September 2025 PUBLISHER
Marcus Dickman | marcus.dickman@citylifestyle.com
Dear Reader, I hope this letter finds you inspired and ready to embrace the beauty of self-expression. Style is such an extraordinary part of life. It’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read, and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s the unique thread that creates the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks, and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding. Here in West Cobb, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our city’s vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite your creativity and lift your spirit. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that. So go ahead, celebrate your unique style. Whether you’re exploring new trends, blending classic elements, or creating something entirely original, let this issue inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression. Here’s to being unapologetically and uniquely you! Cheers! MARCUS DICKMAN, PUBLISHER @WESTCOBBCITYLIFESTYLE

Family is deeply important to Heather and Wesley Brawner. When they started Brawner Renovations, they intended to create custom outdoor spaces for families to enjoy and make memories.
Top: Heather & Wesley Brawner
As such, the couple started their business out of their own family home 14 years ago, carrying on a family tradition of construction. “Wesley grew up around construction, and it runs deep in his roots from his grandfather to his dad,” Heather says. Wesley went on to get his Residential and Light Commercial General Contractor License. Heather and Wesley are happy to work for the community in which they decided to raise their own family. “While looking for a place for our growing family, we felt like Kennesaw was the right place for us,” Heather says. “It still has a small-town feel, but close to Atlanta.” The experience clients receive with Brawner Renovations is just as important as their new outdoor sanctuary. Not only do clients receive a personalized experience, but they also get a one-stop shop for decks, porches, outdoor kitchens and more. “We give our customers a family-type experience from the initial consultation to the final build,” Heather Brawner says. “Our team takes pride in giving our customers a professional, memorable experience. We are transparent with our clients about cost and timeline, we maintain clear and honest communication, and above all, we have shown respect and courtesy to our clients. We offer a turnkey experience to our clients, so they don't need to look for and hire several contractors.” Brawner Renovations specializes in transforming outdoor decks and porches into beautiful, custom oases. As TrexPro® Platinum and Timbertech Platinum contractors, their expert craftspeople deliver exceptional composite decking and porches using premium materials for long-lasting results. Whether you’re looking for a new deck, porch or something more unique, Brawner Renovations will work closely with you to bring your vision to life. With unmatched craftsmanship, attention to detail, and quality materials, they create outdoor spaces that are both functional and a reflection of your unique style. Ashli & David Dyas
Ashli Dyas, owner of Moxie Salon & Beauty Bar in Kennesaw, was first introduced to the Moxie brand in 2017 while living in New Jersey. “A girlfriend asked if I wanted to go get my hair and makeup done for an event we were going to, and she took me to Moxie,” Dyas says. “I loved the colors and the vibe, and the energy was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. They took such great care of me that I felt like a celebrity, and I walked out of there feeling so beautiful!” When her husband, David, was laid off in 2023, the family was forced to move back home to Georgia. Leaving her favorite salon behind presented a new opportunity. “I didn’t know what I was going to do without Moxie,” Dyas says. “I knew they were expanding outside of the tri-state area, so we took a leap of faith and decided it was time for the south to see what it’s like to be “Moxified”!”
Dyas never intended to own a salon, having no prior experience in the beauty industry. However, her love and passion for the brand and opportunity, and David’s support, gave her the confidence she needed to get started. The two are now the area representatives, meaning they will be opening Moxie salons all over the state of Georgia. “Moxie is not your typical salon. We are a full-service, affordable luxury salon, your one-stop shop,” Dyas says. “We do all things hair: men, women and children, all ethnicities. We offer makeup application, lashes, waxing services, brow tinting and spray tans. We also offer affordable blowout membership packages. Every client leaves Moxie feeling like the best version of themselves.” To learn more about Moxie Salon & Beauty Bar’s services and to book an appointment, visit moxiesalonandbeautybar.com/kennesaw

WHERE GROOMING AND
culture integrate Meet Alphonza Hicks, owner of True Culture Barber Lounge
ARTICLE BY ANA MARKOSI

