LIFESTYLE LETTER
Thankful
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Hunter Martinez | hunter.martinez@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Hannah Barricks | hannah.barricks@citylifestyle.com
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. “He who is not contended with what he has, would not be contended with what he would like to have” - Socrates. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Blessings to you and your family,

VIGOR ACTIVE
Thanksgiving is synonymous with indulgence but in the best kind of way. Holidays mean more family than usual, more libation, more music, and more food. Seemingly lacking every year, however, is an abundance of movement. Vigor Active in downtown Fort Worth has been helping people move since 2018. Owners Stephen Newhart, Ph.D., and his wife Ashley created a culture of team members and clients loyal to their business. And after 20 years in the fitness world, Stephen remains focused on helping people through activity and wellness education. "Far too often, exercise is just thrown together," explains Newhart, stressing the importance of understanding your anatomy and trusting informed professionals to train your body correctly. And with the team members at Vigor holding multiple certifications in fitness, they are the perfect experts to advise Fort Worth on the best ways to master the holiday hangover this Thanksgiving season. The biggest hurdle, says Newhart, "don't stop the routine you've built. Continue to set time aside as your wellness
priority, and don't lose your good habits." Easier said than done, but prioritizing yourself during the holidays is essential for feeling your best. Even starting a new regime is a good idea. "If you start a new exercise routine during a difficult time over the holidays, you are much more likely to stay on track and committed throughout the year." But the key, Newhart stresses, is not overdoing it. A manageable routine is one you can fully commit to and won't mind doing. If it helps, get your family in on the fun! Many of us host our families or stay with them during the holidays, so why not work out together? "A good accountability partner will say, 'come on, let's go for a walk, you'll feel better after.'," explains Newhart, and on the days you can't muster the energy, simply getting outside to breathe can become an essential stress reliever. But when you need an extra boost, try the three workouts provided by the professionals at Vigor Active. There might be something you can't live without! What
thankfulness
means to us!
West Fort Worth Lifestyle is so blessed to have an amazing team that helps put together a beautiful publication every month for the community of Fort Worth. None of this would be possible without the hard work that each of them pour into this magazine behind the scenes. With our November issue focussing on thankfulness, we wanted to highlight some of the people that we are most thankful for. Our hope is that their openness will inspire all to focus on what’s really important and to live lives of thankfulness.

HOW DO YOU STAY THANKFUL IN HARD TIMES? Staying present and centered in the current moment always helps me to feel more thankful. I struggle not to anxiously live in the future or relive the past. When I lose my way in the bustle of life, journaling, positive affirmations, and yoga always bring me back to the present moment.
WHAT DOES THANKFULNESS MEAN TO YOU? Being thankful is accepting God’s gifts. I understand life isn’t perfect, but if I quiet my mind and stay present, I can find gratefulness in God’s plan and the simple everyday moments.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? Family means everything to my husband and me. Our families give us the gift of witnessing our lives. And while Friendships are important, throughout life, you begin to experience them benignly come and go. In the end, my family will be there, and I’m so thankful for them.
Nancy Farrar Photographer
HOW DO YOU STAY THANKFUL IN HARD TIMES? No matter what’s happening, I try to look on the good things in my life. I remember that whatever the trouble is, it will be temporary, and that issues that arise in life are really opportunities to learn. I try to visualize how things will be when the issue passes. I believe our thoughts become things, which means we are creating our reality each day. I’m an eternal optimist and that’s been a very helpful trait throughout my life.
WHAT DOES THANKFULNESS MEAN TO YOU? Thankfulness means having gratitude for all the events of our life.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? I’m thankful for the insight of age. The beautiful Fall light that comes through the windows at this time of year. And the joys of family and friends.

HOW DO YOU STAY THANKFUL IN HARD TIMES? In hard times, I first try allowing myself to experience/validate those not so fun feelings that come with struggling. (I find if I don’t do this first, part two isn’t very effective) Then, I reframe the situation with questions like: What do I have/who am I now that past me would have been SO grateful for? Who do I have in my world that makes life better? Etc.
WHAT DOES THANKFULNESS MEAN TO YOU? For me, thankfulness is all about perspective. It means choosing to focus more of my mental energy on gratitude over the things in life that bog me down…which often isn’t easy!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? I’m most thankful for my health & the relationships I’ve fostered over the years! (This includes relationships with my family, friends, clients, God & with myself) I’ve experienced first-hand how difficult being in poor health, mentally and physically, can be. After working hard to find the root cause of my health issues and getting it in check once again, it’s given me new found gratitude for even the smallest daily life things I used to take for granted!

