The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. I know for me and my siblings my parents were incredible at making the holidays truly the most special time of year. Not only was this time magical as a kid but even as we have gotten older, married with kids of our own they have found a way to keep the traditions alive and make it just as amazing as it’s always been. This year as our first born is one and our second child will be here any day now I’ve realized it is now our turn to do what my parents always did for us. It’s our turn to create traditions and memories for our own family. I’ve reflected so much on what my parents did to make this time of year so special and have realized that all of it was them being extremely intentional with every detail from decorating the house, to making gingerbread houses, Christmas Eve pajamas, going to Christmas church services, giving to those in need, inviting those that didn’t have family to be with on Christmas day and so much more. As we embark on this journey as a family in creating traditions and memories of our own my goal is to be just as intentional as my parents have always been in making sure this time of year is truly special not just for our own family but for those all around us. Fort Worth is such an amazing place to live all the time but especially this time of year where creating traditions and memories can easily be done. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We also wanted to highlight Fort Worth businesses that so generously take time to make sure they are giving back all throughout the year with foundations that we can all be a part of. I encourage you this season to be intentional in creating traditions and memories of your own but also to remember those in need and how we can give back to those around us.

Shelby Whitfield A Fort Worth native who spent her childhood in Berlin, the modern architecture and materials from both cities have always inspired Shelby Whitfield, owner and principal designer at Modern Menagerie. She carried that love to Virginia, where she developed an equal appreciation for classical design during college. A fter earning her interior design degree, Whitfield returned to the Metroplex to train under nationally recognized design professionals from Dallas-Fort Worth. Her experience includes family home renovations in Preston Hollow and the Park Cities, estate homes in Westover Hills, and vacation homes throughout the country. Whitfield describes her design philosophy as a client-centered distillation of inspiration from her lived and professional experience. The holiday season is a special time. Nostalgia runs as deep as the stomachs, and in Fort Worth, it’s a time to finally enjoy the cooler weather, go shopping, and engage in family and local traditions. While celebrating, gift-giving, and entertaining, our homes become a busy place, hosting family and friends, parties, and events. But when the guests leave, the holiday home has double duty, becoming a comfy space for Hallmark movie marathons, listening to carols, or finishing the year’s reading list. Whitfield shares her top 4 tips to transition smoothly from a functional, hosting home to a fluffy sanctuary during this year’s Season of Joy.

L AY E R E D LIGHTING “Around the winter holidays, the glow of accent lighting is critical for creating a cozy refuge from the grey outdoors,” explains Whitfield. “Layer your lighting at different heights with table lamps, floor lamps, art lights, and seasonal string lights and candles to offer functional task lighting for snuggling up with a good book and ambient warmth.” “I like to use large indoor lights near natural light sources to mimic light entering the home during the day. I often use floor lamps near windows. Decorative lighting can be equally functional. Mini lamps are beautiful on a stack of books in a built-in, and adding the soft light near a TV can reduce eye fatigue during football’s late games or that movie marathon.”

COZY TEXTILES “Nothing beats a large blanket on a cold day, but go a step further and think about the fabric on your furniture,” says Whitfield. “It can add extra comfort over the holidays. Natural fibers, like wool, are breathable and insulating and feel warm when your family settles in on the sofa. Mixing up textures- using velvets and chunky knits adds visual interest and physical warmth.”

RICH SCENTS “Scents are closely tied to memories,” explains Whitfield. “For many of us, certain winter smells remind us of the childhood magic of the holidays. Pine and berry or winter citrus are rich scents that bring the atmosphere of the outdoors in, cueing seasonal joy. The flicker of a candle creates an additional layer of ambiance, but diffusers (either plug-in or wicking) are just as comforting and a little more kid-friendly.”

“Since our homes offer so much double duty during the holidays, change up your furniture layout,” Whitfield encourages. “Maybe tuck a small round table into a corner for card games or pull a pair of slipper chairs aside for intimate conversations during parties. Small side tables are a perfect holiday accessory because they are flexible, movable for different events, and can hold a favorite cocktail or hot drink.” No matter what the holiday season looks like for the residents of Fort Worth, ensure it includes some coziness with designer Whitfield’s out-of-the-box suggestions to create a manageable and comfortable holiday look.

