Of the five senses, sight is the one humans rely on the most. So much of our daily lives revolve around visual stimulation, but we don’t always realize how important our eyesight is until it changes or starts to fail. Having an eye doctor you trust is important because whether it’s astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, or something more serious, knowing a provider is knowledgeable and has cutting-edge technology can help ease medical worries. It’s true when they say time flies. One moment, we look to our parents and grandparents for help and support, and the next, they are the ones who need our attention and care. While we should be grateful for their wisdom and experience, older generations often go by the wayside. If there’s anything we can improve upon in this life, it’s the effort we put into supporting and spending

time with the elderly community. They’ve witnessed things we only read about in history books; they learned the skill before there were YouTube videos. That’s one of the reasons Will and Selene Chaudhry, owners of Fort Worth Caring Senior Service, have a passion for supporting the elderly community. They both always wanted to work in the

medical field, but caring for their parents set them on the path to elderly care. They’ve seen how seniors can play a pinnacle role in shaping future generations. “Every single senior has something to teach the younger generation. They are our past. life. They have experience. They might not be able to do what they used to, but they can explain things or show us an easier way to do things,” says Chaudhry. One of his best memories is getting a lesson in BBQ from a 96-year-old client. It came up in conversation that Will was researching the best way to grill chicken. His client gave him a lesson right then and there, and Will says, “It was so simple, but it made a long-term difference for me.” While we’re busy with work, kids, and social engagements, we often forget or don’t realize senior citizens don’t have the same opportunities to visit with younger people. And yet, the tiniest interaction can make or break a day for seniors. In his work, Chaudhry sees this firsthand. “Take a couple of minutes and visit the elderly. That makes a big impact. Even if this person is not related to you—just say hi. It makes their day,” he says.

Fort Worth Caring Senior Service is all about making someone’s day. They offer services like companionship, light housekeeping, cooking, running errands, attending medical appointments, and other means of support that are just as important as medical care. This season, homeowners are sprucing up their garage doors as new design options hit the market. And with garage upgrades retaining their value, more people are willing to invest the money. So, what’s best for your house? Gayla Henderson of Prolift Garage Doors in Fort Worth, Texas, shares the newest available products, design tips, and long-term maintenance requirements for your dream garage. “A popular, high-end door right now is a metal door with a wood overlay, so it has no maintenance,” says Henderson. “It comes in a standard white or almond color, but customers can order the door in any SherwinWilliams paint color because of our ongoing partnership with them.” Prolift’s Classica door can come in two tones, creating a barn door effect for customers with modern farmhouse-style or traditional homes. Besides paint, windows can be added to all of Prolift’s garage doors. “The windows won’t heat the garage, necessarily, if you get a standard window. You can get a single pane, double pane, or insulated glass. It depends on whether you want to regulate the room’s temperature.”

Homeowners with HOAs should check their community guidelines for any rules regarding windows. Oftentimes, if a garage faces the street, the homeowner’s association will require windows. People interested in glass doors can also explore full-view garage doors, which are completely made from glass and available in different glass types. Customers can tint the windows and reduce glare depending on what they need from the space and what their homes look like. Ideas for full-glass doors include turning a garage into a gym, spa room, or a space for car collectors. “Full glass brings the outdoors in and the indoors out,” says Henderson. “It’s also really popular at restaurants or any social place.” You can also get a metal door painted like real wood with decorative hardware. “Black dots, handles, hinges, and hardware can be screwed in or magnetically attached to the garage for decoration,” explains Henderson. “That’s more of a contemporary look.” And when customers opt for flushed door panels without any raised parts, recesses, or texture it produces a more contemporary look. “Contemporary is usually clean and CONTINUED >

