LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness

January 2025 PUBLISHER

Hunter Martinez | hunter.martinez@citylifestyle.com

Health and wellness are pursuits we strive for daily, but as the year begins, they seem to take center stage in our minds. New diets, exercise routines, reading regimens, etc.—we set ambitious goals for the next 12 months. Reflecting on my track record with New Year’s resolutions, I ask myself: Why do I fail so often? Are my goals unattainable? Do they lack significance? Or, like many, do I opt for the path of least resistance? Likely, it’s a mix of all these. This year, I’ve resolved that things will be different. This will be the year everything changes. But then, wasn’t that my mantra last year? To truly succeed, I need a new system—one built on accountability. I firmly believe we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with. This realization prompts me to examine those around me. Even more unsettling is the question: If someone counts me among their five, what example am I setting? This thought weighs heavily, especially when I consider my children. If my boys mirror the habits and values of the five closest people in their lives, and I top their list, what will they learn? For me, this is a profound and sobering question that builds in more accountability than anything else. When people told me having kids would change me, I didn’t expect it to manifest in this way. Being a better example for them has become the strongest driver of change in my life. It turns out I am willing to do far more for those I love than I would ever do for myself. When I think about what I want for my sons, it simplifies things and brings life into perspective quickly. It’s not fame or fortune I wish for them, but a foundation of beliefs, morals, and habits that foster success. If I want them to love God, care for others, and strive to do right no matter the challenges, then I must embody those values myself. These three things may be a gross oversimplification of life, but maybe not. Many profess their love by claiming they would die for someone. Perhaps the truest expression of love is choosing to live for them instead. I am making this my New Year’s resolution and I hope it inspires others to focus on what is truly important this year…… others.

HERE, LIFE MEANS MORE.

At MRC Stevenson Oaks, our philosophy is that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. We fight back on thieves like loneliness, helplessness and boredom. We resolve to make every day one that confirms the seven domains of well-being through identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy. “We’re busier now than we ever were. Our children call and they can’t get us and they wonder where we are now. And I have to reply: we were at bingo, we were at lunch, we were at dinner, now we are going down to trivia. It’s endless, what you can find to do. It’s just one fun-filled, lifetime vacation.” - STEVENSON OAKS RESIDENTS, RON & JOYCE STULTS

GLAMPING RESORT ON THE SAN MARCOS RIVER HAS SOME THING FOR EVERYONE ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN Just 15 miles from San Marcos and only 12 miles away from barbeque mecca Lockhart lies 102 acres of land along a flowing, spring-fed river. Once on the property,

that gives you all the glory of the Texas countryside but with modern-day amenities, the Wahwahtaysee Resort will be a dream come true. Owned and operated by the Dillard family—father Robert and sons Sammy and Donny—Wahwahtaysee opened in April 2018 with just three safari tents; today there are seven tents and three converted container cabins available for rent. was open land is now a haven for anyone who wants to escape the daily grind but not give up a home-like space. “It’s very comforting to get that outdoor camping experience but at the same time have all these wonderful luxury amenities that you’ll have back in the cities as well,” says Donny. The Dillards have built the resort from the ground up. Each unit is like a glamorous little house: everything is on grid power, they have central air and heating, hardwood floors, designer tile, soaking tubs, indoor showers, full kitchens, quality mattresses and linens, sturdy decks, and more. “These are designed to a tee. We buy the actual framing in the canvas, build a deck, go inside, and frame the tent with two-by-fours, real windows, and real doors. The tents are about 750 square feet, and the containers are about 320 square feet, and they’re what you would expect from a high-quality resort,” says Sammy. A high-quality resort it is, indeed. Along with the luxe accommodations, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the

beautiful property all year. The heated pool and hot tub opened last summer, and the Dillards have developed almost a dozen beaches along the San Marcos River, all ideally placed to ensure privacy for guests. It’s a 10-minute walk to the riverfront or a three-minute ride in one of the golf carts that come with your tent or cabin rental. Since the river hovers around 72 degrees year-round, swimming can be extended long past hot summer months. There’s a volleyball court, a Bocce ball court, pickleball, yoga classes, and casting lessons. You can book fly fishing excursions, river tubing adventures, and kayaking trips. You can hike, bike, or drive on the trails, nearly a mile of which slopes down through a 105-yearold pecan grove to follow the river. There’s even a skeet shooting spot down the road from the resort. Sometimes live music will be scheduled, and there are fire pits for the all-important camping treat—s’mores. While there isn’t a full restaurant on-site, the various food options are tempting. The Yeti dinner is popular:

