Investment
Investment. By definition, it’s the act of dedicating time, energy, or resources toward something with the hope of a worthwhile return. But in practice, it’s so much more. Whether it’s our community, relationships, finances, or personal growth, the things we invest in shape our futures and the lives of those around us.
We can invest in our community by supporting local businesses, schools, and organizations. Volunteering and mentoring are powerful ways to contribute to future generations. On a broader scale, participating in public surveys and staying informed about city planning are investments in the places we call home.
Financial investments help us build security and achieve long-term goals, while personal investments—spending quality time with loved ones or fostering deeper connections—bring immeasurable rewards to both ourselves and the people we care about.
While the ways we choose to invest may look different for everyone, the common thread is the hope of making a positive impact. This month’s issue explores various ways we can invest in our lives—whether by nurturing our community, planning for our financial future, or prioritizing the relationships that matter most.
Every investment we make is an act of hope and commitment. As you read this issue, we hope you’ll feel inspired to invest in the people, places, and dreams that matter most to you.
Here’s to a month full of growth, connection, and meaningful returns.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
A licensed attorney since 2007, Cara Featherstone brings years of probate experience to her role as Senior Vice President and Trust Officer at American National Bank & Trust where she helps clients navigate difficult times as well as prepare for the future. During her career, Cara has served as dependent administrator, independent executor, guardian of the person, guardian of the estate, or receiver in more than one hundred cases.
“Many times, contacting a probate attorney is one of the first and only interactions a person has with the legal system. Usually, a person is distraught and managing grief all while trying to figure how to get bills paid, get access to funds to pay the bills, care for children, deal with creditors, secure property, etc.,” shares Cara. “It is extremely overwhelming and I love being able to help families in these situations. I enjoy helping families resolve conflict and get to a good status quo as well as providing a clear line of communication and plan for the future.”
As Cara guides clients through the planning process, it is important for them to understand the difference between a will and a trust as well as why they are essential in comprehensive planning. She shares these important pieces of information to consider. ARTICLE BY
WILL VS. TRUST
A will takes effect after a person dies and can name guardians for minor children and make disposition of assets. A trust can manage assets during a person’s lifetime and bypass probate.
EVERYONE NEEDS A WILL
Having a will is absolutely necessary to determine what happens to your assets when you die. When someone passes without a will, the state dictates who inherits their assets in accordance with the laws of intestate succession. Thus, without a will, the Court doesn’t get to take into account the Decedent’s wishes or the fact that a child was estranged, etc. The Court is bound by the law which usually doesn’t match up with the families’ expectation of who is going to get what after someone passes away.
GUARDIANSHIP AND CARE OF CHILDREN
Most parents struggle with who is going to take care of their minor children or children with special needs when they die. Taking the time now to make a well-formed estate plan is essential.
BENEFITS OF A TRUST
Creating a trust allows families to plan for wealth succession. There are many tax reasons for creating a trust; however, utilizing a trust has so many other benefits. A trust is a good mechanism for controlling the flow of assets for a child/beneficiary with substance abuse or credit problems. A trust and estate plan can be as creative as the person drafting it, and the flexibility provides so many options that aren’t available when a person dies without a will or trust.
UNDERSTANDING A SPECIAL NEEDS TRUST
A Special Needs Trust is a unique tool that allows assets to flow to an individual while still maintaining their eligibility for government benefits. When a person with special needs is receiving funds from a lawsuit settlement or inheriting funds, the creation of a special needs trust might be appropriate when a beneficiary would be eligible for government assistance programs like Medicaid or Medicare but for the existence of the trust assets. Our team works hard to understand and respect the unique needs of each beneficiary. We work hand in hand with families and are flexible in designing a plan to meet the beneficiary’s short- and long-term goals. My goal is to ensure the administration of the special needs trust not only complies with its terms but that the clients are treated with compassion and dignity.

A TRUST PROVIDES CLARITY
If a person has a blended family, a trust can go a long way toward helping avoid conflict after his or her passing. Trusts also can help eliminate the necessity for loved ones to have to go through the lengthy and costly probate court process after death. A trust can facilitate
“I ENJOY HELPING FAMILIES RESOLVE CONFLICT
charitable giving. A trust can also help preserve family wealth and legacy and provide protection from creditors and ex-spouses.