DION LAMPE TOTA LC A R E E R As a faith-based company, TotalCare’s values compel the team to follow the compassionate example of Jesus Christ in providing high-quality care while going the extra mile to ensure that each patient receives genuine love and respect. “That’s why we choose to partner with our own 501(c)3 TotalCare Foundation,” says Lampe. “Through which our passion for patient care is multiplied both here locally, and around the world.” By partnering with the TotalCare Foundation, The staff and volunteers can live out the company values in many different ways. In North Texas, they have helped build homes and paint houses with Tarrant Habitat for Humanity. The Total administrative team, based in Lebanon, does medical missions for underserved populations of patients surrounding Beirut, including expecting mothers, children, and elderly people. The largest project of the TotalCare Foundation is a full-time mission clinic in Eldoret, Kenya offering primary care, immunizations, mother’s care, and cancer screening to patients six days a week, year-round. TotalCare Eldoret also hosts an annual medical camp for patients across the Rift Valley region, during which medical staff from TotalCare and our partners travel to Kenya to provide life-saving treatment and deliver much-needed supplies and equipment. The partnership between TotalCare in Fort Worth and the TotalCare Foundation is rooted in a shared commitment to faith-based values and a profound dedication to compassionate patient care. DAVID DIESSLIN DIESSLIN GROUP David Diesslin founded Diesslin Group, Inc (DGi) in 1980 as a financial planning company committed to serving as a fiduciary to its clients. For over 30 years, DGi grew into a successful firm under Diesslin’s leadership. However, Diesslin faced an immense personal tragedy in 2009 when his beloved wife, Deena, passed away after a battle with cancer. To honor Deena’s memory and continue her legacy of compassion, Diesslin established the Deena-Jo Heide Diesslin Foundation (DJHDF). The broad mission of the Foundation was to contribute to worthy causes across several areas of need. Over the past decade, the DJHD Foundation has donated millions in grants to nonprofits focused on Deena’s passions like education equity. Diesslin guides the Foundation’s Board and provides generous financial support each year. By creating the DJHD Foundation after his wife’s passing, Diesslin found a meaningful way to carry on her spirit of generosity and care for others. The Foundation is a testament to Deena and allows Diesslin to continue impacting the community causes she cared deeply about through his philanthropy. CONTINUED >

SARAH HARDY S A R A H H A R DY R E A L E S TAT E The Joan Katz Resource Center is an organization dedicated to supporting patients and families with female cancers. Hardy became intimately involved with the center’s cause after a deeply personal and painful experience supporting her mother through a late-stage ovarian and fallopian tube cancer diagnosis. Ultimately, her mother’s life was cut short. “Her case could have had a different outcome if the symptoms of the disease had been recognized earlier,” Hardy recounts painfully. The experience ignited her passion for educating women about the signs and symptoms of female cancers through early detection. Named after a resilient, three-time breast cancer survivor, the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center guides individuals with any cancer diagnosis, regardless of where they receive medical care, from the point of diagnosis into survivorship. All non-medical programming provided by the center is fully funded by philanthropic individuals, corporations, and foundations. Since the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center opened thirteen years ago, over 15,000 people have received non-medical support services through the center. For the past two years, staff from the non-profit have worked out of Hardy’s office the week leading up to the Susan G. Komen walk, allowing her to know the wonderful people who work at and volunteer for the center. Now, she participates in committees for upcoming fundraising events, raising nearly 3 million dollars from one event alone since its inception 13 years ago.

Black Dog Charity exists now to make a difference for those affected by Leukemia, Lymphoma, and other blood cancers. Winter has officially arrived in North Texas. You’re over the novelty of cozy clothes and fires, and you can’t quite remember what summer feels like (work with me here), so it might be time to consider an escape to a warm weather destination. The Riviera Maya is always a popular choice, but if you’re looking for a different vibe, perhaps a beautiful and historic city perched on the edge of a majestic landscape, Puerto Vallarta will check all your boxes. Surrounded by the Sierra Madre mountain range, Puerto Vallarta is a bustling city with different neighborhoods, all unique in their own right. Whether you want to lounge on the beach, wander the streets of Zona Romántica, eat your way through the day, or head for one of the more laid-back fishing villages nearby, all these options await. History buffs will want to make time for Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the stunning Catholic church in the heart of town. It’s a short walk off El Malecón, the beach boardwalk that meanders along the edge

