LIFESTYLE LETTER

Supporting Local

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Hunter Martinez | hunter.martinez@citylifestyle.com AD DESIGNER

Matthew Endersbe

Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about unique products, makers and artists. As you read about a few artisans and business owners who pursue their passions, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

The Company Bringing Healthcare

To Texas ARTICLE BY

GABBY CULLEN

and Beyond

17 years ago, three brothers had a vision of bringing a faith-based health care company to North Texas. What started as a small clinic in Joshua has grown to include seven Emergency Rooms, five Urgent Care primary care centers, one outpatient behavioral health center and one non-profit clinic. When you use their health care services, you aren’t just getting quality care, but you’re helping the company give back. TotalCare is a Christian-based health care company with over 500+ employees on three different continents. Dion Lampe, the Sr. Director for Community Liaisons, tells us a bit more about the message and goals of the company. “TotalCare is a different kind of health care company,” says Lampe. “We put our patients first; we are proactive in our faith and infuse it into every aspect of the company. The passion of the owners about creating a better world—you hear it all the time at other places, but you don’t always see it. At TotalCare, we want to leave a footprint of helping. That’s just a little glimpse into the kind of company we want to be.”

This ideology especially shines when looking at their goal to open a non-profit clinic for every profit clinic they operate. The first one in Eldoret, Kenya, opened in late 2020. In August 2021, TotalCare took a mission trip to the clinic. They brought 13 suitcases filled with medical supplies, a fetal monitor, and most importantly, a medical-grade sonogram. Most Kenyans are unable to access basic health care services like bone density tests and medicine, and pregnant mothers are especially at risk. Currently, one in four infants do not survive birth, one in six mothers do not survive labor, and there are only four sonograms in all of Kenya. This is why, for Dion and his teammates, their visit to the clinic was extraordinary. The first walk-up patient was a young pregnant woman. Three of her four previous pregnancies hadn’t turned out well, and this time, just a few weeks away from delivery, she was able to see her healthy baby and hear its heartbeat for the first time. “It was a God thing for us,” says Lampe. “This project was two to three years in the making,” he says. “We combined forces with Deliverance Church (TotalCare is in partnership with the church, and the clinic sits on the church campus in Eldoret), along with local physicians and medical students, to bring these much-needed health services to the community.” The team from TotalCare saw 598 patients during the days they were at the clinic. What happens now that the team is back in North Texas? More good things. The non-profit clinic is thriving, having gone from two to three patient visits a day to eight to 10. It employs five full-time medical care professionals, including one physician. In addition, physicians from the medical school volunteer their time, which gives the clinic the resources to visit communities that are unable to reach the clinic. TotalCare has created a foundation, the TotalCare Foundation, and they can now accept donations for future non-profit centers. There are future mission trips planned, and a visit from the staff at the Eldoret clinic is in the works for this year. “We might be a for-profit company,” said Dion, but in reality, we are there to make a profit so we can push more non-profits into the world.” To find out more about TotalCare visit www.totalcare.us.

BLAZING A TRAIL IN BUSINESS THREE BUSINESSES LEAD FORT WORTH INTO THE FUTURE WITH THEIR INNOVATIVE, NEW PRACTICES.

ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHANTELLE MARIE

Fort Worth Businesses are restyling the wheel and it’s about time you hear about it. Fueled by passion, local business owners and entrepreneurs are reshaping their industry’s standards, all to the consumer’s benefit. Whether it’s a new product that will revolutionize the field or an attitude toward customer service that seems lost in today’s world, you can bet that these individuals are working on it.

E VA N PERKINS OWNER AND ORTHODONTIST AT: Perkins Orthodontics 1. WHAT’S SOMETHING INNOVATIVE/UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? We are the sole provider of Inbrace in Fort Worth. Inbrace is braces on the inside of the teeth - which are more esthetic than clear aligners. 2. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? My passions in life are: God, my family, and orthodontics. I have known I wanted to be an orthodontist since I was 11 years old and I strive to treat my patients with the utmost respect and care. I have always had a passion for wanting to help people and what better way than to bring confidence to someone’s life by giving them an awesome new smile! 3. WHAT CAN A CLIENT EXPECT BY WORKING WITH YOU? We treat everyone in our office like family and we strive to provide our patients with individualized treatment that best fits their unique needs and goals. 4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN FORT WORTH? I love the people and community of Fort Worth. Authenticity in relationships is very important to me and I love being able to get to know my patients. At Perkins Orthodontics we strive to be the best part of peoples days when they come to see us and they equally provide that joy to our office. The Fort Worth community is so supportive and I couldn’t ask to practice in a better city.