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
The future is unexpected. Certainty lies in the fact that everyone will pass away some day; we don’t live forever. Now is the time to be proactive about planning who will be guardian of your minor children when you are gone, how your debts are going to be handled, who will inherit your assets, etc.
I hear from a lot of folks that they don’t need a will or trust because they don’t have kids or because they don’t have enough money to worry about. That’s the wrong way of thinking. Every person can benefit from planning.

Three Road Trips; One Route
Celebrate Route 66’s Centennial Year
ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN
The wind in your hair, tunes playing on the stereo, good company, and snacks galore—the quintessential summer road trip. For those of us who grew up in the United States, a road trip screams vacation, family, and fun. And there are no roads more famous than Route 66. Known as “America’s Main Street,” it was built in 1925 and took travelers through numerous states and cities, including Chicago, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Flagstaff, and Santa Monica, CA.
2026 is the centennial celebration of the highway, and for North Texans, there are a few destinations perfect for those who want to celebrate. Three cities, three road trips: two are easy weekend getaways, and the other is a far but perfect summer vacation destination.
TRIP ONE: TULSA, OK
At just over four hours away, Tulsa is a great weekend road trip. The city has big plans for Route 66’s birthday celebration, including the Capital Cruise on May 30, 2026, a classic car parade organizers are hoping will be the largest of all time and the AAA Route 66 Road Fest slated for June 27-28, 2026, which will feature all sorts of car-inspired fun like the Pinewood Derby, Hot Wheels races, interactive art, and more.
Soak up other memorabilia while in Tulsa, like wandering through Meadow Gold Mack Outpost, where 20-foot-tall Mack the Friendly Lumberjack reigns supreme, before you go on a treasure hunt to find more of the iconic fiberglass statues in town, including Buck and Stella Atom and Cowboy Bob the Muffler Man.
2026 is the centennial celebration of the highway, and for North Texans, there are a few destinations perfect for those who want to celebrate.
If you want to stay somewhere close to the parade route. Ambassador Hotel Tulsa, a historic building that’s been reimagined as a boutique hotel with just 55 rooms, a photo booth tucked away in the lobby, and a hidden library, is located right on the parade route. The hotel’s beloved restaurant, The Chalkboard Kitchen + Bar, will have drink specials and a limited-time menu in honor of its 50th “Golden” anniversary in July 2026.
TRIP TWO: OKLAHOMA CITY, OK
Make plans to be in town for the Route 66 ‘Kickin It’ Centennial Birthday Bash on May 30, where road enthusiasts, families, and music lovers alike can enjoy all sorts of pop-up events like the Oklahoma Kids Market, the Route 66 Travel Hub, the Centennial Concert, and the Neon Nights Drone Show.
Book a stay at one of the premier hotels within walking distance of the event, like the Colcord Hotel, a unique property housed in Oklahoma City’s first
skyscraper, a 1910 landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is where you’ll find FLINT, a modern-American restaurant offering tempting menu items including a raw oyster bar, Cowboy Caviar, braised short ribs, chicken-fried steak, and a limited-time drink just for the celebration, the 100-Year Highway.
There’s also The National Autograph Collection Downtown OKC, which is probably one of the coolest hotels in Oklahoma City. Why? It’s in the iconic 1931 First National Bank building, where the past and the present blend seamlessly to create a one-of-a-kind lodging experience. Admire the original murals, see bank teller windows, and try one of the special cocktails created for the centennial event— the Mile Marker 1 or the Gateway Glow—in any of the dining establishments on the property, including a swanky bar inside the original bank vault.
TRIP THREE: FLAGSTAFF, AZ
Flagstaff is 13 hours away from Fort Worth; it’s worth the drive for many reasons, and Route 66 is at the top of the list. Head there in early summer for the Route 66 Centennial celebration on June 6, a festival that includes fun like nostalgic reenactments, classic car show, sky writing, and streetscape art installations. Cruise along Route 66 to scout out original buildings, neon signs, and art, like the Western Hills Motel neon sign and the Phoenix Avenue Route 66 mural. Grabbing a locally-brewed pint in the family-friendly tap room at Mother Road Brewing Company is a must.