just painted,” she affirms. “You can choose the color you want the door painted and the kind of wood to match it to, like mahogany or walnut.” Wood finishes are popular right now because everyone wants a wood-looking door without the heaviness or the maintenance of sealing it every few months. “Another modern thing people are doing is all black doors,” says Henderson. “But you don’t want to have a black door facing the evening sun. It has a great warranty, but black doors can bubble under the heat.” The last door type Henderson shares is more unusual, called a slat door. The slats are one to two inches thick, and it looks like a roll-up door, but it’s not. “It’s also more modern and minimalist,” says Henderson. “For someone who doesn’t want any texture on anything.” People who have multipurpose garages, like a shop, or who host a lot of social events and neighborhood gatherings will gravitate towards this type of door. And customers can add a screen to the inside of the door. “They won’t have to deal with all the bugs or issues outside,” says Henderson about adding a screen. “It’s mounted on the inside of the garage door with a pedestrian door. It’s a great way to keep pets and kids safe.” The screens are customizable to allow for total airflow in the space or total privacy. But, no matter what you choose, make sure you stay up to date on your garage door maintenance. “People don’t necessarily know that garage doors, like everything else, need to be maintained and looked at twice a year in the spring and the fall,” adds Henderson. “When temperatures change, you get stress fractures happening to the springs. Believe me, a broken spring never happens at a convenient time. Check if there are maintenance packages available for your doors upon purchase.”

FORT WORTH’S QUINTESSENTIAL CITY CLUB IS READY FOR A NEW ERA. ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHET BELL PHOTOGRAPHY

The mirrored elevator doors open, revealing the 40th floor of the 777 Main Street Skyscraper in Fort Worth. The floor is the current home of the Petroleum Club, a Fort Worth institution where ranchers and roughnecks rubbed elbows with notable guests like Elvia Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Stewart and the Bush Presidents, before paying respects to the Golden Goddess statue for luckand heading out west to the oilfield. A plaque of club members, affiliated organizations, and societies hangs to the left of the elevator in recognition of those who donated to the club’s last renovation project in 2010. The interior of the club is as rich as its history, a mix of deep, marbled woods and glass-veiled views of the city skyline. Not far away is the club’s old home, the Blackstone Hotel off Fifth Street, where it gained a charter in 1953 limiting them to oil and gas-affiliated members. “It was formed to be a networking hub for people in oil and gas,” explains the club’s general manager Steve Till. “There are fourteen or so Petroleum Clubs in the country, but we aren’t affiliated with them other than by name and purpose.”

Today, the energy industry has changed, becoming more inclusive as alternative sources of power have emerged and gained traction. Eventually, the Petroleum Club would also morph to fit a broader demographic, but more has changed than just the energy sources since 1953, society and American culture have too. “City clubs, specifically meaning dining and social networking clubs, are a 501 C7 business model with unique challenges, changes in work place protocol, face to face business climate now facetime and zoom calls; the ongoing corporate migration in and out of the downtown markets “ explains Till. “Many members having multiple clubs, its comes to a reset of priorities. We had to rethink our model and adopted bylaws that allowed new people to join,” says Till. “Right now, we are about 60% oil and gas members, and 40% everything else you can imagine.” The club’s board members remain predominantly employed in the oil and gas industry.“We think it’s cool to stay rooted in oil, but we wanted to be more inclusive. that if you aren’t in the oil and gas industry you can’t join.” To combat old perceptions of the club, the board decided to beef up its accessibility online, broaden amenities, and organize social events and entertainment with reciprocal clubs in other cities for traveling or commuting members. Amenities intrinsic to the club’s Main Street location and fortieth-floor height include breathtaking views of Downtown Fort Worth. “What we have that nobody else has is our view,” affirms Till. “It’s breathtaking during the day but more so at night. The Skyline Room faces the sunset and overlooks Fort Worth Sundance Square and the Trinity River. The cigar patio looks towards Dallas and on a clear day, you can see the Dallas skyline.” Till explains that the club takes full advantage of its location whenever possible and describes how members enjoy the Trinity Park Fourth of July fireworks show at eye level. Other perks for members include a wine room and locker, access to an outdoor space and cigar lounge, dining halls, and bars, with a private chef on staff. “Our liquor license allows us to serve liquor to-go,” laughs Till. “And we are always looking for ways to serve our downtown clients, so we sell roadies during festivals and events downtown, and food delivery.” The club also just hosted a Johnny Cash tribute show and is preparing for a Neil Diamond show. “We do a Good Fellas night because I’m from the northeast,” he adds. “So, we throw a lot of events and holiday specials to create a fun and exciting environment.” Interested Fort Worthians can also join a networking society affiliated with the club that focuses on connecting members to the energy, medical, and government defense industries with three lavish events a year.

