ROOTED A ND RISING

Eliza Millican has never been very good at standing still. She routinely does handstands by the front door, and her family has learned to carry on whole conversations with her upside down.

On summer afternoons, when the dance studio closes for its break, she dances around the living room just to keep moving. Sometimes she runs through her routines in the backyard, out by the chicken coop. “Basically,” says her younger sister, Carolina, “she’s dancing with the chickens.”

She’s danced since she was three. “It’s her language,” her mother, Emily, says. “It’s how she expresses herself.” Her father, Clint, puts it more plainly: “She can’t live without it.”

This year, that lifelong devotion was recognized in a way the family never saw coming. Studio of MoveMINT, the dance studio Eliza has called home for six years, awarded her its Dancing for Joy scholarship — a gift created in memory of a child named Joy, meant to lift the financial weight off a family for a season. Emily was sitting on the front porch when the studio’s owner called. “I wept when I heard the news,” she says. “It was a very vulnerable and beautiful moment.” Eliza, she learned, had been an immediate choice for the scholarship.

NOT NORMAL, BY DESIGN

The scholarship has Eliza’s name on it. But ask anyone in the Millican house, and they’ll tell you it’s the culmination of the entire family’s effort, love, and dedication to one another.

When describing the family dynamic, Emily and Clint say, almost in unison, “Non-normal.” “I used to think that was a bad thing,” Emily adds, “but God has taught us to lean into it. All five of us had to become a team.”

Some of that came out of necessity. Clint served in Iraq before he and Emily married, and deployed to Afghanistan during their first year of marriage. “We’ve had to cut and paste,” he says, referring to stretches when “I wasn’t really as present as I hoped I would be.” All these years later, the family still talks openly about the long work of coming home. What Emily returns to is his honesty about it. “The kids have seen that their strong, tough dad can say, ‘Hey, I need some help,’” she says. “We face our challenges head on.”

These days, Clint is learning the groundwork of ranch management — though the real turning point, he laughs, was smaller and feathered. “They say chickens are the gateway drug.” They put him back in touch with nature and with himself. “Before Afghanistan, I was great with school. After, it felt like more of a challenge for me. God’s allowed me to get in touch with myself again.” Fatherhood is a balance of strength and softness: “I want my children to be warriors. Empathetic and sympathetic, but fighters when needed.”

If Clint anchors one side of the team, Emily anchors the other. A counselor who helps children heal from trauma, she opened her own practice about four months ago and homeschools all three children. “When we are at home, there is a slowness if we need it. We want them to be self-led learners with intentional family moments along the way,” says Emily.

IN HER CORNER

Alongside Eliza’s scholarship, the studio recognized Carolina, the middle child and a dancer herself, for the way she cheers on her older sister. “It made me feel very happy and joyful, and very grateful,” Carolina says.

Celebrating a sibling’s spotlight isn’t always easy. Years ago, when they enrolled Eliza in the competitive company, the Millicans made the hard call that Carolina would stay in classes but wait to join the company. Still, there’s no rivalry to manage. “It’s Eliza and Carolina together,” Emily says, “not Eliza and her sister.” So when the scholarship came through, the first thing Clint did was make sure Carolina understood what it meant for her, too. With the pressure eased, there would be more room for her own dancing.

And then there is Barrett, the youngest of the siblings, and his sisters’ loudest fan. His finest hour came at a competition where Eliza didn’t place. “He said, ‘What — Eliza didn’t place? Those judges don’t know what they did. Someone needs to call the police,’” Eliza recalls, laughing. “He can be a little extra sometimes. But we love him.” When asked what he loves about watching his sisters, he says, “Just seeing them dance for God and for fun.”

FOR GOD, AND FOR JOY

That competition turned out to be one of the defining moments of Eliza’s young career, not for the loss, but for who showed up. Her teammates, family, and teachers surrounded her, reminding her what dance is really about. She now calls it “a sweet time of growth.”

When asked why she dances, Eliza answers without hesitation: for God. “I feel and know that God

is leading me, that He’s on stage dancing with me.” Wanting to honor both Him and Joy, the child the award was named after, she performed her first-ever solo, to a song called “Sweet Ever After.” “I say God picked the song for me,” she explains. It came on the radio one day, and she just knew. Emily remembers the performance as a full-circle moment. Afterward, a friend told her the dance had stirred her own affection for Christ.