Want to feel like you’re reliving the glory days of the iconic highway? Stay at the Americana Motor Hotel, which sits directly on Route 66. The retro-futuristic property has tons of fun features, including 1970s skiwear-inspired headboards, firepits, bikes to ride around town, and even a “barkyard” for furry friends. It’s just 1.5 hours away from the Grand Canyon, so it’s also a great jumping-off point if you want to visit the park.
If you’re traveling with kids, Village Camp Flagstaff is the ultimate playground. They offer cabins and RV sites to guests, as well as amenities: a pool, a clubhouse, the Bistro & Bar, a mountain-view amphitheater, a playground, pickleball and basketball courts, host seasonal, family-friendly events, and much more.
Which trip feels right for you and your crew? Wherever you choose to go, may the wind always be at your back and may the number of Buc-ee’s along the way be plentiful.

LIGHTHOUSE IMPRESSIONS
We invited parents and loved ones to share meaningful stories of success and progress at Lighthouse School — & the following reflections are a few of the heartfelt responses we received words.
Q & A WITH LIGHTHOUSE PARENTS:
Please share a short story or memory about your child's time at Lighthouse. What made it special?
I will never forget the first time my son came home and said he made friends at school. Before Lighthouse, I never thought I would hear those words.
Has there been a memory of your time at Lighthouse School where you felt a sense of community?
Every time one of our girls faces a challenge, their team jumps in to work together to come up with a solution. They host events, take them on field trips, etc. I remember going to the pumpkin patch on a field trip and every child had an adult assigned to keep them safe and help them explore.
Please share a short story or memory about your child's time at Lighthouse. What made it special?
Before coming to Lighthouse, my son’s anxiety prevented him from consistently engaging in classroom activities and demonstrating his intelligence. After a few short weeks at Lighthouse, he was confidently presenting an “About Me” presentation for his class and consistently raising his hand to answer questions in class. He comes home confident and so proud of himself.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF NORTH TEXAS SPRINGTIME
GUIDE TO WORTH CAMPING
In Fort Worth, spring is that sweet spot between winter’s chill and summer’s blazing heat—the perfect window to pack up the tent and head outdoors. Before the North Texas sun turns relentless, we’re gifted a few golden weeks of warm afternoons, cool evenings, and wide-open skies that seem to stretch on forever.
This is the season when the prairie grasses start to green, wildflowers dot the trails, and lake waters shimmer under comfortably mild temperatures. It’s a chance to slow down, swap traffic noise for birdsong, and rediscover the landscapes that make our corner of Texas worth exploring. This guide is here to help you make the most of spring camping season around Fort Worth, before the temperatures climb and summer schedules take over.
WAYS TO UNPLUG AND UNWIND
Camping doesn’t have to be packed with plans to be meaningful. In fact, some of the most memorable moments happen when you intentionally leave space in the schedule. When calendars fill quickly and days tend to run long, a spring camping trip offers a rare opportunity to shift gears.
1. Slow mornings – Ease into the day without alarms or strict plans; allow the quiet to set the tone.
2. Nature watching – Spend time observing the details: drifting clouds, twinkling stars in the wide-open Texas sky, and birds moving from tree to tree.
3. Evening strolls – Take a walk through the campground as the air cools and the light softens.
FINDING A CAMPSITE:
Where you set up can make all the difference in how your trip feels. Around Fort Worth, spring weather is usually mild, but picking the right spot will help you stay comfortable and relaxed all weekend long. 20 minutes southwest of downtown Fort Worth lies Benbrook Lake, home to many campsites.
1. South Holiday Park
Location: West side of Benbrook Lake
South Holiday Park offers something for every kind of camper. Enjoy scenic trails perfect for hiking and horseback riding, plus convenient access to a boat launch for days on the water. Fishing, wildlife viewing, and year-round camping make it a reliable, adventure-filled getaway in any season.