MELISSA CALDRERELLI OWNER OF: Sound Waves Mindful Meditation 1. WHAT’S SOMETHING INNOVATIVE/UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? Even though we offer Halotherapy for respiratory and skin health; infrared saunas for muscles, joints, detoxification, and salt massage; what is really unique about Sound Waves Mindful Meditation is the vibroacoustic therapy bed. Vibroacoustic therapy provides healing through the incorporation of Therapeutic music, biofeedback, guided imagery, and vibroacoustic massage. Although Vibroacoustic therapy has been around since the 80s, this particular bed has been used only by the medical community; we are the first to offer it to the public. 2. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? I started this business because I have had friends and family members who have suffered from depression, and I struggled with anxiety and panic attacks in my early 20s. I was prescribed medication; I didn’t feel that it helped (in fact, made it worse), so that’s when I started meditating; I am blessed that I have the opportunity to share our offerings with those who are stressed before they get to the point of needing medication. It is essential to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to our health. 3. WHAT CAN A CLIENT EXPECT BY WORKING WITH YOU? Clients start with a complimentary consultation so we can understand their needs. Once they have decided on the service, we practice breathing techniques; clients will walk away with a few tools to help maintain and stay centered. Of course, some clients may choose not to meditate, and that’s fine too. Regardless of the reason, our clients can expect to leave calm and relaxed. 4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN FORT WORTH? The people, of course! When looking at spaces and talking to surrounding businesses, we met so many lovely people that had wonderful things to say about their clients that we just felt this would be the perfect place to be. Since then, people have come in to say, “hi” and wish us the best.

ANDREW BRADFIELD OWNER OF: Bradfield Designs 1. WHAT’S SOMETHING INNOVATIVE/UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? One unique thing Bradfield Designs does is take wood that would otherwise be thrown away, left to rot, or used for firewood, and turn it into a beautiful piece of furniture, art, bowl or cutting board. 2. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? I love cycling and as I ride my bike I often find trees that have been cut down and ready for me to rescue. 3. WHAT CAN A CLIENT EXPECT BY WORKING WITH YOU? The best part about custom furniture is getting exactly what you want. If you want a console table that is 103 inches long and 36 inches tall, that is what you get, knowing that your piece is handmade with no other duplicate like it in the world. 4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOING BUSINESS IN FORT WORTH? Fort Worth is renowned for its support of small, local artists and businesses; we all support each other. And the people. Lots of nice people.

A LOCAL DISTILLERY

MAKING MORE THAN JUST MOONSHINE History, friends, family and unforgettable memories abound at Sledge Distillery

ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY NANCY FARRAR PHOTOGRAPHY

24

H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

“What we’re doing is unique. We aren’t trying to see how much we make, but how good we can make it.”

Sledge Distillery is the vision of Mark and Susan Sledge and their lifelong friend Gary Cooper. Located on a 155-acre working ranch in Tolar, it opened to the public on November 7th, 2018. They offer over eight types of spirits, including pecan, peach, cranberry, gin, bourbon and even a hatch pepper moonshine. In a few short years, Sledge has become a top getaway destination for DFW residents. Why? It’s not just the moonshine or the appealing way to spend a Saturday, but it’s also about the story behind the business that’s rich in family history. Mark Sledge couldn’t have foreseen how a fishing trip would change the trajectory of his life. But, on that fateful day on Lake Grandbury, his father Dub began to speak of his experience in World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific, and to secure travel between the islands to compete in basketball and baseball games, he made moonshine to trade. Having grown up watching his family make it, he had the skills, but he had to improvise, using 50-gallon drums and kitchen scraps. Dub didn’t speak about the war often or about making moonshine with his family on Fall Creek, so Mark had never heard the story, and he was instantly intrigued. When Dub passed away, Mark was looking through an old cedar chest and found it filled with war memorabilia. He found the moonshine recipe Dub had created, and with Gary, bought a still and started experimenting with it on his back porch. Over time, word spread amongst friends and community members as to the quality of the product, and so Mark, Susan and Gary decided to take it further. They aren’t a traditional distillery, though. Sledge operates with two 50-gallon and one 80-gallon copper still. They are present for every cut and distill by smell, touch and taste. “What we’re doing is unique,” says Mark. “We aren’t trying to see how much we make, but how good we can make it.” CONTINUED >

“It’s a place for people to see things they might not normally see, a place to get away for awhile.”

Mark and Gary are always trying something new. They use seasonal ingredients and unusual flavor combos that might surprise you. “We have a variety because when people come out, no matter what they like, we want to have something for everybody,” says Gary. For example, their latest label is a fresh pear moonshine that’s been a real hit with customers. There are 20-22 people who help out on the property every Saturday, all of whom are friends and neighbors. They do it for fun, to be a part of something and to share Sledge with the world. Their motto “Come as Friends, Leave as Family” rings true. The distillery is a labor of love for Susan, Mark and Gary. “We do this because we want to. Everyone that works here has day jobs, and they volunteer their time on Saturdays because they want to be with the people they love. We want to live life to the fullest. We look at this as a hobby, and we love it when people come to hang out with us.” What does a Saturday (or, as Susan calls it, a hootenanny) at Sledge Distillery look like? You’ll spend the day visiting with farm animals, taking a tour of the distillery, playing lawn games, relaxing in a rocker on the porch, grabbing a bite from a food truck (soon they’ll be offering pizza!), listening to live music, getting warm by a fire pit, and spending time in an 1897 Santa Fe rail car. You can wander through the store and stock up on items like tickle-pickles, drunken cherries, apricot jam with bourbon, salsa with moonshine, candles and even infused cigars. This is also where you’ll be able to pick up bottles of your favorite moonshine to take with you. Besides all of these things to see and experience, another reason why people have begun coming to the ranch is the featured and special events. Think whiskey bottle painting, dance lessons, costume parties and much more. “It’s a place for people to see things they might not normally see, a place to get away for a while,” says Mark.