T R E N D SE T T E R | STYL E + BE AU T Y
Looking to regain freedom and time with his family, Alphonza Hicks, owner of True Culture Barber Lounge, opened his first location. Growing up in a small rural town, Hicks didn’t always plan to become a barber or even a business owner. “I was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, in a small country town with not a lot of opportunity,” Hicks says. “I moved to Atlanta with my dad in the 10th grade after getting in too much trouble in school. I didn’t have plans on being a barber, but I would always cut my own hair, so after high school, I went to cosmetology school and got licensed.” Initially, business was difficult. Hicks opened his first location in Woodstock at the start of 2020 and had no idea what he was in for. “The process was a challenge opening up my first location two months before the pandemic,” Hicks says. “Then, immediately being shut down for three months was intimidating, being a new business owner.” However, True Culture withstood the test of time, and Hicks opened his second location in Acworth this past March. True Culture’s tagline, “Where grooming and culture integrate,” is a testament to the inclusive environment Hicks has created. He describes it as “the most diverse barber lounge in the metro Atlanta area.” True Culture is an open family environment for all races to feel comfortable,” Hicks says. “At True Culture, we have several different ethnicities when it comes to barbers that work for us, so we want to ensure that our doors are open and accepting to all in the community." Hicks plans to expand True Culture into a major franchise. Through franchising, he hopes to give barbers the opportunity to grow into management positions or become owners of new locations. He also wants his business to become a staple in the community, a place where children can go to get positive advice and find role models. FROM RAILROAD SHANTIES TO MODERN DEVELOPMENT, KENNESAW’S EVOLVING ARCHITECTURE MIRRORS ITS TRANSFORMATION FROM A RUGGED FRONTIER TOWN TO A THRIVING SUBURBAN COMMUNITY NEAR ATLANTA.
Since the community’s founding in the 1830s, Kennesaw, originally known as Big Shanty, has changed from a rough town in Georgia’s frontier to a modern suburb of Atlanta. As the city has grown and developed, so too has the city’s architecture. The earliest structures built in Big Shanty were likely related to the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which was under construction in this area in the 1830s and 1840s. In fact, it was the workers’ houses that lent their name to the community. One shanty, at the corner of Main Street and Moon Station, survived into the 21st century. The earliest surviving illustration of Big Shanty, dating back to the Civil War, depicts a large depot alongside a few wooden structures. There is one drawing at the Library of Congress by illustrator Alfred Waud labeled “Big Shanty.” This illustration may show the Big Shanty Eating House, often referred to as the Lacy Hotel. The building was constructed with scrap wood from the railroad in 1859 and served as an important railroad stop. It was two stories tall with a large front porch to greet guests and several outbuildings. It was easily the largest building in the community. The Union Army burned the Lacy Hotel and the rest of Big Shanty in 1864. Following the Civil War, the community was rebuilt. The initial structures were likely somewhat crude. The depot built just after the war was a small, wooden building with a chimney that appears to be significantly smaller than its predecessor. The new Big Shanty Eating House was also two stories, but with a much larger front porch. Big Shanty was officially incorporated as Kennesaw in 1887, when brick became prevalent downtown. In the 1880s, J.W. Hill constructed a one-story brick store building on Main Street. Though it is currently vacant, it was the longtime home of Eaton Chiropractic. A three-story brick building was built at the corner CONTINUED >

of Main and Lewis in 1903, and gradually older wooden stores began to be replaced by brick structures. By the 1910s, the whole area from J.W. Hill’s building to Lewis Street was a continuous row of brick storefronts. However, the buildings in the middle section, today’s J. O. Stephenson Avenue, were demolished in the 1950s. House design also transformed as Kennesaw grew. The earliest homes were typically railroad shanties or small farmhouses, but by the 1880s, they had become larger and more elaborate. Some were just two rooms with a central hallway, while others had four rooms. Eventually, it became fashionable for gables to be featured on the fronts of houses, and local builders shifted away from simple rectangular floor plans. While today the lines between houses and businesses are a bit more well-defined, at the turn of the century, there was some variation. For instance, the two-story Pritchard House on Lewis Street was a boarding house and blacksmith shop, and Dr. John W. Ellis’ house on Main Street was both a home and a doctor’s office. A significant departure from the Victorian styles of the 19th and early 20th centuries came with the Bungalow, characterized by its much lower roofs and Craftsman style. Cottontail Quilts on Lewis Street remains a notable example, as is Anita’s Hair Cottage on Summers Street. Though much of Kennesaw’s development shifted closer to Cobb Parkway in the 1950s, downtown remained a place of architectural change. The ranch-style homes on Big Shanty Drive are very different from the wooden homes closer to Main Street. The commercial buildings downtown became recessed away from the road. Dr. Hester’s dental office, a former post office, and the old library next door were built in the 1960s and are markedly different from their Main Street predecessors. While many historic homes, particularly near Summers Street, have been converted into commercial spaces, recent developments have brought more residential space downtown. As Kennesaw grows, there has been a renewed focus on honoring the older buildings in the area. This takes many forms: the brick façade of Revival on Main is intended to evoke the historic brick buildings downtown, while the Park on Main development draws inspiration from the nearby wooden houses. From rough-hewn shacks to modern apartments, Kennesaw has constantly been changing. Downtown’s historic architecture reveals how the city has grown and evolved from its humble beginnings into a vibrant community. https://www.kennesaw-ga.gov/

LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME
ARTICLE BY TYLER AMADEUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADRIEN KING AND ALEC WALWORTH
IN
this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-perwear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for
the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives. In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that
are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin • 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum • 1/2oz- Lime juice • Topped with ginger beer • Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame
GARNISH • Small paint brush • Simple syrup • Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame
INSTRUCTIONS Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is Fever Tree ginger beer).
