Over the last few months, I have really been analyzing all fascists of my life. In doing so, I have realized that with these three simple questions, I can easily see the necessary changes I need to make. What do I need to do more? What do I need to do less? How do I make this happen? The bad news was realizing the number of things that I need to change in my life could fill all the pages of this magazine and then some. The good news is that change is up to me and at any point in my life, I can make decisions and move forward. At the top of my list of things to start doing more of (as I’m sure it is for a lot of us ) is spending time with family and loved ones. And not just time, but quality time. As much as I have fought it in my life, I somehow ended up in the group of people who even when trying to spend time with family always has their phone out, constantly checking text messages, emails and even occasionally glancing at social media. The screens have sucked me in. For some, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. In our home, we have noticed that one of the best ways to get out of the muck and mire of the day-to-day is through “exploration and adventure!” There is something about getting out in God’s creation that is good for the soul! It doesn’t have to be a crazy excursion. We have been amazed at how great a simple 45-minute walk around the neighborhood can be. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail, to book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make QUALITY time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! I hope to see you out here!

City Council approves restoration of Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum Fort Worth's City Council approved an $8.5 million renovation of the historic Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. Funds for the project come from the American Rescue Plan Act Revenue Recovery program. Council approved renovations on the concourse, restrooms, grand lobby entrance, and Backstage Club. The Coliseum is known for hosting the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

Hitting the Trails of

Fort Worth

When you think of Dallas-Fort Worth and the Blackland Prairie lands on which the metroplex sits, you might not think of mountain biking. After all, this isn’t Hill Country, and the mountains are hundreds of miles away. But did you know there’s a thriving community of local people dedicated to mountain biking and the opportunities it provides? After all, when you take a mountain bike out for an afternoon, you can discover the open spaces and parks tucked away between the freeways and cities of DFW. You’ll spend time with other riders while gaining a deeper appreciation of the local terrain and beauty of the prairie lands, and it’s one heck of a workout. Randall Archie, the fourth-generation owner of Archie’s Gardenland nursery in Forth Worth, has been riding mountain bike trails for over ten years, and it all began when his good friend and neighbor convinced him to try it out. When they finally

got out on a trail, Archie found himself hooked. Now, he can’t think of anything he’d rather be doing than hitting a trail with his son or his friends. “I call it ‘smile riding,’” he says. “It’s almost like a mini vacation. You can transport yourself away from the daily grind. And there are many moments for good cardio. It’s hard to compare anything to being out on a trail.” People of all ages and abilities can enjoy mountain biking. It’s a fantastic way to spend time with family, whatever your skill level. Choose your trail, and ride for miles on end. If you’ve got little kids, taking it easy “green” trail is just as much fun—and still a workout. If you’ve got older kids and the right kind of bike, you can take on a “black” trail and enjoy the adrenaline rush that hits as you maneuver through creek beds or down a steep hill. Randall Archie’s son, who is now 14 and rides with a team, Team Dirt Track, have been riding together for years. “I try to go

at least twice a week, and even though he doesn’t ride with me as often anymore— he’s way faster—when we do go, it’s a lot of fun,” says Archie. And they don’t stick to just Fort Worth. They go to places with higher elevations and steeper trails. “We go to Bentonville and Fayetteville once a year, and we go to Angelfire, which is a whole different style of riding. We ride everything from double blacks to good old green trails. It’s all a lot of fun.” Back home in Fort Worth, Randall is an involved member of the Fort Worth Mountain Biking Association, or FWMBA, as it’s known. And he’s been busy. Along with FWMBA president Michele Kahne, Archie has been a leading force in creating a new mountain biking trail on an old municipal city golf course. “It’s my passion project,” he says. “My business is in a place where I’m able to help.” A project seven years in the making, Randall Archie alongside Mark Harris and