When Eliza looks back on this year, her parents hope she remembers the joy and the intention behind it. “Her name is on it, but it’s been a family effort,” says Clint. “When one does well, everyone does well. We all thrive together.”

As for Eliza, she knows exactly whom she’d thank, and for what. “For cheering me on in the toughest moments,” she says, “and for believing in me, even when I doubt myself.”

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Through Young Eyes

The residents of Trinity Terrace have witnessed remarkable changes throughout their lifetimes—from the arrival of blackand-white television and color broadcasts to satellites, and family road trips that looked very different from those of today. Yet some things remain unchanged: the joy of childhood adventures, the comfort of family traditions, and the lessons learned along the way. In this special feature, several Trinity Terrace residents reflect on favorite memories, cherished traditions, words of wisdom they would share with their younger selves, and the inventions that shaped their generation. Their stories offer a heartwarming glimpse into the experiences that helped make them who they are today.

I have so many favorite memories but I guess the best would be traveling in Europe and camping with my parents when I was 10-12 years old.   We visited Barcelona, Venice, Paris, Rome and had wonderful experiences.

Not to worry about everything so much!!

FAVORITE TRADITION AS A CHILD:

Every summer we visited my Grandmother Ruby in Fayetteville Arkansas. She always made my favorite meal which was chicken and dumplings. She loved to cook and was the best Grandmother to my sister and me.

MAJOR INVENTIONS FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD:

We got our first black and white television set in 1956 when I was 5. I remember it had large antennas on it and we would have to move them around to get the best picture on the tv.

Television (B&W), TV (color), Tri-X camera film which made photos possible without using a flash bulb. I remember summer nights when our father moved the TV to an open window so we could watch shows from the front yard.

Visiting Storybook Forest in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. (This is near Shanksville, where Flight 91 went down). Storybook Forest featured life size scenes of nursery rhymes.

Christmas was a favorite holiday and tradition for my family. I grew up in West Virginia and we always had lots of snow.

ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF:  I would give to my younger self: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!  I doubted myself so many times.

MAJOR INVENTIONS FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD:  Color TV. We got one when I was in first grade!

FAVORITE TRADITION AS A CHILD:

Going to my grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve. My cousins would be there, lots of food, presents, and the occasional dreaded article of clothing as a gift.

MAJOR INVENTIONS FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD:

I saw my first TV show in 1949. It was the Lone Ranger in black and white and on a tiny screen. I could not believe my eyes. We got a TV a year later. Also polio vaccine. I no longer worried every summer about getting polio.

Out of all the trips I’ve taken to escape the Texas summer heat, it remains one of my favorites, something I know to be true for many North Texans. Just over 2.5 hours by plane, and then a quick 35-minute drive from Salt Lake City, it is home to two world-class ski resorts, award-winning restaurants, and plenty of fun and activities for visitors at any time of year. Whether you plan a weekend getaway or a longer stay, and whether you come with your immediate family or your family that spans several generations, there will be so many things you’ll want to do, it’ll be hard to know where to start.

Park City Mountain, one of the two resorts that call Park City home, is a hub of summer activities, including the longest alpine slide in the U.S., the Zip Rider, where those

The Deer Valley Summer Concert Series, on select weekends through mid-August, partners with the Utah Symphony to bring visitors a unique show every time. It’s the perfect place to bring your blanket, chairs, snacks, and entire family for an evening of music. The Canyons Village Concerts on the Slopes series take place throughout July and August in Canyons Village; these ticketed, live music events are also extremely popular with visitors and residents alike.

Milestones are meant to be celebrated! Whether for a wedding, anniversary, or birthday, taking time to gather with family and friends to mark the occasion is fun and meaningful. Ten years ago, the joy of celebrating others prompted A.J. and Shannon Gaston to transition from planning corporate events to focusing on planning and facilitating personal celebrations. Through Integrity Events & Design, they provide full event planning, event design, wedding coordination, milestone celebrations, corporate event planning, and professional bartending services.

This husband-and-wife team channel their expertise to design personalized celebrations that reflect the personalities of their clients. “For us, every event is different and everything we do is very unique,” shares Shannon. “I am constantly looking for inspiration in my surroundings and how I can connect that to my job because we do not copy and paste anything. Each event is customized specifically for the client.”

