We had the pleasure of sitting down with the owner of the Don Artemio restaurant and learned what makes them unique to Fort Worth. There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. Stanley Park by Timothy Taylor Stanley Park by Timothy Taylor- Canadian author, Timothy Taylor premiered his first novel, Stanley Park, in 2001 to collective praise. The novel follows a Vancouver based chef, Jeremy Papier and his failing bistro. As Papier tries to hold his dreams together, his homeless father drags him into a real-life, 1940’s “cold case” investigation. The novel mindfully uses the investigation as well as Papier’s commitment to locally grown foods to pay tribute to Vancouver’s landscape and history. True crime fans and foodies alike will enjoy this beautifully written novel.
A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway- Published after his untimely death, A Moveable Feast is Hemingway’s memoir. A love letter to 1920’s Paris and the literary movement, Hemingway charters the reader through his early years there, one cafe at a time. Along the way, familiar characters like Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald float in and out. This no-frills prose will stick to your ribs and leave you satisfied.

Why Organization Is More Than Just Putting Things Away & How to Get Started WE ASKED A LOCAL PRO TO GIVE US HER TOP TIPS FOR BEGINNERS. 20

What comes to mind when you think of home? Is it a serene, organized space? Or maybe you’ve got that one area (the pantry, the closet, the garage) that you can’t seem to keep clean. While it’s impossible not to have a home filled with everyday life, there’s a scientific benefit to clearing the clutter—it’s good for your health. We spoke with Timmi Blackshear, owner of The Curated Fort, an organization and design firm, to find out more about the relationship between a clean home and a calm mind. “There are a ton of studies that show clutter and chaotic spaces can affect our mental health,” she says. “Our brains create stress hormones, and those unorganized spaces like the junk drawer, the pantry, or overloaded closet might subconsciously be stressing us out.” Blackshear spent over a decade as a high school teacher and coach and now applies her learned skills to The Curated Fort. “It’s about creating a healthy rhythm and routine, about how we recharge. If we can create new patterns and keep space clean, we can carry those habits into other areas of our lives, and that can translate into less stress and a more peaceful environment.” The good news is that there are steps you can take right now to start your journey to a cleaner, more calm home. The first thing? Purge, purge, purge. This is probably one of the hardest things to do, which is why Timmi suggests bringing a friend in to help. “It’s the bravest first step,” she says. “Get rid of the stuff you haven’t used for six months up to a year. Have your friend hold

up the things you want to ditch because the chances of you tossing something you hold in your own hands go way down.” Blackshear also offers this bit of insight on letting go, “find a non-profit organization you love, one that will excite you about giving things away. You’ll be able to imagine the good someone else will get out of using these items.” The second step is all about categorization. Deciding what should go where makes it easier to keep the system going. If this isn’t something that comes naturally to you, it might be a good idea to bring in a professional at this point. “If you find the right person, they can truly set up a system that helps you maintain that organization. They’ll help you learn how it works so you can set it up on your own in other areas of your home.” Lastly, Blackshear suggests thinking about sustainable organization. “Anyone can go to the Container Store and buy a system. I suggest using things you already have or that have meaning to you. It’s a huge aspect of mental health. For example, I put all my K-Cups in an old canister of my grandmother’s. Not only does it help to keep my space clean, but I’m reminded of her every time I use it. Keel included this crisp, clean wine in his Italian wine club this month. It pairs nicely with any kind of pasta or classic Italian dish. “The grape is similar to Vermentino, which is actually grown in Texas now; it’s another one of my favorite grapes,” says Keel. “I went down a rabbit hole of Vermentino, and that’s where I found this Pigato.”

Prominent Fort Worth winemaker, Weston Eidson is behind this bottle. With only a hundred cases made, it’s very rare. “Weston’s cab, Silver Ghost, is one of our best-selling,” says Keel, a testament to Eidson’s skill. A light to medium-bodied wine, it pairs best with mushroom risotto or grilled pork or chicken.
“Philipe is the most passionate guy about wine,” chuckles Keel, “he just loves making wine, and the Rhone valley is one of my top five places to drink it.” And Keel’s is the only shop in Texas carrying this wine, as it’s difficult to obtain, “I had to jump through a lot of hoops!” Traditionally, lamb meat works well with any type of Rhone wine; pair this one with lamb, rotisserie chicken or other lighter meats.
“This winery is north of Florence, and it was one of the best tastings I’ve had in a long time. (Bibi Graetz) bought an old hotel, turning it into his personal home and also his winery,” says Keel. The bottle also sports an artistic twentieth anniversary label, as Graetz also loves to paint. A wine this full-bodied pairs best with a big, simply cooked steak. Pass the butter, extra rich.

Don Artemio restaurant was founded by chef Juan Ramon Decardenas in Saltillo Mexico, fifteen years ago as a second-generation restauranteur. Decardenas wanted to create a restaurant with a focus on traditional Mexican cooking methods but with the elevated presentation of fine dining. To execute his vision, Decardenas turned to prolific Saltillo historian, Armando Fuentes Aguirre. To Aguirre, Decardenas asked, "what should I call my restaurant?" For Aguirre, there was only one man who truly captured the dining concept Decardenas wanted, Don Artemio: a distinguished author, attorney, and cultural icon from Saltillo, born Artemio de Valle Arizpe in 1884. Don Artemio began writing books while he was abroad in Madrid, Spain, returning to Mexico City in 1925; his travels and resulting knowledge earning him the title of 'city historian' soon after his arrival. At this time, Mexico City was a cultural epicenter that rivaled New York City. A bustling community, rich in culture and the arts, Don Artemio soon found himself rubbing shoulders with the likes of artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. As Don Artemio enjoyed the highs of Mexico City society, he began gaining a reputation as a

true 'gourmand.' Becoming renowned for his good taste and dinner toasts. "Don Artemio wrote 54 books and we have 23 of them in our collection, at the restaurant (in Fort Worth)," boasts Adrian Burciaga, co-owner of Don Artemio Restaurant. "Most of them are first or second editions, and three of them are signed by him in 1941, so it's a very special collection for us." Burciaga and Decardenas linked up after meeting at The Modern Art Museum, where Decardenas was Burciaga's guest chef at the cafe. Burciaga also says that Decardenas was his mentor and the two of them hatched a dream to one day join forces at a restaurant of their own. "I recognize his pride, his awards and his passion for Mexican cuisine," affirms Burciaga. "To me, he is one of the best." After the pandemic hit, Burciaga became a free agent and the perfect time for the visionaries to link up seemed to have come.
"We decided to pursue our dream," says Burciaga. They began looking for a location for the second Don Artemio restaurant, knowing the heart of the cultural district would honor the spirit of their cultural icon, Don Artemio. "What we are trying to do is share our traditions through food," explains Burciaga, detailing the scratch made dishes and the painstaking steps they take to maintain their authenticity, importing special strains of corn and other Mexican ingredients. But they also use historical artifacts and architecture to tell their story, wood and fixtures in the restaurant coming from Saltillo, supporting the local businesses there. The restaurant, which opened in March 2022, is now a jewel of the cultural district, a location that values the labors of their work. So, take a bite out of Mexico City at this feast for the eyes and soul, and welcome to Fort Worth, Don Artemio!