The club is affiliated with many outside societies, most notably the Wildcatters Society, whose members helped the Petroleum Club raise donations for its most recent club upgrades. “We are looking to remodel again in the next year and a half,” says Till. “To expand the climate-controlled indoor/outdoor spaces and give our members a different bar experience by expanding the current one to 20 seats and situating it in front of a killer view.” Also on the horizon is a possible shout-out in the newest Taylor Sheridan project, “Landman.” “We are a part of Fort Worth culture,” says Till. “We are stewards of its history and in the complex world we live in, there’s a place for us here and our mix of nostalgia and modernity.”

They can be included in both sweet and savory dishes and are delicious and incredibly healthful. We all have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While they aren’t a cureall, apples are packed full of polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin C, B vitamins and fiber. Make the most of autumn’s best produce and the flavors of fall with these simple recipes.

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

A PPLE GA LE T TE WITH C AR AMEL DRIZ ZLE Easier than pie but with all the same textures, this gooey warm dessert is sure to please. For simplicity, this can be made with a premade crust. ING REDIENTS:

Crust: • 1 1/2 cups flour • 1/4 cup sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed • 1/4 cup iced cold water Filling: • 2 apples, peeled and sliced into thin slices • 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar • 1 1/2 tablespoons flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • Caramel sauce • Optional: 1/4 chopped walnuts or pecans

INSTRUCTIONS:

Crust: (Note: If running short on time, store bought crust works great, too.) Mix flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter. Add water and mix until moistened. Lightly knead the dough and then form into a ball. Next, flatten dough into a thick circular form and refrigerate for one hour. Filling: Mix the apples, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar together in a bowl. Assemble and Bake: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into a circle and set on parchment paper. Arrange apples in center of dough, leaving about one inch of space for the edges. Fold crust over the apples and press to seal edges. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with pecans or walnuts. Bake for 35 minutes. Serve with caramel sauce and ice cream.

ELE VATED G RILLED CH EESE This take on the classic grilled cheese is sure to satisfy your fall cravings. With the combined flavors of savory and sweet, it packs a punch for your taste buds. ING REDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1/4 red onion, sliced 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon olive oil Sliced sourdough bread 1-2 tablespoons butter 4 ounces Brie, sliced Fig jam, or preferred choice of jam 1 Granny Smith apple, sliced Arugula Thinly sliced ham, optional

Heat olive oil in the skillet and add sliced onions. Cook for a few minutes and then add brown sugar. Sauté until soft. Set aside. Butter the outside of the sourdough bread. Next, spread jam on the inside of both slices. Add cheese, apples, onions and arugula. If using meat, add as well. Top with slice of bread and grill on skillet until both sides are toasted and cheese is melted. Serve and enjoy!

A PPLE CHUTN E Y This Indian-inspired dish is the perfect fall topping for pork chops and also pairs nicely with ham. This is so easy to make and will fill your kitchen with the aroma of fall. ING REDIENTS:

Heat butter in saucepan, then add remaining ingredients. Cook over medium heat until the sauce has cooked down and the apples are tender. Serve over pork chops. Enjoy!

Filling: • 6-8 apples, peeled and sliced • ½ cup dark brown sugar • ¼ cup flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • ½ teaspoon nutmeg Topping: • ¾ cup flour • ¾ cup dark brown sugar • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • ½ cup cold butter cubed • 1 cup oats • ¼ cup pecans, chopped

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease pie plate or baking dish. Mix all filling ingredients together and place in baking dish. Prepare topping by combining the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut in butter using a fork or pastry cutter. Stir in oats and pecans and sprinkle over filling until covered. Bake for 45 minutes and serve with caramel drizzle and vanilla ice cream.

Apple cider (hot or cold) 1 ½ ounce bourbon or whiskey ½ ounce honey ½ ounce lemon juice Cinnamon Apple slice

Add all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake. Serve over ice and garnish with cinnamon stick and apple slice. Enjoy!

BA KED A PPLES Baked apples is a great fall side dish or can also be the perfect appetizer to share with others. This dish is surprisingly savory, is simple to make and looks impressive. ING REDIENTS:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice apples in half and remove the core. Set aside. Heat skillet and melt butter. Add brown sugar and lightly stir. Place apples face down in the skillet and add apple juice and a sprig of rosemary. Allow apples to cook on stovetop for 5-10 minutes. Flip apples over and top with Brie, chopped walnuts and chopped rosemary. Bake for 6-7 minutes or until the Brie is melted. This is best served warm and is easy to reheat. Enjoy!