you’ll pick from a list of a main dish, a side, an appetizer, a dessert, and a sauce. “For example, bruschetta, tenderloin steak with horseradish sauce, veggies, and a skillet cookie. We’ll prep that and guests cook it themselves. We also have a private chef we bring on-site for special occasions. They’ll do a full questionnaire with the guests and curate a meal for them,” says Sammy. A newer option is breakfast and lunch, served poolside or delivered to your accommodations. Choose from things like the migas plate, the waffle plate, the breakfast taco plate, smoothies, immunity shots, and more. What else does the resort offer? A chance to explore a bit of hill country. of Texas, you know you’ll eat well, and you can browse bookshops, music shops, and clothing boutiques in the historic city square. Wahwahaysee caters to guests from all walks of life, but there’s a real family-friendly vibe, and the Dillards embrace that. “It’s such a fun activity to experience as a family, to bond on a camping trip. You’ll see people hanging out on the deck, using the Big Green Egg, people enjoy being out there and cooking dinner out there,” says Donnie. The Wahwahaysee Resort is 40 minutes from downtown Austin, 45 minutes from San Antonio, and just 20 minutes from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Since bursting onto the scene in 2000, CrossFit, a high-intensity fitness concept developed by a former gymnast and trainer, has proven it has staying power, with an impressive number of affiliated gyms, now in the thousands nationwide. The growth demands attention, especially from fitness experts, who are weary of how easily a standard gym routine turns stale. When a

The growth demands attention, especially from fitness experts, who are weary of how easily a standard gym routine turns stale. client’s initial burst of commitment wears off, monotony often takes hold; after all, there are only so many ways to lift a barbell, right? CrossFit’s once-novel concept retains participation, bordering on discipleship, with an interactive rotation of fitness challenges in a team-like environment that supports each member’s success. At CrossFit Westwood in Fort Worth’s Near Southside district, trainer Trent Volentine has seen the program in action, watching gym members wield its methods to reach their fitness goals and build lasting friendships in today’s growingly disconnected world. But what exactly is CrossFit? Is it for everybody? Trent explains his first-hand experience with it and what makes Westwood unique.

UNDERSTANDING CROSSFIT

CrossFit is a dynamic strength and conditioning program that blends various training styles, including

weightlifting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and functional movements. When members are outside, you’ll see them carrying sandbags or dragging sleds, motivated by the enthusiastic cheers of fellow CrossFitters coming from all sides. Each person is encouraged to do their best, from wherever they are in their fitness journey. Trent explains that a common misconception is that one must already be in peak physical shape to start CrossFit. “We’re here to guide you at any fitness level,” he says. Coaches are always available to tailor the workout, sharing modifications that ease or harden intensity and ensure everyone remains safe. Injury fears often stem from individuals pushing beyond their limits, but at Westwood, careful coaching and scaling options mitigate these risks. The gym prioritizes safety by emphasizing form and proper progression. CONTINUED >

WHAT SETS WESTWOOD APART?

Unlike many gyms, Westwood employs a fulltime staff, allowing coaches to be more involved in creating cohesive programming, connecting with members, and developing ways to improve the gym. Each program considers members’ fitness levels, goals, and preferences, resulting in a well-rounded approach that caters to everyone. Adjoining the CrossFit gym, Westwood keeps a second facility that offers a traditional experience and 24/7 access for greater flexibility. Members can utilize both spaces to keep workouts fresh and expand fitness possibilities.

