January 2023 PUBLISHER

Hannah Barricks | hannah.barricks@citylifestyle.com

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of West Fort Worth Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Dr. Stephen Newhart

Mental Health and Wellness In recent years, the number of people seeking screenings for their mental health increased by almost 500%. New generations are growing up and prioritizing their mental state more than their predecessors, with a new host of stressors and the pandemic spurring this change but also because of increased awareness and focus being placed on the mind by healthcare professionals. So, what is being learned about mental health? How can it be improved? Dr. Stephen Newhart, the owner of Vigor Active, a new gym concept in Fort Worth, sheds some light on the

mysteries of the mind and how to unlock a higher self. "Too often, people are not connecting their mental health with their overall well-being," says Newhart. "They go hand in hand." Since establishing his gym, Newhart has seen his clients benefit from exercise and wellness routines that have vastly improved their overall mental health, reduced depression and anxiety, improved sleep, and more. And his perspective is backed up by science. Exercise burns calories, helping a person avoid chronic illness and medications, a predominant factor

in depression as people age. It also improves motivation, leading to more success. "Exercise is a powerful tool for mental health," he affirms. "Exercise gives the brain the ability to work as one, in harmony with the body, by increasing blood flow to the multiple lobes of the brain and increasing their network connections." Increased blood flow to the brain allows it to be more creative in problem-solving and generalized thought; this all culminates in a positive life. Exercise also releases hormones that create a feeling of happiness. "We have observed this in our members," says Newhart. "And in anyone who regularly participates in exercises." Newhart explains that a recent study compared three groups of people suffering from depression. Professionals found that exercise alone was the optimal treatment over prescription medication or exercise with prescription medication. "Exercise reversed depression in that study group." The brain is the headquarters for all movement. When the brain regularly moves the body, the cerebral cortex increases its ability to perform complex tasks, improving the brain’s efficacy and efficiency in completing thoughts and movements. In short, the brain is like a muscle that has to be used to properly work and avoid atrophy. And rhythmic activities are also soothing to people, another reason why humans are drawn to music. The body and the brain are driven by frequency, and the cadence of exercise stabilizes the brain’s frequencies and coherence patterns. Personally, Newhart sees the science of exercise working miracles on his gym patrons every day, but he also sees it working in himself. "I am an entrepreneur and perform multiple different tasks daily," he says. "these tasks revolve around my fitness center, fundraising for my other company, and teaching my college courses." Newhart completes all this while still finding time for his wife and children. "I know this would not be possible without all types of regular exercise, including cardiovascular endurance training, resistance training, and plyometric training," he says. "I feel more

accomplished, self-satisfied, and generally joyful while regularly exercising." And Newhart feels lucky that he's always prioritized exercise, something his parents instilled in him from a young age. "My parents were active in gyms when I was young, and sports were always a part of my life," he says. "Even now, I work out at another fitness club outside of Vigor, to increase fitness variety." Newhart credits exercise with allowing him to be his best for his family and business. Without it, he says he would focus negative energy on poor food choices, alcohol, and other bad habits that are harmful long term. And when you decide to commit to a healthier lifestyle, the gym becomes a great place to meet kindred spirits experiencing happiness from hormone release; it is a caring environment, and a positive gym provides a community of trust on top of the physical results. "At Vigor Active, we have members utilizing the club since it opened five years ago," explains Newhart. "We have become a fitness family where we know the member's children, careers, and life's ups and downs." Newhart says the Vigor community will hold you accountable just as often as they build you up. But he sees clients thriving in that environment. His members enjoy working out because of these social interactions, and daily attendance at a gym provides the conversation and support all people need to avoid depression. As we age, socialization improves overall longevity and maintains mental well-being. Newhart encourages all people to invest more in their wellness routines, cautioning against picking the cheapest gyms. "Pick the best option," he urges. "One that cares about your outcomes and who you are." Once a healthy physical routine is established, a person should also edit their food choices. Foods that lead to chronic disease and obesity raise your dopamine levels at a chemical level. The biggest offenders are sugar, seed oils, and alcohol. Once these foods are ingested, the natural production of dopamine lowers, and feelings of