Integrity Events recently planned a 40th birthday celebration and Shannon loved working with their client through every step of the process. “Keely and I definitely connected off the bat,” says Shannon. “She is fun-spirited and such a blessing to work with. She gave me a general vision of what she was looking for and my role was to create something that was aesthetically pleasing and really matched her vibe.”

Keely chose a restaurant for the celebration and wanted a luxurious western atmosphere to reflect the heart of Fort Worth without leaning too heavily into the stereotypical western theme. “Through the design process, we helped her fine-tune her color palette and then really elevated the experience with a few of my favorite things, cowhide leather and chiffon,” explains Shannon. “Then we aligned everything with fringe through a couple of things I created, specifically leather fringe lamps that provided lower mood lighting and brought a warm feeling to the area.”

Throughout the space, Shannon incorporated texture to set the tone for the celebration. “I like including different textures and layering each one in a different manner to where when a guest sits down, they feel energized by that moment,” she says. “I want them to love everything in front of them and, as their eye is drawn to each individual piece, they have fun exploring what they are seeing and experiencing.”

Although each event designed by Integrity Events & Design is unique, Shannon finds that special decade birthday celebrations, like Keely’s, open endless possibilities for themes and individual flair. “These are some of my favorite because they are personalized to just one person as opposed to a traditional concept like a wedding,” says Shannon. “With celebrations like this, it's fine-tuned to one person, and it gives the person an opportunity to share what they love and celebrate in a particular format.”

For Shannon, a vital part of creating a unique experience is tailoring elements to the person and the occasion. “I think that the most fun part of the process is being able to create an element that we've never done before and is not going to be duplicated again,” she says. “I love sharing with

them that it was created solely to celebrate them during this specific time in their life.”

Professional event planners like A.J. and Shannon bring with them a wealth of expertise and established collaboration with vendors to ensure that the person being celebrated can truly enjoy the festivities without the uncertainty and stress of planning the event. “We want to save them all the hours of planning and sourcing all the things,” says Shannon. “We just want them to just show up and give themselves permission to have a blast and celebrate.”

Dawn King’s fascination with courtroom law began in childhood, but an encounter during college ignited a passion for making sure children and families are prepared and protected. “I was majoring in criminal justice, so I assumed that was my career path, but I met this little girl who was in foster care at a children’s shelter,” shares Dawn. “Meeting her really affected me and I went on to work at the children’s shelter, then I became a social worker and worked for Child Protective Services, and now I’m an attorney.”

Dawn represents Fort Worth children and families both inside and outside the courtroom. In 2022, she established the Dawn King Law Group, a firm dedicated to helping families navigate the complexities of family law. One area of expertise for Dawn is estate planning, which includes helping clients create documents such as a Will, Trust, Medical Power of Attorney, Advance Directive, Durable Power of Attorney, and Declaration of Guardian.

Having these directives in place provides peace of mind for the person as well as a clear and less complicated path for family managing the estate.

“Dying without a Will or Trust means probate courts assume control of the decedent’s estate and sort through the assets and liabilities,” explains Dawn.

“Establishing a Will still means those assets go through the probate process, but there is a legally established document providing a roadmap to the deceased’s wishes.”

Although many of these documents seem straightforward, legal counsel provides clarity on issues and the law, which can quickly become complicated. In situations where there is a large estate or a large or blended family, it may be helpful to create a Trust in addition to a Will. Trusts ensure that assets are managed and preserved to be used in the way intended by the person after they are gone.

There are also special circumstances where a Trust is necessary for minor beneficiaries who cannot legally inherit or for adult beneficiaries with disabilities or special needs. “Minors are prohibited from owning real property or inheriting assets

under Texas law. So, if you have minor children, you will need to designate a trustee to manage the estate until the child is legal age,” says Dawn. “If you have a child that has special needs or receives government benefits, if they’re going to inherit, then you really need to establish a Special Needs Trust so that they don’t lose any benefits like Medicaid.”

Many people believe estate planning can wait until retirement age. However, anyone age eighteen or over should consider having a plan in place in case of unexpected circumstances. “Accidents can happen to anyone, and a person’s life and decision-making abilities can be taken at any time. A Power of Attorney is essential to have for anyone in case something happens and you’re not able to make medical or financial decisions,” explains Dawn. “In some cases, that could lead to unnecessary family conflict or burdens being put on people you wouldn’t otherwise want.”