A THRIVING COMMUNITY

What truly distinguishes Westwood is its vibrant community. Members do more than exercise together—they form meaningful connections that extend outside of the gym. Whether members are participating in run clubs, enjoying post-workout coffee, or gathering for annual events like Field Day, Westwood fosters an atmosphere of friendship and mutual encouragement. Trent’s Free Coffee Fridays, featuring coffee from his business, Extinct Coffee Company, is just one example of community building at Westwood. After class, members stay to chat and bond over a fresh brew, establishing a ritual everyone now looks forward to.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND WESTWOOD

Owner Matt Hayne’s vision for Westwood stems from a lifelong dream of owning a gym that exceeds expectations. Dissatisfied with the status quo of traditional gyms, he set out to create a space that prioritizes quality equipment, cleanliness, and thoughtful design. “I always think there’s room for improvement,” he shares, noting that his goal is continuously enhancing the member experience. His passion drives the ongoing growth and innovation at Westwood. Whether upgrading facilities or refining programming, the Westwood CONTINUED >

staff are committed to raising the standard for gyms everywhere.

WHY CROSSFIT WORKS

The benefits of CrossFit extend far beyond physical fitness. Members often share stories of improved confidence, reduced stress, and strengthened relationships. While physical transformations are common, Trent emphasizes the mental and social rewards above all else. “The gym has created lifetime friends,” he says. One couple even met at Westwood, later marrying and welcoming a daughter into their lives—a testament to the community’s impact.

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR BEGINNERS

For those hesitant to try CrossFit, Trent offers reassurance: “CrossFit can be intimidating, but

one of its greatest strengths is how welcoming everyone is.” the coaches especially support every newcomer and encourage existing members to embrace them with open arms. At Westwood, fitness isn’t about perfection but progress and participation. Trent believes when people are comfortable, they keep showing up.

A PLACE FOR EVERYONE

Westwood Gym isn’t just a place to work out— it’s a hub of support, friendship, and personal growth. Whether you prefer CrossFit’s energetic environment or working out independently in a traditional gym, Westwood offers something for everyone. By creating a space that inspires connection and celebrates every achievement, Matt and his team have redefined what it means to be a fitness community.

A Dentist Bringing Passion, Precision, and Care to His Family Practice

GET TO KNOW DR. PAY TON KELLER

48

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

Dr. Payton Keller from Cowtown Dental Fort Worth always puts the patient first at his practice. While customers expect the newest technology from their dentist, Dr. Keller goes a step further, quickly gaining industry notoriety for his innovative techniques and earning a reputation for his commitment to personability. His patient approach includes building confidence through brighter smiles, attention to detail, and providing a welcoming environment where everyone is family. In a sit-down Q&A, Dr. Keller shares why he became a dentist, his approach to dentistry, and what makes his practice stand out.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A DENTIST?

“My love for science and math initially drew me to the medical field,” Dr. Keller explains. “Shadowing my friend’s dad, who was a dentist, helped me realize that dentistry was the perfect fit for me. It offered a hands-on approach to healthcare, allowing me to see the immediate impact I could make on people’s lives.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FAMILY DENTISTRY SPECIFICALLY?

Family dentistry allows Dr. Keller to interact with patients of all ages and perform many different procedures. “This variety keeps every day engaging and rewarding,” he says. “I love building long-term relationships with families and seeing the progression of their dental health over the years.”

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD AS A DENTIST?

Helping patients regain their confidence is at the heart of Dr. Keller’s work. “Many patients come in hesitant to smile because of how they feel about their teeth. Giving someone the ability to smile confidently is truly priceless,” he reflects.

WHAT HOBBIES OR ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF WORK?

Dr. Keller’s life outside the office reflects his meticulous attention to detail. “I enjoy working out, traveling, and working on cars—especially detailing them to make them look their absolute best. That focus on detail is something I also bring to my dental work,” he shares.

HOW DO YOU MAKE PATIENTS, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN, FEEL COMFORTABLE DURING APPOINTMENTS?

Creating a stress-free environment is a cornerstone of Dr. Keller’s practice. “We use advanced technology like an intraoral scanner, which feels more like playing a video game than being at the dentist. It’s great for kids and adults alike, making the experience more engaging and less intimidating.” CONTINUED >

ARE THERE ANY NEW OR UPCOMING TREATMENTS OR TECHNOLOGIES YOU’RE EXCITED TO INTRODUCE TO YOUR PRACTICE?