of ocean and land. Listen to the bells chime 30 and 15 minutes before each mass, enter the church to look at the artwork, and admire the architecture. Those looking for scenic beauty should check out La Cruz del Cerro, the lookout with stunning views of the city and the entire Bay of Banderas. Another good option is a visit to the Vallarta Botanical Garden. Recently designated a Protected Natural Area, this green space spans over 120 hectares (nearly 300 acres) and is home to Mexican native plants. It is also home to several endangered species, like the military macaw. If a hike is what you crave, be sure to check out the trail from Las Bocas to Las Animas. It’s a two-hour trek with a blend of ocean views and lush vegetation from one end to the other, and it’s a perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon. For those who love to shop, traversing Olas Altas, the famous shopping street in the Zona Romántica is a must. Also known as the main street of Old Puerto

Vallarta, it starts at the south end of El Malecón and ends at Pilitas Street. Here’s where you’ll find local vendors beckoning with artisan-made goods, a farmer’s market in Tile Park offering fresh cheese and pasta and local dishes, and plenty of fashion boutiques. Where are my foodies?! You’re in for a real treat when it comes to the gastronomical offerings in Puerto Vallarta. Not only can you choose from restaurants serving the best local fare, but you can reserve a food tour of the city where you can eat all the street tacos (also known as the arriero) your heart desires. A meal at Restaurant Fernando is a must if you’re craving the best pescado zarandeado (fresh fish smoked with a smoky adobo rub) and if you’re looking for a proper cendaduria to dine on corn-based delicacies like pozole, tamales, and enchiladas, head for Cenaduria Tia Anita in the El Pitillal neighborhood. If you want to have someone plan for you, consider booking a food tour. That way, you’ll get a bit of everything all organized in advance. Vallarta Food Tours offers different packages, depending on your taste buds. Three that top the list are The Street, a 3-hour street taco adventure, The Original Downtown Tour, which gives you a taste of Old Town, and the Seafood Lovers Tour, which includes fresh ceviche, fried octopus, grilled calamari, aquachile, tostadas, and more. Of course, when visiting Puerto Vallarta, one of the trickiest decisions will be deciding where you’ll soak up some sun. There are so many stretches of sand that it’ll be up to you to decide what type of experience you want. For a bustling beach scene, head for Playa Camarones, where there are several beach clubs, water sports rentals, and vendors for umbrellas. If you’re up to visit one of the nearby fishing villages, Mismaloya is a good choice. Just 15 miles south of Puerto Vallarta, it has a laid-back vibe and boasts emerald waters and

lush vegetation. For a more private beach experience, go to Colomitos Beach, where the water is perfect for snorkeling. If you’re feeling up to it, hike in on the trail that starts at Boca de Tomatlán. Los Muertos Beach & Pier is also a must-visit, and it’s located right in Puerto Vallarta. Admire the pier and the boats that come in and out of the bay. There are any number of resorts and hotels to choose from; some of my favorites include Velas Vallarta for a family friendly all-inclusive resort, the Suites at Sapphire Ocean Club for its location in the heart of Zona Romántica, Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway for an adults-only trip, and the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit as the best overall all-inclusive resort near Puerto Vallarta. Getting to Puerto Vallarta is easy, too. The main airport is just five minutes from the marina and only 30 minutes from downtown, making getting from Spot A to Spot B easy. It’s no wonder this Mexican city in Jalisco is on bucket lists, tops “best of” lists, and is, quite simply, an experience you shouldn’t miss.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Tex is active in Young Life and attends Christ Chapel. He is the President of an athlete-led bible study at Paschal. Tex loves outdoor activities including hunting, snowboarding and wake surfing. Tex also practices Jiu Jitsu. He is a member of the National Honor Society and likes to travel which helps him experience history and art.

Maintaining Balance with Sports and School

Tex grew up watching his older brother and sister, Cruz and Bella, compete in five different sports in high school while they excelled academically. Cruz went on to play baseball in college and both Cruz and Bella earned great jobs after completing their business degrees, showing Tex the value good education provides for the long run.

Plans for the Future

Tex would love to play football at the next level at an Ivy League or Patriot League school and obtain a business degree. Tex plans to work in private equity and hopes to start his own business at some point.