depression sneak in. So 'Sunday scaries' are a legitimate chemical reaction that worsens the more you partake in alcohol and processed foods. The good news is if someone wants to make a change, there are things they can do to immediately make an impact. Newhart suggests creating an exercise routine. "The rhythmic nature, increased body temperature, utilization of hormones, and usage of energy storage associated with exercise makes it the most effective means of improving all avenues of health." Just 20 minutes of exercise a day is effective at lifting the spirits. Even if a person solely focuses on raising their heart rate, a walk can make all the difference in how they manage their day afterward. Newhart suggests starting with a quick 20-minute walk around your neighborhood and biking or hiking to clear your mind, but each day needs to progress, walking faster or further, to see change mentally and physically. Set obtainable goals (hang photos in the mirror for daily motivation), Do not overtrain initially (don’t overdo it and start slowly), and educate yourself on slow controlled resistance training (the best way to continue to burn calories over time). Newhart says people should also stay offline and focus on an in-person community. Social media is scientifically proven to cause depression, as shown by many studies. "We were not meant to see into the lives of everyone on

24

the planet," says Newhart. "Especially when they are complete strangers." "People see what they do not have, and it causes them to falsely think they want what others have." This phenomenon creates an unhealthy environment for people psychologically. Newhart says participating in a live community and nurturing relationships nearby cultivates a positive atmosphere of mental well-being instead of constantly comparing, idolizing, or creating false realities. People should also research mental therapies like neurofeedback as well as traditional psychotherapy. Neurofeedback therapy re-directs subconscious desires and thoughts to create positive mental wellness. It also focuses on positive influences and future planning. And a person can never over-prioritize a good night of rest. "Sleep, Sleep, Sleep!" Encourages Newhart. "Get good sleep; 7-8 hours a day are essential for cell repair and for your mind to rest!" Optimal health includes avoiding negative relationships too. Newhart explains that people need cheerleaders and support in their lives. Avoid negative conversations and taking on the problems of others, especially when those problems produce fear and anxiety. "The smallest negative comment can become a ripple effect of only negative feelings," cautions Newhart. "Seek positivity in life. Re-frame your intentions and avoid gossip and drama."

Finding Financial Success in the New Year

Four facets of financial wellness

It is never too early to prepare for the future. And one of the most substantial stressors in planning for the future is money. This process can feel overwhelming, but it has never been more accessible to make long-term goals and stick to them. Olivia Partin, a financial planner from the Diesslin Group, Inc., spends nearly every day with people, young and old, helping them reach their financial goals. Over her years of experience, Partin has honed in on four distinctive components of financial wellness and how everyone can achieve the portfolio of their dreams. “When it comes to financial wellness,” explains Partin, “we discuss four main building blocks with our clients: estate, savings and investments, debt, and protection and insurance.” Each one is broken down into detail below. For more advice on this topic reach out to Diesslin Group - 817.332.6122.

26

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

Estate One of the first questions Partin asks prospective clients is if they have an estate plan. It is a natural reaction to want to avoid postmortem planning, but having a solid estate plan is crucial to overall financial wellness. Having a Last Will and Testament, as well as ancillary documents (durable power of attorney, medical power of attorney, etc.) are the main components of a well-established estate plan. “We have had numerous clients mention that the greatest gift their parents have given them is the tools and planning to settle their estate,” says Partin.

ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS

Protection and Insurance Protecting the assets a person has worked so hard to preserve is a substantial element of financial wellness. Adequate insurance coverage protects a family from unexpected emergencies or losses due to events outside of their control. “We recommend checking your coverages (property and casualty, auto, and health) annually to ensure you have enough coverage,” says Partin. “And make sure you are not overpaying for that coverage.”

Debt In this economic environment, paying off debt associated with credit cards can be a win-win situation. Consider the interest rate being paid as the return on investment. And reducing or eliminating debt can provide better financial and mental wellness. Using a snowball method to pay off debt can be both satisfying and motivating. “Removing debt from the financial picture not only relieves stress and worry,” says Partin, “but it also sets you up to have more funds available to invest in yourself or the market when the outlook eventually improves.”

Savings and Investments “Given the state of the markets this year, many clients are asking us where they should invest extra cash or proceeds from asset sales,” explains Partin. And unfortunately, the only safe answer is to park it in money market funds or short-term US Treasurys, but this is not a long-term solution. But she offers an alternative option, with a potentially higher return: pay off your debt.

