to highlight the kinds of things the modern Fort Worth Public Library offers the community. The Fort Worth Fun Tracker encourages residents to experience the city in a new way!

THINGS TO KNOW:

1. The Fort Worth Fun Tracker is easily accessible through the Beanstack app or website. By signing up with an email, users can view monthly activities, review books they've recently read, and receive book recommendations—all for free! It's perfect for anyone on-the-go who wants to make lasting memories while exploring all that Fort Worth has to offer. CONTINUED >

The Fort Worth Fun Tracker encourages residents to experience the city in a new way!

2. Each season, the Fun Tracker is updated with a fresh lineup of curated seasonal activities unique to Fort Worth. From floriography events to cultural cuisine restaurants to outdoor gardening events, there's always something new to discover through the free guide. The Fun Tracker helps you stay in the know and make the most of every season! 3. All ages are welcome to join! Both adults and children can easily register on the Beanstack platform, where they’ll receive activity recommendations personalized to their age group. Whether you're seeking fun, educational opportunities, or ways to explore the city, Beanstack provides a wide range of activities to suit the interests and needs of everyone in the family. 4. Every participant can pick up a free Fort Worth Fun Tracker souvenir booklet at any Fort Worth Public Library location. Each library offers a unique stamp, allowing kids (and adults) to track the activities they have completed and the libraries they have visited. It's a fun way to explore the city while keeping a personal record of your adventures. 5. There are incentives along the way: monthly, seasonally, and yearly! Reaching 20 points each month earns a completion stamp and reaching 50 points each season earns a season completion sticker for your Fun Tracker souvenir booklet. At the end of the year, every badge earned will be an entry in a city-wide drawing to win a bicycle. 6. The Fun Tracker is an excellent educational tool, especially for kids during the summer months. Many activities are themed; events across the Dallas-Fort Worth area paired with a curated lists of books, articles, and age-appropriate films. These resources are designed to enhance understanding of various monthly themes, holidays, and celebrations, offering a wellrounded educational experience for all participants. 7. Some activities listed on the Fun Tracker are repeatable, rather than a one-time event. Each month, the Fort Worth Public Library offers computer and language classes, craft and art programs, and clubs to stretch imagination. Users earn points each time they attend one of these programs! Users can also earn points for each e-book checked out through Libby! 8. The Fort Worth Fun Tracker is only one aspect of what the Fort Worth Public Library offers. Other resources to check out include a large collection of books and materials, video games, backyard game kits, musical instruments and so much more. Over 20 locations serve as neighborhood hubs to bring residents together, offering a host of activities