Gabrielle Cullen Writer
HOW DO YOU STAY THANKFUL IN HARD TIMES? When it seems like the world is throwing everything it has at me, I try to take it hour by hour, day by day. I might not be able to control what happens tomorrow, next week, or next month, but I can control “right now” and by doing that, I can stay in the present. I think being present in life forces you to look at what’s in front of you, at what you have at this moment. It crowds out all the other worries or challenges.
WHAT DOES THANKFULNESS MEAN TO YOU? Thankfulness means knowing from the heart what I’ve been given in life. I find myself having to remind myself to do this constantly (especially when I give in to scrolling my Instagram feed)! It also means
being able to tell those closest to me how much they mean. You never know when someone will be gone, so being able to express gratitude for them is something that never goes out of style.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? I’m most thankful for my kids. Life goes by so fast. Honestly, it feels like they were toddlers yesterday, but now they are in grade school and middle school, discovering their passions and making friends. I’m so proud of the people they are becoming, and I’m thankful that they still come to me for hugs, want to tell me about their day, and hang out with me on the weekends. Being a parent is a lifelong journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

One Safe Place in Fort Worth devotes itself to caring for others
For any community to thrive it needs a heart. But what if the heart endures abuse and trauma? For Felipe Gutierrez, Vice President of the non-profit One Safe Place, broken hearts are far too common. Still, he believes like-minded individuals can band together and heal a community and take the necessary steps to move forward. One Safe Place, originally the Safe City Commission in 2005, is a comprehensive crime prevention agency devoted to preventing

crime and violence in Tarrant County’s neighborhoods, schools, and homes. The organization was formed by several of Fort Worth’s most prominent business leaders in partnership with federal, state, and local law enforcement officials to reduce violent crime in their communities. “Our goals include reducing incidents of violent crime, particularly gun crime,” says Gutierrez. “And preventing repeat incidents, the escalation of domestic violence, reversing the impact of trauma for children who have witnessed violence… and spreading a culture of nonviolence, particularly among our youth.” Overall, the main objective at One Safe Place is achieving zero domestic violence-related homicides for one year in Tarrant County, something the team strives for every day. To reach their goal, they rely on a multi-agency network, all funneling to the Family Justice Center which provides coordinated services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Gutierrez says the collaborative model is an exceedingly successful tool for their work. Research is a key component in the effectiveness of the organization. In 2009, One Safe Place added youth mentorship and intervention services to its programming after a 2008 focus group in Fort Worth found a connection between childhood violence and gang membership. As the One Safe Place collaborative expands, the team adds facilities to accommodate different types of survivors. In 2014 The One Safe Place Family Justice Center moved into its permanent home at 1100 Hemphill St in Fort Worth. OSP now accommodates human trafficking survivors. It’s a labor of love to care for the people that come to them, but Gutierrez sees his work as a unique opportunity to heal the community. “An important core value at One Safe Place involves

respecting the dignity and worth of all individuals and welcoming anyone who walks into our doors,” explains Gutierrez. “Most importantly, One Safe Place believes that to best meet this core value, our organization’s board, leadership, and staff must reflect the diverse community we serve.” All of the hard work put into One Safe Place is not possible without donations and the collective impact of contributing partners like the Frank Kent Cadillac dealership and family; one of their most supportive benefactors in their work. “Frank Kent Cadillac plays a role in ensuring that every human has the right to be free from the fear of violence,” says Gutierrez. Gutierrez believes that the organization and its partner’s legacy is hope, creating greater resilience within a community of broken hearts. “We believe our survivors futures will be better than their past and we have a role in making it so. That includes you, me, and all our community partners,” affirms Gutierrez. “Together we are creating better outcomes for our community.”

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” CONTINUED > NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . FRESH ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & HARDWOOD SMOKED BACON Yield: 6 servings 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved 1-2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish - 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
The Recipes
• • • • •
CRANBERRY ORANGE ZEST SAUCE Yields 4 cups
METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES: • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
• • • • • • • • • •
3 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen 1 cup cranberry juice, sweetened 1 piece orange peel 1 each orange for zesting ½ cup orange juice, freshly juiced 3 each cinnamon stick ¼ teaspoon clove, ground ¼ teaspoon allspice, ground ½ cup sugar Pinch salt
METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. In medium saucepot on high heat, add everything except orange peel and orange zest. Bring ingredients to boil, then reduce to a simmer with lid. 2. While simmering, stir occasionally with rubber spatula ensuring bottom does not burn. Simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens. 3. Remove lid and add orange peel and season to taste. Can add more sugar or spice if needed. 4. Once sauce is thickened and most liquid has evaporated, remove orange peel and cinnamon sticks and remove pot from heat. 5. With hand-held blender, puree sauce, keeping some texture. 6. Freshly grate in orange zest, stir and season to taste. 7. Transfer sauce to jar and place in refrigerator to cool overnight. 8. Enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
Bon appetit! Chef Kyle Williams, Savor & Swirl
• Enjoy with all types of poultry and game birds. • Do not use ground cinnamon. • Can puree with blender if you do not have hand-held blender. • Consistency should be thick sauce and not a jelly. CONTINUED > NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/WE STF O RT WO RT H

Wine Pairing
According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”