2. Bear Creek Campground
Location: South side of Benbrook Lake, east side of Bear Creek
Bear Creek Campground offers easy boat launching and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. It’s a great spot to connect with nature, but keep in mind, that camping is season and only available from April to September, making it best suited for spring and summer outdoor adventures.
KNOW
BEFORE YOU GO:
1. Reservations: Many popular sites fill up fast; book early to secure your spot.
2. Weather: Spring can bring sudden storms and cool nights; pack layers and rain gear.
3. Fire Rules: Check for any burn bans or fire restrictions before lighting a campfire. Follow local guidelines for firewood.
4. Wildlife: Be aware of local animals and invasive species. Store food securely and remove plants, seeds, animals and mud from boots, gear, pets and vehicles.
5. Boat Gear: Clean, drain, and dry boats and other equipment that contacts water.
6. Pets: Check pet policies for your campsite and always keep pets leashed.
7. Check Park Hours: Some parks have specific opening and closing times for day visitors or gates. Respect quiet hours for the benefit of all campers!
8. Etiquette: Share trails and campsites respectfully with others. Leave no trace and dispose of all trash properly.
ESCAPE THE BUSYNESS OF THE CITY AND ENJOY THE CALM OF THE OUTDOORS. TAKE TIME TO SLOW DOWN BEFORE THE SUMMER HEAT SETS IN.
Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors
The Stylish Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, “Oh, Grow Up!”
Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since King Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls.” Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall.” Designers have dubbed them “statement walls.” But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do — as “vertical gardens.”
A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade.
The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well.
Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress.
Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down, making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well.
As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also, as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.

BUILDING A LEGACY WITH JOHN ASKEW CUSTOM HOMES
ARTICLE BY BROOKE WADSWORTH
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHET BELL PHOTOGRAPHY
THOUGHTFULLY BUILT, MADE TO LAST
When Mike and Taryn set out to build their dream home, they wanted a custom home builder who would understand their vision, respect the unique character of their land, and be deeply rooted in the local community. After careful research and conversations with friends and neighbors, one name kept rising to the top: John Askew Custom Homes.
“John Askew Custom Homes talked about working with the land you have and making your home fit you, which was important to us. We bought a unique property and wanted our builder to help us with a unique home, and it was clear from the start that they were up to the challenge,” shares Mike.
The philosophy of designing with both the family and the land in mind became the foundation for everything that followed.
DESIGNING FOR GENERATIONS
From the beginning, Mike and Taryn envisioned more than just a beautiful house. They wanted a home that would serve their family for decades, a place where their children could grow up and where holidays and gatherings would become treasured traditions.
“We knew we wanted to do a one-story ranch-style home with a nice big backyard,” Taryn explains. “We considered the kids a lot when we were building. We really wanted a space that would grow
with them, and somewhere we could host family and friends for years to come.”
With that goal in mind, they prioritized the spaces that would bring people together.
“We put a lot of emphasis and effort into the living room, kitchen, and backyard, as we wanted those to be as large and functional as possible,” says Mike.
Hosting has always been part of their lifestyle, so it was important that the home support that seamlessly. At the same time, they were committed to preserving the natural beauty of their property.
TODAY , MIKE AND TARY
“We’ve hosted holidays in the past, so it was important that we could have a nice place to host people while enjoying the land that we built on,” Taryn adds. “We wanted to keep the trees that were initially on the land and be able to really enjoy the scenery around us.”
A COLLABORATIVE AND TRANSPARENT START
The process for building their never felt rushed. Clear communication and a strong team dynamic made the early stages both productive and reassuring.
“Jane and Jared from the sales team were truly amazing and an absolute pleasure to work with,” Mike and Taryn share.
“Communication was clear from the very beginning, and they really cared about getting us the home that we wanted while being true to our vision.”
Budget conversations were handled with the same transparency. Rather than limiting possibilities, the team offered creative solutions that allowed the couple to protect their must-haves while staying within their budget.
“They were really helpful in offering ideas on how we could stay on budget without sacrificing what mattered most to us,” Taryn says.