It is also important to review and update legal directives every few years and after any major life events such as purchasing a home or property, losing a loved one, or change in marital status. Updating beneficiaries is essential to ensuring that assets are distributed appropriately. “The law also changes,” explains Dawn. “So it’s important to make sure everything is in accordance with the code and that the details are up to date so that the plan remains valid.”

1. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF — WHERE DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL, AND WHAT'S SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

My name is Lylah St. Peter, and I recently graduated from Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth. This fall, I will be attending the University of South Carolina. Throughout high school, I was involved in varsity field hockey, basketball, track, and golf while also taking on leadership roles and community service with NCL. I love being busy and doing things both in and out of the classroom. Something people might be surprised to learn about me is that I’m left-handed, while both of my parents are right-handed, which has always made me feel a little unique.

2. YOU'RE A PATIENT AT PERKINS ORTHODONTICS. WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE THERE BEEN LIKE, AND HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP?

I’ve had a great experience with Perkins Orthodontics over the years. Everyone in the office is always friendly, and they do a great job of making patients feel welcome. Going to appointments never felt like a hassle because the staff genuinely cares about their patients. I first heard about the scholarship through Perkins Orthodontics and thought it was such a cool opportunity. I really appreciate that they support students not only through orthodontic care but also by investing in their education and future goals.

3. BEYOND THE CLASSROOM, WHAT ACTIVITIES OR CAUSES HAVE YOU BEEN MOST INVOLVED IN, AND WHICH HAVE MEANT THE MOST TO YOU?

Outside the classroom, athletics played a major role in my high school experience. I competed in varsity field hockey, which taught me teamwork, resilience, and discipline. I was also heavily involved in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student Visionaries of the Year campaign, where I helped raise over $12,000 for blood cancer research and support services. Additionally, I served as President of Trojan Sisterhood, a mentorship group at TVS focused on building connections between freshman and senior students.

4. YOUR ESSAY FOCUSED ON YOUR GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH WHAT YOU WROTE ABOUT AND WHAT INSPIRED THAT VISION?

In my essay, I wrote about my passion for combining business and athletics into a future career. As a student-athlete, I have always been fascinated by the impact sports have on individuals, teams, and communities. Through my experiences, internships, and community involvement, I discovered a strong interest in the business side of athletics. These opportunities showed me how much happens behind the scenes to help athletes succeed. They inspired me to pursue a career where I can combine my love of sports with business.

I plan to study finance at the University of South Carolina while exploring opportunities related to sports management and the business side of athletics. My long-term goal is to attend law school and eventually become a private sports agent. I am drawn to that career because it combines my interests in business, leadership, and sports.

6. HOW WILL THIS SCHOLARSHIP DIRECTLY IMPACT YOUR ABILITY TO REACH THOSE GOALS, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?

This scholarship will help reduce some of the financial stress that comes with pursuing a college education. It will allow me to focus more fully on my academics and opportunities while at South Carolina. Beyond the financial benefits, receiving this scholarship is an incredible honor and a vote of confidence in my future. Knowing that others believe in my goals motivates me even more. My family and I are extremely grateful for the generosity of Perkins Orthodontics.

7. WHO OR WHAT HAS SHAPED THE PERSON YOU ARE TODAY — A MENTOR, A TEACHER, A FAMILY MEMBER, OR A DEFINING EXPERIENCE?

My dad, Jerry St. Peter, has had the biggest impact on who I am today. Growing up, people would tell us we looked identical, but besides just looks, he has always encouraged me to work hard, stay confident, and never be afraid to take on new challenges. I watched him lead by example and put his family first while still achieving his own goals. He has taught me the importance of perseverance, integrity, and treating people with respect. Many of the values that guide me today came from watching the way he approaches both work and life.

8. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT GROWING UP IN THE WEST FORT WORTH COMMUNITY?

What I love most about West Fort Worth is the strong sense of community. Whether through schools, athletics, or local businesses. Growing up here has given me opportunities to learn from mentors, develop lifelong friendships, and give back to causes I care about. I am so grateful for the experiences and relationships that West Fort Worth has given me.

• 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yogurt (or dogsafe yogurt alternative)

• 1/2 cup of unsweetened, plain applesauce

• 1/4 cup of water or low-sodium chicken broth

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Mix the yogurt, applesauce, and water or chicken broth in a bowl until well combined.