Wade Chapel worked with the City of Fort Worth to finally begin the building of the bike trail, to be known as the North Z Boaz Mountain Bike Trail, broke ground in early 2023. Designed by bike riders, the course will be four miles of straight track on the 43-acre space. “We used local riders to craft and create the trail. Being rider-designed means the trail is a little more flexible and in tune with how we would ride it,” says Archie. The creation of the North Z Boaz Trail has been a community effort. Funding came through private sponsorships. Local businesses have been huge supporters of the project—Silver Creek Materials has donated 600 yards of soil, and, as a family-owned business, the word on the street is that they can’t wait to ride the trail. “It’s been impressive and refreshing to see all the hard work of the board, the volunteers, and the community. They take such an organized approach to maintaining current trails and looking for open spaces and other new locations that’ll give people more opportunities to ride,” says Archie. Even though the bike trail will officially be open for business later this year, the maintenance and evolution will continue.

There are plans to add a Strider course (think kids on balance bikes), and Randall plans on being a trail steward. This trail will be for everyone. Bike fests will put on Strider races for the tiniest riders. There’s also the opportunity for the trail to be designated as a NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) course. Local youths will have the chance to try their hand (and legs) at an extra-curricular sport they might not try otherwise. It’s an encouraging step for local riders and the organizations behind them that want to introduce mountain biking to more of the Dallas-Fort Worth community. If you’re curious about mountain biking, check out FWMBA’s website, or pick a local trail to ride. Our top picks for easy riding (perfect for beginners and families) include Trinity Trails and the Trinity River Tail in Gateway Park. For more of a challenge (you’ll need to have had riding experience), head to the Dam Drop Trail or the Skyline Loop in Marion Sansome Park. There’s a good chance you’ll see Randall Archie enjoying a cold, hoppy IPA after a ride that includes plenty of ‘smile riding’ with his friends and family.

Imagine waking up in the comfort of what feels like your own bed. You yawn and stretch and think about the day to come. The outdoors beckons, and as you step out the front door, you don’t see a hallway, parking lot, or a busy street— you see the beach, the mountains, the lake, or the forest. Quite literally, your chosen vacation destination is your backyard. Our free time is precious, so when you can place yourself in the middle of where you want to be, without the hassle of getting out of a hotel or house, you have more time to enjoy the simple things that bring you joy. This is one of the reasons (among many others) camping trailers have been popular for decades. With warmer weather on the horizon and travel planning on our minds, we got inspired to learn more about the most iconic trailer of them all—the Airstream. With their signature “silver bullet” look, Airstreams have long been a symbol of freedom and adventure. They also are well-known for their longevity, which is a big reason for their popularity among campers and road travelers.

This status has increased in recent years as people have shown an increased desire for authentic brands offering products that’ll stand the test of time. According to Chris Amelio, the marketing manager at VOGT RV in Fort Worth, Airstream trailers have the highest quality and standards in the RV industry. “75% of the Airstreams built after 1931 are still on the road,” he says. Models vary in length and features. There are Airstreams, like the Basecamp, Bambi, or Caravel models, that, due to their compact size and easy pulling capabilities, can be towed almost anywhere (you don’t need a 4x4 or truck). If you've got a family or want more space, you can opt for a Globetrotter or a Classic, which measures 33 feet long. You can choose a model with a desk unit for remote working options, install solar panels, customize the interior, choose bunk beds, and more. Maybe the idea of an Airstream is enticing, but you’ve never been a trailer person (the navigation, the maneuvering!) That’s completely normal, according to Amelio. “Most other RVs are fairly complicated and can be hard to deal with for first-timers. The beauty of an Airstream comes from its simplicity. Due to their design, the learning curve isn’t as steep as with other types of RVs. Plus, with an Airstream product and a dealership like Airstream of DFW, you have a support system in place to alleviate a lot of potential frustrations, which sets the first experience apart from everyone else.” So, you’re inspired to consider the Airstream life. You’ve seen campsites at local and national parks; you want in on the fun! Your first decision, after investing in an Airstream, of course, is deciding where to go. Luckily, besides the