Mike especially appreciated the complementary strengths within the sales team. “Jared has the experience and foundation
A NOTE FROM JANE AND JARED OF JOHN ASKEW CUSTOM HOMES
“Working with Mike and Taryn was a genuine delight from the very beginning. Their excitement about the land they had just purchased was contagious, and after visiting the property ourselves, it was easy to see why. We knew preserving and working with the natural elements would be essential throughout the design process. Being part of the journey at this early stage is something we truly value, as it helps establish the tone and vision for the entire project. Through true partnership and collaboration, Mike and Taryn’s vision began to take shape in a meaningful and intentional way. It was wonderful working with them through the entire build and getting to see their vision come to life.”
of being a project manager, so he’s intimately aware of the construction process, while Jane was great with logistics and all the behind-thescenes work. They worked seamlessly together.”
FROM INSPIRATION TO REALITY
With the vision clarified and the team in place, design began. Mike and Taryn partnered closely with Dale Grandmaison of Grand Home Design, bringing photos and ideas to weekly meetings as the plans evolved.
“We showed him inspiration photos and met with the design team every week as the iterations got closer to our vision,” Mike explains. “We had a whole team helping our dream home come to life.”
After finalizing the design, the team reviewed costs in detail to ensure alignment between vision and budget. From the initial groundbreaking to move-in day, the entire process took approximately 13 months, a timeline the couple felt was efficient and well-managed.
A REFRESHINGLY SMOOTH BUILDING PROCESS
For homeowners who have worked with contractors before, the building process can sometimes feel stressful or unpredictable. Mike and Taryn braced themselves for potential challenges but were pleasantly surprised.
“After dealing with so many different contractors in the past, you become very acquainted with the lack of communication, dirty work sites, and a stressful process from start to finish,” Mike says. “But the team was never like that. Communication was spot on, they left their work sites clean, and they did what they said they would. They always kept their word.”
That consistency extended into the design and selection phase. John Askew Custom Homes provides access to an interior designer, ensuring that every finish and fixture aligns with the homeowner’s style.
“Kristie Branch was an absolute joy to work with,” Taryn shares. “Sometimes it was hard for me to know what would go together, and she was great about offering her opinion without pushing me in certain directions. She attended every appointment with us to help us find our perfect fit. Between her and our project manager, Matt Tanner, they were so helpful.”
THOUGHTFUL DETAILS THAT MAKE IT HOME
One of the greatest advantages of building a custom home is the freedom to personalize every detail. Mike and Taryn eagerly embraced that opportunity with the guidance of their design-build team.
“I have so many favorite spots in our home,” Taryn says. “We turned an oversized closet into a craft room for our daughter, which she absolutely loves. We have a large living room where the fireplace sits on its own with its own design and focus, and two tall windows providing beautiful natural light to our main spaces.”
The backyard, however, may be the true heart of the home. Designed as an extension of their indoor living space, it reflects their commitment to both family time and entertaining.
“I think the space we’ve enjoyed most is our backyard,” Mike shares. “The right side has an outdoor kitchen, and the left side has an outdoor living space with big vaulted ceilings and comfortable furniture. In the middle is a big square turf area that’s gated in where the kids can safely play.”
A HOME BUILT TO LAST
Today, Mike and Taryn’s home stands as more than just a finished project. It’s where holidays will be hosted, where their children will grow up, and where quiet evenings and lively gatherings alike will unfold for years to come.
With a thoughtful design process, clear communication, and a team dedicated to delivering on its promises, their dream home became a reality—one built not just for today, but for generations to come.
“Choosing Dr. Keller as my dentist has been one of the best healthcare decisions I’ve ever made. His expertise, precision, and commitment to excellence are evident in every appointment. The office operates with the highest level of professionalism and kindness, and the staff goes above and beyond to ensure that every patient feels informed and comfortable.
With Dr. Keller’s care and help, he was able to correct my teeth so I could gain the confidence of showing off my smile. I would recommend Dr. Keller to anyone seeking a trusted dental professional who consistently delivers exceptional results.”