Relax, Renew, Rejuvenate Miraval Austin’s Resort and Spa is the perfect retreat to heal mind, body, and spirit

ARTICLE BY CHRISTA EIXMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIRAVAL RESORT & SPA

Tucked away in the Hill Country, just north of Austin, Miraval Resort and Spa is one of the few all-inclusive resorts in Texas. Voted one of the best wellness retreats in the country, Miraval is just a short drive away! Meals, snacks, smoothies, and activities such as yoga, fitness classes, and outdoor challenges, are included. All of the food is made with fresh, natural ingredients, and Miraval’s Life in Balance Spa is second to none! After endless months of work, chores, notifications, and other distractions, I needed to reboot and was eager to check out Miraval for myself. My husband and I packed our bags, and were on our way. Upon arriving, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Miraval is more open-spaced

than other resorts. Their extensive campus is sprawled out, creating an atmosphere of quiet and serenity. Our room was private and luxurious, with a cozy reading nook overlooking the hill county. From our balcony, we could see miles of green as we gazed out at the rolling hills of the Balcones Canyonland Preserve. One of the highlights of the trip was our private culinary experience. Our personal chef prepared a delicious five course meal with unique seasonal flavors, and wine was perfectly paired with each dish. We started with a carrot hummus that was divine, followed by a vegan mushroom soup, both full of exquisite flavor. Appetizers were followed by a delicious seared trout, NY strip with fresh creamed spinach, and finished off with CONTINUED >

a perfectly tart, berry cheesecake. We ended the night with an evening stroll through the grounds on our way back to our room. In the mornings, we got our blood flowing with restorative yoga. Then, we indulged in some of the most amazing breakfasts ever. The savory chicken sausage and magnificent blueberry pancakes are a must try! The food is all fresh and the flavor is first class! Miraval sources all of their ingredients from local farms which you can even tour. Miraval’s Life in Balance Spa has won countless awards, and offers an extensive menu of spa services. The facilities were absolutely stunning - well designed, spacious, and deserving of the accolades. Not only is it peaceful and serene, but it has spectacular, panoramic views of Lake Travis! The spa facilities are available for guests to use at their leisure, even if a spa service is not on the itinerary. Other activities you can experience include horseback riding, ropes courses, archery, and several different types of meditation. We really enjoyed our invigorating morning hike, choosing one of the more adventurous trails. They also have an impressive, heated outdoor infinity pool overlooking the hill country. I recommend booking your activities well in advance, as they book up quickly. During our trip, masks were required inside, so be sure to check Miraval’s website for covid policy updates. After my stay at Miraval, I definitely felt relaxed, renewed, and rejuvenated and I'm sure you will too. Want to check out Miraval for yourself? Here is a list of some popular activities. • Rhythmic Riding - Practice rhythm and balance while riding horses to the sound of music. • Common Ground - Lead horses by learning the skill of non-verbal communication. • Floating Meditation - Enjoy a guided meditation while resting in a silk hammock. • Hatha Yin / Yang Yoga - Focus on strengthening and lengthening your muscles. • Hill Country Challenge Course - Test yourself walking on a ropes course high above the ground. • Swing and a Prayer - Swing from a cable 35 feet above the ground. • Art of the Cocktail - Find the right balance of sweet and sour with this hands-on class. • Just Cook for Me - Enjoy a chef's choice, private 5-course meal. The Benefits of Plant Based Eating Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure,

inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A Plant-based diet still allows to you consume the Carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a Vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy

and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1.

Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plants foods you already like.

2.

Plant based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to you vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies.

3.

Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste.

4.

Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A.

5.

If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possible an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin b12.

6.

A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits than can add years to your life.

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 40

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. “It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say. It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. The elegant and unique physique makes it an easy decision for everyone to appreciate. “The design passed the wife test—everyone was happy to have it! We appreciate aesthetics and design, that’s been a key piece. It fits with a beautiful home and we are proud of that.” CONTINUED >

“What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver.”

Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism. His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity. “It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three

42

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALTH + W E LLNE S S

minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. “A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.” The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. “One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