thousands of RV parks across the country, there are spots just for Airstreams. You might consider well-known locations like Texas Airstream Harbor on the shores of Lake Sam Rayburn, Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains, or Smuggler’s Den Campground in Maine, a family-owned spot with trails leading directly into Acadia National Park. You might mosey on down the road to The Vineyards on Lake Grapevine. Second, you should consider connecting with other Airstream aficionados. There are communities of owners that gather for events and rallies nationwide. You can visit online forums to discuss routes, upgrades, and repairs. With an Airstream, you’ve invested not only in the independence camping provides but also in an automatic support system, which makes the experience all the more memorable. Having an Airstream, in other words, is like choosing your own adventure. With people choosing to explore the great outdoors more every day, the demand for more options will continue to grow. THE ART "I wasn't even sure I could paint a full-sized mural," says Juan Velazquez, prolific Fort Worth muralist and oil painter. "I had $200 in my bank account, so I gave myself a week to either make it in the art world or take another office job." He wouldn't need a week. Velazquez nailed it. His first earnest foray into murals was a spray-painted memorial, blended like an oil painting in his signature style, to 20-year-old, Texas-born, United States Army soldier Vanessa Guillen. "I was in the military, so for me, she was my sister," says Velazquez about his first renowned piece. A local with a military background donated the wall to Velazquez, and the artist seized the opportunity without knowing if he'd sink or swim. This ability to 'get it done' has become the hallmark of Velazquez's work. "I was discouraged in art class," he says. "I had one teacher who stood up for me. They tried to say that my style was old, and nobody would like it. Well, I live off of my work now." And he does, for only being active a few years, Velazques has painted nearly 150 murals around Fort Worth (he's also known to surprise his fans on the road, knocking on doors to ask if he can paint something for them). Today, his work is an artistic road map of the city, one vibrant destination to the next. How many can you find?

Enchiladas Ole Fort Worth is owned and operated by Chef Mary Perez. I featured Mary on my LIVE show and CBS DFW for Dallas Fort Worth Today TV Show. She started the business when she was a single mother of three boys. Her father is from Mexico and her mother from Spain, so Perez grew up with the best of both worlds, learning how to cook from a traditional Mexican background as well as with an authentic Spanish flair. Her menu offers a beautiful combination of vibrantly colored dishes and big portions that are loaded with deliciousness. Second Stop: Thai - Vietnamese Deliciousness

Malai Kitchen Fort Worth offers a modern approach, combining Thai and Vietnamese cuisine prepared fresh to order. We took a ride over to the Malai Kitchen at The Shops at Clearfork. We found incredibly bright colors, big open spaces, a nice bar, various wines, and great service. They use colorful, farm-fresh ingredients combined with modern cooking to create big, bold flavors that are unforgettable. My favorite dishes are Malai Favorite Sampler and Drunken Noodles with the Coconut Curry Soup. OMG! That soup is LIFE CHANGING. Tre Mogli Fort Worth is Chef Stefon’s NEW Italian restaurant that is slinging fresh-prepared Italian cuisine. I featured Chef Stefon on MY LIVE show because of his dedication to the culinary arts. They use only fresh ingredients to create some bold, modern ItalianAmerican flavor profiles. Chef Stefon told me, “The last thing you’ll find at Tre Mogli is pasta from a bag or box. Every single shape we make is handmade in-house by our very own culinary team. We are SO proud to bring you from scratch Italian favorites.” The restaurant is warm and cozy, with an Italian vibe you will love. Its casual but vibrant atmosphere and their delicious, creative dishes make it one of the hottest spots in COWTOWN. Japanese Palace Fort Worth is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in North Texas and it was the first teppanyaki-style dining in Fort Worth. It’s still in operation today and I featured them on CBS DFW for Dallas Fort Worth Today TV Show. Here you can enjoy a unique dining experience, complete with traditional Japanese dishes and ice-cold sake, all while watching their talented teppanyaki chefs sling deliciousness. If it’s fresh sushi you love, you can sit at the sushi bar and enjoy some of the creative sushi dishes they offer. It’s a unique and fun experience for anyone, especially families. My favorite is the Emperor’s Dinner because It has everything you could ever need: an aged New York steak combined with buttery lobster, two savory shrimp flame-broiled in brandy, and a tempura appetizer.