Dr. Keller is particularly excited about the efficiency and convenience of same-day crown appointments. “While the concept isn’t new, our decades of experience with it mean we can provide high-quality results in just one visit. Patients appreciate walking out with their treatment complete.”

ARE THERE ANY MENTORS OR COLLEAGUES WHOSE INFLUENCE HAS HELPED SHAPE THE WAY YOU PRACTICE TODAY?

The dentist who previously owned Dr. Keller’s practice has been a guiding force.

“THIS VARIETY KEEPS EVERY DAY ENGAGING AND REWARDING. I LOVE BUILDING LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES AND SEEING THE PROGRESSION

OF

THEIR

HEALTH OVER THE YEARS.”

DENTAL

“His ability to listen to patients, address their concerns, and put them at ease is something I strive to emulate daily,” he says.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?

Dr. Keller takes pride in running a private practice, especially in a landscape where corporate dentistry is increasingly common. “Our dedicated team, many of whom have been with the practice for decades, allows us to provide a personalized, family-oriented experience.”

CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY THROUGH DENTAL SCHOOL AND STARTING YOUR PRACTICE?

Dr. Keller attended dental school during the COVID-19 pandemic, one of many unique challenges that shaped his journey. “Purchasing this practice was a significant milestone. The mentorship I received from the previous doctors made the transition incredibly smooth. Their support and willingness to answer my questions were invaluable.” Despite the occasional obstacle, Dr. Keller persists, driven by a commitment to the client experience—his use of cutting-edge technology and personalized care setting an industry standard. Whether providing same-day crowns, a welcoming environment for kids, or his dedication to continuous improvement, his approach is about more than bright smiles; he’s continuing a legacy of excellence he feels lucky to have inherited.

LEANJUIC

• Enhances Mental Clarity: Many customers report improved focus and a clearer mind, a benefit that can come from the combination of hydration and nutrient-dense ingredients. • Aids in Weight Loss: Juice cleanses are naturally low-calorie and can help with weight management, especially when incorporated into a balanced lifestyle. • Reduces Bloating: A cleanse can help reduce inflammation and bloating by removing heavy foods that often burden the digestive system. • Promotes Glowing Skin: With vitamins like C, E, and beta-carotene, juice cleanses can give your skin a natural glow by encouraging collagen production and reducing inflammation. Clean Juice offers several cleansing options to fit every lifestyle, from the Beginner Cleanse for the apprehensive (a one-day option with four juices followed by a light, clean dinner) to the one- to five-day Original or Super Greens Cleanses for seasoned juicers. The Anti-Inflammatory Cleanse, Immunity Cleanse, and Energy Juice Pack are popular choices, too. No matter the cleanse, each juice is cold-pressed and organic, ensuring the highest quality nutrients without harmful chemicals. So, whether you’re new to juicing or a seasoned cleanser, stop into Clean Juice Clearfork, where Sarah and Jason have a solution for any need. Disclaimer: Results may vary; consult your doctor before beginning a cleanse to ensure it’s right for you.

LIVING BOHO-CHIC WITH WOVEN TEXTURES AND MACRAMÉ

Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS

Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”

ADDING TASTEFUL POPS OF COLOR TO YOUR WHITE ROOM

Do you feel like your all-white room is missing something? Houzz contributor Kelly Porter bets what’s missing is energy. “The best way to add a spark to any space,” she says, “is with bright color.” Kelly says green is one of the easiest colors to live with, looking organic even in its more vivid tones. “When searching for the perfect bright green, think springtime—fresh green grass and newly sprouted leaves,” she says. “These greens have lively undertones that will look comfortable and warm in your white space. Other colors Kelly recommends adding as accents are yellow, royal blue, orange, bluepurple, red-purple and sky blue.

Dr. Lisa Mertz Started LMNT Dental with one goal in mind- change the way patients think about going to the dentist. Oral health is a fundamental ‘element’ to your overall body health that unfortunately is sometimes overlooked due to the fear and anxiety that comes with visiting the dentist. By changing the dental experience, we feel that we can help overcome those fears! Spa-like amenities and exceptional customer service is what we want to give to each patient.