Luxury outdoor living spaces that deliver an elevated, resort-style experience with Blue Water Pools
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL
With extensive hands-on experience in the pool industry, Scott McFarland recognized in 1999 that local pool owners needed more than basic service. His deep knowledge of pool chemistry, proper cleaning methods, equipment, and hydraulics—paired with a commitment to outstanding customer service—became the foundation for a higher standard of pool care.
As Scott’s industry expertise continued to grow, he took the next step in 2004 by building his first pool. What began as a natural progression of hands-on experience has since evolved into Blue Water Pools, a company now recognized for designing and constructing luxury custom pools and outdoor living spaces, while also delivering exceptional customer service through professional pool service and maintenance.
“Everything we do is customer-focused,” says Scott. “We want to make sure the customer has a fantastic experience. We’re not looking for a customer now—we’re looking for a customer for life.”
One of the elements that truly sets Blue Water Pools apart is the collective 80-plus years of experience shared by Scott, construction manager Mike Hammonds, and Chris Brabson, Residential and Commercial Designer and Sales and Marketing Manager. “We know what works and what doesn’t based on what we’ve seen through the many thousands of projects we’ve built throughout our careers,” explains Chris. “We are an established business that uses high-end materials and delivers high-quality construction. Just as importantly, we listen to our clients and provide whiteglove, concierge-level service throughout the entire process.”
Blue Water Pools specializes in oneof-a-kind custom designs tailored to each client’s needs and lifestyle. In addition to creating outdoor living spaces from the ground up, the team also remodels existing environments that have deteriorated over time or reimagines them with new features to enhance functionality and enjoyment.
Clients are invited to explore possibilities at one of the largest design centers in North Texas, featuring a curated selection of high-end materials. “Our clients are creating a natural extension of their home—spaces meant to enhance everyday living,” says Chris. “They encourage connection with friends and family while also offering a private retreat. During the design process, we listen closely to what the client wants, how they plan to use their backyard, what their hobbies are, and whether they envision intimate relaxation or large gatherings.” Those insights are then translated into a fully personalized design unique to each home.
For more than 25 years, Blue Water Pools has been family-owned and operated and has transformed backyards into fully customized outdoor living environments, incorporating pools, spas, outdoor kitchens, play areas, and even putting greens. Popular features include water elements that create soothing ambient sound, along with covered seating areas designed for year-round enjoyment. CONTINUED
“Everything we do is c ustomer focused . We want to make sure that the customer has a fantastic experience. We’re not looking for a customer now; we’re looking for a customer for the life .”
One standout project in Southlake exemplifies the ultimate luxury outdoor living experience, blending relaxation and entertainment into a single, breathtaking environment with nearly every imaginable feature.
“It’s the most phenomenal project I’ve ever seen,” says Chris. “The space was designed for entertaining, featuring an expansive outdoor kitchen and bar, along with a dramatic cave that houses a spa, in-water dining and seating areas, a built-in kitchen, and multiple televisions. Above the cave is a fire pit with additional seating, as well as a slide that leads directly into the pool. Walking out of the master suite, there’s a private spa that spills into a river flowing into the first pool, then cascading into a second pool. It’s truly incredible.”
With extensive experience building in North Texas, the Blue Water team understands the unique challenges involved in constructing and maintaining outdoor living spaces in the region. “If you’re investing a significant amount of money in your home, you want it to last,” says Scott. “That requires knowledge
not just of local climate conditions, but also of what lies beneath the surface. Understanding soil composition, hydraulics, clay, and rock conditions is critical to long-term performance.”
Among the most common construction challenges the team encounters are significant changes in yard elevation and complex sub-level soil conditions. “Elevation changes can be addressed through thoughtful engineering and retaining walls to ensure both beauty and safety,” says Chris. “In North Texas, we also frequently deal with expansive soils like clay and caliche. We know where those conditions exist and how to mitigate the risks they pose to structural integrity over time.”
Once a project is complete, Blue Water Pools continues to support homeowners through professional pool service and maintenance, enhanced by stateof-the-art computerized water testing for precise and consistent results. Service customers also have access to a secure online portal that provides realtime insight into their pool, including water test results, service history, technician notes, photos, and route progress—offering full transparency and peace of mind.
“A luxury outdoor space is about far more than aesthetics,” says Scott. “It’s about intention, craftsmanship, and trusting the right team to ensure the entire experience is seamless, enjoyable, and ultimately deeply rewarding.”

Raising Money-Smart Kids
TEACHING FINANCIAL LITERACY AT EVERY AGE
ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TY HARPER PHOTOGRAPHY
In a world of one-click purchases, digital wallets, and instant gratification, teaching children the value of money is more important than ever. Financial literacy is not just about dollars and cents. It is about responsibility, discipline, confidence, and long-term security. When we start early and build intentionally, we give the next generation one of the greatest gifts possible: financial independence and opportunity.
Financial stress is one of the leading causes of anxiety in adulthood. When we teach children how to earn, save, invest, and spend wisely, we give them more than knowledge. We give them confidence and freedom.
Here is how to teach money skills at every stage, from preschool to young adulthood.
EARLY CHILDHOOD (AGES 3–7): BUILD THE FOUNDATION
Young children learn best through play, visuals, and repetition. At this stage, focus on helping them understand that money is earned and choices matter.
• Use clear jars labeled Save, Spend, and Give so they can see money grow.
• Divide birthday money or small allowances into the jars together.
• Read age-appropriate books about earning and saving.
• Play simple money-themed games like Monopoly Junior.
• Offer paid “extra jobs” beyond regular chores to connect effort with income.
Lesson: When children see that money is earned and managed, they begin building healthy financial habits early.
ELEMENTARY YEARS (AGES
8–12):
TEACH PLANNING AND PATIENCE
As children mature, they are ready to set goals and practice delayed gratification.
• Tie allowance to a simple budget that includes saving and spending.
• Help them save for a specific goal instead of buying items for them.
• Encourage small business ventures like lemonade stands, lawn care, craft sales, pet sitting, or Girl Scout cookie sales.
• Review earnings together and discuss profit, spending, and saving.
• Open a savings account to introduce the concept of earning interest.
Lesson: Learning to plan, save, and earn builds patience, confidence, and decision-making skills.
TEENAGE YEARS (AGES 13–18): PRACTICE REAL-WORLD RESPONSIBILITY
The teen years are when financial habits begin to solidify and independence increases.
• Encourage a part-time job to teach time management and responsibility.
• Review pay stubs together and explain taxes and deductions.
• Create a simple monthly budget that includes saving a percentage of income.
• Introduce compound interest and basic investing concepts.
• Discuss college costs, scholarships, savings plans, and student loan realities.
Lesson: Financial choices made during the teen years can shape long-term freedom and opportunity.
YOUNG ADULTS (AGES 18–25): BUILD INDEPENDENCE AND STRATEGY
As young adults enter college or the workforce, financial decisions carry real consequences.
• Teach responsible credit card use and the importance of paying balances in full.
• Explain credit scores and how they impact renting, car loans, and future borrowing.
• Encourage building an emergency fund with several months of expenses.
• Promote living within their means and avoiding lifestyle inflation.
• Start retirement savings early through employer plans or individual accounts.
Lesson: Intentional financial planning in early adulthood creates long-term stability and wealth-building potential.
By modeling healthy financial habits, encouraging entrepreneurial thinking, and creating opportunities to practice money management at every age, we set the next generation up not just to survive financially, but to thrive.

“Stevenson Oaks has so many opportunities to have fun with fellow residents and staff. Everything from exercise classes (yes, they make it fun) to games of all kinds. But, the most endearing of all are the residents who reside here who have become like family.”
In The Lone Star State, we’re known for our independent spirit, but we understand a full life requires connection to one another. In 1962, Methodist Retirement Communities was founded on Texas values to combat loneliness with fellowship and uphold independence. Here, we believe growing old should be just that … growing. With deep Texas roots and faithbased, steadfast leadership, Stevenson Oaks offers a bright future to those who call it home.
Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL
An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.
Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.
A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.
Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?
A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.
Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?
A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.
Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?
A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.
“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”
Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?
A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.
This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

7 THINGS
About The Institute SMART
“I LOVE MY JOB. IT’S A LOT OF WORK, BUT SEEING PEOPLE RECOVERING THEIR MOTION, THEIR WORK, THEIR PLAY, IT’S VERY REWARDING.”
On West 7th, nestled in Fort Worth’s Cultural District, you’ll find The Smart Institute—a female-owned center that offers not only orthopedic and sports therapy, but also neurotherapy, a type of program that isn’t offered just anywhere. Owner Gwen Hanson did a paper on Occupational Therapy in high school and was fascinated by the subject. She moved to DFW for college and decided to pursue a career in that very field. She bought The Smart Institute in 2007 and never looked back. “I love my job. It’s a lot of work, but seeing people recovering their

motion, their work, their play, it’s very rewarding,” she says.
While speaking with Gwen about her passion for recovery and neurodevelopmental therapy, we learned a few things about the Smart Institute along the way. Here are 7 things you need to know about The Smart Institute.
1. THERE IS A SMALL BUT DEDICATED STAFF OF 7.
Between the front office, the therapists, and the technicians, there is over 90 years of combined experience at The Smart Institute. According to Hanson, each staff member has been there for years, which leads to a family-like working environment. “Everybody loves everybody,” she says.
2. THE SMART INSTITUTE OFFERS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY.
It’s hard to find a physical therapy office that also offers OT. Normally, you’ll find one or the other, but according to Hanson, it’s almost like a one-stop shop. “Normally, you’d do one thing at a time, but here, you can get OT treatment and move on to other forms of treatment, all in the same space,” she says.
3. THE SMART INSTITUTE ALSO OFFERS NEURODEVELOPMENTAL THERAPY.
This is a rare service to find. It involves dealing with brain injuries and lifelong disabilities such as cerebral palsy, so the adults who come in for therapy have often been patients for years. As Gwen is certified in NDT, she grew the neuro program at The Smart Institute when she became the owner.
4. THE SMART INSTITUTE IS A TEACHING FACILITY.
Medical students from local universities such as UNT, Weatherford College, Texas Woman’s University, and even the University
of Colorado come to The Smart Institute to further their degree. They stay anywhere between 8-12 weeks, depending on their program. It goes without saying that if students are being educated here, it’s a good place to start your recovery program because you’ll be working with the best.
5. YOU’LL GET MORE THAN MACHINE WORK WHEN YOU COME IN FOR AN APPOINTMENT.
The team at The Smart Institute is very hands-on. You’ll get personalized care in the cozy gym space that has an uplifting vibe, whether you’re recovering from back pain, knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle surgery or receiving treatment for your vestibular system. “It's very upbeat, very playful. There’s always music and laughing, and the temperature’s just right,” says Hanson.
6. YOU’LL ALWAYS BE GREETED WITH A SMILE.
The office administrator, Jennifer Sawyer, is known as “the sparkly one.” She’s the first face you’ll see when you walk in the door, and no matter the weather, she’ll have a smile ready for you.
7. THE SMART INSTITUTE HAS A MASCOT!
Yes, that’s right, when you come to The Smart Institute, you’ll be treated to time with Penelope, the French Bulldog. She’s at the center every day, and she’s so in tune with patients that she knows what time of day regulars come in, she’ll get up and see them if she knows they need attention, or take a nap when she isn’t needed. Penelope has stolen so many hearts that she’s even been a feature pet in a local magazine.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.
HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.
WHY CHOOSE A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM?
The beauty of a gallery wall hanging system lies in its flexibility and ease of use. Traditional picture hanging methods can leave walls full of holes, making it cumbersome to adjust placements or update the display. A hanging system, however, allows for easy adjustments without additional damage to your walls. This feature is particularly advantageous for renters or anyone who likes to refresh their decor frequently.
DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL
The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:
• A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store.
• A collection of frames and artwork.
• A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.
CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS
• The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste:
• Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance.
• Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity.
• Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look.
Enjoy curating a space that is uniquely yours, evolving with your tastes and lifestyle.
INSTALLATION TIPS:
01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE:
Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.
02 LAY IT OUT:
Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.
03 INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position of each piece easily.
04 BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:
Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.
